There are three musicians with very different musical roots in a band, thus there is an interesting mix of styles. The songs are arranged primarily, as it is best for the song without having to fit into a conventional rock or blues cliche

"Sweet Thing" is the first single and title track of Moonshine Society's second album, written by band leader Black Betty and featuring blistering solos by BMA award-winning harmonica player Jason Ricci and Blues Hall of Fame guitarist Joe Poppen. Moonshine Society gives a big nod to Aesop’s theory that we’re known by the company we keep. So while staking claim to lofty Music Land real estate of their own with a searing, cutting-edge blend of blues, soul, rock and R&B, they continue to rack up powerhouse stripes rubbing elbows with the best. Johnny Winter, Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Tower of Power, John Mayall, Roomful of Blues, John Mayer and Ron Holloway count among the legends the band and its members have accompanied and opened for, not to mention other greats as Tab Benoit, George Clinton and the Funkadelic, Danny Gatton and Samantha Fish.Moonshine Society is the offspring of three promising young music scholars who came together at Boston’s renown Berklee College of Music. Of like minds and musical passions, they united in 2009 to create their own brand of soulful blues, roots rock and old-school R&B–if a fundamental definition is actually required. In truth, they teamed to craft their own formula of music that speaks to the soul and defies the labels of traditional musical confines. The trio sealed their pact one moonlit night in the Anacostia Delta, where then and there, their name became written in the stars. They were to be Moonshine Society. Little did they know on that fateful night that they were buckled in on a launching pad set to rocket them at dizzying speed to performance destinations of their wildest dreams throughout the US and the world. In retrospect, though, it’s little wonder considering the band’s composition of killer talent, now four-plus strong. Leading the troupe is impassioned, soulful singer and songwriter Black Betty, who has shared the stage with such musical greats as Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks and Jack Pearson of Allman Brothers fame, Susan Tedeschi of the Tedeschi Trucks band and Jimmy Vivino from “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”. Part vamp and part glamour girl, she is all-commanding in her on-stage deliveries and becomes pure sorceress spellbinding audiences with her searing hot vocals. To quote from her sizzlingly seductive rendition of “Fever” –what a lovely way to burn.

 6. Something In The Rose - 5:45
 7. Insomnia - 5:49
 8. Strange Days - 7:30
 9. Bottle Opener - 8:18

Ford and Evans have often shared the stage and recorded together over the years and so it’s no surprise that they are joining forces again. During the promotion of the album “Purple House”, Ford spoke enthusiastically about the forthcoming tour in Japan, together with Evans. “Having worked with many musicians in many different configurations and styles, I can say freely that this group of players has a great chemistry and ability to navigate uncharted waters, which is what allows for real improvisation”, Robben Ford says. “Making this recording, playing with these guys, has been one of my favorite experiences in a long, musical life”. Only a few weeks after the tour, the two were in the recording studio, accompanied by a first class rhythm section: Keith Carlock (currently on the drums with Steely Dan) and James Genus, the wonderful bass player who among so many played with Lee Konitz, Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis and Chick Corea.  Bill Evans enthuses about the recording process: “Rarely, but every now and then, likeminded musicians get together to create something that transcends musical boundaries yet can reach a wider audience. To me, the music we created on ?THE SUN ROOM? is timeless. I love blues, jazz, soul, funk and this CD has all of it, performed at the highest level. I couldn’t be happier with this recording. The vibe was so great during this recording process that it was just a joy to be a part of. Well done, guys. Let’s do it again!”.

