In September 2004 Eugene recorded his CD, Coming Home, at The Zone Studio in Dripping Springs, Texas; using a full horn section, led by Seth Kibel, on several tracks. He also had Texan guitarist and friend Rocky Athas joining him on two cuts.
b. 1963, USA. Raised in Texas and Louisiana, while still a small child Bridges performed on stage with his father, guitarist Slim ‘Hideaway’ Bridges. Briefly forsaking the guitar, he joined his brothers to form a gospel group, the Bridges Brothers, and he also sang with the choir of his local church. He continued to perform both sacred and secular music, the latter with his own R&B band, the Five Stars. In his mid-teens Bridges served in the US Air Force and in his late teens, military service now behind him, he sang and played in the New Chosen Singers and then the Mighty Clouds Of Joy. A later group was the Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges Band, with which he toured nationally from his Houston, Texas home base. He also visited Europe as a solo act, playing in France and the UK where he became popular first with the Memphis Blues caravan and later in his own right, becoming highly rated in blues magazine polls in both countries. It was a UK company, Armadillo Records, that saw Bridges’ potential and signed him in 2000. In addition to touring Europe, Bridges also visited Australia and New Zealand where he attracted enthusiastic audiences.
A vibrant and enthusiastic singer and guitarist, Bridges brings fire and intensity to contemporary blues, which he laces with hints of his gospel singing past.

Mick writes:
Here's the MC Band live in Portland Oregon, way back in 1987 - Saturday night, 7th February/The band includes Rod De'Ath on drums - he'd finished his six year stint with the Rory Gallagher Band and joined me on a couple of my US tours in the late 80s. On bass is Emerson Zachery Junior, aka Scott Free, but generally known as Zack. On keyboards is Dave Deaz. The venue was a club called 13 Grand.. located at 13 Southeast Grand Avenue in Portland Oregon - the Rose City. It was run by Carl and his wife Katy - they had always made us welcome at their original venue, the Dublin Pub, and took us with them to the larger, more central, 13 Grand. As far as I know the place never closed, and there was always music going on - the breakfast gig, the lunchtime bands. We'd play three one hour sets from about 9 pm to 1.30. This Saturday night we were recorded by our friend Dale Christensen - you can hear him shouting encouragement - although the audience was not exactly reticent. They were mainly a dancing crowd, but as you can tell here, they were really listening as well. I've got the entire gig on cassette tape, but have picked out six tracks as being representative of the evening. Of course the sound quality is less than perfect, but I've sharpened it up as much as possible, and I thank Dale for making the recording at all. Mainly blues standards, with a couple of MC rockers thrown in. Mainly up tempo, with a slow blues here and there so as, as Alexis Korner once put it, the band can get its breath back. Opening track here is Elmore's "It Hurts Me Too" - irreverently known on the South London circuit as "It Hurts My Toe". The Gibson sounding nice through an American Marshall amp which I was able to get hold of, although the photos I have show my old Peavey. I don't know .. maybe a different trip. Then into one of mine - the old SALT stalwart "Full Moon Boogie". Rod knew how to boogie, and there's great interplay with Zack. And then.. "Black Magic Woman". This has never been in regular set, but I found it was perfect for those long three set club dates. Just right for the last set when everyone was settling down and you could just get into a nice groove and play those fabulous Peter Green guitar lines. A pure pleasure.
I always liked to do a version of Elmore's Madison Blues on these gigs. I was actually staying at a friend's house on S.E. Madison, and my wife is Lindy Lou.. or Linda if you want to be formal. She would have been there on the night - hopefully dancing with one of our friends. Plus the fact that people knew the song from the George Thorogood version, so the moment they recognised it they'd be up on the floor and rockin'. So here it is, at full throttle, with my early attempts at doing the showy off flash bit in the middle. All good.
Muddy's "19 Years Old" was my slow blues of choice for a while. Here it is with a fiery solo - messy but real. And finally, the encore "Nothin' but a Fool". This is introduced by Carl, who was always effusive in his praise. He was a very nice man and I'm glad to include a little of his warm tones on this record. We rip into "Nothin' but a Fool" from my second album "Rock Me" with surprising energy considering it was the end of a three hour gig - again it's messy but it rocks. And no, it wasn't written about anybody - no hidden messages - just a made up rock'n'roll song. Carl and Rod De'Ath are sadly no longer with us. Myself, Lindy Lou, Zack and Dale are all alive and well. I don't know where Dave is, but I thank him for doing a good solid job on these gigs - always easy to work with. Our agent Steve Hettum also passed - we wouldn't have been there at all without him. Anyway this is a nice record of fun times back in the Rose City, rockin' it up on a Saturday night on S.E. Grand Avenue.

