The Beer Dawgs are a Northern California band based in Sacramento. They've been playing 5 nights a week for almost 19 years & are in the Sacramento Music Hall of Fame (Sammies). "A Little Luck" is their 9th CD, the first featuring the "Horn Dawgs" horn section.
The sixth song on A Little Luck, album number eight from one of Sacramento's hardest working bands, is titled "Tony Joe." Now any combo that pens and records a love letter to Tony Joe White, whose 1968 hit "Polk Salad Annie" is such a touchstone of Southern-fried skank rock, is alright. Chalk that strikeof white lightning up to Bawb Pearce, whose cigs 'n' Jack-tainted vocal cords slouch toward the Dr. John school of dissipation, possesses a musical vision that's retro and quite Southern, reminiscent of another California band with a keen understanding of Highway 99, Little Feat. And Pearce's partner in crime, guitarist Steve Wall, coaxes the kind of noises from his ax that made Little Feat's Lowell George such a threat. This set is a huge leap forward for the Dawgs, in production and in its attractive presentation. The Gator got your granny, indeed.

11. Blues for Lesley - 10:50

Good Australian upbeat soul and roots blues with jazz and folk elements, played in a modern style. It's great to hear how strong blues music is "down under". Give this album a listen, and try and locate Kate's "Soulshaker" album.
"Every great blues mama needs a great piano player and when you combine Kate Meehan’s sweet but gutsy vocals with Skip Landy’s sensual liberation of the piano it is nothing short of a delicious blend of lounge room blues. Kate and Skip will be showcasing new songs from their recently released collaboration with Peter Gelling, "My Sister's Shoes". Vocalist Kate and piano playing partner Skip have been playing their frivolous brand of "good rockin' rhythm and blues, boogies and ballads" around the festival circuit for over five years, leaving a trail of happiness in their wake". © 2007 Tourism Thredbo

MISSISSIPPI QUEEN & THE WET DOGS – PHOENIX
Mississippi Queen & the Wet Dogs present Phoenix, their second album, an LP of eight original tracks with which they continue to explore and develop their musical identity. This Bilbao-based funky rocksoul band, formed in 2015, has all the ingredients to win over audiences: a repertoire that encompasses many branches of Black music, an exceptional lead vocalist, and a powerful stage presence that thrills and captivates. Their live shows blend original songs with covers of classic and contemporary artists in an amalgamation of styles: soul, funk, blues, gospel, country… The group was founded by Inés Eleuteria, who combines powerful and soulful vocals with natural stage presence, and Aitor Zorriketa “The Malamute,” who displays tremendous expressive sensitivity and stylistic versatility on guitar. Completing this musical family are Ander Alonso on drums, Mikel Núñez on keyboards, and Jon Ander Amigo on bass. In January 2019, they released their first album, Try Me, which led to a tour of the best Black music festivals in the Basque Country and the Iberian Peninsula. They were selected by the AIE (Spanish Association of Performers) for the January-June 2020 AIEnruta Artistas program. That same year, they also won first prize in the SubeRock 2020 band competition and were winners of the Sonidos Mans 2020 competition, which allowed them to record the single ‘Welcome Home’ at Mans Studios in Galicia. This single was released in November 2020. Their live performances are a must-see for fans of versatile soul music; they'll make you dance and sing, they'll make you feel good, and they're sure to move you.

Michael Buckley: baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute;
Ronan Dooney: trumpet;
Paul Frost: trombone;
Dan Bodwell: bass;
Dominic Mullan: drums;

Linley Hamilton: trumpet (3);
Eamonn Murray: harmonica (8).

