S.E.Willis (Steve Willis), originally from West Virginia, has been playing the piano and harmonica since the age of six, and organ and accordion since his teens.  He started playing in rock and roll bands along Arizona’s stretch of Route 66 in 1967.  Willis’ music is deeply rooted in traditional American forms: blues, boogie-woogie, country, rockabilly, gospel, zydeco. A veteran band leader, S.E.Willis has taken a supporting role in bands with such artists as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, Albert King, Jimmy Rogers, Roy Gaines, and, since 2000, Elvin Bishop (his accordion features prominently on the 2014 release “Can’t Even Do Wrong Right”). S.E.Willis sang tenor with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and appeared on their 1995 release “We’ve Come a Mighty Long Way.” He worked another three years with founding Meters’ member and New Orleans drumming legend Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste, and plays piano on his solo release Zigaboo.com. Steve “S.E.” Willis is a member of the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame.

The Stevie Zee Band's "Wail" is a must-have for alternative music fans. This first edition CD, released in 1995 under Sandcastle Records. In terms of the content, "Wail" showcases the talent of The Stevie Zee Band with their unique style that defines the 1990s music scene. This album is perfect for those who appreciate good music and want to add a rare gem to their CD collection. There is not one bad track on Wail, to my ears, and it just gets better every time I hear it.
Stevie Zee is one amazing singing, songwriting and guitar playing talent, and this set of songs showcases his skills and lays it all out on the table with a fearless performance. This is the kind of thing you don’t buy and listen to a few times and shelf for a rainy day. It’s massively infectious and even mood friendly. He really is some kind of master who swings between blues, rock, funk and a bit of pop flair and a slight southern feel as well.

This CD review was originally published in the July 21, 2016 edition of Blues Blast Magazine. Multi-instrumentalist and singer Michael Barclay has an extensive history with all kinds of music, having worked as a sideman with artists as diverse as rock pioneer Chuck Berry (back in the 1960s!), jazzman Randy Crawford, and the B-3 master himself, Merl Saunders. Hailing from Northern California, Michael has been steadily churning out self-produced albums that cover a lot of ground, including last year’s very good blue-rock collection, King of Hearts.
Tracks is Barclay’s fifth solo release, and the album is subtitled “A Blues, Funk, and World Music Ride for the Discerning Traveler.” That does a great job summing up what is going on here, as Michael does not confine himself to any one genre, and he generates many different moods and emotions. He did a lot of the heavy lifting on this disc, as he wrote thirteen of the tracks, provided the vocals, and laid down a good portion of the guitar, bass, organ, piano, trumpet, and synthesizer parts. He was joined by Roger Volz on saxophone for a number of the tracks, and a few other guest musicians filled in as needed.Michael leads off this album with “California Burnin’” and this gives the listener an insider’s view of living in brushfire country, one of the perils of the Golden State. This story is set to a 1980s style blues-rock soundtrack complete with very well done clean lead guitar work from Barclay and solid drums from guest artist Tommy Miles. Moving to more a more traditional blues subject is “Is it Him or is it Me,” which is about a man who needs to know where he really stands with his lady. This song uses 1980s synthesizer and vocal sounds that give the feel of the low-key rock that Clapton was doing 30 years ago.
There are a few tracks where the lyrics take a backseat to the music and the words are just used to help cement the message of the song. One example of this is “I’m So Weary” which has the same two lines, “I’m so weary / boy oh don't you know,” set to a smooth Afro Cuban beat. This song uses hand percussion and light-hearted guitar lines from Kendrick Freeman and Andrew Ohren to achieve more of an island sound. Another is “Lucky Streak,” a slow-paced funky rocker with simple instrumentation (bass, guitar, and drums) and a 1980s vibe. Two cover tunes are also included on Tracks, and they are not the usual ones that everybody else seems to redo. There is a dark version of “I’m a Man” from the Spencer Davis Group (remember Steve Winwood?) that is heavy enough that it changes the mood from a proud declaration into a brooding melancholy. Then there is an upbeat instrumental, “Hoodoo Snake Doctor Blues,” that Johnny Shines originally recorded in 1970. Barclay does a fine job with the organ and guitar here, and his soloing has a very natural feel and pace.
As most of the songs are relatively short, Michael found room for four other instrumentals on this disc and these cover a variety of sounds and moods. “Mike’s Blues” has a funky 1970s blues sound with a slick sax lead, and solos that are traded off from Volz’s sax to Barclay’s guitar to Lowell “Banana” Levinger’s organ. Other guest musicians were brought in for this track, including Bill Boggio on guitar, Terry Baker on drums, and Kent Fosgreen on bass. Michael also experiments with the Jamaica sound on “Reggae Man,” a modern tune that uses keyboards to good effect, including a neat steel drum sample. Then there is “Tracks,” a laid-back jazzy blues song that has a smooth guitar lead and a pulsing bass line. And lastly, Michael closes the album out with “F-bomb” a short solo acoustic guitar track that ties everything together as it reminds the listener of what the blues is all about and where it came from. This about covers it for Tracks, and Michael Barclay definitely accomplished his goal of providing entertainment for individuals who like variety in their musical collection. Give it a listen for yourself, and please remember to support local independent musicians, as there is a lot of good stuff to be found out there!

