Not Since the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Hollywood Fat's Band has there been such an exciting Blues Roots sound with a Chicago and swamp twist; Dangerous on the Edge Traditional 50's music today.
A little blues will cure whatever ails you. Just head out to the bar and catch the band laying it down -- a little harp and some slide guitar will set you straight. Of course, if you can't get out to the bar, you have to listen to the sounds pressed onto disc. Recently, I received a disc by a band called the Superstitions, with music that promised to deliver blues in the style of the great Little Walter.
I have to admit that I am not all that familiar with Little Walter's music. From what I gather from the info on the disc, he often played a blues format that didn't include a bassist or drummer. Accordingly, the Superstitions consist of three musicians: Demar Dupree (vocals, harp), Johnny Williamson (rhythm guitar, vocals) and T.J. Sullivan (lead guitar, vocals). (I am already familiar with Sullivan through his own blues album, The Adventures of Thelonious James.)
This trio released an independent disc called Leave All Blades & Pistols at the Door. This is music that is gonna get down and get dirty. It's rawer than the music from Sullivan's solo disc. Playing without bass or drums seems odd these days but early blues musicians often had to make do. It's a fine 15-song set. They are gunning for blues down-home style, and they do a good job of executing the style. They manage to get a very raw sound while maintaining a fine level of musicianship.
The band jams out most of its tracks, getting things started right off with "Boogie Twist." This is a good way to kick it off. "Early in the Morning" has a more old-fashioned blues feel. These guys seem to grasp the bayou influence in the blues. There's even a modern touch with a song like "TV's the Thing." I don't believe Leadbelly ever wrote any songs about television, but the blues should be a living art form. You can still feel the blues in the 21st century, but you also have to live in the world that exists today.
"Red Headed Woman" is another great song. Sullivan did the arrangement for the instrumental "Bayou Dream." I like the concept of instrumental blues. It's nice to just let the musicians open up and play. I find Dupree's vocals and harp playing to be energetic and pure. He has a great voice for singing the blues, and he does a fine job delivering the goods. "You Ain't Nothin' But Fine" and "What's Going on Wrong" help showcase his vocals.
This is a very enjoyable disc. The trio has good chemistry with each other, and they convey the blues in an authentic manner that still manages to maintain its freshness. This is well worthwhile for fans of the blues to seek out.

Cecily Wilborn's new album Soul Therapy reflects her journey through personal struggles, healing, and resilience. The Arkansas native blends R&B, country, and Southern soul, drawing inspiration from her life and those around her. The new album features a special appearance from Cupid. Cecily Wilborn is hardly exaggerating when, at the beginning of her new record Soul Therapy, she tells her listeners in a spoken-word track that "life started lifeing" in recent years, at times taking her down with it. Wilborn, known for her unique blend of R&B, country and Southern soul, went through a difficult divorce, flunked out of school, lost her job and dealt with personal tragedy, all while raising four children. Barry Richman is a great all around guitarist from jazz to rock to country, and has a wonderful collection of incredible instruments and amps and has played with everyone. His guitar playing is soulful without being clichéd, chops driven without being too technical and imaginative without being commercially pandering. Barry Richman is obviously a child of the 70's, fusing blues, jazz, rock and psychedelic. Here is an abbreviated list of the stellar players with whom Richman has already performed or recorded: Allman Brothers, Roy Buchanan, Eric Johnson, Jimmy Herring, Gov’t Mule, Eric Clapton, Les Paul, Buddy Miles, John Lee Hooker, Frank Marino, Charlie Daniels, Little Feat, Derek Trucks Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Al Kooper, Toy Caldwell, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Lee Ritenour to name a few.