 9. Change My Ways (feat.Sahra da Silva) - 3:26
10. Grandma Lurleen's Recipe (feat. James Harman) - 3:30

Catawampus is an album that certainly tips its hat, probably a battered fedora worn at a jaunty angle, at the blues musicians of the ’50s and earlier. However, it is no mere pastiche and brings itself up to date with just the lightest dusting of other genres such as soul, gospel as you might expect, and less predicted production approach that lends more to the likes of hip-hop than traditional recording methods. But it all comes down to the music being used to carry that all-important vocal rather than someone just writing blues songs with lyrics tacked on as an afterthought. And that is where the album comes into its own. And as is the way with many blues albums, this is an album of standards, but this is where the twist comes. It is a combination of new production and reinterpreted playing applied to existing songs, often unused takes and shelved recordings that haven’t seen the light of day, and thus you end up with something both fresh and authentic, archival music being brought bang up to date. There are iconic songs such as Mud Morganfield’s take on his father’s Mannish Boy, Sahra De Silva’s adds some sultry jazz-rock vocals to Rollin’ & Tumblin’, and perhaps the most wonderfully weird offering is the last one, essentially James Harman handing out Cornbread cooking tips to an ancient blues-bar piano score. So this is an album of more recent standards being revisited, reworked, re-celebrated for all the right reasons. I guess more than anything; it proves that a good song is a good song no matter what you do with it. Forget the revolution; Catawampus is all about the evolution.

Delbert McClinton is a legend among Texas roots music aficionados, not only for his amazing longevity, but for his ability to combine country, blues, soul, and rock & roll as if there were no distinctions between them. A formidable harmonica player long before he recorded as a singer, McClinton performed with legends like Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reid, and more. McClinton's career began in the late '50s, yet it took him nearly two decades to evolve into a bona fide solo artist. In 1978, Emmylou Harris took his "Two More Bottles of Wine" all the way to the top of the country charts. Over the next years, McClinton placed material with stars like Wynonna, Vince Gill, Lee Roy Parnell, and Martina McBride among others. He has guest appearances with Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, BB King, Mavis Staples, and more.

From the moment the TBBB started in 2005, they have been considered the surprise of the Dutch blues scene. In fact, they won many "Blues CD of The Month" and "Blues CD of The Year" awards with their first two CDs. This CD consists of eight originals and two covers, which starts by getting the heart of this blues fan pounding. There's plenty of "edge" here with quieter moments too. The vocals of J.J. Sharp are very soulful and rich, while the guitar of Kees Dusink is tasteful beyond question, demonstrating a clear understanding of blues stylings and a rare ability to pull the listener into the song. Add a cool harp and you've got a strong blues CD.

Righteous Continental is all about old school vibe, passion, and energy. It's blues but louder, more relevant, and more energetic. Righteous Continental was originally intended to exist only for a single performance on UConn's WHUS Radio- a live performance of a few tunes on the day that guitarist Ryan Newman and drummer Mitch Igneri met for the very first time, via their mutual friend Tim Leffingwell. By the end of that day, however, the band had recorded the first four tracks of what would become their debut album, Psychoactive. Just over a year later, the trio, along with producer Brian Eldridge, are proud to bring you the fruit of circumstance and hard work. Enjoy !

Jimmy Carl Black & The X-Tra Combo - Mercedes Benz

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2002
Time: 53:06
Size: 122,4 MB
Label: Inkanish Records
Styles: Blues/R&B
Art: Full

Tracks Listing:
 1. Mercedes Benz - 4:38
 2. Caladonia - 3:11
 3. I'm Willin' - 5:24
 4. Big Leg Emma - 3:01
 5. Mellow Saxophone - 2:15
 6. (I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man - 3:43
 7. Ocean of Love - 4:02
 8. Lady Queen Bee - 4:20
 9. Low Ridin' Man - 4:43
10. Road Ladies - 4:52
11. Blue Eyed Woman - 3:04
12. Demaziado Corazon - 3:41
13. Black Cadillac - 1:46
14. I Wish - 4:19

