New Orleans bluesman J. Monque'D knows how to roll with the punches. Send him to prison for stalking his ex-wife and he makes a CD out of it. The title cut, "After the Beep," is a reference to the many messages he left on her answering machine inquiring as to the whereabouts of their daughter. Monque'D is joined by some of New Orleans' top musicians on this recording. Blues diva Marva Wright makes an appearance, along with Earl Turbinton on soprano saxophone, Willie Panker on drums and backup vocals, Jack Carter on bass and backup vocals, Jack Cole on guitar, Tom Worrell on piano and backup vocals, and Michael Ward on piano. Together they create a distinctly New Orleans sound, both lyrically and musically. The characteristic backbeat of the city is in evidence on Panker's drums, while the words of the songs speak to a big easy experience. The opening number is a case in point: Monque'D pays a musical tribute on blues harp to his city's biggest holiday with "Harmoni Gras." This cut, along with many of the other songs penned by Monque'D, are perfect vehicles for a man who is a master of the harmonica. "And Now, Bologna" and "Fiddlin'Women Blues" showcase both the blues harpist's expertise on his instrument and his penchant for humor, which has made him a favorite in clubs and at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Awesome is the only word to adequately describe J. Monque'D's performance on the 12-minute masterpiece "If You See Kay." Ward and Turbinton are standouts on the catchy tune "No Doubt About It." Monque'D and Marva Wright harmonize on the delightful "Indian Princess," another musical allusion to the unique Mardi Gras traditions in the city of New Orleans. After this beep, the message is all good music.