Barry Richman, an Atlanta transplant from the Big Apple, can be seen performing his psychedelic blend of original music all over the Southeast. Traveling from one venue to the next festival or concert, leaving a following of fans and a crowd of locals hypnotized, mesmerized, and in awe with the lull of his melodious free sounding, and rockin' guitar. Barry spent time touring with his own band, which used to be called The Visitors, as well as a little time on the road with Wet Willie and Col. Bruce Hampton. However, he prefers to stay in the Southeast as much as possible, where he’s spent time developing his discography: “Moment of Now”, “Blues from Mars (I & II)”, and “Temporary Eternity”. Barry also released two limited edition CD's: The Live at The Darwin's Blues Festival is from an outdoor festival that he played with a side project blues band called The Well Hungarians. "Del Bromham whether solo or as part of Stray has always favoured an approach of the six string that served the song but on this  effort he really lets the songs do the talking (but worry not, his trademark virtuosity is still present). The groovy “Let’s Get the Show Started” with its tasteful string arrangements and funky chopping guitar proves to be an excellent opening track which Bromham follows with the highly melodic”Genevieve”, a song with a latter day Kinks feel when the Davies brothers used to mix their melodic songs with a harder rocking sound.  Bromham’s eldest daughter Zoe passed away in 2016 and a number of tracks on White Feather reflect on the passing of time and loss, the simply titled “Life”, a track from the early days of Stray that the band played live but never recorded displays a maturity in its lyrics that stretches far beyond the young age that Bromham was when he penned it. “Land of the Free” and “Champagne” see our host revert back into a harder rocking territory with some piercing lead guitar lines and bombastic drums which remind everyone why Stray were such an influence on bands of the new wave of British heavy metal. White Feather is an album of contrasts and we are back in gentler pop-rock territory with the catchy “My House” which features some great arrangements, layers of organ in the background with intertwining guitars that really set it apart. The great bluesy solos of “Wicked Man” are only some of the many highlights of this number (again some great arrangements which in spite of their complexity never detract from the songs melody). The gentle “Paradise” channels the Faces or Rod Stewart on his early solo albums where in their quieter moments the band would craft these exquisite rootsy pop songs where Ian Mclagan’s organ would shine through the guitars and mandolins.”Let It Go” is a great Stonesy rocker with some catchy backing vocals and a great riff and “Monkey” proves to be the perfect pissed off song. Bromham reverts back to a poppier approach on “Never Let You Go” (which wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a Jeff Lynne produced George Harrison album) while “White Feather” and its pounding piano will definitely remind you of a certain quartet Mr Harrison used to be part of. A great album of well crafted songs which hopefully will find its way into many a music aficionados record collection".

Ever since he formed the British classic rock outfit Stray over forty years ago, guitarist / vocalist, and principal member Del Bromham, has had little time to pursue his own solo career. In 2004, approximately twenty five years after the Del Bromham Band, Del decided to record his first solo record, entitled Devil's Highway. While Stray's sound leans more towards straight-ahead, classic/ hard rock, Devil's Highway allowed him the chance to finally indulge in his love of traditional blues. The result was this stripped down, eleven track, acoustic / electric affair , that took him outside of the familiar sound of his 'other' band. Earlier this year Del was offered by Angel Air Records, the chance to re-release the album, so he promptly headed into the studio and recorded five extra tracks especially for this splendid reissue.
From the opening acoustic, swamp slide of the title track, it won't take the listener long to realize that Del is indeed the real deal. Comprised mostly of his own compositions, he also pays tribute to a few of his idols along the way as well, by turning in two versions of the Robert Johnson staple "Ramblin' On My Mind". For the first version he chose to play the slide on a resonator guitar in order to achieve a sound comparable to the original, whereas the second version is all acoustic. He also turns in another superb acoustic rendition of the blues standard "Careless Love", a rollicking, full band version of "That's Alright Mama", in addition to his take on another tried and true classic, "The Midnight Special". His sublime cover of "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever", a tribute to one of his favorite singers, Levi Stubbs from the Four Tops, is also worthy of mention. As for his own self -penned tracks, the highlights here include "Slave", "Whiskey, Wine And Beer", "Ain't Love A Wonderful Thing" and the stirring, delta boogie of "40 Acres And A Mule".