Thought by many to be deceased, singer James Davis returned from musical invisibility to make this sparkling comeback set for Black Top. His hearty pipes sounding anything but over-the-hill, Davis roared a combination of his own fine tunes and remakes of songs first done by Bobby Bland, James Carr, and Wynonie Harris in front of a terrific combo (guitarists Anson Funderburgh and Clarence Hollimon, saxist Grady Gaines). A revival of his own slow blues "Your Turn to Cry" recalled Davis's early-'60s glory days.

The John Frick Band has evolved from years of performing the blues in different band formations. Originally we focused on playing a range of blues standards, but we felt drawn to writing and performing our own blues music. Although our brand of the blues cannot be described as traditional blues music, we remain undeniably a hot-blooded blues band.
In 2011 our debut album, "Boogie With The John Frick Blues Band", was released on iTunes and Spotify. It featured original songs in a range of blues styles, including a special Bo Diddley-style track, "She Ain't No Red Hot Lover", with West African musician, Serigne CM Gueye, on percussion and backing vocals.
By the time our next album, “Urban Crossroads”, was released in February 2014, we had officially taken on the name “John Frick Band”. Rockabilly guitarist, Roel Loen, who had helped us out on bass guitar had left the band and Rob Nagel, South African bassist with the legendary Blues Broers, helped out with bass and blues harp on the album. It also marked the start of our collaboration with producer Peter Struijk from Blueshine Records. By the time the album was released, Nico Hart had joined as our full-time bassist. Tom Moerenhout took care of the horn parts. After its release, the album received excellent reviews internationally.
Our next album, “K.02 Sessions”, was released in March 2015. Tom Moerenhout joined the line-up as a full-time member of the band. Our collaboration with Blueshine Records continued and the album featured additional guest performances by Rob Nagel, Peter Struijk and Debora Hulskamp.
The band performs on a regular basis at various blues venues and festivals. Highlights include The 2012 Table Mountain Blues Festival (South Africa), Zoetermeer Blues Festival, Loosduinen Blues Festival, Haagse Notuh Festival, Bluescafe L’Esprit, Apeldoorn Bluescafe, The Brussels Rhythm and Blues Club, Blues In Wijk and many more.
Today is release new album with John Frick, Michel de Man, Nico Hart, Michael Eschauzier, Aad van Pijlen (Cora), Nicko Christiansen, Harm Van Sleen and Rob Nagel.

10. In My Lonely Room - 4:32
11. 80 West - 2:47
12. Fade To Blue (Reprise) - 4:35

Love Scars is an impressive debut from Bill Perry, a singer-songwriter that fuses '70s folk with blues. Perry occasionally can sound too earnest -- which could be expected from a former supporting musician for Richie Havens -- but there's genuine skill and craft in his songs. His lyrics are strong and melodies are sturdy, and they're delivered with conviction, which makes up for the occasional awkward moments that should be expected from a debut record. Still, those little missteps are nowhere near enough to prevent Love Scars from being a promising debut.