While it is certainly one of the best representations of rock veteran Jimmy Carl Black as a vocalist, Mercedes Benz slightly suffers from a touch of schizophrenia, as if it was a "mercy-D" with an ashtray belonging to a lesser brand of car. The effect is not the result of the CD being made up of material from two different sessions, one in 1997 and one in 2001. That production aspect comes together seamlessly. The X-Tra Combo is what might be called a rock & roll and rhythm & blues show band, a couple of horns and a couple of keyboards adding to a sound that is much bigger than the number of people on-stage. On the lion's share of the CD's tracks, Black is backed up on various songs from a repertoire he has slowly been building up in his various activities with bands such as the Grandmothers, the Muffin Men, and so forth. These numbers come off so vividly that it almost seems like carping, or complaining about the ashtray in a beautiful car, to mention that when vocalists from the X-Tra Combo take over and Black steps down there is a diminishing in personality, if not technical quality. The tracks without Black in part go for more of a swing feel, a bit like a Brian Setzer performance in this style. It is good music, but simply not as enjoyable as the Black vocal repertoire, a span that covers authentic blues, goofy Zappa, and vintage psychedelia. "Low Ridin' Man" is a songwriting collaboration from years back with Tjay Cantrelli, once a member of Love as well as Black's Geronimo Black project in the '70s. "Big Leg Emma" and "Road Ladies" are from the Zappa think-tank and like many of the performances here might be the ultimate versions of Black doing these songs, the X-Tra Combo playing as tight as a tick's grip on the back of a dog. The reading of "I'm Willin'" stands up alongside any of the other myriad versions of this Lowell George epistle, and Black's own compositions, including "Lady Queen Bee," are played with punch as opposed to the Grandmothers' light slap.

Raphael Slagg :Guitars, Bass, Vocals, Pounder Engineer (insane), Producer (no clue) Our Families : Thank You for spending your patient time in support of this effort and not locking us out of the hut, You Rock !
In March of 2019 Mark Wilson & Raphael Slagg brought up the subject of getting together and recording things that they would sort of write together, more like Mark would get an idea and on Saturdays around 12 noon they would get together at Blind Fret Studios when life permitted.
LOL.. sometimes yes sometimes no mostly most of the Saturdays were made.
With both that love to play in a blues style yet, have different approaches and playing styles they decided this could be interesting and work out great or..well not so great. They would bang out these ideas together and the wonderful thing is there were no Ego's involved. They are still great friends and work famously together. So famously together that they will be starting the Second Wilson & Slagg album very soon.
Mark & Raphael hope you enjoy what you hear from these 3 to 4 hour Saturday Sessions. They worked really not to hard on these insanity sessions at trying to not really not take it so serious and just write, create, play and Record ! Hey, they know they are not pretty rock stars, just a couple of guitar players that love to play.
Please Enjoy, buy a few copies for friends as drinking social presents. You know they will drink and will steal and rip your copy anyway. Buying them one will show your friends you care.
Thank You for at least spending time to listen.Rock Da Blues On ! Wilson & Slagg

10. Catwalk in Hell (Remix) - 3:26

A collection of fantastic rock, rhythm and blues!
Lightning Hall is a folk, blues and rock artist in New Mexico. Gasoline is his third release of all original music. Fans of Deguello-era ZZ Top and the Fabulous Thunderbirds will like it, but these aren’t re-envisioned versions of classic songs, they are truly original,
It’s like a cruise downtown on a hot, humid summer night in his own hometown of Galveston, Texas. From the roadhouse blues of “Lost In The Shuffle” and “Double Talking Blues” to the funky R&B of “That Joker’s Wild” to the blues-rock slide work of the title track and points in between, Gasoline delivers a bluesy punch.
An album highlight, “These Ain’t the Blues” comes off like classic R&B played by an all-star Southern rock band. But the lyrics, taken with the songs upbeat tempo, give it black humor that’s the antithesis of a “Freebird”. Another is “Just Because You Can”, a Hound Dog Taylor like, raucous electric blues about regrets, highlighted by Lightning’s singular guitar work. It’s an excellent example of what he calls his “homegrown street blues”.
Further showcasing Lightning Hall’s broad skills in songwriting and guitar, Gasoline contains two songs taken from his earlier releases of acoustic music. Catwalk in Hell is an inspired contemporary acoustic blues and Chasing Sunshine is a folksy blues about the Depression era.
Like revered jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, Lightning Hall plays, and plays well, in spite of serious burn injuries to his hands. Gasoline is his third release with the desire to present quality music with an original voice. With the exception of final mastering, vocals by one Deborah L. Frazier and drum loops which he arranged, Lightning Hall is responsible for all the instruments, arrangements, songwriting and production.

