Al Grigg - Blues And Other Things

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2015
Time: 29:52
Size: 68,6 MB
Label: Self Released
Styles: Blues/Electric Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. All The Way Home - 2:49
 2. Your Meal Ticket (I Ain't Gonna Be) - 3:05
 3. It Just Don't Have To Be That Way - 3:47
 4. Dead End Boogie - 5:33
 5. I'm Gonna Jump Right Into The Fire - 3:26
 6. In Cecilia's Garden - 3:55
 7. American Dream - 7:14

Al Grigg has enjoyed a pretty cool music career since his 1975 debut album with one of the pioneer indie bands, The Flying Dogs of Jupiter. Since then he has done a little bit of everything, from playing with a 50s/60s tribute band, to traveling to three continents while living overseas for a decade. Al returned to the United States in 2010 and formed The Fine Line, who he still plays with in the New York / New Jersey area. He gets out on his own too, with an upcoming tour abroad and a new solo CD to entertain his fans. Blues and Other Things is the latest self-produced album from Grigg, and he did all of the heavy lifting on this one. Al wrote all seven of the songs (some of them from Flying Dogs of Jupiter albums), took the lead on all of the vocals, and played all of the guitar and drum parts. Guest artists Greta Tristram (harmonica) and Frank Kaiser (rhythm guitar) joined him on this project. Looking at the sleeve for this disc, it appears that Al Grigg is a bit of tone junkie, as he made notes of the different guitars and amplifiers that he used to get the desired sounds in the studio. It certainly worked out well, as you will hear in the opener, “All the Way Home.” This is a country rocker with hard and crunchy overdriven guitars, and Al’s voice goes all the way from smooth to jagged — he can really howl out the lyrics! This is followed up by a more straight-up blues tune, “Your Meal Ticket (I Ain’t Gonna Be),” which uses two or three layers of guitars to achieve a fun and bouncy beat under Griggs smorgasbord of double entendres. Keeping thing moving, the next tune is “It Just Don’t Have to Be That Way,” which provides a healthy dose of smooth rhythm and blues to accompany the heavy lyrics. Grigg lays down a very tasteful guitar solo on this one, and he has a wonderful feel for the instrument. Then the mood turns to country blues with “Dead End Boogie” which has some well-placed harp from Tristam and plenty of catchy guitar licks. There are a also a three rock (or maybe even pop) tracks. “I’m Gonna Jump Right Into the Fire” and “In Cecelia’s Garden” are well constructed, as their lush instrumentation and vocal harmonies go well with the lyrics which are thoughtful with good imagery. Finally, the set finishes up with seven minutes of “American Dream,” a hard-hitting Flying Dogs of Jupiter rocking jam where Grigg and Tristam get to finally cut loose with everything they’ve got. So, after listening to the whole thing it turns out that the album title is true: this CD really is full of blues and other things! As this release comes in at a bit under 30 minutes it would have been nice to squeeze in a few more tracks. This being said, all seven of the songs are solid; Al Grigg did a fine job with Blues and Other Things, and it is an entertaining listen for fans of blues and blues-related music. Check out his website for winter tour information as there are shows listed for the UK and Ireland, with more dates to be announced soon.

14. Follow Your Heart -  4:34
15. Worried Man - 10:01

Vermont blues-rock institutions The Nobby Reed Project have earned a reputation as one of the area's top club acts, largely due to their leader's passionate guitar playing and rugged vocals. The trio's latest, Moonlight Drivin,' is another dose of shuffle-blues and no-nonsense rock 'n' roll. The disc is sure to delight longtime fans, and maybe even entice some new ones. Reed's style invites comparisons to late electric-blues virtuoso Stevie Ray Vaughn, but plenty sets the Green Mountain axeman apart. First of all, he's a surprisingly versatile singer, delivering both pop harmonies and Gregg Allman-style howls with ease. Moonlight Drivin' contains several barroom classics, such as the title track and the aptly named "Blues Train." While Reed's guitar work on those tunes is commendable, he truly shines on the Santana-esque composition "Morning Glory." His impeccable phrasing provides a scorching example of the electric guitar's versatility; the track is a diamond in this blue-collar rough. The laid-back groove of "I Wish You Peace" is sweet and mellow, featuring smooth harmonies and a vibe reminiscent of late '60s West Coast rock. "You Are" boasts richly textured background vocals and lead guitar work recalling that of Peter Green and Roy Buchanan.Drummer Eric Belrose and bassist/harmonica player Tim Comings lay down a solid foundation, steering clear of flashy fills and showy runs. "Common Ground" gives Comings a little more room to maneuver, however. A crawling, minor-key blues number, the tune features a slinky bass line that nicely complements Reed's sultry licks. The lyrics leave a bit to be desired, but nobody listens to this kind of stuff for deep prose. Though "Powerful Thing" supplies some stinging lead guitar, for example, Reed's vocal refrain is patently unoriginal. OK, we know you've got the blues -- do you have to tell us so many times? To be fair, the album's shortcomings are merely those of the genre itself. Reed and bandmates possess enough musical muscle to plow through the cliches with their dignity intact. Moonlight Drivin' would sound great over beers and a game of pool, but there's still plenty of nuance if you're listening for it. Hear NRP Friday, July 1, at the Middle Earth Music Hall in Bradford.

