Singer and guitarist Franck L. Goldwasser, born in France in 1960 and living in the USA since the mid-1980s, was formerly known under the stage name Paris Slim, but for some time now he has been performing under his real name. The recordings now being released date from the time before this name change; Goldwasser recorded them in three sessions between 1998 and 1999 with a changing line-up. The members included Rusty Zinn (gtr), Jim Pugh (keyb), Gary Smith (hca), bassist Johnny Ace (not to be confused with the singer who died in 1954), and various drummers. The fact that Goldwasser is at home on the West Coast is reflected in the album's sound, as are audible influences of Chicago and Texas blues. In addition to some original instrumental compositions, the 16 songs also include classics from the pen of Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, Jimmy Reed, and Rosco Gordon. Goldwasser's vocals are consistently good, but his versatile guitar technique is far more convincing. Together with the instrumentation, which is always stripped down to the essentials, it creates a high-quality yet pleasantly raw sound that has the potential to captivate listeners, not only in the numerous up-tempo numbers.
This album, released in 2021, brings together tracks recorded for the Mountain Top label but which have remained unreleased.
