CHRISTOPHER DEAN and his “band” are based out in New Jersey where they enjoy a solid reputation for their old-fashioned take on soul and blues with, it needs to be said, a garnish of rock. The band began recording way back in 2001 and they’ve  just released their  sixth album, ‘Steppin’ Out Tonight’ – a pleasing amalgam of blues, soul and rock. From a soul perspective, the LP’s immediate grabber is a cover of an early Curtis Mayfield song, ‘I’m The One Who Loves You’.  The song’s been recorded countless times – by the Impressions and Jerry Butler, of course, but it’s worth seeking out versions by the Five Stairsteps and even Stevie Wonder! It’s a great, simple, old school soul song and Chris treats it with respect and delivers the familiar Mayfield guitar lines with panache. This new 14 track album delivers plenty more cover versions too – showing Chris’ broad tastes and influences. Indeed the album opens with a cover – a jaunty take on Sam Collins’ ‘My Road is Rough and Rocky’ which is     followed by  a robust rendition of ‘Serves Me Right to Suffer’ based on the way that Jimmy Johnson did the John Lee Hooker  song in 1978. On the Johnson version Carl Snyder played piano and he guests on this new take!
Amongst  the other covers are takes on Robert Cray’s gospel-fuelled ‘Walk Around Time’, T-Bone Walker’s ‘That Old Feeling is Gone’ and a soulful rendition of Melvin Waiter’ ‘Running Stop Light’. There’s more of that  good old Southern soul feeling on a lively take on T.K. Soul’s ‘Party Like Back in the Day’, a proper old-time foot tapper! Of the orignals, ‘You Are The Reason’ and ‘Save Us’ are gentle, blue-eyed soul shuffles. Add those to the cuts we’ve described and you have a varied, unpretentious long player that’s good to go right now via  the Lost World Music label.
