This CD is a summit meeting between the fiery guitarist/singer Jay Gordon and veteran Phillip Walker. Walker's guitar playing and vocalizing, though a bit more traditional, holds its own with Gordon, who is properly respectful but far from restrained. They perform eight Gordon originals, and their collaboration "Jaywalkin" with either Jimmy Thomas or Russ Greene on bass and piano, and Butch Azevedo or Joey E. Covington on drums. The lyrics are often witty, the interplay between the guitarists display their contrasting styles, and high points include "Whiskey, Women & Fast Cars," "You Should Have Married a Priest," and "Strings Talkin'."

Levi Platero is from the Navajo Nation of the Southwest region of the United States. With his family band “The Plateros” they emerged on the music scene in 2004 as a blues rock power trio compared to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Los Lonely Boys and ZZ Top. After a decade of touring the US with his family band, a 1 year run as member of the Indigenous blues band, Levi decided it was time to get back to his own music as a solo artist. He then recruited a new band, began touring, and released a self titled EP featuring the single “Take Me Back” which went on to win the 2016 NMMA for Best Blues. Levi Platero is a great example of a guitar player with a gift of guitar playing intuition of much more experienced player. Dan Penn is a legend. There, said it. Songwriter, producer, musician and performer and one of the mainstays of the fabled Muscle Shoals team. Penn wrote numerous songs which were chart hits for the likes of Aretha Franklin back in the sixties and was one of the guiding hands behind Alex Chilton’s first band, The Box Tops. Chances are you have at least one of his classic songs in your collection with the odds on that it’s someone’s version of Dark End Of The Street. For someone who has been reckoned as a personification of “blue eyed soul,” Penn has, in the main, shied from the spotlight with only a handful of solo recordings behind him. There have been brief flurries of activity on the live front, often in tandem with his song writing partner Spooner Oldham, which have allowed him to demonstrate his self-effacing brilliance (check out the 2006 recording, Moments From This Theatre, for proof) but in general he avoids the limelight. It was a surprise then to hear that, now 79 years old, Penn was releasing his first new album in 26 years. It’s no surprise however that Living On Mercy is quite wonderful as Penn captures once again, the soulful sound he helped create five decades ago.Recorded in Memphis and Nashville with a crack team (Milton Sledge (drums), Michael Rhodes (bass), Will McFarlane (guitar) and Clayton Ivey (keyboards), along with a full horn section and female harmonies), it’s evident from the opening bars of the title song that Penn can still write songs which pierce to the heart and deliver them with the wearied resignation of a wounded lover. Living On Mercy is classic Penn in the vein of Dark End Of The Street and the band just nail the sound. The album resounds with such echoes as if time has stood still and The Swampers were still around (indeed, keyboard player Ivey was a Swamper) as they romp through Clean Slate, I Didn’t Hear That Comin’, the funky horn driven Edge Of love and the excellent Leave It Like You Found It, another masterful tearjerker.There are nods to soulful balladeers such as Jerry Butler on I Do and Things Happen but Penn is at his best when he’s singing about heartbreak and one of the highlights of the album is the emotional tug of Blue Motel. A narrative song, it wallows in despair with Penn’s voice comforted by the harmony singers while the band are the embodiment of loneliness with their delicate touch. It’s similar to the sorry tales parlayed by The Delines on their Imperial album but just that bit more soulful. The standout song is Penn’s paean to Nashville’s music row and the many dreams lost and shattered of so many wannabees who got off the bus reckoning they would soon be a star. It crowns an album that is just gorgeous. Penn wears his years well, his voice still in fine fettle, and the arrangements are quite wonderful.There’s been a bit of a resurgence in country southern soul over the past year or two so why not do yourself a favour and buy this rare album from one of its founding members. Living On Mercy is released on CD on 28th August but there’s a later vinyl release in October for those who really want to relive the good old days.

Paul Orta and Steve Coleridge had been planning to record an album of Slim Harpo songs for several years before they found themselves with enough time to do so, as Paul’s European tours were usually too tightly scheduled. The time finally arrived in the Autumn of 2017. Sadly, this was to be Paul’s last recording and he never got to hear the final result. The songs were arrived at by mutual agreement, but it was more of a question of what not to record. Both musicians decided against the songs that had already been covered many times – “I’m A King Bee” being the exception, which was included at the request of the talented producer Florenci Mas. All in all this is a superb tribute to Slim by some great musicians with the love, the knowledge, the chops and the voice to carry it off!

Andersen comes up trumps with a new album, his second solo-album after his 2015 release ‘Six String Renegade’ with the main difference that ‘Victory In Motion’ is a pure instrumental album (the other album had several songs with vocals). Martin J. Andersen only used drummer Klaus Augerbo as a back-up artist, the rest of the instruments, the production, mixing and mastering and the song writing has all been a piece of ingenious homework by Andersen, who also added some keyboards for good measure and sound colouring on top of all that. With an instrumental album I often find that after a while the whole affair starts to sound the same. Joe Satriani and Tony MacAlpine are musicians that in the past and present have managed to deliver instrumental albums that kept your attention and interest. Martin J. Andersen can be put on that list as well. By keeping the sound varied, by shifting gear regularly and especially basing his guitar melodies on a beautiful theme he has managed to compose ten songs that will keep your attention whether they rock out heavy or they have a more melancholic and haunting feel like the song ,,With Hope And Perseverance’’ that is just out of this world and for me the best of all. The way the songs have been put in sequence is also a very important point as now the variation is fully guaranteed. The playing is a bit old school yet with a nice flow. Andersen likes his classic approach. He can shred, he can play with force, he can play with feel but it is always based on a theme and melody. People that like their old school guitar slingers will find lots of material of their gathering on this album but it is not that Andersen is a copycat or just dwelling in the past. He does add his own touch to the proceedings and that leads to an in more ways than one impressive, entertaining, explosive (at times) and haunting album that will capture and impress you. I have already mentioned my favourite track on the album but I urge you if you are a true guitar lover to check this one out and discover for yourself what Martin J. Andersen with the help of a very functional drummer names Klaus Augerbo has in store for you. Not one song that can be called a filler is featured here, they are all standing firmly on their own feet and are as strong as each other. I might be a bit bold here but why the hell not? This CD beats Joe Satriani’s ‘Shapeshifting’ release on points! Definitely a highlight in its genre this year.

She didn´t devote herself to singing the blues until around 1980, when she played the role of Gertrude “Ma” Rainey in a stage musical. Inspired by the music, she worked in numerous Chicago blues clubs, often accompanied by pianists Little Brother Montgomery, Erwin Helfer or Lovie Lee, and sharing the stage with friends like `Blind´ John Davis, Pinetop Perkins, B.B. King, Georgie Fame, and Long John Baldry. Thanks to her dynamic stage presence and she was dubbed “The Bessie Smith of the Eighties” a well deserved title given her strong renditions of vaudeville blues material but her concerts include unforgettable versions of modern blues and jazz styles. She is a popular attraction at festivals all over the world and is sure to be a huge success at Blues to Bop.

It is a hard-hitting North Mississippi Hill Country Blues focused CD. Janky plays all instruments including his One Man Band Drum Co, foot drum with Austin harmonica player Cody Cotton playing harp on almost every track. When Janky’s drummer moved to California, Janky decided to take matters into his own hands and do a full CD using only suitcase foot-drums. This CD sound quality is off-the-chart yet still retains that Janky sound with producer Chuck Ebert at Axon Entertainment manning the mastering.
