Josh Hyde - The Call of the Night

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2017
Time: 31:38
Size: 73,1 MB
Label: Self Released
Styles: Blues/Funky Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. The Call of the Night - 3:04
 2. The Truth - 4:08
 3. Close - 3:17
 4. Offshore - 4:13
 5. It's Not Too Late - 3:02
 6. Need a Lill More - 3:07
 7. Guitar in Hand - 3:23
 8. Mississippi Bridge - 3:34
 9. I've Got This Song - 3:47

Josh Hyde is a native of Louisiana and offers up here 9 original tunes that are filled with  his Cajun and Zydeco influenced vocals and guitar.  His band included Joe V. McMahan on guitar (who also produced the CD), Ron Eoff on bass, Jamey Bell on drums, Bryan Owings on percussion and John Gross on keys.  Several guest artists including Sonny Landreth join in for a few songs and are noted below.
The title song “The Call of the Night” has an Allman Brothers Band sort of ring to it.  Slick Southern rock mixed with cajun and blues is what we have here.  “The Truth” follows with guitar and organ howling a bit along with the vocals in a New Orleans sort of manner.  “Close” is next, a country ballad of sorts where Hyde uses his vocal style to make an impassioned plea.  Buddy Flett is on guitar with the band for “Close.”  Sonny Landreth joins in on guitar for “Offshore,” a cut with a haunting and swampy sound that very much is in the Sonny Landreth style.  Landreth is also on the next tune, “It’s Not Too Late.” Tony Daigle also fills in on acoustic guitar and James Westfall is on keys.  The song builds from the acoustic guitar and vocals with the slide added and an overall increase in intensity and then Daigle takes us out on a soft note.
“Need A Lil More” is a “down in the bayou” sounding sort of tune with pensive guitar work and organ layered on the vocals to good effect.  Hyde follows with “Guitar in Hand,” a pensive and thoughtful piece with a long, pungent yet sultry guitar solo.  Next we have “Mississippi Bridge” where Flett accompanies on guitar and Laura Mayo does backing vocals.  A mid-tempo cut, it guilds a bit with nice guitar work and the keys behind the entire song for effect.  The album concludes with “I’ve Got This Song” where Westfall is back on keys in support.
The album is mostly sultry and low to mid tempo.  It spins an intricate web of swampy sounds that are cool and interesting.  The vocals are haunting and ethereal, also quite interesting.  It is a modern sort of bayou music that blends blues, Cajun, Zydeco and some Southern rock into an intricate sound.  It’s not mainstream stuff but it’s cool and a nice change of pace to listen to.  Certainly not straight ahead blues but it’s fun and, as I noted, very interesting and intriguing music.

Bill Johnson is on the move with his 2nd cd release " The Bill Johnson Blues Band 'LIVE' ". His first cd "Why I Sing the Blues", is a collaboration between Bill and top US and Canadian poets.
Debuting to sold out shows in Vancouver and Victoria, Bill is beginning to be seen by a wider audience. When the first version of his band debuted, Victoria's Times-Colonist dubbed him "Victoria's Guitar Flame Thrower" after his performance at the International Jazz Festival. The title has stuck even though Johnson's style has matured. While his contemporaries have pursued FM rock's version of the blues, Bill's style is more that of yesteryear, citing his influences as Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, Eric Clapton, and BB King.
Previously Bill Johnson has been heard with Vancouver Island's Auntie Kate on her debut CD, and then again on a collaborative blues CD featuring Bill. In 1998 Bill teamed up with Grammy Award Winning Texas Bluesman Don Johnson for the CD "Donald Ray". Songs from that CD are currently play-listed on cable's Galaxy Networks blues channels, and on CBC radio, as well as some US stations.
Bill is very proud of his band. Featuring the multi-talented Gary Preston on harp, piano, and voice, Rick Erickson on acoustic/electric bass, and Paul Nixon on drums. The versatility of this band is amazing and sure to please blues fans everywhere.

