Born Calvin Batchelor, he is a fantastic Canadian guitarist (also a skilled keyboardist). Prior to Quiver, he was in several bands, such as Take Four or Forge Band. He went to England in 1969, and he helped form Quiver. This was around 1970. The band was formed in Ladbroke Grove, London. After some initial tries, Cal Batchelor joined, thus forming the first complete lineup of the band:
Tim Renwick (guitar)
Cal Batchelor (guitar, keyboards, vocals)
Bruce Thomas (bass)
John 'Willie' Wilson (drums)
They were the first group to play at Rainbow Theatre in London (supporting The Who).
Their first album, Quiver, was completed with help from great sax player Dick Parry. A superb album, it contains killer guitar duels (as in the great 'Killer man'), outstanding bass playing, and tight ryhthm on drums. Another great song is 'Reason for staying'. I wonder why this album is not released on CD!!
Their 2nd album is Gone in the morning, as magnificent as the 1st one. The self titled track, 'Gone in the morning' is a masterpiece, and I also like 'I might stumble' a lot.
But soon later, the whole band decided merging in late 1973 with Sutherland Brothers, forming Sutherland Brothers & Quiver, but Cal Batchelor decided to leave.
After leaving Quiver, Cal formed a band called 747:
Cal Batchelor (guitar, vocals)
Archie Leggett (bass)
Henry Crallan (keyboards)
Freddie Smith (drums)
In April 73, they joined Kevin Ayers (as "Kevin Ayers & 747") until September 73, with this extended lineup:
Kevin Ayers (vocals, guitar)
Cal Batchelor (guitar)
Gerry Fitzgerald (guitar)
Archie Leggett (bass)
Henry Crallan (keyboards)
Freddie Smith (drums)
They toured promoting Kevin's previous album, Bananamour (but Cal doesn't appear there). Cal's recorded contribution to Kevin Ayers discography is the album The confessions of Dr. Dream and other stories, May 74, also appearing John Gustafson, Ollie Halsall, Mike Moran, John G. Perry, Mark Warner, Mike Oldfield, Mike Giles, . Cal plays in one song, 'Everybody's sometime and some people's all the time blues', with a 4 guitar lineup: Kevin Ayers, Cal Batchelor, Mike Oldfield and Sam Mitchell, plus Henry Crallan on piano.
He then joined Long John Baldry for a while (as supporters for Faces). There, he met Ronnie Lane, joining his band later (one album: See me, 1980, also with Mel Collins, Bruce Rowland, Steve Simpson, Eric Clapton, Henry McCullough. Cal plays on 3 tracks: 'One step', 'Good ol' boys boogie' and 'Don't tell me now').
In February 1977, Cal formed another band called Kicks, with two members of Hawkwind (Alan Powell and Paul Rudolph) and an ex-member of Vinegar Joe (Steve York):
Cal Batchelor (guitar, vocals)
Paul Rudolph (guitar, vocals)
Steve York (bass)
Alan Powell (drums)
They played their first gig at Rock Garden in April 1977. But after a short tour, they sadly split in July 1977.
In the 80s, Cal returned to Canada, where he still is. He has been fronting his own Cal Batchelor Band for the last 4 years. This is the lineup:
Cal Batchelor (guitar, vocals)
Trevor Newman (bass)
Robbie King (keyboards)
Jimmy Ferguson (drums)
Cal has recently released a solo album. Discography:
Live at the Rock Shop (only available on cassette)
Now playing (Nov 97)
There's also a collective album called West coast blues party, vol. I, including two songs ('Someday you're gonna need me' and 'She can't be trusted' performed by Cal Batchelor).
His album, The Cal Batchelor Project, is a masterpiece. Cal is superb singing and playing guitar, and the band is also great. Superb Hammond work, and some tracks have a guest horn section. The album can be obtained at Cal Batchelor's website at http://members.xoom.com/calbatchelor/
Sessions:
Cal appears in albums by:
Kevin Ayers (Confessions of Dr. Dream, 1974, with Kevin Ayers, Ray Cooper, Ollie Halsall, Sam Mitchell, Mike Oldfield, Mark Warner, Henry Crallan, John Gustafson, John G Perry, Mike Moran, Steve Nye, Mike Ratledge, Rupert Hine, Trevor Jones, Lol Coxhill, Sean Milligan, Mike Giles, Nico, Rosetta Hightower, Doris Troy, Joanne Williams)
Cochise (Swallow tales, 1971, with Mick Grabham, B.J. Cole, Nigel Olsson, Caleb Quaye, Rick Wills, John 'Willie' Wilson, Tim Renwick)
Curtiss Muldoon (Curtiss Muldoon, 1971, with Bruce Thomas, Tony Ashton. Cal plays guitar on 'Man from Afghanistan', and organ on 'Long long time')