In this album, Ivan has written a picture through words and songs of his experiences traveling through local communities in Kimberley over a 20-year period. Charming to say the least. And I will present this footage in the not too distant future for your viewing pleasure.
Born in Alexandria, Egypt and migrated to Perth in 1963, Ivan Zar was drawn to the Blues at an early age and taught himself the harmonica and Delta Blues style Guitar. In 1968, he formed his first band "King Biscuit Co", as well as writing his own songs. After playing in several bands, Ivan formed a band called The Elks in 1975, which was to introduce the Chicago style of Blues to the mainstream. The band toured the South West and across to major cities in the Eastern States. They had the opportunity to support B.B King, Rory Gallagher, Joe Cocker and Ike and Tina Turner, and recorded an album Refer to Drawer, which is now a sought after Australian Blues album by blues affeciandos. In 1981, Ivan recorded some of the material that he had written and worked in a duo with Brian Fitzgerald called The Deltatones. They worked in cafe's, folk festivals, small bars and supported John Mayall, Mick Jagger, John Hammond and Leo Kottke. In 1983, they recorded Me and the Devil as well as a cassette Harp of the West, which featured some of WA's most prominent harmonica players. Both of these recordings are also sought after blues fans alike. Going solo again, Ivan had the opportunity to play with such acts as The Black Sorrows, Paul Kelly, Bondi Cigars and Cold Chisel. From 1992-95, he opened The Bindoon Rock Festival and has been a part of Blues at Bridgetown since it's inception in 1993. During this period Ivan was busking in the streets of Northbridge every friday and saturday night - occasionally with other players. He also got the chance to start touring throughout outback WA, playing in pubs, Aboriginal communities, schools and many royal shows. 1995 saw the release of Ivan's first CD Track me Down, for which he received the 'Outstanding Recording Award' at that year's Blues at Bridgetown. In 1996, with John Wilson, he toured Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. 1998 saw the release of Ivan's second CD Afrika Tide and he again toured the eastern states. While there he had the opportunity to record with some friends from Perth and came up with the next CD Ivan Zar's Deltatones. Back in Perth, a chance meeting in May 2003 with 13-yr-old Ben Witt saw the two working in local pubs and a live recording at the Perth Blues Club in June. They also performed at Bridgetown Blues in 2004 and 2006. Both Ben and Ivan were invited to be part of the West Australian showcase at Goulburn Blues Festival in NSW in 2007.

Jackie Payne (born September 26, 1945) is an American blues singer. He was nominated in both 2007 and 2008 for the Blues Music Award for Best Male Soul Blues Artist; an album he recorded with Johnny Otis was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1993. He is the nephew of the blues harmonica player Neal Pattman.
Payne was born in Athens, Georgia, United States. His original birth name was William, and he was known as Willie during childhood. He trained as a singer in his father's gospel choir and learned the blues from his uncle, Neal Pattman, who played harmonica. By the age of 13, he was singing professionally with the Allen Swing Band in Atlanta. He later joined an R&B group called The Serenaders. He moved to Houston, Texas in 1963, at the age of 17, and recorded his first regional hit, "Go Go Train" b/w "I'll Be Home" on the Jetstream label in 1965. The success of that single led to a 45-city tour with the Stax revue, which at the time featured headliners like Otis Redding (to whom Payne's voice has sometimes been compared), Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas, and Carla Thomas. His career was checked when he entered the United States Army in 1968. He then settled in Culver City, California, performing at The Cover Girl Club with Pee Wee Crayton.
Payne was the lead singer for the Johnny Otis Show for fifteen years. He recorded several albums with Otis's band and appeared for many years on the Johnny Otis Saturday morning live radio show broadcast on KPFA-FM. Spirit of the Black Territory Bands, recorded by The Johnny Otis Orchestra, featured Payne on vocals and was nominated for a 1993 Grammy Award. Payne's 1997 CD, A Day In the Life of a Blues Man, was produced by Kenny Blue Ray for the British JSP Records label. The Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band
Payne and blues guitarist Steve Edmonson, formed the Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band in the late 1990s. The band, which was based in the San Francisco Bay Area, has recorded three albums, Partners in the Blues on the Burnside Records label, Master of the Game and Overnight Sensation on the Delta Groove label. The band won the Contemporary Blues Award for Best Soul Blues Album of 2006 for the Master of the Game.