Forged through the extreme highs and lows that come with living, Time Will Tell is the album that Devon Gilfillian has been preparing to make his entire life. His third studio album was formed in Nashville’s legendary RCA Studio A and recorded live to tape on varispeed with mostly single vocal takes. Gilfillian wrote and produced with a mighty team including longtime drummer and friend Jonathan Smalt and Neal H Pogue (Tyler the Creator, OutKast) as executive producer.
Gilfillian carries soul track to track through a sonic journey of rock, funk, and country elements, magnetically vulnerable about his own failure and frailty. No end is ever easy, and what else is there in life than to go through? To get to where we’re going, we’ve got to suffer a little. Time Will Tell is the sound of Gilfillian doing just that while realizing what a blessing it is to be here at all.

Few musicians have remained as true to themselves as Snowy White. Admired for his humility, honesty, and unmistakable guitar tone, he has always focused on the music rather than personal recognition. As one admirer famously said: “He is one of those rare musicians who says, ‘Look how beautiful the music is!’ not, ‘Look how great I am!’”

Musicians:
SaRon Crenshaw - Vocals & Guitar;
Bart Kamp - Bass;
Patrick Cuyvers - Hammond & Piano;
Frank Duindam - Drums.

SaRon Crenshaw was completely unknown to me until videos of a performance in the Netherlands appeared on the internet. It turned out that Bart Kamp had discovered him in New York and brought him to the Netherlands for a few performances and CD recordings. When Bart played with Monti Amundson at Bluesmoose Café, I asked him to bring a copy of ‘Goin’ To Get Deep!’ and bought one. Bart told me that he had recorded the CD independently and that five hundred copies were initially produced. The CD was recorded live at the Berkelse Bluesclub and the sound is excellent.
It has turned out to be a beautiful CD with wonderful ‘old school’ blues. No explosive, hard solos, but lovely bluesy guitar work on which SaRon’s warm, smooth voice thrives perfectly. He is backed by Bart Kamp on bass, Patrick Cuyvers on Hammond and piano, and Frank Duindam on drums. SaRon wrote two songs himself: Guitarman and Tight Cranky And Loose; the other seven are covers. The CD opens with the delightful slow blues *Don’t Roll Your Eyes*, featuring sharp guitar playing, beautiful bass lines, Hammond organ, and tight drumming. The uptempo *The Moon Is Full* has a great rhythm in which bass and drums, combined with the Hammond playing, create a fine groove upon which the funky guitar playing excels. *Lie To Me* has a jazzy touch, and SaRon’s voice fits perfectly—a bit deep, a bit warm. A nice, swinging track. The ballad *Feels Like Rain* is sung very subdued, with a backing choir, and played as befits such a song. Then the funk continues with *Guitar Man*. A funky guitar intro transitions into a top-notch groove in which the organ sets the tone with wonderful interplay with the rhythm section, and where guitar and Hammond engage in a great duel. *44 Blues* features a sharp guitar intro, clapping crowd, and solo vocals before the band joins in—simply wonderful blues. The band is introduced before the song *Old Love*. SaRon’s voice carries this song in an incredibly sensitive way: emotional, sung with restraint and fitting accompaniment. Goosebumps! Feet leave the floor to the funky blues Tight, Cranky & Loose. “Are you ready to party?” asks SaRon before the final song, launching into the well-known Wang Dang Doodle and urging the audience to sing along, which ends in a beautiful solo.
Conclusion:
A wonderful CD featuring delightfully authentic blues work that is rarely heard anymore. It is often blues rock that dominates, which is also wonderful, but this is more the ‘original’ blues. A must-buy for lovers of fine blues!