The gift of a guitar at ten years old sparked the journey of a lifetime for Lendon Balch. A Memphis native, raised in the music-influenced home of rock-and-roll, his music reflects a broad range of musical influences. As a songwriter he has the ability to portray colorful images with humor, as well as deep thought-provoking lyrics.Initial musical influences included Jim Croce and James Taylor. Once an electric guitar was thrown into the mix at fifteen, bands like The Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker took center stage. "Playing until my fingers bled", Lendon said while lifting and dropping the needle on the old Motorola record player, he learned licks from Toy Caldwell and Dickie Betts. Branching out discovering Santana, Lendon discovered latin sounds and rhythms. After purchasing George Benson's "Breezing" album Lendon says his music style changed into something most rock bands didn't much care for at the time. Playing in southern rock, classic rock, country, religious, pop, acoustic and blues bands he found himself having to fake it and play like others while ignoring his own style. You eventually reach a time when the music becomes the most important thing. Sitting down in his early fifties to begin recording the songs he had been writing for decades he discovered it was the music that mattered. Now you get to hear Lendon do his own music in a way that he wants it done.Lendon's passion for music is crystallized in his original albums, produced after years of writing and performing in Memphis. The music is a great creative mix of instruments, styles and sound; all very true to his southern musical roots.

About Back Alley Players:
If you’ve been wondering what’s the state of America’s authentic ‘roots’ music lately and where are its contemporary practitioners, well look no further, because here comes the Back Alley Players!  This tight and tasteful ensemble is creating a blues for the 21st century which is aptly demonstrated in their new CD outing Beyond the Blues.
This dynamic band is made up of seasoned musical pros from a variety of musical backgrounds from Jazz and Funk, to Hip-Hop and R&B.  But make no mistake, the Back Alley Players are playing a blues for the new century that draws on many of the disparate elements of traditional blues which are rarely heard in one setting.  As Blues Blast Magazine has pointed out in reference to Beyond the Blues, these dudes “deliver one of the tastiest and schizophrenic soul and country blues releases since, well, ever.”  Since Johnny Turco (‘Johnny T.’) formed the Back Alley Players they have performed in New York City at the internationally famous Nuyorican Poets Café and the Sugar Bar (owned by international recording stars Ashford & Simpson).  In addition, two songs from Beyond the Blues—Nuttin’ But the Blues and Can’t Get You Outta My Head have debuted on WHCR 90.3 and WBAI 99.5 in New York City, and Beyond the Blues is #21 on the Living Blues charts and #18 on the Roots Music charts. The Back Alley Players’ rhythm section is grounded by drummer Stix Bones and bassist Al Brisbane—and what a foundation it is!  These guys provide a pocket that effortlessly propels the band and allows singer L. Umar Conry and guitarist/mandolin player Johnny T. to put the icing on the cake while gliding on that propulsion like an ice cube on a hot stove.  The Back Alley Players are a soulful combination of the talents and energy of four very impressive individuals* who form a seamless whole.  Few groups capture the harmonious cohesion that these players achieve so that the result is as if the music is emanating from one human musical entity, as opposed to the collective identity of a group of separate individuals. The Back Alley Players currently reside in New York City.

The contemporary Blues album was recorded and mastered in Las Vegas at The Tone Factory with engineer Vinnie Castaldo. Dick Earl’s Electric Witness showcase their original brand of “High Desert Blues" with this thought-provoking album.
Electric Witness is the result of four decades of living the blues, loving rock n roll, and learning life’s lessons by leaning on his faith. The man and musician behind the music is Dick Earl, an artist whose work has been described as “honest and strong, from the depths of a true bluesman’s soul.”
Dick Earl, found out that he needed brain surgery in 2008, due a condition called Chiari. He was losing his ability to perform, and no one was sure if Dick's unique harmonica sound would return to the stage post-op. Fortunately, it was a speedy and successful road to recovery for Dick. Since then he has rededicated himself, and feels even more drive to perform and share his music.
Dick Earl has been spreading the love for blues for decades with his raw vocals, solid guitar styling, and stirring harmonica, "from the depths of a true bluesman's soul." (KTIM Radio)
With Isaac Ericksen, Mari Ericksen, and Thomas Anderson, Dick Earl's Electric Witness showcases a rhythm section that is second to none that has won notoriety on the Utah Blues Festival stage (2023) and beyond.

