The Trevor B. Power Band is based in northwest New Jersey. Power grew up in a household with parents that loved all kinds of music. He received his first guitar when he was fifteen and began playing the rock n’ roll of the sixties and seventies. He spent most of his adult life playing solo acoustic at coffee houses and bars in the northeast and Arizona. Power became a DJ at Centenary College’s public radio station, WNTI where he further schooled himself on the history of the blues and the music business in general. He befriended Bobby Whitlock, of “Derek and the Dominos” who encouraged Power to write and play more of his own music. He shared the stage with Johnny Charles, Dave Fields, and Steve Krase’s krewe, including 13 time Blues Music nominee Trudy Lynn, and guitarist Bob Lanza. Power released his debut album “Everyday Angel” in 2019, and followed-up with 2021’s “What Is Real”, also on Farm 189 Records. All of the songs on “Are We Ever Free” were co-written by Power and Dave Fields at the Farm 189 Studios in Califon, New Jersey. The album was recorded, engineered, arranged, and mixed by Dave Fields. The mastering was completed by Burt Conrad Szerlid. Power plays guitar throughout the recording and takes all lead vocals. Additional guitarists include Lanza, Charlie Macarone, Fields, and Anthony Krizan (from The Spin Doctors). Fields also plays drums, bass, piano and organ. Additional drummers include Steve Holley, Tom Dicianni, and Krizan. The harmonica is played by Will Wilde. The horn section includes saxophonists Tim Timko and Baron Raymonde. The background vocalists are the Califon Chiswick Singers.
The lead track, “Let Yourself Fly”, tells us to “spread your wings and let yourself fly”, and we get to hear this rockin’ ensemble for the first time with a beautiful vocal from Power. On “Lady Luck” Power sings “I have the blues all day long, I have the blues singing my song”. On “Mystery”, “I used to think the world was a better place but not since I fell from grace”. On the title track, “Are We Ever Free” and often throughout the album Power sounds like Bob Dylan, especially when he recites a narrative. “Going To Washington” with Wilde’s harmonica, includes the lyric “I’m going to Washington, buy me a favor or two, I’m feeling lucky and I got the blues”. On “TR3” Power sings “I got the pedal to the metal all the way to the floor”, there is some great guitar to be heard on this rockin’ tune. Power’s Triumph sports the license plate TBPBAWEF. On “Come On Now” Power vocalizes “there is a woman with three jobs to feed her children, come on down to help our sisters and our brothers”. On “Trouble To The Core” Power sings “here I sit the broken hearted…oh baby, why did you ever let me go, you gave me no explanation and now I’m troubled to the core”. “The Noose”, “this time will surely pass”. The closer “Man Goes Blind” sports the lyric “did you see a man go blind, did you see all the hatred in the world…there are people dying in the street”; Fields plays some fine organ.Whether through real-life experiences or flights of imagination, Power’s music embodies the essence of living fully and embracing every moment. So don’t be surprised if you find yourself on your feet and dancing along. On “Are We Ever Free”, the urge to move is irresistible ~ Richard Ludmerer
