Thor And The Thundercats - Once In A Blue Moon

11. Once in a Blue Moon - 6:51

"Once In A Blue Moon" is a CD composed of entirely original material by Thor And The Thundercats, a local area band from Vancouver, Canada. Thor Kristinnson's somewhat inconsistant vocals get the job done on some songs, but others would benefit from more polish.
While the vocals could use a little help, the rest of the package is very good. Thor's guitar is strong throughout the CD, punctuating the good songs, pulling up the marginal ones. And while I'm not usually a big sax fan, the playing featured here is lively & enjoyable. The boys cut loose on Shut Up!. The repetitive chorus gets a little old, but excellent trade-offs between guitar and sax are the focus of the song. Other notable songs are Blues Crusader, an up-beat blues shuffle, & Take a Picture, the bands offering in the straight ahead, hard-edged blues department. There is heavy
SRV influence evident in the later, and while this is sometimes taken with disfavor, I think there's nothing wrong with emulating the "great ones", as long as you can pull it off, which Thor does nicely. Bad Investment, a humorous tale of good money gone bad, is another very good tune. The title cut, Once in a Blue Moon, is a nicely done, melancholy blues ballad, although I do feel it's one of the songs that could benefit from stonger vocals. There's some really good, entertaining music here. All in all, though, this is a good effort. Using all original material, Thor Kristensen has put together a respectable CD.

11. Hard To Get - 3:13
12. She's Fine - 4:48
13. The Sportin' Life - 4:50

You like traditional Chicago style blues...this thing smokes! The release is made up of 13 original and cover tracks. This recording really gets that Chicago sound down and doesn't overplay. It sounds fresh and vibrant. Little Johnny Lawton goes a great job on vocals and has great guitar style. Akarsha "Aki" Kumar blows a mean harp and the rhythm section (Frank DeRose on bass and Carlos Velasco on drums) are tight. They have special guests including Johnny "Cat" Soubrand and Chris "Kid" Anderson guitars as well as Sid Morrison piano. This entire recording is very tight and these guys swing.

"I’m Mick Kolassa, a lifelong musician and hardcore blues fan who, in addition to being an active blues artist, also am head of Endless Blues Records and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Blues Foundation".
Mick has been turning out blues records for several years and with each one he's learned a little more about what to do and what not to do. During that time his life has also presented him with many challenges - and opportunities. Drawing on that, Mick has come up with this one, flavored with personal tragedy and triumph, with dashes of humor and pain - that's kind of what Mick does! The album title, Blue To The Bone, is what Blues Blast Magazine said about him. For this album Mick assembled his favorite team of musicians, beginning with producer and guitarist Jeff Jensen, teamed with a solid group of Memphis based musicians: James Cunningham, Bill Ruffino, Rick Steff, Tom Lonardo, Carl Casperson, Eric Hughes, Marc Franklin and Kirk Smothers. Joining them was harmonica ace Bob Corritore on a very special song.
The album opens with "This Getting Old is Getting Old," Mick's song about the misery of aging, followed by "Bourbon and You," which deals with missing a lover. Mick's love of blues poured itself into the next song, "All it Takes is Blues.' "For Better or For Worse" is Mick's song that follows up on his most played song (literally millions of streams) "Baby's Got Another Lover," which Mick wrote about his wife's addiction to alcohol, this new song covers the final few months of her life - it isn't intended to make you smile. With "Something to Look Forward To" Mick returns to the subject of aging and continues with that theme in the song "I'd Like To Be Recycled. The humor of this tune is followed by the humor of Mick's versions of an obscure country song "If My Nose Was Running Money" Mick re-imagined his previously released song "Mr. Right" as well as the classic Merle Travis song "16 Tons." The album closes with Mick's "Please Don't Write That Song," which kind of speaks for itself!