Well into his sixth decade in music, Del Bromham is still going strong and thankfully shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. If you want a real taste of what an authentic blues record should sound like in the 00's, then look no further than Devil's Highway. This was a superb release back in 2004, but now with the added bonus tracks, you can consider this reissue to be the definitive version.

The difficulty most artists have creating a buzz on debut albums, especially in the blues genre, is partially alleviated on guitarist/singer/songwriter Troy Mercy’s initial foray. That’s due to his extensive history working with some of the most recognizable names in the business. Fans of the Fabulous Thunderbirds might recognize Mercy as that band’s guitarist for a number of years in the early 00s (replacing Kid Ramos), although under the last name Gonyea (there were some self-released earlier albums under this moniker too). He has also toured and/or recorded with roots music legends like Booker T. Jones, Jerry Portnoy, and Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist/right-hand man Hubert Sumlin. But now, taking the Mercy name brings a harder edge to his bluesy rocking. Live, the lineup is stripped down to the power-duo drums and guitar only concept popularized by the White Stripes/Black Keys. That’s an indication of the tough, unvarnished, somewhat retro sound he delivers here. Although veteran bassist Marty Ballou appears on five selections to bolster the vibe, his contributions are minimal yet helpful for a studio recording.On his webpage, Mercy calls his music “brave new blues” describing himself as “I breathe the blues. I have a rock and roll heart.” His influences include Otis Redding, Richard Thompson, Captain Beefheart and Black Sabbath, showing his intent on pushing all sorts of sonic boundaries. That’s clear on these 10 originals. While the minimal instrumentation stays raw and focused, Mercy writes sharp songs with changes and hooks that slither around bluesy and indie rock, but stay tethered to his rootsy inclinations. Mercy also boasts a strong, soulful voice, bringing further fearlessness to music that connects on first listen.You’ll immediately respond to his Jack White/Jimmy Page-styled six-string work on “Compromised Blues (A Spy Goodbye)” that bumps and grinds with nasty garage-heavy, reverb-soaked intensity. Best known as the touring keyboardist for the Who since the late '70s, John "Rabbit" Bundrick has also issued countless solo releases, in addition to session work for other artists. Born on November 21, 1948, in Houston, TX, Bundrick came from a very musical family (his mother played piano, his father the bass, and his brothers various other instruments), leading to the youngster learning the piano at the age of seven. Four years later, Bundrick joined his father in a local country band, and at the age of 15, was an in-demand session musician at local Houston recording studios. After a college career failed to pan out (Bundrick flunked all his subjects except for music), the young keyboardist relocated to Los Angeles, during which time he picked up the nickname "Rabbit" due to his buck teeth. Bundrick eventually returned back to Houston, where he picked up steady session work once more, during which time he befriended pop-reggae singer Johnny Nash. After living in Sweden for a period of time, Bundrick united with Nash in London, where he wrote several songs for and played on Nash's hit 1972 album I Can See Clearly Now, which spawned a massive hit single with its carefree title track. Through Nash, Bundrick met Bob Marley, and lent his synthesizer/keyboard talents to Marley's 1973 release Catch a Fire. Around the same time, Bundrick was asked to join an offshoot project of the British blues-rock outfit Free called Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu & Rabbit, who spawned a lone self-titled release before splitting up. But it was through these projects that the floodgates for further session work seemed to open for Bundrick, as he played on recordings by Sandy Denny, Andy Fairweather-Low, Jim Capaldi, Eric Burdon, Donovan, John Martyn, Silverhead, and Free (the latter of which briefly reunited after the dissolution of Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu & Rabbit). The early '70s also saw Bundrick issue his first few solo releases, 1973's Broken Arrows and 1974's Dark Saloon, but session work was his main focus, as he developed a friendship with Who guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend while playing