At just 6 years old, Ralph began to take an interest in the drums and it took him only a few years to become proficient enough to accompany, with his brother Donald on guitar, to accompany their father under the name Big Daddy Kinsey & His Fabulous Sons. While Donald's reputation, who played with Albert King, soared, the two brothers formed a blues rock trio with bassist Busta Jones, White Lightnin', which released an eponymous album on Island Records produced by Felix Pappalardi. The adventure was short-lived, and Donald continued his career as an accompanist alongside Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, among others. After a joint reggae single under the name Don Kinsey And The Chosen Ones, Donald and Ralph, with their younger brother Kenneth on bass, teamed up under the name Kinsey Report – a play on words with the works of sexology pioneer Alfred Kinsey – to accompany their father on his first album, which was released in 1985 on Rooster Records. Spotted by Bruce Iglauer, the brothers, reinforced by guitarist Ron Price, then released their first independent record, in a muscular register far from the more traditional paternal approach. The blues boom of the 1990s was particularly favorable to them, and they released a second album for Alligator, before recording two records for Pointblank. They accompanied their father again, under the name Big Daddy Kinsey And Sons on “Can’t Let Go”, which appeared on Blind Pig in 1990.
Although the group’s recording career was interrupted in 1998 with “Smoke And Steel”, which marked their return to Alligator, the brothers continued to perform together occasionally – they were on the bill for the Chicago Blues Festival in 2022 – until Ralph’s health problems prevented him from playing on stage.