10. Rock Me With a Steady Roll - 5:07
11. Somewhere Down the Line - 4:04
12. I'll Drink Your Bathwater Baby - 8:29

Jackie Payne began singing professionally at the age of thirteen in his hometown of Athens, Georgia then relocated to Houston, Texas at seventeen were he recorded his regional hit “Go Go Train” on the Jetstream label. The success of that recording prompted Stax Records to ask him along on a forty-five city tour with the Stax Revue featuring Otis Redding, Sam And Dave and Rufus and Carla Thomas. After that he was the featured vocalist with The Johnny Otis Orchestra for fifteen years. He and blues guitarist Steve Edmonson formed the Jackie Payne-Steve Edmonson Band in the late 1990s. This CD was finished in the spring of 2014, but plans to release it were thwarted when in October of that year Jackie suffered a major stroke. Guitarists Kid Anderson and Anthony Paule picked up the baton to make Jackie’s longing to it release it come to fruition. Six of the twelve tunes on this CD were written or co-written by Jackie.
Jackie’s blues-rhythm & blues approach owes a lot to old school blues supper club artists, mainly Bobby “Blue” Bland. He knows his way around the blues and isn’t afraid to get a little bawdy at times. He also interjects some spoken comments, which is somewhat of a blues tradition. The production by himself, Kid Anderson and Anthony Paule is solid as a rock and benefits greatly from the top rate musicians assembled here.
Jackie leads right off with his warm and smooth with rough edges voice with the melancholy “Back To Normal” with tinkling piano, horns and Kid Anderson’s tasteful guitar solos. The self-penned title track is a nice stroll through Jackie’s recollections of his blues life featuring Aki Kumar on harmonica and Lorenzo Farrell on organ. Anthony Paule’s slide guitar and Aki’s harp give “Full Moon Blues” a nice and lazy blues vibe that takes you right to a Chicago blues joint.
Jackie’s rougher vocal performance on “When The Blues Comes Knockin'” brings the best moments of Bobby “Blue” Bland to mind. Kid Anderson plays B.B. King to Jackie’s vocal. He delivers an old school blues ballad on “Wife, Woman, Hootchie”. Kid Anderson on rhythm guitar and Anthony Paule’s lead guitar along with Lorenzo Farrell’s organ and Bob Welsh’s piano sync-in with the horn section to conjure up some feel good blues on “Kicking Back With The Blues”.
Bob Welsh’s boogie-woogie piano energizes the ode to clubbing “Feel Like Doing My Thing”. “Six Million Dollar Man” is sheer love=making braggadocio and bravado. Bob Welsh’s late night piano features on the smooth and sexy ballad “Rock Me With A Steady Roll”. It also includes some nice horn solos. Ari Kumar’s harp blends in nicely with the horn section on the bouncy “Somewhere Down The Line”, a lovely “you’ll be back” narrative. Sadly things end on kind of a sour note. Jackie delves into dirty old man territory on “I’ll Drink Your Bathwater Baby”. It includes too much talking and is over long. It isn’t the subject matter that bothers me, it’s the poor execution of the song.
So we get a fine blues and rhythm & blues album with one minor flaw. The song writing is solid and backed by top notch players. Here’s hoping Jackie recovers to deliver more of his classy music.

Ain’t Superstitious, are a five piece band that plays an eclectic brand of soul blues, infused with shots of jazz, gospel & Americana.
As a band we love the fun & freedom of playing live. In essence, this recording is a snapshot of a day in the life of a blues band. We setup, plugged in and played a live set but without the crowd. Most songs were done in 2 or 3 takes. In the true blues tradition we tried to keep things tight, but loose enough to know that we were still having fun! Hope you enjoy.

American Blues legend, the multi-instrumentalist Lucky Peterson, is one of the most riveting performers of the modern blues era. A searing lead guitarist, a rich and powerful organist, and a first-rate vocalist, Lucky’s musicianship effortlessly translates gospel, rock, and jazz into a 21st century blues. Many reminisce about the bygone days of the blues, but its flame still burns hot in the hands of Lucky Peterson!

Freddie King, live at Ebbet's Field, Denver on May 27th, 1974. Colarado's Ebbets Field was a familiar blues venue that had been graced by all and whose audience would never tire of visiting greats. The arrival of Freddie King on May 27th, 1974 in Denver, promised an abundance of euphoric blues picking from a legendary Chicago figure. His early death may have cheated many out of what could have been and while it commands an incredible depth of sadness and reflection, he is remembered for a career that not only carved out a unique style of blues, but hugely inspired those around him, such as Eric Clapton. Klondike present the entire original KCUV FM broadcast of Freddie King live from Ebbets Field, Colarado on May 27th, 1974. Professionally remastered original broadcast with background liners, interviews, and rare archival photos.

Down-and-dirty blues don't get any downer or dirtier than James "Son" Thomas. A former sharecropper and grave digger (as well as an accomplished sculptor) who was shot by an ex-wife, Thomas, to put it mildly, lived the blues life he sang about. Eventually his hard road took him all the way to the White House, where he sang the blues for the Reagans (those noted blues lovers) in 1982. This Evidence collection of early-'80s performances features Thomas accompanying himself on acoustic and electric guitar on a set of blues standards associated with his Mississippi Delta mentors Elmore James, Arthur Crudup, and Sonny Boy Williamson. Compare the two versions of "Catfish Blues" for an example of what "unexpurgated" really means.