The blues may be one of the very few musical genres where revivalism -- thanks to the slow pace of change -- was never really necessary. While certain forms, like acoustic blues, have come and gone, electric blues have never really been out of style since Muddy Waters' time. Better yet, a listener could have fallen asleep for 50 or 60 years after listening to Waters and still be able to "get" most of the blues scene. Big Pete Pearson isn't so much a revivalist on I'm Here Baby, then, as he is a traditionalist, drawing on a wide array of familiar blues styles. But while Pearson's approach might be called tried and true, he nonetheless gains the listener's attention by delivering songs like "Worried About My Baby" and "Too Many Drivers" with persuasive energy and soulfully gruff vocals. The backing band, including a guest list big enough for a blues festival, matches Pearson's energy, building an electric, guitar-driven sound that easily shifts arrangements to fit each song. One might imagine -- as wonderful as this all sounds -- that it wouldn't hurt blues traditionalists to read at least one Gloria Steinem book, though it's unclear what a feminist version of "Big Leg Woman" might sound like. If one can overlook lyrics about fishing poles and women jockeys who like to ride all the time, he or she will find I'm Here Baby a passionate recording.

Mason Ruffner’s musical roots begin in the late 1960’s when the Fort Worth, Texas native heard the supernatural guitar prowess of Jimi Hendrix and the lyrical genius of Bob Dylan. Mason’s lineage can be traced to modern rock back to its post-war origins, digging the sounds of Jimmy Reed, BB King and Robert Johnson.  In his early career, Mason tried modern rock and folk music but the blues would not let go.  Robert Ealey, noted blues singer from Fort Worth, invited Mason to the house band, The Five Careless Lovers, at Fort Worth’s now legendary Bluebird Lounge.  What follows is Mason’s formative period as a guitarist and stage performer.
Mason left Fort Worth and contributed to the music scenes in California and New York before finding himself in New Orleans in the late 1970’s.  New Orleans proves to be a rich environment for Mason.  After a few years of playing in bands on Bourbon Street, Mason decided to find his own voice and started his own band, The Blues Rockers.  The band had a steady performance calendar at Club 544 and played more than 200 live shows each year.  The Blues Rockers became one of the most popular bands in the Crescent City and backed blues legends, Lightin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Memphis Slim and many more.  In his audience, you could find Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, and ZZ Top who dropped in to listen or sit in with Mason.  Mason can be found in performances or recordings with Bob Dylan and Daniel Lanois and has toured with U2, Jimmy Page, Ringer Starr, Crosby, Stills and Nash.  Carlos Santana has performed Mason’s composition “Angel Love” and included Mason as a guest guitarist at several of his concerts. From an interview with Santana, he quotes, “Angel Love” is mainly a Santana song-even though it’s written by my great friend Mason Ruffner.  He’s from New Orleans and I think he gives it that real New Orleans feel.  It’s got the great jukebox feeling of real American roots rock.  It’s a perfect jukebox single.”
Another famous artists, Bob Dylan writes from “Chronicles Vol. 1”,  “Fort Worth guitarist and singer Mason Ruffner played in Bourbon Street clubs like the Old Absinthe Bar.  He was a regional star, had a high pompadour, a gold tooth smile with a tiny guitar inlaid.  He had a few records out and some explosive licks with funky edges, rockabilly tremolo-influenced, wrote songs, too, said that he’d hung around libraries reading Rimbaud and Baudelaire to get his language down.  He also told me that as a teenager he had played with Memphis Slim.  I thought I had something in common with him there.  I’d played with Big Joe Williams when I was coming up.  Mason had some fine songs.  One of them had the line, “You do good things for people and it just makes them bad”.  I would have thought about recording it if I didn’t have my own originals.”
Mason has released six recordings.  Rolling Stone Magazine and major press around the world have praised his music.  “Gypsy Blood” the title song from one of his recordings was a top 10 album radio hit in the summer of 1987 and was featured in the hit film, “Steel Magnolias”.  Ruffner has earned the respect of many of the world’s best musicians and serious fans.  Mason continues in his dedication to delivering his provocative lyrics with great music and is second to none at guitar instrumentals.

From the day he conceived the project to the moment he counted off the first song in the studio, he had a bolder plan for this release.  Trout shares. "I'm riding in my car sometimes, and I've got a blues station on – and here's another band doing Got My Mojo Workin'. And there's a little voice in me that says, 'Does The World need another version of that song?' So I came up with an idea. I didn't want to do 'Stormy Monday' or 'Messin' With The Kid.' I didn't want to do the Blues greatest hits. I wanted to do old, obscure songs that have hardly been covered. And that's how Survivor Blues started...”