Robin Rogers - Back In The Fire

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2010

Size: 109,2 MB
Label: Blind Pig Records
Styles: Blues/Modern Electric Blues
Art: Full

Tracks Listing:
 1. Baby Bye-Bye - 5:02
 2. Second Time Around - 3:22
 3. You Don't Know - 4:52
 4. Need Your Love So Bad - 4:35
 5. The Plan - 3:45
 6. I Know I Done Wrong - 3:33
 7. Ocean of Tears - 4:47
 8. Don't Walk Away Run - 5:57
 9. Hittin' On Nothin' - 4:05
10. Yesterday's Blues - 3:48
11. Robin Rogers / What We Are Worth - 3:36

The follow-up to Robin Rogers' successful 2008 Blind Pig debut is another strong contemporary blues album with roots in noir jazz, torch, gospel, and R&B. Producer Jim Brock keeps the sound more earthy and raw this time around, which suits the singer's husky vocals better than the slightly slicker approach of the previous release. Sporadic horns pump up the volume and bolster the arrangements, but Rogers is at her best on jazz-tinged swampy numbers such as the throbbing "You Don't Know," a particularly edgy reply to those who judge people (perhaps her) without walking in their shoes. She wails and growls on a version of Little Willie John's "Need Your Love so Bad" bolstered by subtle horns, husband Tony's sweet guitar fills, and guest Bob Margolin's steamy solo. Rogers' powerful pipes seem to have been influenced by Irma Thomas, so diving into the New Orleans Soul Queen's sassy "Hittin' on Nothin'" is a logical path. But the part of the song that breaks down to just pounding percussion and voice shows that the younger vocalist isn't afraid to heighten the drama without losing the original's sass. Rogers is also a better-than-average harp player, a somewhat unusual talent for female blues vocalists, and she displays her abilities multiple times on this disc; perhaps best on the stripped-down slow tempo of "Yesterday's Blues" that also features Tony's dark Mississippi guitar shadings. He pulls out slide on the gospel-tinged closer "What We Are Worth" that includes a 30-voice choir singing the title chorus. While the combined voices are mixed too low and the lyrics are somewhat preachy, it's these kinds of quirks that make Rogers more than just another tough-as-leather, throaty female blues belter. She gives Big Maybelle a whirl on "Ocean of Tears," taking the song to a churchy arrangement pushed by Tony's feisty solo. Perhaps best, though, is the dramatic original "Don't Walk Away Run," a topical treatise about spousal abuse. Here the singer urges her girlfriend to take the titular action against an urging, somber beat and her own wailing harmonica. It's a perfect example of how contemporary blues can expand beyond the typical lost-and-found love lyrics into more serious and substantial subject matter without sacrificing the rootsy intensity that lies at the heart of the music.