The Boneshakers - Book Of Spells

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 1997
Time: 47:43
Size: 109,4 MB
Label: Virgin Records
Styles: Funky Blues
Art: Full

Tracks Listing:
 1. Cold Sweat - 3:47
 2. Break Down The Walls - 3:35
 3. I Blew Up The United States - 4:02
 4. Part Time Man - 3:27
 5. I'm Living All Of My Days For You - 4:38
 6. Welcome To My Life - 3:39
 7. Why Don't You Want Me - 3:35
 8. Queenie's Groove - 1:01
 9. Let's Straighten It Out - 4:38
10. The One You Run To - 4:47
11. Don't Tear My Heart Apart - 3:19
12. Long Way Down - 4:28
13. Fudge Brownie - 2:41

The Boneshakers, you might say, are a danceable roots rock version of Steely Dan -- two songwriters/instrumentalists/vocalists (Randy Jacobs and Sweet Pea Atkinson) compose tart, biting songs and perform them with ensembles of guest musicians, some bearing impressive credentials (in this case, critical fave Jon Butcher among them). Jacobs and Atkinson had previously worked together with Was (Not Was); individually, they've collaborated with everyone from Elton John and Coolio to Iggy Pop and Ofra Haza. But even down to its title, their debut album, Book of Spells, seems to promise just slightly more voodoo than it actually delivers. It opens with the James Brown warhorse "Cold Sweat," later revisits Was (Not Was)' twisted, oddly graceful "I Blew up the United States," and concludes with the fluffy and tasty funk vamp "Fudge Brownie." But the journey between isn't exactly crammed full of memorable moments. The roadhouse blues "Part Time Man," the ballad "Let's Straighten It Out," and other tracks such as "The One You Run To" might be pleasant enough, authentic grooves, but there are no great songs on this album.

The Nobby Reed Project - Live at The Harpoon BBQ Fest-July 24,2005

10. Condition Blue - 6:33
11. Poor Man's Blues - 7:14
12. Nobby's Boogie - 2:54
13. Good Times - 6:07

After paying his dues in the relative obscurity of the Northeastern U.S. bar scene for many years, recording and performing in a host of different bands, he released his first solo CD in 1997 to critical acclaim. "Guitar on My Back" was listed by Blues Revue Magazine as one of the top ten CDs listened to in the office by their staff. Reed hit the road with his own band and the Nobby Reed Project was born. This CD captures Nobby Reed in a tremendous, live setting performing some of his top material. This is a very generous offering, as it serves up well over seventy minutes of blues that smoke and smolder, yet it retains a satisfying degree of control.

As a veteran of the North American blues and folk circuits, he engages audiences with captivating songs, diverse guitar styling and his signature vocal growl. Rick’s storied career has seen him working in stellar collaboration and as a successful solo act.  First gaining attention as part of the legendary Jackson Delta, he’s since released four solo albums, another with his own Rick Fines trio, and a critically acclaimed disc with fellow troubadour, Suzie Vinnick.  Along the way he has racked up both awards and accolades.  His 15-year stint with Jackson Delta received both Juno and Handy award nominations.  His partnership with Suzie garnered a Maple Blues Songwriter of the Year Award.  On his own, he’s pulled in two more Maple Blues Awards (for Solo Act of the Year), as well as an astonishing eight other nominations.  While his songwriting chops won him a 2003 International Songwriting Competition, he’s equally proficient on guitar – having played for legendary blues piano player Pinetop Perkins, songstress Colleen Peterson, folk icon Penny Lang, and many others.  Equally at home alone at the microphone or leading a stage of fellow players, Rick has performed everywhere from the National Gallery and Governor General’s Garden Party to Montreal Jazz, Ottawa BluesFest, the Edmonton Folk Festival, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. International tour highlights include visits to France, Italy, Scotland, Newfoundland, BC’s Gulf Islands, and the Northern Arctic. Rick believes in the transformative power of music.  When not performing, he can be found teaching and sharing with students across Canada – including work with the Blues In The Schools programs in Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto, and Yellowknife.  He’s also participated in the Ontario Arts Council’s Artists in Education program.