Mason Ruffner - Mason Ruffner

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 1985
Time: 37:27
Size: 85,9 MB
Label: CBS Records

Art: Front

Tracks Listing:

 9. Lay It on Me - 3:23
10. Serenata - 4:03

Rick Derringer produced the self-titled 1985 album by Mason Ruffner on CBSAssociated Labels and beautifully captured the raw sound with a professional slickness that doesn't get in the way. The streetsmart singer/songwriter composes nine of the ten tracks here, including the beautiful instrumental "Serenata," something strikingly different from the bluesy tone of the rest of the disc and one of the project's highlights. He's got the George Thorogood growl with a bit more of a pop/rock edge, and a cover-boy photo that makes him look like he's going for Rick Springfield's audience. Looks can be deceiving. The Georgia Satellites is more like it, though this is when the Satellites were "making waves," a year before their Elektra major-label debut. Jeff Healy also broke out shortly after this release, just as it was all coming back into vogue, thanks given often to the 1983 Texas Flood album from Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble. But keep in mind that it was Thorogood who actually opened the floodgates, Stevie Ray Vaughan giving the genre popularity and Mason Ruffner aiding and abetting the cause. Recorded in Louisiana and New York, you'd never guess Derringer is on bacground vocals, synthesizers, bass, and guitar. The producer stays out of the spotlight embellishing this solid effort. "Down to New Orleans" best displays the blues these cats churn out condensed into a pop format. The cover of Clarence Garlow's "Bon Ton Roule" adds a different dimension to the proceedings, but not as extreme as "Serenata," which not only breaks out of the album's style, it shimmers in an extraordinary way and is the true gem here.

The good news is that the daughter of renowned 60s R’n’B singer Robert Higginbotham has just released her 6th album. What? You’ve never heard of him or her? Well, Regina B Higginbotham is better known as Teeny Tucker, and her father was the redoubtable Tommy Tucker of Hi-Heel Sneakers fame. But then she hasn’t and certainly doesn’t need to ride on any coat-tails, Teeny is a blues singer of power and soul, and can put more emotion into a single note than some do in a lifetime. I won’t detail her history here as the wonderful Lori Graboyes (“One To One Blues Woman”) is interviewing her elsewhere on Bluesdoodles and does a much better job than I can here.
This latest album, Put On Your Red Dress Baby; those words may sound familiar as they are taken from Tommy’s aforementioned hit. Her cover of that classic, in this new guise, is also the centrepiece of this album.
It opens with Church House Prayer and introduces us to the excellent guitar playing of Robert Hughes as he cleverly builds to the riff. Teeny then begins to display why she deserves more recognition as she delivers a vocal of depth and a clear diction bereft of the histrionics beloved by some. A short harp and guitar solo add colour to a blues shuffle of quality. Love Don’t Hurt is a slightly faster shuffle with more masterful guitar and a strong vocal performance as Teeny incorporates references to the modern curse (social media) into the lyrics. Learn How To Love Me has a slow blues intro with such passion, helped by the gospel feel from the backing vocals. It develops into a faster R’nB style with more tasteful guitar and the B3 warming it all up and backed by a simply superb bass line. Up next is I Sing The Blues (probably best known from the Etta James version but also known as I’ll Sing The Blues For You which has been covered by many…my favourite is the Moody/Marsden version off Ozone Friendly). Here, it transforms into a grittier version with the riff taking due prominence and Teeny doing a fine job with power and grit to match the guitar. Heart, Mind And Soul is everything that is good with modern blues…a slow heart-wrenching vocal backed with intuitive guitar and bass with an untypical drum pattern completing the set. The guitar on this is stunning in its effortless reflection of the vocal and the emotion therein. Blind Lemon Jefferson gets the Tucker/Hughes treatment on One Kind Favour. Already a fabulous, atmospheric song (also recorded by many, sometimes as See That My Grave Is Kept Clean…in fact Glenn Hughes delivers his finest performance ever on a cover of this song from Stuart Smith’s solo album, Heaven and Earth), Teeny takes it to a different dimension with a positive sounding timbre and light guitar work from Hughes of the Robert variety…love it! Next up is the interpretation of her Dad’s big hit. Put On Your Red Dress Baby takes Hi-Heel Sneakers and updates it without taking an iota of the R’n’B energy and fun from it and Teeny cleverly adds to the lyrics to acknowledge the original’s inclusion into the Hall of Fame. The guitar helps with the empathetic tones and picking but is gloriously extended into a lovely solo. Don’t Look Back (in the Rear View Mirror) has a rolling backing reminiscent of Baby Please Don’t Go, but the piano and guitar are so different and, after Teeny says “go Bobby” he most certainly does and again adds so much to the passion of the song. Crack The Door slows the pace with a soulful blues of guitar over B3 and the vocal powerful as ever. Best of the bunch for me is the guitar driven track, From The Skies, where Hughes seems to reference and pay tribute to BB King and Hendrix, particularly toward the end. The vocal is nicely restrained and full of feeling as the B3, bass and drums show suitable restraint. Jump Back is indeed a jumping blues number bringing the Stones to mind in its structure. It’s a fun three minutes but the weakest of the album. It all closes with two versions of the Etta James classic I’d Rather Go Blind. The short version is just an edited version of the long version that, at just over eight minutes might put off some radio stations. Anyone brave enough to take on such a seminal piece is valiant indeed and, in this case, hugely successful in at least equalling Etta’s original performance. It actually tips the scales for me due to the imaginative guitar backing and soloing.
This album shows a vocalist who can display complete control of a voice that can go effortlessly from a whisper to an anguishing cry. She has ensured a band of quality is there to match the vocal input and together they have produced an excellent soulful blues album that will be getting repeated listens from me.

