Bluescats is a blues trio from Germany. The band is known for their collaboration with a wide range of blues artists. In 2023, with singer Tommie Harris, singer Brenda Boykin, and harmonica player Ralf Grottian, they released the album ‘Bring It On Home’, a musical tribute to the legendary bluesman Willie Dixon.
On October 31, 2025, Bluescats performed at Haus Eifgen in Wermelskirchten, North Rhine-Westphalia. The guest singer was Greg Copeland, born in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1954 and living in Hameln, West Germany, for decades. Copeland has long been friends with Jackson Browne, who produced Copeland’s debut album ‘Revenge Will Come’ in 1982. Recordings of the Bluescats and Greg Copeland concert at Haus Eifgen were released last month on the album ‘The Soul Of The Blues’. The title says it all: they were searching for the soul of the blues with their own songs and covers of James Brown, T-Bone Walker, Eric Bibb, Big Joe Williams, and Jerry Beach. In the opening track, the Copeland composition *Brown Eyed Handsome Man*, Greg Copeland's soulful vocals are immediately audible, and the band presents its calling card with the tight rhythm section and the tasty guitar solo. James Brown's *Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag* is dazzling funky soul with raw vocals and fierce (wah-wah) guitar work. In the exciting *I Like The Way*, written by Copeland and Brandt, Jens Filser is once again in fine form with his beautiful guitar playing. Copeland and Brandt also wrote *I Get Lost Sometimes*, a beautiful soul ballad nearly seven minutes long.
The second cover is the classic *Stormy Monday Blues* by T-Bone Walker. A brilliant blues ballad lasting well over seven minutes, impressive vocals, and a famously soloing Filser. Gospel influences can be heard in Eric Bibb’s Don’t Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down. The traditional, best known from Big Joe Williams, is a groovy boogie in which, alongside the rhythm section, Filser once again squeezes everything out of his guitar. The bass tones in the boogie Barbecue Boogie, written by Copeland, are beautiful. I Play The Blues For You by Jerry Beach is a long, brilliant blues ballad with guitarist Filser in top form. The Copeland and Brandt song Put That Gun Down is funky soul with intense vocals by Copeland. The last three songs were written by bassist Till Brandt. The uptempo A Crying Shame features excellent musicianship once again, after which Copeland lets the audience enjoy his soulful vocals in the funky title track Soul Of The Blues. In the closing number, the instrumental Simple Song, the men of Bluescats demonstrate their great class once more.
Conclusion:With the album ‘The Soul Of The Blues’, Bluescats and Greg Copeland have indeed found the soul of the blues and stolen my heart.