The island of Ireland has a long and impressive history of great blues singers—Van Morrison, Rory Gallagher, Phil Lynott all brought a raw, bluesy, intensity to their performances. Singer and guitarist Nigel Mooney has been on the Irish blues scene since the '80s and his jazz-inflected take on the genre is shown to enjoyable effect on The Bohemian Mooney. Mooney may not have the rough-edged aggression of Lynott but the blues is still very definitely at the heart of his style. Mooney's voice is lighter and more welcoming, inviting the listener to share his experience rather than to be wary of it: a characteristic he shares with James Hunter or Georgie Fame, who guests on "Down For Double" and "How Blue Can You Get." At the core of Mooney's band is his working trio of pianist Johnny Taylor, bassist Dan Bodwell and drummer Dominic Mullan. A selection of guest musicians help to enliven things, adding to the album's bluesy feel. As well as Fame there's the legendary Irish guitarist Louis Stewart, trumpeter Linley Hamilton and saxophonist Richie Buckley. Mooney's not shy of tackling the darker side of the blues. Robert Johnson's "Hellhound On My Trail" epitomizes that dark side and Mooney gives it his most despairing performance. The mood is heightened by the sudden wail of Eamonn Murray's ghostly harmonica solo. It's the exception to the overall mood of good-natured complaints about lost love and commercial failure, though. Mooney's "I Ain't Ready" and "Unlucky In Love" and Fame's "How Blue Can You Get?" all plough this furrow of regret and disappointment with a sly grin and a shrug of the shoulders—and swinging grooves that lend themselves to dancing the blues away. Mooney gives "April In Paris" a swinging, Count Basie, arrangement complete with Michael Buckley's rousing tenor sax solo.
The enigmatic "Dr Legin Yenoom" contributes occasional piano and tambourine. He's also, according to the credits, available for French lessons so he can perhaps take credit for Mooney's vocal on "C'est Si Bon." The Bohemian Mooney, like lots of good blues, has an ability to deal with life's tragedies and pitfalls while still making its audience feel good. Mooney sounds like he's lived the ups and downs, dealt with a few hard knocks, but still keeps on keeping on. After all, as he sings himself, how blue can you get?

Signed to Crajon Productions, owned by the husband and wife team of Bill and Denise Jones (who recorded under the name Denise LaSalle and scored a 1971 gold single, "Trapped by a Thing Called Love"), Coday was the perfect vehicle for LaSalle's blues-oriented R&B songs.Born May 10, 1942, in Coldwater, MS, Coday began his singing career as a teenager, performing in juke joints around Blytheville, AK, with a band that included Son Seals. In 1961, he relocated to Chicago, IL, donning the name Chicago Willie. LaSalle spotted the singer while he was performing at the Black Orchid club. She teamed him with Memphis, TN, soul music producer Willie Mitchell whom she often worked with on her releases for Detroit, MI's Westbound label and for those of other Crajon artists (the Sequins' hits "Hey Romeo" and "The Third Degree"). (Mitchell went on to have hits with another Chicago singer, Syl Johnson, and gold and platinum-laced success with Al Green on Hi Records.)Coday's first Crajon singles, "Sixty Minute Teaser" and "I Get High on Your Love," were regional hits. The third single, "Get Your Lies Straight," proved to be the breakthrough, going to number 14 R&B on Billboard's charts in early 1971. On the flipside was "You're Gonna Want Me." As was the custom on a fast-selling national record, the independently-distributed Crajon leased Coday's single to the much larger Galaxy label, a subsidiary of Berkeley, CA's Fantasy Records, for wider distribution. The follow-up, issued on Galaxy, the Denise LaSalle song "When You Find a Fool, Bump His Head," made it to number 48 R&B in summer 1971. There were other Galaxy singles, but none charted nationally. Coday enjoyed a regional hit on Crajon with "I'm Back to Collect" in the first half of 1973. (Some of his Galaxy/Crajon releases can be found on the compilations All Night Long They Played the Blues (1992), Bad Bad Whiskey (1993) -- both from U.K. label Ace Records -- and an '80s collection of Coday's Crajon singles on Japanese label Vivid Sounds.)In 1973, he signed with Epic Records and the single "I Don't Want to Play This Game" was issued. In 1984, Coday began to tour with Denise LaSalle as her opening act. He began recording again after several years away from the studio. Signing with Memphis-based label Ecko Records, his first release was the appropriately titled Sneakin' Back album. The tracks "Her Love Is Good Enough to Put in Collard Greens," "I Can Move the Hoochie Coochie Man," "Doctor Thrill Good," and a remake of "Get Your Lies Straight" became favorites with blues lovers and blues-formatted radio stations. His second Ecko CD, Can't Get Enough, included "In the Room Next to the Room" and "Not a Word" with labelmate Barbara Carr. Coday's third Ecko CD, 1999's Put Me in the Mood, gave his fans more of his tasty blend of spicy, bluesy Southern soul ~ © Ed Hogan.