An album destined to go down in history as a classic example of modern day blues. This all new/original studio album that ranges from blistering guitar solos, heartfelt lyrics, to emotional vocals is a must have for any blues, rock or guitar lover!
This album has been a long time coming. Wanting to deliver a more straight ahead blues based album, Ryan McGarvey was joined in the studio by legendary bassist Carmine Rojas (David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Joe Bonamassa, etc) drummer Logan Miles Nix (John 5), and ace keys player Brant Leeper (Coco Montoya, WC Clark, etc) to give what was to become a collection of "Heavy Hearted" all original songs. Still incorporating influences of modern rock, and more- This blues based album comes across almost as a front to finish representation of how the many shades, and styles of the blues has always influenced Ryan's music, and songwriting. Longtime favorites such as "Ain't Enough Whiskey", "Houston", and "Who Would've Thought" present themselves as strongly built songs that have long been requested by fans worldwide. Where as brand new songs such as "Right Side Of The Dirt", and "A Walk In The Rain" have already been proven to be new fan favorites! This album truly showcases the versatility of McGarvey's musicianship. From the guitar playing, to the matured vocals, to the overall songwriting. This is definitely an album that has been a long time coming, but been well worth the wait!

Harmonica virtuoso John O Leary is one of the legends of British blues, and in a career spanning forty years was a founder member of the Savoy Brown Blues Band, who turned British blues into a US stadium rock attraction, as well as playing with the John Dummer Blues Band, Mainsqueeze and a host of touring American bluesmen. For the last decade he has assembled line-ups of the best contemporary blues musicians for his extensive live work and recording and is a fixture at European blues festivals. This 2-CD set comprises the 2004 studio album Sins , previously privately released by John, and a previously unreleased live album recorded at Mr. Kyps club in Poole, Dorset.
O'Leary was simply superb. Bearing down on the reeds with such powerful, precise tone on numbers such as 'Snatch It Back & Hold It' and 'Checking On My Baby', he lifted the performance to a higher level every time he took to the stage... --The Times

