Eddie Kirkland is a legend among those in the know about blues underground back stories. He toured with John Lee Hooker, played with, was beloved by, and/or mentored too many name-brand legends to list here (cough -hendrix -cough - otis redding - cough), but he never got anywhere near their commercial success. Instead, he toured nearly constantly, taking with him and breaking in some of the best side men (and women) you've never heard of.The band on Some Like It Raw is exceptional. Timo Shanko and Ray Anthony are virtuoso players who came out of Boston and later settled in New York to form the Fully Celebrated Orchestra, Their technical skills are unparalleled, but what's important in this context is that they can swing their butts (and yours) off. Seriously - look into these guys. Billy Boardman is a well-known and much-loved Boston-based front man in his own right (now retired), but he has zero problem in the side position. And he, Timo, and Ray are as cohesive a band as you could want to find. Then there's Eddie: dynamic, explosive, and, yes, raw. Great record. If you like the blues - the real blues - you will love this record.