Okay so i just listened to Live by The Lydia Warren Band, 2005, straight-up blues from chicago, no frills. and honestly? It kinda surprised me. wasn't expecting much, low-key judged the cover-kinda plain, just a blurry photo and some handwritten font. but press play and boom, raw energy hits you right in the chest. lydia's voice? rough in the best way. like she's been singing all night and still ain't tired. it's got that gritty, soulful crack when she belts it out, especially on "You Don't Know" and "Respect Me Baby." man, those tracks slap. the guitar solos are messy in a good way-like they're feeling it, not just playing notes. you can hear the crowd, not too loud, just enough to remind you this is live, real, no studio tricks. "Nobody Likes You" goes on for over six minutes and i didn't even notice the time. just locked in. bassline's thick, drums steady, and lydia's voice cuts through like a knife. love how unhurried it feels. like the band's in no rush, just groovin'. "All Your Love" closes it with nearly ten minutes of pure blues jam-no, it doesn't go anywhere fast, but it doesn't gotta. it vibes. but yeah, not perfect. "Back To Me" feels too short, like they just started and it's already over. left me hanging. and "Antman's Reggae Groove"? reggae in a blues album? weird flex. didn't hate it, but felt outta place, like someone sneezed in the middle of a sermon. not bad, just... huh? also, the recording quality? a bit muddy. nothing ear-ruining, but you can tell it's indie, self-released. mic levels kinda wobble sometimes. still, adds to the charm, i guess. feels more real, less polished to death like some modern stuff. what really got me though? the lack of ego. no flashy solos for solos' sake. no over-the-top drama. just a band playing music like they mean it. you don't hear that much anymore. everyone's trying to impress. these folks just wanna make you feel something. funny thing-i was listening while walking through the park, and this old dude with a cane stopped, looked at me like he could hear it through my headphones, nodded slowly, and said "now that's blues." didn't say another word. walked off. weird? maybe. but also, yeah. that's exactly what it is.

“These songs began as a conversation between a poet and a musician. When the musician said he had never written a song with anyone, the poet went home, wrote a song lyric that evening, his first ever, and sent it to the musician, who spun the words into a song by the next day. The conversations continued, and within a few months the one song had become seven. They wrote in separate rooms, but the result was a collaboration that surprised both of them: the poet who played no instrument beyond the words he wrote down and the musician who took the poet’s words and made them sing.”

13. Love Jones - 3:32
14. High Desert Blues (Here It Is Again) - 2:57
15. I Need That Needle (feat. The Michael Barclay Blues Band) - 3:03

Guitarist Michael Barclay is based in California and has played in the past with Chuck Berry, Randy Crawford, Norton Buffalo and Dorothy Morrison amongst others. On this release Michael played much of the music, adding keys, bass, drum programming, trumpet and trombone to his main instrument. His regular band assists on a few tracks: Gordon Wilson (guitar), Tom Van Rossem (bass), Tommy Miles (drums and sax on one cut). Two other drummers are involved, Terry Baker playing on one track and Kendrick Freeman credited for drum samples on three tracks. Michael wrote most of the material, assisted by associate producer Midge Gannon on two songs, and there are five covers.Michael is clearly a solid guitar player, whether playing a chugging boogie like “High Desert Blues” or SRV-style licks as on opener “Shakey’s Blues”. However, his vocals are less persuasive as he attacks the songs in a strangled, gruff tone which works best on a quieter track like John Mayer’s “Gravity”, less so on the rockers though on “I Need That Needle” his anguished vocal does fit the tale of tragic waste implied by the title.Robben Ford and Michael McDonald wrote “Nothin’ To Nobody” and the slower tune again suits Michael’s voice, as he plays some excellent guitar fills very much in Robben’s style. Michael’s version of Rufus Thomas’ novelty song “Walking The Dog” adds little to the song’s extensive discography but Huey ‘Piano’ Smith’s “Roberta” bounces along well. Michael’s own tunes cover themes from love gone wrong (“You Always Remember Your First Broken Heart”) to attraction (“High Heels Again”). However, one of the problems with drum programming is that the rhythm can sound labored and there are a few examples of that here, such as the cover of King Harvest’s “Dancing In The Moonlight” (a pop hit for Toploader around the Millennium). For this reviewer the instrumental “Southbound” (on which Michael’s band are all present) is the strongest cut here with its twin guitar lead, funky rhythm and hints of Louisiana with sax added to Michael’s horns.