New York State band Waydown Wailers are set to release their third album, Backland Blues. They like to call their music ‘Outlaw Jam’, which sounds more like a new variety of Robertsons than the mix of blues, country, pop and, yes, the Grateful Dead approach to guitar structures and soloing they actually convey. What cannot be denied is their ability to fuse these genres into an enjoyable offering that sees them deliver eight original compositions and three covers… a classic Elmore James, a similarly classic Byrds and a surprising version of a Larry Williams hit.
It all starts with a 12-bar blues, fresh from a raucous roadhouse. Back Door Woman Blues doesn’t surprise, but it is a well-crafted rendering of a classic style. The guitars are backed by the Professor on piano and they make a great noise together: the solo follows classic patterns too, but it still ticks all the boxes. I Want Your Soul has an interesting intro as Christian utilizes a B-bender on his guitar. This is a device attached to the guitar that, via a lever, can ‘bend’ the string (usually the B string) by up to a minor 1/3rd. It makes it sound like a pedal-steel slide and gives a lovely tone to all that follows. The solo is neat too as it expands over a great drum pattern. Elmore James’ Done Somebody Wrong gets the full slide treatment as befits a master of the bottleneck. This is well executed and flies across an almost jungle drum sound which takes it away from the original while maintaining credibility. A really strong interpretation of a true classic. Another Bump in the Road sees the band summon up their country influences backed again by Professor Louie on piano. This rolls along at a good pace and benefits from a very Doors like guitar solo. Their jam claims are justified on No Mercy, as the Dead references abound throughout the funky treat which has a great riff and a clever slide/picked duet in the middle: then add a layer of glorious keys from the Prof. and this is clearly the best of a good bunch. The surprise cover comes next… written by Larry Williams in 1958 but probably made most famous by four blokes from Liverpool. Dizzy Miss Lizzy almost works: it is still an enjoyable chunk of rock ‘n’ roll but, for me, it somehow jars with the rest of the album and, when your mind can’t get past Lennon and Harrison it is difficult to appreciate fully. That is forgotten as we get back into a country vein again. Every Passing Mile has twin guitars and vocal harmonies that give this a slightly aggressive feel, rather than the usual country droll and roll, and it’s all the better for that! Back to the Dead allusions on Somewhere in the Middle as we get the rock/country/folk blend they were masters of. Here the folk gives way to rock for the jam feel of the soloing on the outro, with a captivating keyboard…if you listen closely. There is a distinct Dylan feel to the storytelling and the intonation. I’m On the Hunt takes us, happily, into blues with a rock edge. Played in a minor key beloved of many bluesmen, this one works a treat. In fact, it is so familiar, I can hear Alice Cooper’s Blue Turk crossed with his Is It My Body… it is still damn good. The next track, State Of the Union, is a ‘remix’ of the song from their debut album and is a comment on err, the state of the union. It comes across as a bit reggae (the Wailers part perhaps?). It has a hint of CCR or the Outlaws on top of that reggae backing. It does work courtesy of a thoughtful solo but isn’t my favourite. Final track is a cover of The Byrds’ Lover of the Bayou… here it sounds as if Dylan and Knopfler were fronting the band, but the Waydown Wailers do it more than justice. The Hammond solo is a gem too from the venerable Professor Louie.

The 4th Cagle & Nash produced release - Red Herring Redux - is a Solo effort by Greg Cagle. Cagle & Nash take the songs on this project to a different place more on the blues, blues rock and alt rock vein.
This is the fourth production project for Charlotte, NC songwriter/producer duo Cagle & Nash Greg Cagle and Rick Nash both grew up in the town of Concord back when it was hip to listen to cats like James Brown and Otis Reading and Wilson Picket. They actually crossed paths for the first time at the young ages of 15 &16 respectively. Back then they called them “basement” bands. Doug & the Soul Review, the Tamrons, Then there were the serious bands like Sugarcreek where both Greg & Rick worked on a couple of different occasions. Sometime along the way Cagle lured Nash to UNC-Charlotte where Cagle went for Theater stuff and Nash was chasing that Music Composition dream
Cagle continued to build his catalog of original material and honing his composing and arranging skills while Nash went on to study studio recording and production under non other than Mark Williams, Engineer on projects of R.E.M, Don Dixon, James Brown fame while pursuing his day gig as Marketing Manager for a B2B manufacturer in the Charlotte area. Cagle and Nash still kept in touch on a close friendship level but were not afforded the opportunity to write and record together again until . . .
Fast-forward to Late December 2007 they got together again to to write and record. In 2009 the first Cagle & Nash titled CD - Soul Complete was released. Two years later this prolific duo is on their fourth release with Red Herring Redux and already have two other projects in the works.

The blues is to be found wherever one goes; not the “state” of the blues, but blues music specifically. In every town regardless of size, there are guitarists playing the blues. Sometimes they make a living at it, but, more often, they could be but chose to keep their hand in while getting on with avoiding the state of the blues, or, to be more specific, making a living and raising a family. And it’s no surprise that among those are many whose abilities are such that they could have made a living, of sorts, as a player, singer and writer, but were not in a position to let life’s responsibilities slide while they played their slide.
London, Ontario, a medium sized city in Canada just may have more blues guitarists per capita than any other municipality above the 49th parallel, and Larry Benoit is recognized as one of the very best of them.
Benoit is one of those who took his responsibilities to his family seriously, and he accepted the role that life had handed him. Yet, he never stopped playing, but also never found the time to put his music down on an album until now.
Titled I’m Your Man, Benoit's CD differs from many of its type simply by presenting original material over the standard blues covers one can find on albums by too many others. All but two of the songs are his own, and all are equal to any other new blues you’re likely to hear this year.
Benoit's talents as a guitarist and singer are, naturally, featured throughout but as proof of the respect due him, his support musicians are all among the very best.
Doug Varty, Jim Corbett and Ed Pranskus are all members of the Jack Richardson London Music Hall of Fame, after a lifetime spent by each making a living from music alone. Others who came out to play with national reputations included Maple Blues Award honouree Chris Murphy; Randy Bachman’s drummer Dale Ann Brendon; nationally respected keys player Lance Anderson and drummer Ted Peacock, and on.
Benoit produced the album himself, with engineering help from Darren Morrison
(Bill Durst’s producer) and Kyle Ashbourne, along with Juno winning producer Dan Brodbeck looking after the mastering of the finished product.
This album is, in fact, not just another disc to be used to get more gigs in more bars. Instead, it is a fine piece of work, guaranteed to please all fans of fine blues music anywhere, and highly likely to make Larry Benoit’s name known well beyond the 519 Area Code, all things being equal. Watch for him on a stage in your town soon.