My new album 'Dirty Work' is released this Friday 13th. Always exciting putting out a new album, even though most of the tracks have already been released through the last year.
But that's the way I like to do things these days, and it has a lot of advantages. The songs get thoroughly road-tested and can be tweaked where necessary. And it keeps me entertained throughout the year and keeps the buzz going.
So I'm trying to get the best use out of this new fangled streaming world. I do love the immediacy and versatility that it provides.
Releasing the album also gives me a chance to catch up with my many friends and associates in the blues radio world - many thanks to all those already playing or planning to play tracks from the album.
Meanwhile, a little background..
From 1968 I was a full time on the road blues rockin' guitar player with Killing Floor and then SALT, and then from the mid 80s led my own band, touring all over Europe, the US and beyond. These days I mainly enjoy making music in my own small recording studio here on the Surrey / Sussex border and releasing it online.
Unencumbered by record company, management or even other musicians, I just go where my muse takes me and feel free to experiment.
I like to explore different styles which might go towards country or retro pop, but fundamentally I'm a blues guitar player, and I try to give my 'official' albums a more focussed blues / rock direction.
And with some success - the last album 'The Blues, Man, Rides Again' made it to the No.1 spot on the Roots Music Report UK Airplay Chart, knocking the Rolling Stones off in the process!
'Dirty Work' releasing Friday 13 September... More news to follow.

Duke And The Drivers - Harder Than Before

Year:2006

Size:119,8 MB
Label:Groove International Records
Styles:Rock/Funk/Soul/Blues

Tracks Listing:
 1. Harder Than Before - 4:01
 2. Brand New Love - 2:51
 3. Another Kind Of Love - 3:24
 4. Prodigal Son - 3:33
 5. Just Ain't The Rock - 5:05
 6. Funk All Over The Place - 6:30
 7. A Mind Of Its Own - 4:07
 8. Loco-Loco - 5:07
 9. 60 Minute Man - 2:50
10. Automobile - 4:13
11. Sweet Soul Music - 4:31
12. Angel - 5:42

There are a lot of Boston bands that played in the seventies that have came back to prominence in the current era. Duke and the Drivers is one of those bands; The Destroyed is another. Even though the vocals on "Harder Than Before", the opening track, are scratchy in the C.C. Deville/Joe Walsh way, the smooth style of the rest of the band is enough to make up for that. Still, it only takes Duke and the Drivers a few minutes to get their old fans back and tons more. The harmonica solo tops things off; the band is hard hitting in the seventies rock way.
The band continues their tear with "!Just Ain`t the Rock". The most interesting thing about this track is the very bass like sound of the tuba during the track, which does not seem to make its way into rock music fairly often. What results with this track is a song that sounds eerily similar to the Full House theme. While not as immediately radio-ready as  "Harder Than Before", it still is catchy in its own way. The third track on the disc is "Funk All Over The Place", a track that uses the title genre to make a groovy sound that draws on early Stevie Wonder to add to their own sound. The brass makes it`s triumphant return again with this track, and links together the first segment of the disc. The band goes into their cleanup track "A Mind of It`Own" strong, with a tremendous amount of momentum."A Mind of Its` Own" is very slow and influenced by a gospel type of sound, but the energy that was created by the band on the previous tracks is still more than enough to keep individuals interested in "Harder Than Before"."Loco-Loco" is the track that will bring Duke and the Drivers back up to their previous level of popularity, if not higher. The heavily Latin influenced track will bring fans of Santana into the fold, while the funk in the track links together the song with "A Mind of Its`Own". The hard-hitting choruses bring the track over the top; this is a fun, catchy song that will be in listeners ears for months to come. The band shows its fans that they have learned lessons with each and every year that they have been a band; this smoothed-out album is impressive as hell.