12. Take Me (I'll Take You There) - 8:09
13. I'm Gonna Get There - 8:01
14. Green Green Grass of Home - 4:36

Gospel soul-rocker Mike Farris follows up his successful 2007 comeback Salvation in Lights with live renditions of most of the songs included on it. The studio tracks that sounded so sanctified receive extended treatments that aren't just longer, but are delivered with a joyous churchy spirit perfect for the subject matter. The full title of the album credits Farris and the Roseland Rhythm Revue featuring the McCrary Sisters, a significant point because the band and backing singers add such vitality and enthusiasm to these blistering versions. Regina McCrary's feisty tambourine is audible on every track and even gets its own solo on "Regina's Tambourine." These songs were cherrypicked from Farris' weekly gigs at Nashville's Station Inn club, an intimate venue that is turned into a revival tent when Farris and his band hit the stage. A full horn section brings even more soul and jazz to the already energized proceedings, pushing the intensity heightened by the live adrenaline. Farris is in fine fettle throughout, clearly inspired by his musicians and especially the harmonizing sisters. The latter get their own showcase during the a cappella "Dig a Little Deeper," a song from the Fairfield Four, the act their dad was a member of. The entire backing ensemble gels on an eight-minute "I'll Take You There" that pays respect to the Staple Singers but raises the temperature on a cover that incorporates rock guitar along with call and response singing that approaches the original in sheer inspiration. Even if this is a stopgap until Farris collects enough material for his next studio set, it's an exuberant, roof-raising document that shows the singer to be a committed and talented gospel vocalist unafraid to incorporate his rock and soul background into the genre without weakening or watering it down. Together with a great band and a fired up audience, the effect is explosive.

Billy Branch, Lurrie Bell & The Sons Of Blues - Chicago's Young Blues Generation

 5. Just A Little Bit - 4:03
 6. I Need You So Bad - 5:24
 7. Mystery Train - 7:08

Another quality L&R Records production that has been saved by a reissue on Evidence Music. Originally recorded in 1982, Chicago's Young Blues Generation features the raw, frantic work of guitarist Lurrie Bell and harp blower Billy Branch, who remain the closest the blues scene has to a modern-day Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. Back in 1982, Bell and Branch were still carving out a sound of their own -- an amalgam of Rice Miller, the West Side guitar slingers (namely Guy and Magic Sam), and the funkier Stax and Hi Records hitmakers. This album consists entirely of reworked blues and R&B covers, each one drawn out by lengthy, tag-team soloing -- sometimes derivative, but more often wildly inspired and unpredictable. Bell, in particular, goes for broke on almost every note, from his manic vocal inflections to the smallest guitar fill. Branch, meanwhile, stays mostly in Junior Wells mode (especially on the two Rice Miller covers, "Help Me" and "Don't Start Me to Talkin'"), although he has a few nice surprises up his sleeve, including the funky octave riff that redefines "Breakin' up Somebody's Home," the album's high point. Originally a minor footnote in modern blues history, Chicago's Young Blues Generation offers a hip coda to the sounds documented in the Living Chicago Blues series. Yes, the '80s blues scene had more to offer than Robert Cray and Stevie Ray Vaughan; you'll find some of the best of it right here.

In the '70s, harmonica man Billy Branch was one of the young upstarts helping to keep the Chicago blues sound alive; in the 21st century, he's matured into one of the Windy City's most venerable blues talents, and as a musician and educator, Branch has spread the word about the blues across the country and around the world. Branch has led the Sons of Blues, his backing band, since the mid-'70s, and despite numerous personnel changes, the SOBs have never wavered in their dedication to pure, unadulterated Chicago blues. Born in Chicago in 1951, Billy Branch moved with his family to California when he was five, but in 1969 he returned to attend the University of Illinois, where he studied political science. Branch had taken up the blues harp, and he was spotted by legendary songwriter and producer Willie Dixon, who recruited Branch to replace the great Carey Bell in his band the Chicago Blues All-Stars. After graduating from college, Branch abandoned his plans to become a lawyer and went into music full-time, touring with Dixon and forming his own band, Billy Branch & the Sons of Blues; the initial lineup featured Lurrie Bell (Carey Bell's son) on guitar and Freddie Dixon (Willie's son) on bass. In 1984, Branch & the Sons of Blues released their debut album, Where's My Money; by this time, the lineup had changed to Carlos Johnson (guitar), J.W. Williams (bass), and Mose Rutues (drums), and the membership of Branch's group would remain fluid in the years to come, though Rutues would spend more than a quarter century with the band. Branch also co-starred on Alligator's 1990 summit meeting Harp Attack! with fellow harp masters Junior Wells, Carey Bell, and James Cotton; he busied himself as a sideman (cutting sessions with Koko Taylor, Eddy Clearwater, Syl Johnson, and Johnny Winter, among dozens of others), and taught with an innovative "Blues in the Schools" program that brought blues history to young people in schools in America, Mexico, Europe, and South America. Branch has received three Grammy nominations during his long recording career, and two W.C. Handy Awards. In 2014, after a ten-year layoff from recording, Branch and his latest lineup of the Sons of Blues returned with a new album, Blues Shock.