Birchwood's sound is an intoxicating mix of deep blues, blistering, psychedelic-tinged rock, booty-shaking funk and sweet Southern soul, played and sung with true blues passion. 10. Just A Man - 5:27
11. Hungry - 4:07

French band from Pontivy. After a three-year hiatus, Mojo Machine reformed in October 2007 with a new lineup. Like the pioneers of the genre (Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Little Walter) and some of their successors (Red Devils, Mark Hummel, Johnny Winter), the band asserts a rural and electric style true to their Breton roots: authentic and stripped down. Ten years in existence, more than 500 concerts in France, Switzerland, and Belgium, Mojo is a well-oiled machine… With the engine running, still on the road, they released their fourth album in February 2017. On stage, they are sincere and electrifying. It shuffles, it gets raw, it sweats, it breathes the blues; the raw sound of the juke joint. It's contagious, like mojo. It makes you want to sway, to dance, to let yourself go to the sound of a good boogie. Rest assured, these six have the talent and the voice. This blues will grab you once and never let go...

"This album is rootsy rock & roll, and will keep the blues flowing through your veins and pumping out your soul. Wallow in the blues, unload the blues, light it up, rock it out, the Dave Hoffheimer Band takes you where you want to be. Smart lyrics, meaningful guitar riffs, all on a driving backbone beat with raspy vocals. The rolling stones meet the soul of Albert Collins. Crash & Tumble can be played over and over, again and again. This album is for you. Enjoy! CD album contains 11-SUPER cuts. Here is some of the BEST Rock music I've heard this year. It won't drive you away. Wonderful music, super lyrics you can follow and hear! Not covered up by noise like most you find today. Excellent is a guide to such cuts as 'It's coming Thirst', 'Has to be Full', 'Forever Mine'. At EHK we are happy to be promoting the album to Radio for more airplay. Already we are popping up on the charts with this CD. Dave has a super sound as a vocalist and does wonders with lead guitar! Testimony from a fan... Man, what a GREAT, GREAT CD! The best release of 2005 without a doubt! This week I received two other CD's along with yours, but yours, what can I say!?! Please stay in the bluesrock vein. These young cats get there foot in the door with the blues, and then stray from what got them there. I'm from the Woodstock era. Bluesrock is by far the best music. How your CD was not picked up by a major label is beyond me, but before I forget, your vocals remind me of a band from the late 70's called Bandit. The singer was Jim Diamond. Your a dead ringer. They put out three LP's, all good. Can't wait for your next CD! Man, if you have any live tapes laying around collecting dust, I would love to take a listen. Thanks, and keep on bluesrocking! Blues Buddha is New York City blues singer Tommy Dudley, a tough sounding vocalist with many American roots music influences who plays out nightly in major venues. On his latest Stoopid Daddy Records CD I Like It A Lot, the singer turns up the heat with some driving blues-rockers and he also mellow out here and there with soulful ballads. Each song he does plays out with a smooth style he has honed over the years. I Like It A Lot also gives his band numerous chances to show what they too are made of and they help Dudley bring this music to startling life.

Australian Guitarist Jimi ‘the human’ Hocking has been recording & performing music since 1980. He is a member of The Screaming Jets since 1993, & his own band Jimi the Human & Spectre 7.
He also performs as a blues artist. 2005 winner of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA.
Jimi plays electric & acoustic guitar & Mandolin.