"Two Howlin' Wolf classics -- 'Built For Comfort' and 'Howlin' For My Darling' -- work surprisingly well as vehicles for a woman and feature a Chicago-style blues band, complete with harmonica and a guitar player who brings Hubert Sumlin to mind."
A psychological examiner in the St. Louis Public Schools and a recording artist Uvee has released various albums filled with Blues, Jazz and Soul. Hayes has straddled the lines between Blues, Soul, Jazz and later Southern Soul throughout her career. She is one of precious few artists that have been able to make a mark in mainstream Blues as well as the Southern Soul markets. Hayes was born in Mississippi but relocated to Missouri after marrying St. Louis Radio Hall Of Famer Bernie Hayes, who started his independent record label Mission Park in order to issue Uvee's recordings. Uvee's first LP was released in 1984. The 7-track album was entitled "I.C.U.U.V." and introduced the world to a smooth, sometimes sultry singer with a unique, identifiable timbre. In 1986 an obscure imprint Bunky 7 Records released one of the tracks from the LP on a 12 inch single ("He's My Man") followed by another 12 incher entitled "B.Y.O.M (Bring Your Own Man)" coupled with "He's My Man". It would be several more years for new music to appear. Mission Park released Uvee's first CD, "On My Own" in the mid 90s. More notable was the 1998 release "Sweet & Gentle", a 14-track collection of both old and new recordings. It was at this point people started to take notice. This pattern of recycling older tracks with fresh material continued in 2001 on the 15-track "There'll Come A Time". All these early releases were aimed at the Blues and Jazz markets. In 2009 Uvee signed with the fledgling CDS Records label, which issued a 17 collection (yet again) of both new and previously-released tracks. The label chose her duet with Otis Clay, a cover of Johnnie Taylor's "Play Something Pretty" (also the album's name), as the first single but it was the follow up, "Maintenance Man", that put Uvee on the map in Southern Soul. Boosted by WDIA out of Memphis in late 2010 the song has gone on to receive extensive and consistent airplay and sales over the past seven years. ~ © TiVo

Bennie Smith (October 5, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri – September 10, 2006 in St. Louis, Missouri) was an American, St. Louis blues guitarist, considered to be one of the city's patriarchs of electric blues.  His sound was emblematic of a St. Louis blues music that he helped define in over half a century practicing his trade. His contributions to the genre in that city, from the early 1950s and almost until the day of his death, included mentor, performer, and recording artist. Due to his significant contribution to blues music in St. Louis, in October 2003 he received a proclamation from mayor Francis Slay marking October 5, 2003 as 'Bennie Smith Day' in that city. The board of aldermen similarly honored Smith, recognizing him as the "Dean of St. Louis Electric Guitarists". During the 2006 Big Muddy Blues Festival in St. Louis, Mayor Slay honored Bennie once again on September 2 of that year, declaring that day also be known as 'Bennie Smith Day' in St. Louis.
Smith worked as a session musician on many recordings over the years, and has three original albums to his name: The Urban Soul Of Bennie Smith (Blues Highway – 1993), Shook Up (Fedora Records – 2001), and The Bennie Smith All Star Session (2006). In a notable 1958 session, Smith was invited to contribute on what would be Tina Turner's first recording, "Boxtop". The song featured Ike Turner with 'Little Ann' on backing vocals, and Smith on guitar. In addition, he has played with such guitar players as Hubert Sumlin, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, B.B. King and Grant Green.  Smith named Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Matt "Guitar" Murphy as his two greatest influences on the guitar.
As a complication to lung cancer, Smith suffered from a heart attack and died on September 10, 2006. In 2014 the Killer Blues Headstone Project placed a headstone for Bennie Smith at Laurel Hill Cemetery in St. Louis.