Nashville producer Fred James is as much a documentarian as he is musician and entrepreneur, and his Bluesland Productions is considered one of the world's foremost independent music companies devoted to blues, soul, and American roots music. On February 3, 1954, Fred James was born in San Antonio, TX, the family moving to Wichita, KS, where he was raised. His father, Fred James, Sr., is a noted jazz trumpet player who recorded with the Johnny Harris Quartet in the '70s. His uncle, Doug James, is a New York studio musician who has worked with Paul Butterfield, Orleans, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and many others. With radio in the mid-'60s being very eclectic, and with jazz and blues constantly played around the house while he was growing up, Fred found that he liked it all, inspirations and influences coming from Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Buck Owens, and, according to the producer/musician, "all of the rock groups." His first attendance at a concert was the Jimmy Smith Trio with the Ramsey Lewis Trio; the second was a Dick Clark road show with Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon, Keith Allison, Paul Revere & the Raiders, and the Animals.  To say his family is musical is an understatement, with two of his brothers also in the business as recording artists and studio musicians. James moved to Nashville in 1973, as it was still wide open to young talent in those days. He immediately found work in the studios and on the road with artists like Billy Joe Shaver, Vern Gosdin, and Townes Van Zandt, among others. Listed in Frets magazine as one of Nashville's top studio musicians, James had an artistic side that also leaned toward pursuing a career in songwriting. While writing for Mel Tillis' publishing company, he got his first cut with the Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose. In 1977 he recorded his first LP, Alfred James, for the tiny Cascade label. By the early '80s James was playing guitar with Dr. Hook and the band was using the Memphis Horns to augment the lineup. When the tour was over, James was asked to become the singer and guitarist with the Memphis Horns. He did this for the next two years until the Horns became too busy in the studio to continue live work. At this point he began writing for Audigram Music, home of J.J. Cale. He wrote "Full Moon on Main Street," which was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award as Best Blues Song of 1987. The following year he wrote "Lightning" for Johnny Winter's Winter of '88 album. The success of these two songs enabled James to start his own publishing company and really pursue the thriving "blues boom" of the '90s. Song after song started being recorded by artists like Koko Taylor, Johnny Winter, Junior Wells with Bonnie Raitt, Son Seals, C.J. Chenier, Katie Webster, and Charlie Musselwhite, and James secured five Grammy nominations in the process. He formed Freddie & the Screamers with members of the Amazing Rhythm Aces and Willie Dixon's band. The group recorded four CDs for various small labels in Europe, Australia, and the U.S.
The list of people Fred James has played guitar for is a veritable who's who of pop, soul, jazz, blues, and roots music: Johnny Copeland, Arthur Williams, the Jelly Roll Kings, Billy Joe Shaver, Bo Diddley, the Carter Brothers, the Memphis Horns, Dr. Hook, the Excello Legends, Tommy Tutone, Townes Van Zandt, Dickey Lee, the Delta Jukes, Black Tie, Vern Gosdin, Bobby Hebb, and many, many others. As a producer, he recorded the likes of the Sam Lay Blues Band, Homesick James, Frank Frost, Roscoe Shelton, and Earl Gaines for labels like Black Top, Evidence, Telarc, Ichiban, Appaloosa, Hightone, Black Magic, and on and on. With this success, Bluesland began acquiring classic master recordings from the '50s and '60s, purchasing the catalogs of Champion, Poncello, Ref-O-Ree, and Bullet/Sur-Speed/Delta. This classic blues and soul has been reissued all over the world. He has performed across Europe with his wife, Mary-Ann Brandon, and also with Frank Frost and the Jelly Roll Kings, the Excello Legends (Roscoe Shelton and Earl Gaines), and Charles Walker and Johnny Jones. James was the guitarist for the Amazing Rhythm Aces since their 1990s reunion, and can also be heard on their Nothin' But the Blues disc. James has also recorded three solo albums and tours and performs with his own group when time permits. He started his own ROAD Records label in partnership with Brandon, with a release that features his father on trumpet and members of the Amazing Rhythm Aces guesting. In his spare time he is usually found writing liner notes for Aim Records reissues of the Sound Stage Seven series featuring music by Moody Scott, Earl Gaines, and Geater Davis, and other labels like Black Magic Records, Ace Records (U.K.), and Germany's Bear Family Records. A book entitled The Big Bang: The American Musical Renaissance 1925-1975 was in the works in 2006. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi Fred James has played guitar for Johnny Copeland, Arthur Williams, The Jelly Roll Kings, Billy Joe Shaver, Bo Diddley, The Carter Bros., The Memphis Horns, Dr. Hook, The Excello Legends, Tommy Tutone, David Houston, The International Submarine Band, The Sam Lay Blues Band, Homesick James, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Billy C. Farlow, Townes Van Zandt, Roscoe Robinson, Orion, Kip Anderson, O.B. McClinton, Ronnie Sessions, Dickie Lee, The Delta Jukes, Black Tie, Vern Gosdin, Bobby Hebb and many, many others. Fred has five Grammy Award nominations for songs he wrote on albums nominated in the "Best Traditional Blues Album" or "Best Contemporary Blues Album" category. Fred was nominated for a Nashville Music Award in the "Best Producer" category. He also won a Nashville Music Award for producing the "Outstanding Blues Album". Fred has three W.C. Handy Award nominations. One in the "Best Blues Song" category (for his composition "Full Moon On Main Street") and two for producing albums nominated for the "Best Comeback Album" category. Fred has won the Canadian Real Blues award twice (2003 and 2004) in the catagory of "Blues Crusader" for furthering Blues music in the recording industry.