16. One Too Many Mornings - 6:23
17. Highway - 5:07

Though Alice Stuart's first album came out in 1964, at the height of the collegiate folk revival, the singer/songwriter sounds remarkably fresh and engaged on the live two-disc set Live at the Triple Door. Essaying standards like Willie Dixon's "Big Boss Man" and Elmore James' "Hard Time Killin' Floor" and bluesy originals like "The Man's So Good" with the sass of a cocky young girl, Stuart also weaves country and traditional folk influences into her music, plus the obligatory Bob Dylan cover. (This one's a fine, sweet-voiced take on "One Too Many Mornings," an excellent choice.) But through most of this lengthy album, it's her folk-blues side (electric, but without the grit and swagger of the Chicago style) that predominates, making it plain why Stuart is noted as a primary influence on Bonnie Raitt. That Live at the Triple Door sounds more authentically bluesy and vital than anything Raitt has done in over a quarter century is testament to Alice Stuart's talents.  Steel guitar and congas were added for this live show.

That deep musical foundation sparked a lifelong calling that would evolve into a unique voice on stage, over the airwaves, and in the city’s cultural conversations. He began his professional journey through the Blues in the Schools program, performing at the Chicago Blues Festival under the mentorship of Deitra Farr. Over the years, Brother Jacob has become a familiar face on the scene, not just as a guest vocalist or sit-in performer, but as a frontman building a body of work with his own band and his own voice. His music carries a spiritual intensity, rooted in storytelling and tradition, and driven by a mission to connect, uplift, and preserve. 10. Put That Gun Down - 4:41
11. A Crying Shame - 3:48
12. Soul Of The Blues - 6:51
13. Simple Song - 4:55

Bluescats is a blues trio from Germany. The band is known for their collaboration with a wide range of blues artists. In 2023, with singer Tommie Harris, singer Brenda Boykin, and harmonica player Ralf Grottian, they released the album ‘Bring It On Home’, a musical tribute to the legendary bluesman Willie Dixon.
On October 31, 2025, Bluescats performed at Haus Eifgen in Wermelskirchten, North Rhine-Westphalia. The guest singer was Greg Copeland, born in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1954 and living in Hameln, West Germany, for decades. Copeland has long been friends with Jackson Browne, who produced Copeland’s debut album ‘Revenge Will Come’ in 1982. Recordings of the Bluescats and Greg Copeland concert at Haus Eifgen were released last month on the album ‘The Soul Of The Blues’. The title says it all: they were searching for the soul of the blues with their own songs and covers of James Brown, T-Bone Walker, Eric Bibb, Big Joe Williams, and Jerry Beach. In the opening track, the Copeland composition *Brown Eyed Handsome Man*, Greg Copeland's soulful vocals are immediately audible, and the band presents its calling card with the tight rhythm section and the tasty guitar solo. James Brown's *Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag* is dazzling funky soul with raw vocals and fierce (wah-wah) guitar work. In the exciting *I Like The Way*, written by Copeland and Brandt, Jens Filser is once again in fine form with his beautiful guitar playing. Copeland and Brandt also wrote *I Get Lost Sometimes*, a beautiful soul ballad nearly seven minutes long.
The second cover is the classic *Stormy Monday Blues* by T-Bone Walker. A brilliant blues ballad lasting well over seven minutes, impressive vocals, and a famously soloing Filser. Gospel influences can be heard in Eric Bibb’s Don’t Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down. The traditional, best known from Big Joe Williams, is a groovy boogie in which, alongside the rhythm section, Filser once again squeezes everything out of his guitar. The bass tones in the boogie Barbecue Boogie, written by Copeland, are beautiful. I Play The Blues For You by Jerry Beach is a long, brilliant blues ballad with guitarist Filser in top form. The Copeland and Brandt song Put That Gun Down is funky soul with intense vocals by Copeland. The last three songs were written by bassist Till Brandt. The uptempo A Crying Shame features excellent musicianship once again, after which Copeland lets the audience enjoy his soulful vocals in the funky title track Soul Of The Blues. In the closing number, the instrumental Simple Song, the men of Bluescats demonstrate their great class once more.
Conclusion:With the album ‘The Soul Of The Blues’, Bluescats and Greg Copeland have indeed found the soul of the blues and stolen my heart.