on his 1977 collaboration with Ronnie Lane, Rough Mix. Bundrick then accepted an invite to join British hard rockers Crawler, but besides a pair of albums (1977's Crawler and 1978's Snake Rattle & Roll), Bundrick's stint with the group proved unfruitful. It didn't take long for Bundrick to latch onto his next project as the Who were looking to add a keyboardist to their touring lineup for their comeback 1979 world tour. Bundrick got the gig (with his first rehearsals with the group documented on the Who's fine home video/DVD Thirty Years of Maximum R&B Live), and has remained as the group's touring keyboardist ever since, in addition to playing on subsequent solo releases by Who members Townshend (1980's Empty Glass, 1985's White City: A Novel, 1989's Iron Man: A Musical) and Roger Daltrey (1980's McVicar, 1994's Celebration: The Music of the Who). Bundrick has also found time to issue countless further solo releases on his own, including such titles as Abendstimmung: Evening Bliss, Dreamcatcher: Global Journey, Dream Jungle, Echoes of Africa, The Fairy Garden, Moccasin Warrior, Moccasin Warrior II, Run for Cover, Same Old Story, Spirit of the Wolf, Tour Guide, Welcome to America, and With the Dolphins. Blues that stands the test of time and produces an honest sound. That was the ultimate goal of Dutch guitarist John F. Klaver from Boxmeer. Several award-winning albums later, and an award as best blues guitarist in 2015, a trilogy preceded it.
In our loader is ‘Organic & Sustainable Sessions Vol. 3’. Which naturally also refers to the two previous albums, showcasing organic blues and venturing into jazz and funk. This final volume starts with five studio recordings in which Bob Fridzema’s Hammond plays a leading role. Blues songs from the full band without surprises. However, what holds the (well-deserved) attraction is the second part of the album, featuring a number of acoustic solo tracks performed live at The International Blues Challenge 2025 in Memphis. With this ‘Memphis’ set, John F. Klaver managed to reach the final. A fantastic result in itself. So let the fingerpicking blues sink in. You might argue it's Old School, yet precisely for that reason, it fits perfectly into the challenge of the conservative South. John also studied music theory in the States, which introduced him to American roots. It starts with ‘Devil Woman,’ in which John musically returns to the pre-war years. ‘Wrong Over Right’ can be called a more modern version, sung with a strong accentless tone. Very skillful, with a flamenco intro plucked over his strings, before conjuring a steady rhythm in the 4-minute ‘Dust.’ John also shows his sensitivity in the moving ‘Peace Of Mind.’ A completely different rhythm and key, however, in ‘Politician,’ delivered in a declamatory and convincing manner. It reminds one somewhat of the late acoustic Kevin Coyne in his satirical protest songs.
Closing the album is ‘Turn It Past Eleven,’ it rocks, as if you should quickly forget his acoustic work. Bizarre, isn't it? A solid seventies rocker nonetheless, in which John lets loose electrically and proves he is a man of many talents. However, not really fitting on this album, not even as a bonus track. This third volume therefore seems more like a hodgepodge. Which, however, does not detract from the quality, but any coherence was clearly not an issue.

Here, on May 13, two days before the official release date of the album It’s Getting Strange, Emanuel Casablanca releases a self-arranged edition that shows how the whole story has developed over the years. The fact is that Emanuel did not immediately click with the blues. From a young age, he worked and trained hard – not the guitar, not the blues, but the basketball. Basketball was the center of his life from the age of 10 until the beginning of college. And then he said “enough” and turned his story towards music and the guitar. Since Brooklyn, New York, has long been associated with indie, punk and jazz, while the blues was neglected, Emanuel Casablanca, a native of Brooklyn, decided to change that situation and make the blues a primary part of his mission. Since then, the guitar and his turn to the blues have become stronger and more pronounced, and that was really all Emanuel wanted to do. With his dedicated work in the world of the blues, Emanuel Casablanca has forged a completely new path and continues to develop it. Known as the “Bad Boy of Blues,” Emanuel offers a raw, modern blues sound that is equally bold, emotional, and wicked – and this album is his boldest presentation yet.