Taylor's nickname "Fingers" was given to him in 1969 by John "Johnny Rock" Buffaloe (so nicknamed by Taylor) during their time in The Buttermilk Blues Band in Jackson, Mississippi. At the time, Taylor played keyboards for the band, hence the nickname "Fingers." Taylor began playing harmonica during his time in the BBB. Currently, Greg Taylor is battling Alzheimer's.

Just because Chicago is the undisputed home of the blues, that doesn't mean that talented blues musicians can't be found right here in our own backyard.
Harmonica player, vocalist and Lake Geneva resident Geneva Red has just released her debut Alley Ways, a smokin' little record that is filled with the sound that made the Windy City famous; electrified Delta blues. Covering bluesmen such as Muddy Waters, Mose Allison, Big Bill Broonzy and Jimmy Reed it's apparent whose big shoulders this chip has been chiseled from.
Instead of emulating the vocal stylings of female blues artists before her such as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey or Koko Taylor, Red's vocal's, while probably still not fully realized, range from dry and seductive on "Baby What You Want Me To Do" and "Your Mind Is On Vacation" to Southern roadhouse queen in the Marcia Ball tradition on Muddy Water's "Sugar Sweet".
What Red does have down to a finger-lickin' science, however, is her amazing harmonica playing. With heavy influences from her mentors and pioneering blues harmonica players, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter and Junior Wells, Red creates wonderfully textured tones and sumptuous phrasings. On Dizzy Gillespie's "Birk's Works" she breathes a sultry moodiness over the hypnotic fret work of guitarist Jackie 5 & Dime. Along with her tight backing band The Roadsters, featuring bassist and vocalist Mark Sorlie, Dean Malsack on piano, drummer Elgin Anderson and 5 & Dime on guitar, they manage to transform Duke Ellington's jazz production "Thing's Ain't What They Use To Be" into a rip-roaring Chicago-styled blues free-for-all. On the cover of Eddie Boyd's "Vacation From The Blues" Red's vocals and raucous harmonica conjures up all the heat and humidity of the Mississippi Delta while the Roadsters lay down a frenzied rhythm that Red rides out with a smoldering harmonica solo on the self-penned "Red's Romp".
Sure, she's probably never been evicted for not paying the rent, had to climb out a lover's bedroom window when his wife came home or labored long and hard in the fields, but don't tell her, because it sure as a hell sounds like she has.

