"Anyone who follows us and our reviews in the field of blues or blues rock knows that we are big advocates of bands from Germany! I know the international scene in this sector is huge, almost overwhelming! And yet, local artists or groups like n.v.a. ANDREAS DIEHLMANN from Kassel, RICHIE ARNDT from Bielefeld, and of course HENRIK FREISCHLADER or KAI STRAUS manage to keep the German flag flying with well-attended concerts and high-quality records, and even make a mark.
I would now like to add BLUE DEAL from the Black Forest to this list. The bandleader is the experienced Joe Fischer, who successfully toured Europe and the USA with the CADILLAC BLUES BAND in the 1990s. In 2020, after many concerts and intensive work, the group BLUE DEAL was formed, which has since released two albums ("Holy Ground" in 2022 and "Can't Kill Me" in 2023). Twice" (2023). Both were very well received by both the trade press and the blues-loving public, and "Can't Kill Me Twice" even won a German Blues Award for Best Album of 2024!
The new studio album "Make A Change" should continue its success, although, or perhaps precisely because of this, the pure blues plays a rather subordinate role and only forms the basis. Nope, quite rocking and with lots of organ, songs like the title track (see video) are more reminiscent of classic hard rock à la DEEP PURPLE or URIAH HEEP. Wham, but a wonderful ballad like "Greenland Shark" then brings us back to rock-solid blues ground; the mere interplay of organ and guitars leaves me speechless and open-mouthed! Awesome!! Add to that the fantastic voice of Tom Fischer, who also plays the cigar box (connoisseurs know what I'm talking about), harps, and keyboards. Overall, the organ is omnipresent, most of the songs move along well, and there aren't any overly slow rhythms. Quite the opposite: rock is the order of the day here! "Over Jordan," a piece performed with just an acoustic guitar, brushes, and harmonica, comes across as very intense and atmospheric. Lean back, groove along, and it's not at all typical of the usual, old-school blues. "Rent A Heart" comes across as relaxed, danceable, and extremely pleasant, while the magnificent "Storm Will Come" makes my thoughts wander toward GARY MOORE (R.I.P.). But songs like the opener "Another Reason," with its lively honky-tonk piano, the title track "Bad Boogie Woman," or the southern-flavored "Get It Done," with its awesome organ solo, will delight all blues and Southern rock fans. The purely acoustic ballad "Easy To Hurt" is a fine, quiet "unplugged" exception. The short slide instrumental "Hell Valley" adds some real variety and extra energy".