12. Johnson's Blues - 2:04
13. True Love - 3:46
14. Mean Streets - 6:34
15. Sweet Darlin' - 3:24

Music genre includes Blues, Rock and Country with a touch of Jazz. Strong lyrics complemented by innovative lead guitar, piano and a five piece band.
Archie Clark was born on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island and raised in the legendary coal-mining town of Blackball. He started his musical apprenticeship there, playing on the West Coast with his first band The Blackball Shufflers before moving with his young family to Christchurch to follow music full-time and tour the South Island with blues-rockers The Wrongway Corrigan Band.
Archie continued to play in bands around the Christchurch and the mid-Canterbury area during the 1980s in bands including Streetlife, Stop that Train, Naked by Mistake and Rio & the Hurricane Horn Section. He was also writing songs, but a growing family and a developing career in the telecommunications industry required a move to Wellington and meant that music took a back seat for the next 15 years. A move to Tauranga in The Bay of Plenty in 2005 reignited the flame.
The fifteen tracks on this album are for the most part true stories, half of them written in recent years while travelling through China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and India, including the title track “50 Days In Asia”. Other songs, such as the iconic blues stomp “Elephant Blues”, date back to those early Christchurch days. Musically the album's vibe is that of accessible mainstream rock with a solid dose of blues and a scattering of country and jazz.
Recorded at Boatshed Studio in Tauranga, in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, 50 Days In Asia features some of the Bay's premier players and was produced by The Boatshed's Nigel Masters, noted for albums he has made with Shona Laing, Jan Preston, Kokomo, Brilleaux and many other top New Zealand acts.

New rock and roll from America's sacred blues and roots traditions/
I wanted to do a project that honored America’s “sacred roots”/”sacred blues” tradition. On “Myth and Truth,” I marshaled the talents of a dozen or so Chicago-area musicians, styled as the David Danced Collective, to cover songs from that unique canon – or songs derived from or connected to that tradition – and added a couple of my own compositions. I gave them a rock update, with musical elements ranging from country honky-tonk, deep swampy blues, jazz funk, psychedelic rock, even some hip-hop… and an acoustic track made thoroughly and quirkily tasty by a closing clarinet solo and a suitcase harmophone.
We recorded, engineered and mastered the work at Chicago’s Rax Trax studios, with Noam Wallenberg (Alan Parsons, NEEDTOBREATHE, Dee Snider, Bun E. Carlos) as producer. Many of the musicians are veterans of the Chicago independent music scene, delivering first-rate session work to the project. They include frequent Chicago Bluesfest artist Jamiah Rogers; guitarist/keyboardist Packy Lundholm of I Fight Dragons; vocalists Jennifer Hall and CHAR of the popular Steely Dan cover band Deacon Blues; area rapper Melo Tripp, and veteran drummer Larry Beers.

Well, Rob Chapman has stepped up the audio and video quality to a whole new level.
The hammy acting in the video aside (at this level he needs a screenwriter and director), the production is right up with "pro" stuff and he's clearly targeting the big money pool of the US by reinventing himself into a more mainstream dirty blues rock vibe as opposed to the metalhead, T-shirt wearing, short wearing dude niche he has inhabited to date.

For singer-songwriter and Nimmo Brothers cofront man Stevie Nimmo, song writing isn't something that you plan; it's something that you need to do. Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland there was always music around as Stevie was growing up. After honing his skills with local bands, Stevie and Brother Alan formed The Nimmo Brothers. The Nimmo Brothers have toured all over the UK, Europe and America for over 15 years, with five successful electric and acoustic CDs to their name. Following a diagnosis of cancer Stevie, now living in France, was forced in 2009 to ease back on his touring schedule with The Nimmo Brothers and spend some months in recovery after a major operation. During this period, focusing on the style of music Stevie listens to 'off the park', he wrote most of the songs that now make up The Wynds of Life.

