*The Teacher’s Rules* is the second album by musician and guitarist Cristiano Ferreira. The title alludes to the recognition Cristiano has earned among musicians in the Santa Catarina scene as a mentor and a benchmark instrumentalist.
The repertoire features original compositions and reinterpretations spanning New Orleans, Delta, Jump, and Texas blues styles. Recording began in 2015, with a core band comprising Alexandre Green (keyboards), Dayvk Martins (drums), Danilo Brito (electric bass), and Juamp Carranza (acoustic bass).
Seven guest musicians also contribute to the album. Among them is Luciano Leães—a friend and collaborator from Cristiano’s time living and performing in Porto Alegre—who brings New Orleans piano influences and Hammond organ sounds to the tracks "Angelica" (Duke Ellington), "If You Care About Me" (original), "Give Your Love to Me" (original), "Brioi Blues" (original), and "Wee Baby Blues" (Big Joe Turner). Adrian Jimenez, a harmonica player from Buenos Aires, revisits the acoustic/rural side of Muddy Waters on the track "Who's Gonna Be Your Sweet Man When I'm Gone." Clark Carballo’s washboard and Adrian’s harmonica evoke a rural blues sound on the original composition "Lonesome Blues."
In the horn section, collaborators from Brass Groove Brasil—Jean Carlos (trumpet), Braion Johnny (tenor and alto sax), and Carlos Schmidt (trombone)—channel the sound of 1950s "little big bands" on Cristiano’s versions of songs by T-Bone Walker and Roy Milton.
On acoustic bass, Tomas Oliveira adds a touch of class to tracks where the Jump blues influence comes to the fore, such as on the instrumental "Angelica."