With a foot-shuffling rhythm section and steamrolling harmonica on the lead-off instrumental track, "First Tune, First Set," local blues artist Geneva Red sets the tone for a rollicking, rip-roaring ride through her second full length release, entitled In The Red. Following up their strong debut album, Alley Ways, singer / songwriter / harmonica player Red and fellow Roadsters - guitarist / songwriter Jackie 5 & Dime, bassist Mark Sorlie and drummer Earl Howell, have incorporated the talents of blues stalwarts Floyd Murphy on guitar ("Big Mama" Thorton, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Johnny Ace, Matt "Guitar" Murphy) and drummer Sam Carr (Sonny Boy Williamson II, Robert Nighthawk, Big Jack Johnson) on this tasty second helping. Recorded in the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, the results are a major step forward for the band. The rhythm section is a metronomic spine-snapper, while 5 & Dime and Murphy's relentless guitar licks inflict a 'say uncle' pain (and, man, does it hurt good). As always, Red's harp playing is superb (one listen to her harmonica turned southbound freighter on "My Tribute To DeFord" will attest to this), but on In The Red her vocals are richer and more mature then in the past. Instead of playing second fiddle to her instrumental virtuosity, her pipes are now riding shotgun, and grabbing for the wheel. While their debut was filled mostly with cover songs, In The Red features eleven strong, self-penned blues numbers by both Red and Jackie 5 & Dime that feel like the real deal. From roadhouse rockers like "Dancin' Shoes Shuffle," "Give Yourself A Break," complete with penitentiary call-and-response vocals, and "Syatic Blues," with a soul-selling slide guitar, to the more introspective numbers like "Hung 'n Tumbling," with Red's sultry vocals and a stinging Buddy Guy-flavored guitar solo, as well as the bone-dry Delta dirge "Cotton Ain't King," Red and company serve up a satisfying, soulful feast, with everything but the collard greens. Paired with her juiced-up harp, Red belts out her own version of sexual double-entendres, which were a staple to early rural blues, on the plugged-in Chicago-styled stomper "Breakfast Song," while a jazzier side of the band is shown on the hip instrumental "Red's Theme." On the number, "Cotton Ain't King," Red soulfully laments over the passing of blues greats, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Muddy Waters, Lightning Hopkins and Junior Wells. While it's true the majority of the original bluesmen have left us, Geneva Red and The Roadsters are doing a bang-up job of keeping the soul of their music alive.

When Frank Ace plays the blues on his guitar, it is a rich sound that is smooth and demonstrates his mastery of a technique that has become his recognizable signature. Frank developed his love for the blues when he lived with his grandparents. He creates hard, vigorous sustaining notes that magically flow into resonant bright hues. Ace gets beyond just creating a good band, and this is explained by the unique, stylized background scratching that sets him apart from all the rest. The Frank Ace sound is the blues - full-bodied, energized, synchronized and radiant -- making it come alive on concert stages, and every club on the blues circuit.

12. The Sky Is Crying - 5:09
13. Truck Load Of Lovin' - 4:54
14. Call My Job - 5:02

When Chico Banks played guitar with the Staple Singers, his playing was hard, uncluttered, and straight to the point, yet it was tempered to fit right in with the Staples' sound. Banks' father Jessie was with the Mighty Clouds of Joy and also a bluesman, and his brother Stanley Banks is a keyboardist, with whom he co-wrote two of these songs. His playing is influenced by blues, rhythm & blues, gospel, and the psychedelia of Jimi Hendrix, especially on his tasty, never burdensome use of the wah-wah pedal. His voice is more than adequate for the job, but the cuts that stand out are those on which he concentrates on his guitar. On "It Must Be Love," Mavis Staples does the vocals, and you can feel the electricity between the two born of a mutual respect for excellence. On "All Your Love," he has "Big James" Montgomery handling the vocals and lets loose some fine playing through that wah-wah pedal. This is one of the finest guitar players to come down the avenue in a good stretch, and he can only mature from here. This is no throwaway first album, with one good cut and lots of dross; its nearly 70 minutes are filled with some mighty fine playing.

James Luther Dickinson and North Mississippi Allstars - I'm Just Dead I'm Not Gone

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2012
Time: 42:48
Size: 98,5 MB
Label: Memphis International / Merless Records
Styles: Blues/Country Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Money Talks - 5:35
 2. Ax Sweet Mama - 3:55
 3. Codine - 6:28
 4. Red Neck, Blue Collar - 4:47
 5. Kassie Jones - 4:55
 6. Rooster Blues - 3:05
 7. Never Make Your Move Too Soon - 4:01
 8. Truck Drivin Man - 4:24
 9. Down In Mississippi - 5:33

