Michael Katon - Boogie, Pt.1 & Pt.2 (2025) The long-awaited (10 years?) new release from Boogieman from Hell is finally here! Nothing can be more clear than the album title and song titles! Rumor has it that someone jokingly asked Mike how many songs he had written with “boogie” in the title. Here is his answer! Ten variations on one theme, and yes... every song is a boogie! Advertising does not deceive! It's all there... raw vocals... dirty distorted guitar... searing slide playing... and a sense of humor. You pretty much know what to expect from a Katon album and this one doesn't disappoint! The big plus is that John Eppinga plays drums... Mike's longtime collaborator. A solid foundation on which Katon can open up and improvise. And he improvises! All ten tracks are basically the basis for Michael's long solos, and I love it! Mike is a highly underrated guitarist with his own unique style... not to mention one of the best slide guitarists out there. Like most musicians of his generation from Detroit (Nugent/McCarthy/Farner/Coda), you can expect it to be straight forward and loud! Nothing cute or pretentious here! My personal favorites at the moment are "Get your boogie on" and "Lazy boy boogie part two" but you can't go wrong with either of these songs! If you're a fan of blues, boogie, hard rock, or dare I say it, even metal, you absolutely must listen to this album. And let's hope we don't have to wait another ten years to hear the sequel! Rating... 4 decibels out of 5! While the music of legendary Detroit musician Michael Cato may well be described as "blues," that doesn't do justice to the power, intensity, and gritty "Motor City" character that Cato conveys in every note and every chord. Since he first began playing in the bars and clubs of Detroit at the age of fifteen, Cato has infused the traditional blues sound with his own Michigan "feel" and is today considered one of the finest blues-rock exponents in the world.