Musicians:
Mark Penton — guitar and vocals;
Thomas C. McDonald — bass guitar and vocals;
Eddie Christmas — drums and percussion.

Holding down the “early shift,” preceding Big Al Carson six nights a week at The Funky Pirate on Bourbon Street, Mark Penton and his eponymous group The Pentones have built up a following in their own right. Quiet and low-key, Penton doesn’t get a lot of ink or air time but it would not be an exaggeration to rate him among the top 10 lead guitarists in a city that has no shortage of them. Whether leading his own group or backing another artist – like he did on Smoky Greenwell’s 2008 Between Iraq and a Hard Place – Penton can be counted on to give a stellar performance. Anyone who can make his axe sing like the late, great Duane Allman gets my vote.
On this 11-track CD, recorded live at The Funky Pirate, Penton and band mates Eddie Christmas (drums, percussion) and Thomas McDonald (bass, backup vocals) offer up a smooth mix of slow bluesy numbers and lively up-tempo arrangements. They are, in most cases, long enough for all three musicians to stretch their musical legs and display their respective talents. And, in addition to being an extraordinarily gifted musician and vocalist, Penton is also an accomplished songwriter with four cleverly worded original compositions. “Sunday Funnies,” the opening track, likens the song’s protagonist to a comic strip character (“I feel like a joke / I spend all my money and you love me till I’m broke”). Nicely done covers include “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley,” Neil Young’s “Old Man,” a medley of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and The Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post,” and a medley of classic Mardi Gras Indian songs (“Big Chief,” “Hey Pocky Way” and “Treme Song”). And, if “Don’t Leave Nothing Behind”—another Penton original—doesn’t convince you that he is one of the best guitarists around, nothing will. His solo at the song’s end is a killer!