"....Blue Guitar is a DIY album I made at the end of the 1990’s after my (temporary) departure from The Screaming Jets. I was at the end of a divorce and flat broke. I had some modest recording gear and apart from the drums and some harp, I recorded everything in my flat in Elwood Victoria using a borrowed Rhode microphone, playing guitar into a little Goldentone amp situated in the cupboard. It was challenging do do it like this and the album has many flaws. I pretty much didn’t know a single person who thought making a Blues album was a good idea at the time. The Blues scene was not as established as it is now, and I recall a gentleman who did some bookings for me refer to the idea as ‘professional suicide’. I still cringe at the sound of my voice when I hear myself sing blues, I wish BB Kings voice would emanate from my vocal chords. Instead a skinny white boy from the suburbs comes out. But I enjoyed this labour of love, and beyond the fact that I had no budget and no high quality production, this is a very real album of rootsy ideas at a time when I couldn't even 'drop in' to fix recording blunders. However, it opened new doors for me. Both the Blue Guitar and the Blue Mandolin albums were projects I just ‘wanted to do’, and in many ways I like the fact that my personal history is littered with projects of that nature. My night mare would be to look back on my musical history and see a bunch of fashion driven pop releases that dated a month after they were released (no offence intended to pop artists). My sister often joked… “What about a Blue Bouzouki album, or a Blue Sitar album?” … my response … “hold my beer” ;-)...."

Drink Small - Round Two

Bitrate:320K/s

Tracks Listing:
 1. D.U.I. - 3:51
 2. Steal Away - 4:09
 3. Thank You, Pretty Baby - 3:34
 4. Don't Let Nobody Else - 3:57
 5. Widow Woman - 5:17
 6. I'm Tired Now - 6:21
 7. Honky Tonk - 3:15
 8. They Can't Make Me Hate You - 4:42
 9. Bishopville Women - 2:51
10. Can I Come Over Tonight - 3:57

The breadth of Drink Small's repertoire is fascinating in itself, but what's even more impressive is his depth as a performer in any of his chosen genres. His records may suddenly shift from a solo acoustic blues-guitar track to a smooth soul ballad with horns to who-knows-what, yet Small never seems to be caught out of place. He can be gruff and rough, clean and modern, or light and bouncy, altering his voice and guitar to suit the mood. Rated one of America's top gospel guitarists before he turned to blues in the late '50s, the South Carolina "Blues Doctor" for years had only one 45 on the market (Sharp, 1959). His discography has recently begun to grow considerably, finally revealing the extent of his songwriting and performing talents. ~ Jim O'Neal

 9. Whiskey Drinkin' Woman - 6:10
10. I Asked For Water - 5:23

Work That Jelly! represents the welcome return to recording of Matthew Robinson, the Texas singer and guitarist who has been performing for over 50 years, including as the lead singer of The Mustangs, with whom he toured extensively opening for the likes of Jimmy Reed, James Brown, Big Mama Thornton and Johnny Winter. In 2012, Robinson received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Austin Blues Society, a good indication of the respect in which he is held in the Lone Star State. The opening song on the album, Taj Mahal’s “Strut”, sets the tone for what follows. The band lays down a smooth funky shuffle as Robinson sings the immortal opening line of: “You should have never said you loved me when laid across my folding bed, baby you was drinking that white lightning and you was talking all out of your head.” “Strut” features a harmonica solo from Steve Power, an organ solo from Ron D’Argenio and typically low-down-but-tasty lead guitar from special guest, W.C. Clark. The rhythm section of Pete “The Beat” Langhans on drums and Jeff Hayes on bass keeps the track in the groove throughout. “Strut” is followed by the swinging shuffle of Bruce McCabe’s “Rack ‘Em Up”, in which the rhythm section again excels and the other musicians are offered ample space to stretch out in their solos. All 10 songs on the album are cover versions, most of which are well known and they are nearly all played pretty close to the originals (such as Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Didn’t Know”, Tab Benoit and Tabby Thomas’ “It Takes A Long Time, Baby” or ZZ Hill’s “I’m Gonna Stop You From Giving Me The Blues”) although the reworking of Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” replaces the backing horns of the original with Steve Power’s harmonica and D’Argenio’s organ. Little Milton’s stellar lead guitar playing is matched by W.C. Clark’s subtle and tasteful playing on the remake). Indeed, the three songs on which Clark appears all benefit from the stardust of his superb guitar. His solo on “It Takes A Long Time, Baby” is particularly impressive.
Robinson has a distinctive and expressive singing voice, even if at times he seems to be trying to channel the vocal mannerisms of the original singer (such as on Jimmy Reed’s “Going To New York” or Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Asked For Water”). When he is utterly himself, such as on “It Takes A Long Time, Baby” or “I’m Gonna Stop You From Giving Me The Blues” it is easy for the listener to get lost in his wonderfully emotional voice. If there is a criticism of the album, it is that the production by Steve Power does not capture the full brio of a live Matthew Robinson performance, perhaps because D’Argenio’s piano and organ is quite high in the mix, which adds a certain smoothness when Robinson’s voice might benefit from a little more grit in the backing arrangements.Be that as it may, Work That Jelly! has more than a few magical moments and is worth investigating, especially if your tastes lean towards the smoother end of the modern blues spectrum.