Since I received the complete materials on February 24th, there was plenty of time to prepare, listen to, and come to a final opinion on this album. All thanks go to Phil Solenberg for all of this. What can I say when you are suddenly offered 31 tracks, which are literally bursting with variety and literally surprising with their impressive content? I must mention the impressive singer Kelli Baker, who is racing towards the true peaks that are there – and are just waiting for someone to manage to climb them. And of course, ahead of all is Emanuel Casablanca – a multifaceted artist, multi-instrumentalist, painter, and actor, as well as a striking singer, who continues to go further with this album.
Emanuel continues to drive his urban blues, which in the past included elements of hip-hop, but this album is exclusively based on blues and blues-rock and is specifically focused on that area. However, this album will definitely leave you speechless, both in terms of the number of songs and the variety. Of course, there is always room for further progress – and that is exactly how it should be, because this story will literally win you over.
As the songs come, I fell more and more into this musical story and simply wondered how to stop listening to the album. The pile of material on my desk only grows, and I am completely immersed in the album and can't move on. It is difficult to separate ourselves from what reminds us of our youth, of the days when we spent time listening to music that delighted us and made us proud to be a part of it.
Recommendation
From the first second to the end of the album It's Getting Strange, which is behind Emanuel Casablanca, you will not stop. You will constantly tap your feet, shake your head – but not so hard that you don't get dizzy. As soon as the album ends, your finger goes to the “repeat” button and so on in a circle. Time passes, and you’re still listening to this album. That tells you something – this is a good, crazy, cutting, powerful and incredibly effective, modern blues read. I’ll correct myself – a rock ’n’ blues read with an emphasis on both rock and blues. Where can you find better combinations? Because get your copy of this album as soon as possible! I believe you’ll be very surprised.

Zac Harmon is a professional musician  who began his career playing with Sam Myers and ZZ Hill. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he established himself as a studio sideman, working on commercials and TV shows while also developing his talents as a songwriter and composer, even writing songs for the reggae group Black Uhuru. But above all else, Zac is a bluesman. His first album, "Live at Babe & Ricky’s Inn" (2003), revealed the true blues artist within him. His Delta roots and extraordinary ability to explore a wide stylistic range earned Zac national recognition. With his second album, Long As I Got My Guitar (2005), he won his first Blues Music Award (BMA) for Best New Artist. He received his second BMA in 2022 for Best Soul Blues Album for "Long As I Got My Guitar" (2021). Once unanimously regarded as one of the bluesmen with the brightest future in the genre, Zac Harmon today embodies the raw and vibrant present of the blues, carrying forward the legacy of Southern soul legends who influenced him, such as Bobby Bland and Little Milton. King of the World Sheds Polished Blues with ‘The RAW Project’

On May 29, 2026, King of the World presents their ninth album: "The RAW Project". While the multiple Dutch Blues Award winners were previously known for their flawless productions, the band has now opted for a distinct change of course. The result is an album that trades the drive for perfection for spontaneity and unfiltered emotion—a soundtrack for the raw times of today.
The Essence: Less Production, More Emotion.
During the writing process for "The RAW Project", a fundamental need arose to do things differently. The band abandoned polished studio standards and returned to the roots of "old-school" blues. In a time of social unrest, King of the World translates the zeitgeist into music born of pain and loss, yet equally of resilience and hope.
“We let go of the drive for perfection in favor of pure expression,” says the band. “This project is confrontational and unadorned, yet delivered with absolute conviction.”
An Established Name in a New Light
Since their formation in 2012, King of the World has left an indelible mark on the Benelux blues and rock scene. With performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival and Paradiso, and a cabinet full of Dutch Blues Awards (including Best Band and individual honors for every musician), the group arguably has little left to prove.
