Cássio Albernaz is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Porto Alegre (RS), recognized as one of the most prominent exponents of the new generation of blues in Brazil. With a solid national and international career, his musical identity combines the rawness of traditional American blues with the richness of influences from Brazilian music, reggae, and rock. Born and raised in Porto Alegre in the 1980s, he discovered his passion for music in the Porto Alegre samba tradition, between rehearsals at the Beija-Flor do Sul samba school, run by his great-uncle Jorginho Oliveira, and samba circles at Banda da Saldanha in Ceará Lanches, in the Menino Deus neighborhood. "These are my earliest memories of seeing music happening as a living Black cultural expression. That visual and auditory impact marked me decisively." My first encounter with the instrument happened unexpectedly, when I found a broken guitar in the basement of a childhood friend's house. “Restoring that guitar became an obsession. The next challenge was figuring out how to play it, at a time when access to information and teaching methods were extremely scarce.” Initially self-taught, he soon expanded his horizons by practicing with other friends during his adolescence. Later, he refined his technique and theory in guitar lessons with Edilson Ávila and Júlio Herrlein “Chumbinho”, two of the greatest guitar references in Porto Alegre. Although immersed in different musical genres during his adolescence, such as reggae and rock, the definitive turning point came in the early 1990s, guided by an aesthetic awakening and the impact of Stevie Ray Vaughan's album Texas Flood . “It was summer and I was at the beach with my cousins. We went to a store to buy heavy metal records, like Metallica and Iron Maiden, which were all the rage among teenagers at the time. When I entered the store, Stevie Ray Vaughan was playing. I froze. I immediately told the clerk that I wanted that record and everything else he had in that style. It was love at first listen.” Thus, seeking the language and origins of the Blues became a life purpose and a way to unleash artistic expression.