 5. Rubber Band - 5:31

 8. Mambo Boogie - 5:30

10. Double Trouble - 9:20
11. I was Fooled/She Fooled Me - 5:05

 4. Castle Green - 4:55
 5. Find My Blues - 3:58
 6. Stay for the Night - 4:41

The Back Burner by the incredibly talented Jamey Arent, out July 19th, is one of those EPs that demand peak volume on a quality sound system. Arent is not only a master of guitar, he is a master of groove. And all six tunes, a blend of guitar-driven blues, funk, jazz and rock, are stellar–not just the musicianship but the songs themselves.
Guitarist, songwriter, singer Jamey Arent is based in Los Angeles but his guitar chops have taken him all over the world as a sideman, touring and recording with artists like Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Matthew Morrison, Grammy nominee B. Slade, Nigel Hall and Raquel Rodriguez. His guitar work can be heard backing Smokey Robinson and Trombone Shorty on soundtracks for the Netflix series Motown Magic, on TBS, and Comedy Central shows. Having studied at Oberlin and earning a master’s degree in studio/jazz at USC Thornton School of Music, you’d expect some of the best musicianship on Arent’s debut EP. And you get it. But because the songs are also good, you know something else is going on.
Produced by renowned guitarist/producer Josh Smith, The Back Burner also features a variety of outstanding musicians including Nigel Hall (Lettuce, Soulive) Charles Jones (Raphael Saadiq, Andra Day, Vulfpeck), Amber Navran (Moonchild), Spencer Day and singer Raquel Rodriguez.Title track “The Back Burner” is the first to lure you in, a contemporary jazz-funk fusion instrumental with plenty of groove. It’s a daring move to start off with an instrumental, but Arent pulls it off and then some with his stellar and melodic guitar riffs that never stray from the band as a unit. Besides the tune is catchy with great rhythm. Looking for a mood lift? This is it. Another standout “How Far We’ve Come” featuries R&B/soul singer, Raquel Rodriguez. The song has a 70’s funky vibe but with a modern jazz-fusion twist. Rodriguez’ voice graces this breezy tune with soulfulness, a bit of sultry and some kind of vocal phrasing. She’s on it. As is Jamey Arent with his tasty guitar riffs that are both inventive and melodic. A complete horn section (sax, trombone, trumpet) punches up the track, which paves the way to a short but savage guitar riff and solo by Arent. He and the band are grooving. The Back Burner isn’t just funky jazz fusion. There are some smooth rock tunes, blues and more, all musically dynamic, with some of the tightest musicianship I’ve heard in a while. Sounds to me like they rehearsed some of the funky numbers more than a few times to get such a compact sound, or all the musicians involved are just that good and they nailed it in one or two takes. Given Jamey Arent’s skills, and with Josh Smith at the helm, that might just be the case. The tone shifts with “Castle Green” a stunning jazz instrumental with flavors of blues and rock. The melody is beautiful and reminds me a bit of a couple of Tommy Emmanuel’s instrumental guitar melodies. But Arent has a distinct sound and style all his own–his songs are modern, with hints of Mark Knopfler and Stanley Jordan. This track certainly showcases Arent as a soulful, virtuoso guitar player with plenty of feel. The track is artfully performed by him and the band, featuring guitar overlays and a lovely organ solo. With Arent digging in on guitar as the song builds with some blues and rock overtones, he then dials it back to the verse.
And yet another shift in direction for the EP, Arent roars in with a catchy blues number, “Find My Blues.” He takes the lead vocally on this one, and his voice is smooth, soulful. Hard not to be overshadowed by such stunning guitar playing, but he carves his vocal path around riffs and solos performed with grit and muscle. Another great song. Well-crafted and well played.
Closing the EP, “Stay For the Night” is a fluid rock tune with a Mark Knopfler feel. About a love interest with the possibility of a shared night, it has a bit of a haunting melody. His guitar solo on this one is superb, tuneful and moving. Once again, beautiful.
An impressive debut from a gifted guitarist, songwriter and musician. I look forward to more from Jamey Arent.

Mark Cameron continues his mission to hone his skills as a blues storyteller on his latest release “On A Roll.” Meticulously recorded over the span of a year at Bathtub Shrine studios in Minneapolis, the 14 new original tracks are a true collaboration between Cameron and his band mates. The longtime rhythm section of Scott Lundberg
(bass) and Dan Schroeder (drums) deftly navigate the diverse song palette. Sheri Cameron brings in the spice on saxophone, flute and percussion while Rick Miller delivers the down-and-dirty sleaze on harmonica. The lonesome moan of Miller’s harmonica brings in the opening track, ‘Trouble Brewin,’ a swinging tune that has Cameron laying out the story of him and his gal who find themselves on a collision course. Schroeder then drops a funky beat for the rebuke of a dirty dealer in ‘On Your Way To The Top,’ which features some slick double-lead lines.