Nevertheless, "The RAW Project" compels the listener—and the critic—to get reacquainted. With guitar phenomenon Stef Delbaere (ranked among the absolute elite by *Gitarist Magazine*) and the indestructible lineup of Govert van der Kolm (keyboards), Marlon Pichel (drums/vocals), and Ruud Weber (bass/vocals), the band reveals a side of itself that is more intimate and urgent than ever before.

Reckoners sophomore album, Where the Hell Am I?, 
They’ve been releasing a steady stream of singles over the last couple months, but for my money, some of the best tracks are still in store for blues rock listeners when the record hits. Simply put, this record is damn near perfect. There are a couple moments where a track or two don’t quite measure up to the overall extreme quality of the others, but I didn’t give a single song less than an eight out of 10.
Reckoners are a Boston-based five-piece soul and roots rock outfit with a lot of classic rock in their DNA. This is their first record with an organized label and they’ve been coming up the blues rock circuit touring with bands like the Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Wallflowers, and Bonnie Raitt. The band is made up of: Tim Gearan on vocals and guitar, Johnny Trama on guitar, Thomas Arey on drums, Darby Wolf on keys, and Marc Hickox on bass. Also credited for guest support on Where the Hell Am I? are Sonya Rae Taylor on vocals and guitar, Ryan Taylor on guitar, and Kevin Barry on guitar and lap steel.
Where the Hell Am I? is a musically and thematically interesting record. There are times where the songs delve into contemplative or even existential lyrical material, but for the most part both the musical structure and the lyrical themes are upbeat, hopeful,  romantic, and inspiring. It’s a feel-good record that is genuinely touching and entertaining. Reckoners’ sound on Where the Hell Am I? is best characterized as lighthearted, optimistic guitar-driven hard rock riffs and solos with interesting drum choices and excellent, epic feeling organ work on keys. There’s a bit of soul and southern rock in there as well. The production and mixing are first rate and the band sounds excellent; I was continuously impressed with the musicianship on display in every song.
The record is divided up into 10 total tracks, all of which are fun and high quality. The real standout tracks are “We Saw It All,” “Don’t Look Down,” “Consuelo,” and ‘Not to Worry.” Please note that out of 10 tracks I gave four of them (almost half) a perfect 10/10 score. “We Saw It All” has a nice crunchy church organ sound with a fun bassline under it that builds out a bouncy and fun romantic tune that describes a day in the life with a lover and how love itself can make the world seem more interesting and delightful. 
“Don’t Look Down” is a more country feeling tune (the spirit of ZZ Top is present) that is fast and rambling with upbeat lyrics about falling in love, and features a very nice drum break about halfway through, followed by a big keys and guitar part that feels bluesy and rocking, creating a very profound moment just over 2/3 through the record. 
“Consuelo” is a significantly slower and bluesier number than the previous two I mentioned, with a light piano part that manages to balance a tale of heartbreak with a hopefulness for future love. The final(and best) track on the album is “Not to Worry.” It’s big and funky at times almost feels like Parliament-Funkadelic with a big soul chorus, rocking funky breaks in between, and the best guitar solo on the album.
There are only really two tracks on the record that didn’t feel nearly perfect to me: the first track, “Second Skin” which feels a little bit unoriginal, even if it does achieve its goals, and the fifth track, “Silver Stallion,” which at times can feel torn somewhere between a James Taylor song and a ’90s indie song. There’s nothing wrong with either of these tracks, but they don’t achieve the perfection or near perfection of the other three quarters of the record.
So there it is! Where the Hell Am I? is a nearly perfect record from a newer blues rock band that is making their first foray into publishing with an organized label. If there’s any justice in the world, and with a little bit of luck, the quality of this record, along with their touring work will help Reckoners become staples of our genre. If this is the quality of music we can expect from up-and-coming blues rock bands for the rest of the year and looking forward, then the genre is very well positioned indeed.