"When it comes to the blues, Mike Griffin is the real deal. Lots of players claim to be blues musicians, but all it takes is one listen to realize that Griffin not only plays the blues - he LIVES the blues. From his smoky, soulful vocals to his stinging, singing guitar playing, Griffin makes music that penetrates right to the bone with emotion that you can feel as well as hear. It's a sensation that will chill you, thrill you, and full-fill you."
Sittin' Here With Nothing is Griffin's third Waldoxy release, and as the saying goes, "The third times the charm." Recorded at Alabama's legendary Muscle Shoals Sound studio, the album captures Griffin and the band at their best - relaxed, upbeat and burning. Griffin's guitar solos talk as if they were directly linked to his powerful, gruff singing. When it comes to the blues, he can play it all whether it's uptown and jazzy or lowdown and rockin'. For a taste of his versatility, check out his funky rhythm work on "The Last Thing I Need" his melodic, sophisticated solos on "He Can't Do It" and his gritty slide on the album's title track.
Griffin's stellar backup band adds just the right amount of spice and substance to the music. From his gospel-inspired piano licks to his fat, Staxlike organ rhythms, Clayton Ivey turns in a smoking keyboard performance, which is highlighted by his solos on several cuts. Bassist David Hood and drummer Pat O'Connor provide a swinging grooving backbone that propels the songs like a '50 Mercury running on rocket fuel. You'd be hard pressed to find a better horn section than Terry Townsend (trumpet) and Dennis Taylor (sax), whose lively accompaniment adorns several songs with the potent punch of a heavyweight champion. Add guest drummer/percussionist Paul H. Lee and you've got a surefire recipe for 100% blues satisfaction". Chris Gill, Associate Editor, Guitar Player magazine

Mike Zito - Blue Room

It’s back. The debut album that blew up the ’90s blues scene. The songs that announced the touchdown of a major new talent. In modern times, as an established solo star and former member of the globally acclaimed Royal Southern Brotherhood, Mike Zito’s reputation precedes him. But turn back the clocks. Rewind the film reels. Slip through the wormhole to 1998, when a 27-year-old punk kid took his first shot in the studio. “Blue Room,” he reflects, “is the beginning of me becoming an artist.”
By 1998, Zito had been around the block. Raised at the sharp end in St. Louis, Missouri, he’d witnessed the lean years of the ’70s, as his father – a union employee at the local Anheuser-Busch brewery – grafted to support five kids in a cramped apartment. Music was a way out, with Zito learning his craft at a downtown guitar store, then seizing any live work that fell his way. As he told the Blues Mag: “I’ve played with country bands, dance bands, rock bands, alternative bands…”
Blue Room was the moment of clarity, when Zito realised he was burning to be more than a roadhouse-filling covers band. In 1997, he assembled a dedicated lineup and announced his new mission statement: original songs written from the heart. But artistic integrity didn’t come cheap. With just $1000 for studio bills, Zito knew he had one shot. “I have many great memories of the Blue Room sessions,” he says. “It was recorded in the basement of a house outside of St. Louis. We recorded the whole album in one day and all the tracks are live with no overdubs – except the vocals. We had played the night before until 6am at an all-night club in St. Louis and went to the studio at 9am. We brought beer with us and basically did not sleep.”
Play Blue Room today and you can still feel the urgency flood through the speakers. The scratchy funk-blues of Hollywood sets a breakneck pace. Pull The Trigger has an irresistible stop-start lick that underpins Zito’s ragged vocal. It’s All Good pairs a muscular lick with a virtuoso solo. Gravy Jam andSoundcheck are chop-flexing instrumentals, while Lovering is a slow-blues pulsing with potency.
Elsewhere, Shoes Blues is a rampant good-time anthem, offset by Ways About You’s jazzy shuffle and the glassy funk of Lightning Bug. Finally, there’s a wah-soaked cover of Elton John’s Rocket Man, closing a tracklisting that offers a signpost to the artist Zito would become. “The singing is sometimes not quite there,” he considers, “and the guitar playing is so over the top. But it’s full of honesty.”
Likewise, while Zito’s later albums would find him drilling deeper as a lyricist –to examine themes from mortality to sobriety – this opening gambit captures the worldview of a young man enjoying primal pleasures. “The vibe of Blue Room is total bravado,” he reflects. “I was so full of myself back then, and mostly the songs were about partying and sex. I was 27 years old and trying to be a rock star.”
Blue Room changed everything. As the album sold, the songs began to be requested live – displacing the Cream and Hendrix covers – and Zito was heralded as an artist of rare potential. Back then, he didn’t anticipate the bitter-sweet future about to unfold – the lost years of alcoholism in the post-millennium, the salvation offered by his wife, Laura, the plaudits of Royal Southern Brotherhood in 2012 and the rising trajectory of his solo career since he picked it back up with 2015’s Keep Coming Back. But when Zito looks back now at Blue Room, he wouldn’t change a thing: “I find such joy in listening to the young man on this recording. I’m so proud that it’s finally being released by Ruf Records after twenty years…”