Backyard Blues finds Roosevelt Hoover III blending soul, jazz, and funk into a warm, groove-driven album. Rooted in tradition and strong arrangements, it delivers a sincere, polished sound, even if it leans more on familiarity than innovation.
Roosevelt Hoover III grew up surrounded by music, with his father’s band rehearsing in the family living room on weeknights. At just five years old, he asked to learn piano and was told, “If you can whistle it, you can play it.” Taking that advice literally, he began playing by ear — a skill that still shapes his musical style today. He later added trumpet to his repertoire in elementary school and eventually switched to organ when his father did. By junior high, Roosevelt was already performing as the keyboardist for the Top 40 R&B band Shades of Soul, staying busy with live shows throughout high school.
After graduating, Roosevelt served in the U.S. Air Force, stepping away from music for a time. Once back in civilian life, he moved to San Jose and returned to the stage, playing with a variety of bands and collaborating across genres. Along the way, music remained a family affair, with garage-band sessions that eventually included two of his three children. This recording honors some of those moments — music made for the love of playing, connection, and good company.
“I dedicate this CD to my son, every note I play is for you. Love and thanks to my father who inspired me to follow his musical footsteps.
To all the musicians who contributed, I give sincere thanks and respect for helping me realize my dream of recording the music I grew up with and love, your combined musical mastery elevated every song.”

Dutch Tilders (29 August 1941 – 23 April 2011) was a Netherlands-born Australian blues singer-songwriter and guitarist where he was dubbed the “Godfather Of Blues”.  Born Mattheus Frederikus Wilhelmus Tilders in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, Dutch emigrated to Australia with his parents, four brothers and a sister in 1955. At the age of ten, he was a member of a church choir, but by the time he was twelve, his alto voice broke. No more singing for the boy with the baritone voice. When he was thirteen, he joined a boys choir at a secondary school fooling the choir master into believing he was an alto by singing falsetto. He could still produce those high-pitched notes until his final days. His first year in Australia was spent in the Brooklyn Migrant Hostel where his first experience as a performer was in an amateur Black and White Minstrel Show. His very first paid gig, when just fifteen, was at the Collingwood Town Hall where he played the harmonica. On the same bill were Joff Allen and Johnny O’Keefe. Dutch was paid two pounds seven and sixpence, which at the time he was getting for half a weeks wages at Broons timber yard in Brooklyn. It only cost two pounds and sixpence for the taxi home.  He bought his first guitar in 1959 and by 1960 he was playing in the trendy coffee lounges of that time. Making up most of the songs as he went along, he found the blues was exactly the music in which to express his feelings. With no one to teach him, he developed his own style that remains unique to himself. During the mid-to-late 1960s Tilders performed less frequently. In September 1970, Tilders appeared on TV talent show New Faces and was signed by one of the judges, Ron Tudor, to his Bootleg Records label Dutch made his first self-titled album in 1972 and it was released one year later. His collaborators were Brian Cadd, Phil Manning, Barry Sullivan, Barry Harvey, Laurie Prior and Broderick Smith. In 1975 he started recording for an independent label, Eureka and consequently recorded two direct to disc records with greats Jimmy Conway and Kevin Borich. During the seventies, Dutch fronted such Blues and Boogie bands as the Elks, the Cyril ‘B’ Bunter Band and Mickey Finn. In 1980 he formed the ‘R&B Six’, a band that included Charley Elul (drums), Peter Frazer (sax), Suzanne Petersen (flute and vocals), Mick Eliot (guitar) and Dave Murray (bass and vocals). This band toured Australia extensively.
In the meantime, Dutch also worked solo and toured England with John Mayall, Taj Mahal, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Returning to Australia, his next album was a joint work with Margaret Roadnight, Australian Jazz of the 70s Vol. 5 The Blues Singers. Most of his tracks on this album were his own originals. This was followed by Break, recorded with musicians from The Foreday Riders and Company Caine. He went on to release a further 12 LPs and three singles. In 1976, according to legend, B.B. King first heard Dutch from backstage and, from the quality of the performance, expected to see a black bluesman. Brownie and Dutch became best mates simply because Brownie believed that the Dutchman was a genuine bluesman, regardless of his racial origins and for some time did a number of combined tours.
In 1981 Dutch even opened for Billy Connolly! In Australia, he fronted the Cyril B Bunter Band, which has recently re-formed, and also The Elks and Mickey Finn. He played with Jim Conway from Captain Matchbox, Kevin Borich and the Express. He had a long-time backing band, The Blues Club, which included Martin Cooper, Winston Galea, Geoff Achison and Barry Hills. After The Blues Club, he formed The Holey Soles with Ian Clarke, Anthony Harkin and Greg Dodd. In fact, it’s probably easier to list the major Australian blues artists that he hasn’t performed with – and that’s probably because they were still at school!
During the latter days of his life he mainly performed as a solo artist and/or with his last band called The Legends Band, though he did enjoy getting together with Geoff Achison doing amazing duo chops. Ranking among his favourite guitarists were: Geoff Achison, Kevin Borich and the Emmanuel brothers. In his long career, Dutch won numerous awards (most notedly for his performances with his band, ‘The Blues Club’) recognizing his contribution to the Blues Music Scene. In 2010 his manager announced he had been diagnosed with cancer and a benefit concert was held to help with his treatment costs. He retired from performing in January 2011 due to the illness and ongoing treatment.  On 23 April 2011 Matthew “Dutch” Tilders died, aged 69  (Edited from Wikipedia & his own website).