Matthew Curry - Shine On (EP)

Size:60,6 MB

 1. Blink of an Eye - 4:29
 2. Caroline - 4:07
 3. Shine On - 4:39
 4. Electric Religion - 5:15
 5. Matter of Time - 3:45
 6. Draw the Line - 4:06

This, his third release features a sort of blues/rock style. Matt is one of the new young guitar slingers on the scene. In addition to playing, he broke into acting by actually playing the part of Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zant in the David Spade movie Joe Dirt 2. This features Tim Brickner on bass, Mark Masefield on keys/B3, and Francis Valentino on drums.
Blink Of An Eye is a slow bluesy ballad. Caroline is a rocker with some nice guitar work, about, yes, a girl. Shine On is another nice ballad. Electric Religion is a funky slow song with some good licks and B3 action. Matter Of Time is a good pop song. Draw The Line is a blues style song with some B3.
Matthew spits out tube-amp-fueled rock like the Black Crowes and Deep Purple having a bar brawl, but he adds a fresh feel to the retro stylings as well. His soulful vocal wail perfectly compliments his wicked guitar work which flat out smokes throughout this EP. This guy can really rock even on the ballads and buzz may not be a strong enough word…he is this close to roaring!
Matt has a good vocal range and the style for this type of sound. His guitar work compliments his material quite well. Matt fits into the mold created by KWS, Jonny Lang, etc., and is competent to carry on the blues/rock tradition ~ By R.M. Engelman (http://matthewcurry.com/)

‘Til The Money$ All Gone is the title track of the fifth album from Auckland’s rhythm & blues outfit, The Flaming Mudcats. Eleven original songs showcase the band's evolving song writing and diverse musicianship. The album reflects their passion to capture the sounds, styles and feels of their American rhythm & blues influences. Drawing from the West Coast, Chicago, Texas and the deep South, the album clearly shows a varied mixture of swing, shuffles and four-on-floor grooves, spiced with a touch of New Orleans strut.
A strength of The Flaming Mudcats’ song writing is the strong story lines in the lyrics. This is backed up with some great performances from vocalist/blues harpist Craig Bracken who leads the band with authority while allowing plenty of room for the band to fly. The solid rhythm section of Ian Thomson( drums) and Pete Parnham (electric and acoustic basses) is complemented by the unique guitar playing of Doug Bygrave and keyboardist Liam Ryan on piano and Hammond B3.
This is authentic, well-considered contemporary antipodean blues and signals a step up from one of New Zealand’s best live bands. Well worth a listen. This album reveals a band at the top of their game.Released February 6, 2024/

VOODOO LAKE hail from Italy, but they have nothing to do with whiny melodic metal. The cover and album title might evoke 60s hippie music – but you'd be wrong. If you wanted to pigeonhole these six Italians into a genre, it would probably be labeled "Southern Rock." But even that term is far too restrictive for "Flowers In The Sand." With this album, VOODOO LAKE simply pay homage to well-crafted, intelligent (but never intellectualizing) rock music with a Southern flavor. They rock, jam, blues, sing passionately, and solo with such gusto that it's a pure delight. Hard chords meet soulful blues guitars (in the streets of New Orleans?), slide guitars invite you to dance with harmonica, banjos, and mandolins, and Hammond organs roar like in the glorious 60s and 70s. Some songs are considerably longer than usual, but even the longest instrumental passages never bore for a single, goddamn second, because VOODOO LAKE handle their instruments with a temperament, passion, and feeling rarely heard before. This is the perfect soundtrack for sitting by the Mississippi with a drink on a warm summer evening, followed by a plunge into the vibrant atmosphere of the French Quarter. "Flowers In The Sand" boasts an almost uncanny density of moods. You can't just listen to it casually—yet this music is never tiring. A wide array of guest musicians, three male singers, and one female vocalist ensure plenty of variety. CONCLUSION: Great Southern blues country jam—and, if you like, even prog rock—because this amount of feeling and instrumental freedom can certainly be considered progressive. There's not a trace of backwoods, stuffy, small-town Southern patriotism to be found on "Flowers In The Sand." ~ Nils Herzog (Info)