Roadmaster: The Blues Guitar of Johnny Charles Review by Jason Ankeny. Guitarist Johnny Charles is joined by vocalist Pete McMahon on Roadmaster, a fine contemporary blues outing including the tracks "Upside Down," "Live Wire," "Streamliner" and "Blue Heat." (
Roadmaster, the second release by New Jersey native Johnny Charles, is a smorgasbord of blues. There are 12 original tunes. Charles is like a gourmet chef at an all-night blues diner - serving up every imaginable blues treat. And like any master chef, Charles has used only the finest ingredients. He has imported the Rhythm Section of the late guitar great Danny Gatton and seasoned it with the spicy harmonica of Garden State sensation Rob Paparozzi.

Authentic sounds rooted in the heart of the country. From the first pour to the last note, Black River Whiskey delivers a haunting blend of outlaw blues and modern soul. Grief. Loss. Longing. Names you still say out loud. Love you never put down. No moving on. Only carrying.
A man learns grief doesn’t happen once. It happens every morning. The world keeps moving. The house doesn’t. He keeps living beside a life that stopped.
Black River Whiskey needed a voice that had earned every scar, every silence, every regret a voice that carried the weight of fifty years of bad choices.  Ray Harlan is that voice. The ghost at the bar. The shadow on the porch. He doesn't perform he confesses. Every song is a page from a journal that was never meant to be found.

This is a must have for Muddy Waters fans. Wonderful renditions by his followers.
On April 21, 1988, two significant events occured in the Cradle of the Blues, Clarksdale, Missisippi. One was ZZ Top's dedication of a guitar made from a board from Muddy Waters' home to the Delta Blues Museum. Of equal significance were the incredible performances turned in by the "original" Muddy Waters Blues Band at John Mohead's Cotton Exchange Club. No overblown concert to mark the event, rather two authentic juke-joint shows by a special group of players, the likes of which invented the genre.
This two-CD set was distilled from those historic performances. Be warned! You'll hear crowd noise, clinking glasses, missed notes and feedback. You'll hear tade-ins and fade-outs, mainly because the original recording devices were not always operating at the right time. But mostly what you'll hear is the real, visceral expression of blues masters in its most powerful, unadulterated form.