Despite Memphis music enigma Jim Dickinson's long, winding, illustrious, and infamous musical career as a musician and producer, he never released a live in Memphis album. Until now that is. I'm Just Dead, I'm Not Gone fills that gap in his catalog. Recorded in 2006 at the New Daisy Theater on Beale Street in Memphis, the album pairs the music legend on piano and lead vocals with his kids' band, the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson, guitar; Cody Dickinson, drums; Chris Chew, bass), and special guest Jimmy Davis on rhythm guitar and backing vocals in a riotous set of blues, R&B, and country covers played at maximum speed and volume. It was all captured in the moment -- without further window dressing -- by Kevin Houston. From the elder Dickinson's poignantly surreal poem that opens Sir Mack Rice's "Money Talks" (in which, at 90 mph, he discusses everything from prayer, George W. Bush, honey, bad whiskey, and money), the proceedings are off to an uproarious start. It's raw and non-stop. While everything here works exactly as it should, there are some real standouts. The snaky blues cover of Buffy Sainte Marie's "Codine" is among the most original readings of the tune ever, with ghostly piano and Luther's deep blues lead guitar. The rocked-up party blues in Furry Lewis' "Kassie Jones" is another. Things get country-fried on Bob Frank's "Red Neck, Blue Collar" and Terry Fell's anthem "Truck Drivin' Man." Closer "Down in Mississippi" features a smoking extended guitar break by Luther, who shines throughout. But the real star is the man the album is named after. His command of the proceedings is no less authoritative than Jerry Lee Lewis' and just as unhinged as Charlie Feathers'. A cursory listen will offer the mistaken impression that this is a glorified bar gig. That said, a slightly deeper one will yield proof of Dickinson's prophetic, historical genius: in his persona and practice, he embodies the crossroads of all American roots song forms, from folk and blues to R&B and rock. His advice for his sons -- ...It's okay to rush, but don't drag..." -- is proven here time and again. At a shade over 42 minutes, I'm Just Dead, I'm Not Gone is a concise yet fully fleshed, sweaty, grimy, gritty exercise in everything that is truly great about rock & roll.

Jim Mesi has been a cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest music scene for years. Originally from Portland, Mesi was one of the founding members of Brown Sugar, the original R&B band in the Pacific NW, and a seminal influence on the NW blues scene: Brown Sugar spawned the Paul Delay Band, for which Jim was the lead guitarist for several years. But Mesi hasn't confined his talents to just the local scene. He has toured and played with many nationally renowned acts, including B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, Albert Collins, Big Walter Horton, Johnny Otis, John Hammond, Mary Wells, and a host of other top entertainers. Jim's guitar style is unique, masterful and evocative. He has the rare ability to engage audiences of all kinds and tastes with his powerful, melodic and emotional artistry. He has won numerous awards, including best band, best guitarist nine times and five awards from Fresh Weekly Magazine. He was inducted into the Cascade Blues Association's Blues Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2009. He has received consistently enthusiastic reviews from many major newspapers and has been featured in Rolling Stone and Sunset magazines. One review summed it up well: "Guitar monster Mesi is one of the few players who give the impression that every possible sound and solo is at his fingertips… you will not only dance the night away but also witness a graduate-level seminar in riffology."
After his lengthy stint on the national scene, Mesi returned to his home town and formed the Jim Mesi Band in 1989. His experience, uncanny musicianship, and solid professionalism have resulted in one of the most sought after, frequently booked and highly regarded bands around. Playing an ever-changing, eclectic, and crowd-pleasing blend of musical styles, the Jim Mesi Band plays clubs, concerts and festivals all over the West Coast and beyond. The band's European tours have included dates in Iceland, England, Scotland, Holland, Germany, and Macedonia.

Mick Taylor - Live at 14 Below

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2010
Time: 53:08
Size: 121,9 MB
Label: Shattered Music/Pilot
Styles: Blues/Blues Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Sweet Home Chicago -  5:25
 2. Coastin’ Home -  5:10
 3. I Wonder Why -  9:19
 4. You Gotta Move -  8:26
 5. You Shook Me - 13:02
 6. Cant You Hear Me Knockin’? - 11:43

Although the vast majority of Rolling Stones songs from the Mick Taylor era sported Jagger/Richard writing credits, there's no denying that Taylor provided an extra creative spark for the band -- as the Stones never truly scaled the same heights as Sticky Fingers or Exile on Main St. again. And the same (albeit less surprisingly) could be said for Taylor after he went his merry way from Stones land. But Taylor remains one heck of a blues-rock guitar player to this day, as evidenced by 2003's 14 Below. Originally issued in 1995 as Live at 14 Below: Coastin' Home, the re-release features the same exact track listing but a different album cover. No matter. Taylor's playing is still exceptional, especially on readings of the Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" and Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me" (both of which are ten-minute-plus jam fests). If you've lost track of Taylor since the early '70s, 14 Below will prove that arguably the finest lead guitarist to pass through the Stones' ranks has still got what it takes.

16. My Last Letter - 3:58

Good, hard-rocking Louisiana blues with just a tinge of swamp from "Rockin'" Tabby Thomas. What he lacks in vocal range, he compensates for with exuberance. The backing band is no all-star unit, but they provide some solid grooves behind Thomas' surging leads.