Remember the old “Big Mac Attack” burger ad? Well, Big Mac is back with a Blues attack! With artists like 66-year-old Mac Arnold back making good music, why do we suffer Blues pretenders? Arnold sings with confidence from years of experience, and that confidence is summed up in the title, Backbone & Gristle. Mac Arnold has a long Blues pedigree including being in a band often joined by a young piano player named James Brown to a stint in Muddy Waters band to recording with Otis Spann and John Lee Hooker to working as a producer on Soul Train to fronting his own band, Plate Full O’ Blues. Mac now resides in Pelzer, SC, where at age ten he got his first taste of the Blues when he learned to play his brother William Leroy Arnold’s home-made gasoline can guitar. This album is dedicated to this older brother. After getting back in the game and going back to his roots with 2006’s Nothin’ To Prove, Arnold serves up another tasty mess of Down-south-deep Blues and Chicago Blues in fifteen original songs written, arranged, and produced by the entire band. Arnold’s wearied but powerful baritone voice leads on all songs. Mac Arnold is featured on all leads vocal, gas can on a couple, and some bass The more than competent band backing is Danny Keylon on main bass; Austin Brashier on guitar and harmony vocals; Max Hightower on keyboards, harmonica, and rhythm guitar; and Mike Whitt on drums. Special guests are Mark McMakin and Mike Murray on bass, Jim Peterman on Hammond B3 organ, and Steve Keeter on piano. Studious notes from Brashier’s guitar in front of Hightower’s piano and Peterman’s organ open track one (“Love & Relations”), followed one minute later by Arnold singing some sage advice for lovers, “...just hold each other’s hand, open up your mind, just be truthful when you speak, don’t waste each other’s time.” And, off you go into seven minutes of wonderful, yes!, THIS-is-the-Blues/ The second cut picks up the tempo slightly for Arnold’s heartfelt but humorous lyrics about meeting a young lady looking for genuine affection. Is the protagonist ready to provide? “U Dawg Gone Right,” sings Mac while plucking some notes on that gas can seen on the album’s back cover. The title track (Cut three) opens with Brashier peeling off mean guitar licks to set the tone of Arnold’s story about his share cropping father’s advice born of hard work. “Son, if you listen to me, and do as I say, you’ll be a man we can depend on one day. But right now your backbone ain’t nothin’ but a gristle.” On the first guitar solo, Brashier flourishes on top of Danny Keylon’s steady pumping bass and pocket partner Mike Whitt on drums. The instrumental “Blow Till You Blow” finds Max Hightower’s harmonica blasting and trilling in the finest of tradition.By track 6, Mac relates a spoken word tale of the “Gas Can Story” and then proceeds to play rhythm on the barely-in-recognizable-tune instrument for “Gonna Move To The Other Side of Town.” Now, that’s as down home as coarse ground cornbread and greasy collard greens.Mac can’t understand excess in “Things I Don’t Need” with Hightower leading on piano and Brashier slowly punctuating the mood with single guitar notes. A similar theme is found in the starkly arranged “The Garden Song” with only harmonica and guitar backup. Most tracks run four to eight minutes with tracks 14 and 15 recorded festival live. Bob Margolin and Willie Smith show up nicely on 14. The set closing track 15 is a faster, uplifting eight minute live alternate version of the slower inspirational, studio track 10, “I Can Do Anything.” Both versions feature guest children on background harmony vocals.Welcome back, Mac. First, you didn’t have Nothin’ To Prove, but, now, you done did prove Blues is alive and well in the Carolinas, and thanks to your CDs, all points beyond!

Las Vegas-based Jimmy Carpenter is on a roll. The Saxophonist/singer/songwriter is a perennial favorite at the annual Blues Music Awards in Memphis, having been voted in the “Best Instrumentalist/Horn” category with seven nominations and two wins
Now, he proves he’s Just ‘Got Started,’ with the upcoming release of his new album on September 13. Just Got Started was recorded in March at Greaseland Studios in San Jose, California, and was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Christoffer “Kid” Andersen.
“Jimmy Carpenter continues to be a stand-out artist in the contemporary Blues genre. His songwriting is on point and his voice is front and center,” says Gulf Coast president Mike Zito. “Arguably one of the best sax players around, his artistry on this new record has come together to make the circle complete.”
“When my dear friend Mike Zito asked if I’d be interested in working with producer Kid Andersen at Greaseland Studios for my third Gulf Coast Records release, my answer was an immediate and empathic ‘YES!,” recalls Carpenter. “Kid has done some very fine work with several friends of mine, and I love those records.
“I love Soul music, and my idea for this one was to lean in that direction. Still Blues-based, but also song oriented and funky cool with a kind of vintage soul vibe. I told Kid that, and he immediately said ‘Yes, we can do that!’
“The week before the session I was a little nervous, and called my friend Albert Castiglia, who had just recorded there. He gave me some very good advice: ‘Jimmy, just trust Kid, he has a plan;’ and he was so right. And the plan was to take my songs and put them in the capable hands of some of the finest musicians on the planet, which worked out very well.”
“The title track, ‘(Feels Like) I Just Got Started,’ is my attempt to use the last set of a night as a metaphor for my life in music,” explains Carpenter.” I’ve been at this a very long time and honestly, my career is at its high point; it’s not ebbing, it’s flowing! I really do feel in many ways like I’m just getting started. There’s a line in the bridge, ‘Don’t blink or you’ll miss it!’ and that is a fact!
“Living in Vegas, people often ask if I’m a gambler. My stock answer is always – I only gamble with my heart. That’s been banging around my head for years, and I finally wrote the song. It has the advantage of being true, and that gamble has paid off nicely here in Sin City.
“There are nods to some of the Blues icons: a very different version of Little Walter’s ‘My Babe;’ a nice cover of Otis Rush’s ‘Working Man;’ a nod to Delbert McClinton, one of my favorite people, and his song ‘Leap of Faith’ (Lisa ‘Li’l Baby’ Andersen absolutely crushes that one); as well as a super funky version of Allen Toussaint’s ‘Night People.’
“And for the first time I was able to record not one, but two tunes from my saxophone hero, King Curtis: ‘Soul Theme’ and ‘Midnight Blue.’ In kind of a full circle thing, bass player Jerry Jemmott was King Curtis’ bassist, so I felt kind of a cosmic connection to him as we recorded those, and of course, Jerry’s bass lines were perfect.
“This album is very different than the previous five; more groovy and soulful, but not overdone. The musicianship really brings it home, and I could feel the love as we recorded it. I’m playing these songs live, and from the reaction we’re getting, I think the people dig it! I am so grateful for Kid’s steady hand and unparalleled guitar work, Jerry Jemmott, Derrick D’Mar Martin, Jim Pugh, Bobby Vega, and Lisa Andersen for taking really good care of me and my songs… And of course, Mike Zito and everyone at Gulf Coast for this opportunity. I Just Got Started, and I still got a long way to go!.” (https://www.bluestownmusic.nl/new-release-jimmy-carpenter-just-got-started/)