S.E.Willis (Steve Willis), originally from West Virginia, has been playing the piano and harmonica since the age of six, and organ and accordion since his teens.  He started playing in rock and roll bands along Arizona’s stretch of Route 66 in 1967.  Willis’ music is deeply rooted in traditional American forms: blues, boogie-woogie, country, rockabilly, gospel, zydeco. A veteran band leader, S.E.Willis has taken a supporting role in bands with such artists as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, Albert King, Jimmy Rogers, Roy Gaines, and, since 2000, Elvin Bishop (his accordion features prominently on the 2014 release “Can’t Even Do Wrong Right”). S.E.Willis sang tenor with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and appeared on their 1995 release “We’ve Come a Mighty Long Way.” He worked another three years with founding Meters’ member and New Orleans drumming legend Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste, and plays piano on his solo release Zigaboo.com. Steve “S.E.” Willis is a member of the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame.
Willis has released seven CDs of original and classic material: Airn Beats Nairn, 1999; Luckiest Man Alive, 2002; Cold Hand In Mine, 2003, Taproot, 2007; Pass the Hat, 2013; Turtle Dove Bounce/Live at the Poor House, 2015; Too Much Love (S.E.Willis and the Willing), 2019. Fifty plus years in the business and counting, S.E.Willis knows a lot about American roots music and shows it with every note. Willis started his musical journey in 1968, playing full-time in Flagstaff and throughout Arizona. In 1978, he moved to San Francisco, where he was an integral part of the blues, funk and rockabilly scene. Steve opened for Jerry Lee Lewis, Gatemouth Brown, Jerry Garcia, Clifton Chenier and others.
S.E. Willis' first CD, "Airn Beats Nairn," establishes him as a solid and original creator of roots-based American music. It is a collection of twelve songs, all written by Willis, with styles varying from New Orleans funk ("Love Monkey") and Rhumbas ("Ma Cher," "High Octane Gas") to straight Blues ("Drinkin' Blues"), Rockabilly ("Past Tense," "Fool For Life"), and Zydeco ("Good Food, Good Fun"). There is also a fine soul ballad ("Baby Why"), a smokin' boogie ("Good To Go Boogie") and the album's title track, the accordion-drenched bayou grinder "Airn Beats Nairn.""Airn Beats Nairn" is a Southern expression meaning any beats none. This record does far more than that, featuring solid backing by both a crack Arizona band (Bob Blazi, drums; Johnny Rapp, guitar; and brother John Willis, bass) and a California line-up (Vince Littleton, drums; Takezo Takeda, guitar; Jerome Hammond, bass).

Over the course of his phenomenal career in music, Mike Finnigan was known primarily as a sideman, the acknowledged master of the Hammond B3 organ as heard on his work with Jimi Hendrix, Stephen Stills, CSNY, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker and many, many other household names  The fact is that apart from his instrumental virtuosity, he was a gifted vocalist, a magnificent blues singer in his own right. Now, more than four years after his passing comes the eponymous ‘Mike Finnigan’ album, his final musical will and testament that features appearances by Stephen Stills, Smokey Robinson, Joe Bonamassa and son, Kelly Finnigan, as well as a who’s who of the key players on the LA recording scene. Lefthand Freddy & the Aces (now: LEFTHAND FREDDY) was founded in the early nineties. A band that developed rapidly and became increasingly popular, not only in the Netherlands but also beyond its borders. They played at major festivals in Germany (Leverkusener Jazztage), France (Nuit de Blues), Hungary (Sziget), and England (Gloucester Blues Festival and the legendary ‘100’ club in London). Guitarist/vocalist Fred Reining (Lefthand Freddy) is a ‘blues institution’ in the Netherlands and far beyond, as evidenced by the many accolades in the (inter)national press. In 2023, Lefthand Freddy was inducted into the Dutch Blues Hall of Fame. The album SOUL STRINGS, released in 2014, was widely praised: “A masterpiece, a must for every guitarist in the Netherlands.” The latest album Urban Blues Adventures (2023) is the long-awaited successor and is likewise being exceptionally well received by the press and the public.

On their third album, "Big Dave" Steele and his four Ultrasonics gravitate to historic black music styles without coming across as copycats. Rather, the Ann Arbor-based band, led by Steele from its inception in 1990, brings freshness to its sound by streamlining elements of house-rockin' swing, jump-jive boogie, gospel, jazz, Memphis soul-R&B, and Chicago and Texas blues. Steele's blues guitar playing, always technically competent and often jazz-inflected, has the capacity to flame up with inspiration, as when he pursues his muse into Bo Diddley territory on roots-rumbler "Black Coffee" or chooses just the right notes for his feature spots on the stylish shuffle "Big Bad Blues Train." And the band is fortunate in having two other capable soloists: Dave Morris on harmonica and Ben Wilson on keyboards. --Frank-John Hadley