He and his band pour out their souls in every performance with high energy and electricity which consistently brings the audience to their feet. In his spare time Jake managed to snare some culinary kudos in New Orleans, taking the trophy for “Best Barbequed Brisket” at the 1999 New Orleans Musicians Barbeque Competition, and launching his own line of signature hot sauce: “Badmouth” (the edible version)…”man it’s hot!”…just like the band! Born in Carlisle, Cumbria, England, vocalist/pianist Mike Harrison began his career in the early '60s as a member of local act the Ramrods. In 1965 he joined the V.I.P.s, who later evolved into Art (1967), and then Spooky Tooth (1968). In each of these acts, Harrison's distinctive voice was well to the fore, notably on Spooky Tooth's "Sunshine Help Me" and "Better by You, Better Than Me." Mike Harrison was recorded following the band's disintegration. Here the singer was supported by Junkyard Angels, a Carlisle-based outfit led by ex-V.I.P.s guitarist Frank Kenyon and completed by Ian Herbert (guitar/vocals), Peter Batley (bass), and Ken Iverson (drums). Harrison's powerful intonation -- part Joe Cocker, part Steve Winwood -- elevated the quality of this set, which was otherwise somewhat lacking in personal chemistry between the leader and sidemen. Smokestack Lightning was an excellent collaboration with various Muscle Shoals session musicians, including Barry Beckett (keyboards) and David Hood (bass), both of whom later joined Traffic. In 1972 Harrison joined a re-formed Spooky Tooth -- which also featured Ian Herbert -- but left again in 1974. The low-key Rainbow Rider arrived before Harrison teamed with former Joe Cocker pianist Chris Stainton. After spending some time in Canada, he worked in a warehouse and left music altogether, unfortunate given his talent as one of the finest bluesy heavy rock voices the U.K. had produced. However, in 1999 he joined a re-formed Spooky Tooth to record a new album and got together with Mike Maslen and Dave Williams to record Late Starter, an album of little-known covers. Harrison died in March 2018 at the age of 72. ~ TiVo Staff

UK singer born April 18, 1947 in Birmingham, England.Well known in 1970's - 1980's Disco era, in 1990's became Blues singer.Polly Brown (also spelled Browne) is a singer whose work on the British pop/rock and disco scenes brought her some international fame in the 1970s. In her native England, she became a very familiar voice, both as a member of Pickettywitch and Sweet Dreams, and as a solo act later in the decade. Brown was born in Birmingham, England in 1947, and was an aspiring singer in her teens. She was a founding member of the bubblegum group Pickettywitch in 1969, which enjoyed several major hits in England and was a popular draw on television as well, and for three years she fronted this group. In 1972, however, after a year of declining sales and receding fortunes, Brown left Pickettywitch and later became part of a group called Sweet Dreams, where she enjoyed a hit with their cover of ABBA's "Honey Honey." She spent a couple of years with Sweet Dreams and released her first and only solo album in the middle of the decade. Her 1973 solo single "So Much in Love" was something of a throwback to an early-'60s girl group sound, but Brown later moved into a disco mode, and enjoyed a short string of U.K. hits, one of which -- "Up in a Puff of Smoke" -- made the U.S. top 20. In the three decades since, Brown has continued to sing and also author songs. In 1995, the RPM label released Bewitched: The Polly Brown Story, which encompassed her work with Pickettywitch and Sweet Dreams, as well as her solo releases. © Bruce Eder /TiVo

Bourbon Jones was originally founded in 1993 by Long Beach residents Chris Hanlin, Mario Barmosca, Mikey Meyer and Anthony Arvisu. After touring extensively throughout the Midwest, deep South, and West Coast, the band settled into a now legendary four year Sunday afternoon residency at the Blue Cafe in Long Beach. Over the years, many musicians came to sit in: Rocco DeLucca, Hook Herrera, Bernie Pearl, Guitar Wooten, legendary Louisiana harpist Lazy Lester, and many former members of such bands as War, the Blasters, Fiona Apple, and the James Harman band.
The whole thing started with me and Barmosca. It was 1992, and I had just moved back down to Long Beach after a disastrous relationship up in LA. I had no band, no girl, no car, and few friends. For awhile I slept on people's couches until I could get an apartment. I was really starting over. All this made me pretty depressed. I wanted to make music, but I didn’t know what direction to take. I really just wanted to play some blues/

