For this CD, Daniel Droixhe—a native of Liège better known as Elmore D—serves up a potent dose of rural blues. To set the tone, Elmore dives straight into the muddy waters of the Mississippi, bringing back a sound that is deeply authentic and rooted in tradition. Big Dave (formerly of the Electric Kings), a longtime musical partner of Daniel’s, joins in on the harmonica. Marc Thys handles production duties and plays the washboard. With a mix of mandolin, washboard, dobro, acoustic guitar, touches of slide, and harmonica solos, all the ingredients for perfect musical chemistry are here! And believe me, it’s enough to win over even the most skeptical listeners. Some tracks call to mind Hound Dog Taylor. On others, Elmore performs solo on acoustic guitar and vocals (such as "Mama Sit"). "Tot Seu," a tribute to Tampa Red, is pure gold! The album features ten compositions that blend a rich, gritty 1950s sound with a modern touch—all delivered in a highly original, personal style. Elmore adapts existing lyrics to sing them in the Liège dialect, and it really works! (Check out "Dji n'ouveure qui l'londi" and "Li rwe dél rowe d'Erquy"). I also really enjoyed "Can't Afford to Do It," "I Want You to Know," "If You Take Me Back," and "Drop Down Mama." Beyond being a great listen, this album defies common stereotypes (at least in Belgium) by bringing Flemings and Walloons together in a spirit of genuine camaraderie! That’s the magic of the blues for you!