The popular sixtysomething Black American singer Benny Rivers has stories to tell. You can see it in his weathered features on the cover of his debut album Where the Hurt Lives and from song titles: What Pain Has Taught Me, Talking to Your Picture, The Past Still Calls …
The album's You Tube stream says “deeply rooted in emotional storytelling, heavy guitar grooves, and soulful vocal deliveries, Where the Hurt Lives takes you on a journey through heartbreak, resilience, and survival”.
Listeners have identified elements of BB King, classic Stax and Memphis country-soul, peak Motown and Curtis Mayfield in Rivers' sound.
These songs have touched hearts: this single Step by Step in Time has notched up more than three million Spotify plays.
Impressive for a man unknown just two months ago.
And there's a reason: Benny Rivers DOENSN'T EXIST !
Benny, the album, the photo and the Facebook video of him singing What Pain Has Taught Me are
AI CREATIONS!.
He is fake news, a confection of algorithms.
The robots have risen.

Some bands make good music and some have a mission. A band called PTSD does both: they perform music that rocks while, at the same time, heals themselves. They released their first ever studio-recorded album in 2021.
The combined band member’s stories, past and present, are proof that the experience of trauma, no matter how great, can be alleviated—and perhaps even eliminated—by the healing chords of music.
The group, originally the VA Homefront Band, has been popular in the world of Veteran’s Affairs for years. As part of The Creative Arts Therapies Program, which began at the West Haven VA in 1986, the group, under both its original and new name, has won a total of 12 gold, silver and bronze medals. At the prestigious National Creative Arts Competition, they garnered a first place, for their performance of “Let Them In” (https://www.ptsd-band.com/band).