 8. Lost in the Wilderness - 3:14
 9. My Everything - 3:42
10. Take These Dreams - 3:15
11. Ten Million Sisters - 2:46

With clear and muscular voice, Billie Williams fronts a team with Stew Cutler/g, Jeremy Mage/key-g, Double Z/g, Tony Allen/dr and a STAXY horn section along with guests on harp, voice and percussion. She’s able to create eerie blues on “Cold November” and gives a film noir atmosphere with “Hour By Hour” while with the  horns gets into a New Orleans funkfest on “Drink From My Cup.” She shows her sweet side on the lovely ballad “My Everything” whle gets ominous with Ruedi Schomo’s harmonica on the title track.A dash of gospel works well on “Lost In The Wilderness” and with a choir, she gets defiant on a chain gang stomp of “Ten Million Sisters.” Don’t cross this lady! NYC singer Billie Williams wears her heart on her sleeve on her new album Hell to Pay, an amalgam of blues, rock, funk and soul. She gets rightfully angry about the dirt brought to light by the #MeToo movement in the title track, tackles a bad breakup (Damn) and finds hope inspiration after she joined the Women's March in Washington in 2017 (Ten Million Sisters). All anger and politics aside she is powerful singer, who can bring the house down and commandeer the spotlights amidst the members of her kick-ass band. Hell to Pay is entertainment with a message. She doesn't take shit from anybody, but she knows damn well that, in order to get people to listen to the words, getting them to dance and singalong as well is asure fire recipe to capture their attention

Ben Levin - Before Me

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2019
Time: 42:55
Size: 98,7 MB
Label:  Vizz Tone Label Group
Styles: Blues/Piano Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. I Feel So Good - 4:05
 2. Pappy - 3:09
 3. This Morning - 2:45
 4. Confessin' the Blues - 4:21
 5. Before Me - 4:10
 6. Creole Kitchen - 2:08
 7. Lonesome Whistle Blues - 3:38
 8. So Soon - 3:48
 9. Load off my Back - 3:15
10. Lightnin' - 2:40
11. I Wanna Hug Ya, Kiss Ya, Squeeze Ya - 4:26
12. Open Late - 4:24

This young college student sounds so good playing the rollicking piano and singing like a veteran that it would be impossible for the uninformed listener to guess that Ben Levin is still not of legal drinking age. Not only that, this is his second album—having received two Blues Blast Music Awards for his first one. You may be thinking we might have the second coming of Harry Connick, Jr. but pianist/vocalist Levin does not lean to pop or schmooze. He’s all about authentic blues, and on this release has surrounded himself with “old school” type players throughout: guitarist Bob Margolin on seven tracks, harp ace Bob Corritore on six tracks and Cincinnati King Records legendary drummer Philip Paul on two.
Half of the material is originals and half is vintage covers. Levin’s relaxed vocals and thoughtful, never-rushed piano style imbue his own title track “Before Me,” which carries with a Fats Domino vibe and, as such, is a tribute to the NOLA piano tradition. He’s got the Chicago sound down, too, as evidenced by his boogie-woogie take on the opener, Big Bill Broonzy’s “I Feel So Good,” and James Cotton’s “Lightnin’,”—helped, of course, by veterans of that style, Margolin and Corritore. Kansas City blues style is represented in Jay McShann’s “Confessin’ the Blues.”
Levin is not the only vocalist; Kennedy McPherson takes a turn on the Levin tune “Pappy” and Chris Douglas and Mel Hatch Douglas sing on the standout track “Lonesome Whistle Blues,” one of two that features drummer Philip Paul. Paul himself hails from Levin’s hometown of Cincinnati, and recorded the tune with Freddie King several decades ago. Paul also plays on the Levin original, the shuffling “Load Off My Back,” (“everything’s right on track”), inspired by another of the early King Records tunes. Levin says, “At 93 years old, there is a 75-year difference in age between us, yet we are still able to lock in. It shows the music is alive, not just a stack of old records in the corner of your room.”
It’s remarkable to consider that Levin logged in time in back room clubs or juke joints while developing his sound. He’s obviously both an astute listener and a blues natural. Levin’s loose effusive style proves irresistible on the old chestnut “I Wanna Hug Ya, Kiss Ya, Squeeze Ya” with Corritore and Margolin soloing, as well as they both do on the slow-burning instrumental closer, “Open Late,”which they helped write.
Make no mistake, Ben Levin, the innocent-looking youngster brings the real stuff. ~ Jim Hynes