Blues singer and songwriter who started her career in Detroit in the late 1940s. Born June 10, 1924, in Tchula, Mississippi. Died April 27, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois.
Fierce, funky, and full of fire, this long-lost 1977 treasure captures a powerhouse Chicago blueswoman at her raw, unfiltered best. Lovingly remastered and issued on CD for the very first time, this ultra-rare gem finally steps out of collector obscurity and into the spotlight it’s always deserved.
"If you wandered into a smoky South Side club in Chicago during the early '70s, there’s a good chance you'd have been met by the raw, unvarnished truth of Arelean Brown’s voice cutting through the haze — fierce, funky, and steeped in blues grit. Born in Tchula, Mississippi in 1924, Brown carried the delta dust on her heels all the way to the Windy City, where she laid claim to a sound that was unmistakably her own. Her roots were rural, but her soul was urban — a blues singer in the grand Chicago tradition, but one who carved a bold new lane with every word she growled and every note she bent.
A commanding vocalist, Arelean had the power to sound both tough and tender, often within a single line. She wasn’t singing about the blues — she was living them, twisting everyday heartaches and hard-won wisdom into songs that shimmered with personality and pain. Her delivery was theatrical yet sincere, humorous yet harrowing. And like all great blueswomen before her — think Big Mama Thornton, Koko Taylor, and Bessie Smith — she didn’t just perform, she testified.
This album, her one full-length LP originally issued in 1977 on the ultra-rare Black Magic label, captures a singular moment in time — ‘The Loop’ was not just a place in downtown Chicago but a state of mind. It speaks of a place where grit met groove. Where soul bled into blues. Backed by the tough rhythm section of The Outhouse Band, and laced with touches of funk and soul, these recordings blur genre lines in a way that only 1970s Chicago could produce. Tracks like “I’m a Streaker Baby” and “Chicken Man” groove with irreverent energy, while “I Love My Man” and “I’m So Blue” dig into the deepest wells of emotional truth. It’s an album of both social sass and soulful sorrow, where punchlines rub shoulders with pathos, and Brown struts across every track like she owns the place — because, in many ways, she did.
This record comes to us here at Red Lightnin’ by way of the legendary Bea & Baby Records — one of Chicago's most fiercely independent labels, and a cornerstone of postwar blues history. Run by the enigmatic Narvel “Cadillac Baby” Eatmon and his wife Bea, the label opened its doors in 1959 and, for three decades, gave voice to the overlooked, the raw, and the ready. Their catalog is a treasure trove of electric blues, gospel, street corner soul, and proto-funk — the real sounds of the city, unfiltered and unpolished. Arelean Brown made several sides for Bea & Baby, including “I Love My Man” and the stomping “Hello Baby” backed by Scotty & The Rib-Tips — records that have long since become cult classics, traded like gold among collectors and DJs. She was a perfect match for Cadillac Baby’s fiercely independent aesthetic: defiant, soulful, and bursting with personality.
Though it slipped under the radar on its initial release, Sings the Blues in the Loop has since become a prized rarity among deep blues collectors, with original vinyls selling for hundreds of dollars if you’re lucky. Lovingly remastered for a whole new generation of blues lovers in 2025, Red Lightnin’ is proud to reissue this true artifact of a bygone era. Available for the first time on CD, this long-lost gem returns from the vaults not as a museum piece, but as a living, breathing document of a woman who sang it like she meant it — and meant it every single time. Arelean Brown didn’t just sing the blues. She was the blues. And now, thanks to this release, she always will be."

Born and raised in Michigan circa 1957 Dave was positioned to be influenced by Motowns greatest as the tides changed to early 70's rock and roll. Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger, Mr. Floods Party , Brownsville Station, Alice Cooper and Grand Funk Railroad. But the greatest influence was by far Jimi Hendrix. Mentored by Duane Allman and early Allman Bros recordings... Dave developed the beginning of his now easily identifiable slide technique and style. Although the influences were many, the list included the likes of Johnny Winter, Alvin Lee, Ted Nugent, Savoy Brown, Chet Atkins, Jimmy Reed and later would include such names as SRV, Eric Johnson, Eric Sardinas, Satch, Vai, Jimmy Thackery, Walter Trout, Dave Hole and Sonny Landreth.
Performing around the Midwest he has shared stages with Sonny Rhodes, Smokin' Joe Kubeck, Joe Bonnamassa, Rene Austin, and many more. Dave continues to WOW his audiences with a blend of technical expertise, combined with a flavorful respect for tradition causing his destiny of becoming a household name to be inevitable. Dave's own blend of Roadhouse Rock and Blues has been developed by his many years of experience on stage and countless miles of geographical diversity and influence. But still, as always, the best test is wth you the listener ~ Dave Smith/