The Name Droppers are a tightly knit quartet of veteran New England musicians who have traveled a long and winding road in shaping their multiple talents into a high-octane blend of blues, R&B, soul, and good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. The group came together in the 1980s as Charlie Karp and the Name Droppers, with the Connecticut-based Karp being a seasoned guitarist, a prolific songwriter, and an Emmy-winning producer. After Karp’s passing in 2019, the remaining Name Droppers stuck together: songwriter/guitarist Rafe Klein; pianist Ron Rifkin; bassist Scott Spray; and drummer Bobby “T” Torello.
Scott Spray was Johnny Winter’s longest-running bass player; his bass work on Winter’s final album, Step Back, earned him a Grammy for Best Blues Album in 2015. Torello was the former drummer for Winter; he has also toured with Michael Bolton, Grace Slick, Black Oak Arkansas, and the Jay Willie Blues Band. Torello was inducted into both the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame and the New England Music Hall of Fame. Rafe Klein is a songwriter and guitarist who played alongside blues legend Karp and co-wrote many of the songs on Karp’s last album, Back to You (Red Parlor Records). He played on all five of the Name Droppers’ previous albums. Ron Rifkin is a keyboard powerhouse who has played on numerous sessions alongside Karp, both live and in the studio. His unique style and distinctive voice put him in high demand as a session player. Gospel singer Simone Brown is the background vocalist on the Name Droppers’ last two albums, 2024’s Starshine and 2025’s Cool Blue Shoes. Special guest Crispin Cioe (the Uptown Horns) plays saxophone on five tracks. Let’s Live Together, the Name Droppers’ sixth recording overall, is an energetic session of smartly crafted originals and creative covers. The album is produced by Vic Steffens. Everything kicks off with guitarist Klein’s whimsical “Grey Haired Blues,” as Klein sings, “Yeah, it’s true my roof is covered in snow, don’t be fooled, there’s a fire below,” with some great piano from Rifkin as he solos. On the topical title track, “Let’s Live Together,” also written and sung by Klein, he chimes, “Lately we’ve seen a lot of sadness in the news, each Monday morning we wake up with the blues, have to find a way where we can do better…let’s live together.” Klein’s soulful vocal partners magically with Cioe’s soaring sax and Brown’s backing vocal. On “Heartbreak City,” written and sung by keyboardist Ron Rifkin, he chants, “Don’t know what you’re looking for, don’t look back, cause it ain’t here no more,” with a guitar solo from Klein. Brown steps into the center-stage spotlight for a smoking reworking of Aretha Franklin’s classic “Chain of Fools,” written by Don Covay and recorded by Aretha in 1967: “For five long years, I thought you were my man, but I found out, I’m just a link in your chain. Chain, chain, chain, chain of fools,” as Spray lays down a strong bassline.
On “Gotta Serve Somebody,” the Bob Dylan classic first recorded in 1979, Klein takes the lead as he cries, “You may be an ambassador to England or France, you may like to gamble, you might like to dance, you may be the heavyweight champion of the world, you may be a socialite with a long string of pearls, but your gonna have to serve somebody…” The song is propelled by Rifkin’s churning Hammond organ, with a backing vocal from Brown.
“Don’t Cry Over Me” was written by Frank Durazzo and first released in 2022. The lead vocal is sung by guitarist Klein, as he belts, “You always wonder how I get along with out you…you see the picture from a different view than me, I see the picture the way my love has to be…don’t cry over me.” Once again, Rifkin is on the B-3 while sharing the backing vocal with Brown, guitarist Tim Dehuff, and saxophonist Cioe.
The band revisits two tracks from their Charlie Karp years: the salaciously sexy “Talk Dirty,” written by Charlie Karp, David Hull, and Arthur Resnick in 1987, as guitarist Klein demands, “hold me tight, talk dirty”; and “Love Lightnin’,” written by Karp, Klein, and Bruce Carter, with the lyric, “Even Lightning love runs thin when the money runs out, they say it don’t strike twice, but I wish it happens to me,” as Rifkin switches between organ and piano.
“Watch Pocket,” written by Torello, features special guest Jay Willie on slide guitar as Torello howls, “Baby since you’ve been gone, there’s a hole in my watch pocket, time keeps slipping away…I’ll get you back some way,” again with Rifkin on piano. The closer is “Mannish Boy,” written by Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield), Elias McDaniel (Bo Diddley), and record producer Mel London. Klein croons, “Everything gonna be alright this morning,” and Richard Hunter is featured on harmonica.
The Name Droppers have given us another great album, Let’s Live Together, as hopefully we “find a way where we can do better.” The Name Droppers seem to have found the way  ~  Richard Ludmerer/