Afrissippi - Fulani Journey

 1. Ngol Jimol - 4:45

 3. Bafal - 5:22
 4. Ayo Leele - 4:31

 7. Njulli / Fulani Journey feat. John Sinclair - 9:17
 8. Bambangel - 6:10
 9. Nawle - 1:45

Senegalese guitarist moves to Oxford town, joins Kimbrough-Burnside crew, shows Ali Farka TourA© who can play the blues ("Dono," "Ngol Jimol").
Mississippi blues and West African music continue to be fascinated by each other, and their latest reunion is a particularly potent one. Senegalese griot (and Mississippi transplant) Guelel Kumba sings in Fulani while bluesmen from R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough's bands shake Mississippi mud from their guitars. The guttural loneliness of the blues seems to find redemption in Kumba's joyous sound, and vice versa. Check out John Sinclair's cameo on "Njulli/Fulani Journey": he (perhaps unintentionally) impersonates an inebriated Tom Brokaw as he details the history of the Fulani people.

Roy Rogers & Norton Buffalo - Roots Of Our Nature

 1. Don't Throw Your Changes On Me - 3:49
 2. All I Want - 3:41
 3. Under The Rug - 3:23
 4. Requiem - 4:11

10. Deny And Down The Distance - 5:16
11. Seven Hearts - 6:23
12. Highway Bound - 4:23
13. Happy Go Lucky - 2:49

In an intimate acoustic setting, Norton Buffalo and Roy Rogers present a set of original tunes whose flavor suggests roots much further back in time. Aside from a few tasteful string parts, Roots is all about crisp finger-picked and slide guitar, Buffalo's earthy and expressive harmonica, and each artist's agreeably unpolished vocals. Their lyrics embrace traditional imagery, from saloon balladry to ramblin' songs. On "Trinity" the words sustain an especially rustic eloquence through multiple verses dedicated to visions of salvation. If retro affectation bothers you, it's best to imagine this session transpiring on some snowy night, within the glow of an iron stove at some crossroads general store. When heard on these terms, Roots can cast a spell to remember.
As quintessentially American as corn on the cob or the rodeo, the blues-streaked music created here by slide guitarist Roy Rogers and harmonica player Norton Buffalo marks their first studio collaboration since two early-'90s releases. Buffalo, a longtime Steve Miller Band member, and Rogers, who has played with Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker, are so musically in synch that all 13 of their original songs on this CD serve as engaging testimonials to their friendship. Each West Coaster is a virtuoso on his instrument, but neither engages in showiness. Instead, their phrases combine in low-key expressions of faith, longing, struggle, and triumph. Rogers and Norton aren't outstanding singers, yet they get by without disrupting the special guitar-harp rapport at the crux of the music. Buffalo does deliver his all-time best studio vocal on "If I Were a King." --Frank-John Hadley

Nothing Runs Free is a twelve-track concept album that tells the story of The Wanderer, a broken soul from Louisiana looking to find the courage to confront his past and journey back home. Each track on the record draws influences from a different flavor of acoustic music, including the bluegrass-tinged rhythms of "Feet Don't Fail Me Now," the beautiful classical melody of "Annie's Waltz," the low-down bluesy swagger of "Train Came Right on Time," or the New Orleans flavor of "French Quarter Mile." Musicians on the record include Grammy-winning violinist for the Infamous Stringdusters Jeremy Garrett, Grammy-nominated harmonica player Billy Branch, banjoist Wavy Dave of Cornmeal, as well as the amazing musicians that comprise nationally renowned Grateful Dead cover band Terrapin Flyer.