Henry Oden (born February 8, 1947) is an American blues musician from California. Born in Oakland, Oden grew up in Richmond. His parents had migrated from the south to work in the shipyards, and Oden's father bought him a guitar from a Montgomery Ward catalogue when he was 15 years old. He was taught to play by Robert Kelton, a guitarist for Jimmy McCracklin, and within a year he was sitting in on jam sessions around the local area; he would also play and sing in local churches. In the 1960s he was the bass player with Freddy & The Stone Souls, working with Freddie Stone Stewart, brother of Sly Stone, and backing many local acts such as Rodger Collins and Fillmore Slim. He was also a member of Loading Zone, and recorded behind the group's vocalist Linda Tillery when the group split up. In the 1970s, Oden toured for a short while with Freddie King, and helped to develop the career of Lady Bianca. He returned to music in his own right in the early 1980s, working with Mark Naftalin's Blue Monday band, recording with Clifton Chenier, and touring internationally and recording with the San Francisco Blues Festival package. In the middle of the decade he teamed up with Joe Louis Walker, providing Walker with "Shade Tree Mechanic" (among other songs throughout the years). This relationship was spasmodic, and for a while Oden based himself in Canada, taking a degree in humanities. Over the years, Oden appeared with: Jimmy Reed, Pee Wee Crayton, Big Mama Thornton, Mike Bloomfield, Buddy Ace, Curtis Lawson, Bill Withers, Little Joe Blue, Chris Cain, Percy Mayfield, Craig Horton, J.J. Malone, Troyce Key, Cool Papa Sadler, Mississippi Johnny Waters, Big Bones, Sonny Rhodes, Earl King, Johnny Adams, Maria Muldaur and Boz Scaggs.  Oden has two releases under his own name, and he has appeared on numerous albums (his website discography lists 27). He appeared behind John Lee Hooker in the film Survivors, and he can be seen and heard on the Blue Monday videos, and with Percy Mayfield in Poet Laureate of the Blues.

Within months of their introduction at the Gary Gand Pro Blues Jam, the pair began the studio work that grew to involve many of the fine players who attend the legendary Tuesday night sessions. On this CD, many soulful soloists - frequently Mick and the guitarist Gand himself, combine with fine vocalists and the tightly nuanced Mintz/Shaffer rhythm section, treating the listener to fifteen tracks of addictive blues, jazz, and/or rock that is sure to cure whatever ails!

"Built around Mason's thunderous, melodic percussion and Johnston's sinewy intertwining of guitar with Ray's lat-steel, the songs on their self-produced debut sizzle with energy and explode at any moment. The tracks evoke Southern rock legends—the Molly Hatchets, the Outlaws, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils—but they're not nostalgic, fetishistic reenactments of bygone eras. This is the sound of the New South, bigger and badder than ever" ~ 2012 John Picard.