Bill Thomas, a preacher's son originally from Texas, now resident in Paris, is a born bluesman. His roots being in the great Blues tradition of the South. Both men of native American blood, Bill Thomas and Jimi Hendrix have one or two things in common. Both favour a 'power trio'. Bill, like Jimi, composes, plays lead, and sings his own unique brand of the Blues. Proud to claim such influences as Buddy Guy, Lightnin' Hopkins, Freddie King, Bukka White and Otis Rush, with a dash of JMH, Bill Thomas is difficult to label.
Without doubt Bill is a luminary in a new wave of Blues Greats! A combination of accomplished tradition, with memorable originality. It should come as no surprise, that he once shared a house with the late and great guitarist, Roy Buchanon. On arrival in Europe, the magazine 'Soulbag' described Bill Thomas as a "fiery and most exciting guitarist". Just the start of many glowing tributes as Bill familiarised himself with a succession of appreciative European venues.

Always drawn to constant sound (which I remember before birth) I started playing piano at 3 (the piano got burned) and so took up guitar at the age of 7 - it was my connection to better things. I used tape loops and while at school played in punk bands in the north west UK in 1977 on the same bill as Echo and the Bunneymen. In "The Fellmen" our sound was very "Can" before many had heard of them (before the Stone Roses) we recorded & played gigs in Liverpool. Our drummer left to work on a new song and ended up on the radio in James - with "Sit Down" hi Dave :)
This took me into writing Song Albums & Ambient Albums to a period with my 3 Piece a rock project which played gigs in Oxford, Reading, London. I continued creating ambient music such as on Psychic Flying from 1997s Message From The Stars Album and Outstation which I then extended into Personal Self Healing (MemoryLoss - Childhood Trauma) & then for others - this is my Crystal Singing Bowls work. I perform in Crystal Caverns in Europe, Rock Venues and Art Exhibitions. Previously at UK Festivals such as Womad.

Patrik Jansson Band - IV

Tracks Listing:
 1. She Ain t Gonna Come Back Any More - 5:00

 5. She Said What? - 3:50
 6. Play Me Some Blues - 4:24
 7. Someone Who Treats You Right - 4:53
 8. Only The Lonely - 4:32

Patrik Jansson, singer, guitar player, drummer, composer and producer, was born in the small town of Gävle in the middle of Sweden. He started playing drums at an early age and in his early twenties he moved to Stockholm to study music and pursue a career in the music business. He also started playing piano, bass and guitar and got more and more into songwriting and playing the blues.
Patrik Jansson Band was formed in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden in late 2007. After playing drums in various blues bands and jazz combos, hard-rock and metal acts for several years, Patrik decided it was time for another challenge. He picked up the guitar and started playing and singing in hopes of developing as a songwriter and a musician. “I’ve always loved to learn new things” he says. With a passion for heavy Texas blues and with a new mission in life he started looking for musicians to play with. “I had a pretty clear idea of what I was looking for” he says, “I wanted to play blues with a more modern approach. Blues is supposed to feel fresh and alive, it’s a most vital music in my opinion. In short I wanted to play the kind of music that I would like to hear myself and that I think a lot of other people would like and appreciate”. In the beginning of 2011 PJB released their self-titled critically acclaimed debut album on the Sneaky Foot Records label and they played extensively all over Sweden. The music could best be described as a mix of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter and Buddy Guy to name a few of the early influences. After some line-up changes it was time to start writing songs for the follow up to the debut album and in late 2013 the band entered the studio to record “Here We Are” (2014) their second full length album. With guest appearances from Mikael Fall (harmonica world champion 2013) and the great Swedish female blues singer Lisa Lystam, “Here We Are” is an album full of great songs and great performances. Blues News, Germany wrote, ”Yes, this CD has style, charm, that certain something and if someone asked me for track to play, I would say: play the whole album! Again and again!”. Blues News, Norway rated the record 5 out of 6 and the American Blues Blast Magazine wrote, ”Patrik Jansson Band announces “Here We Are” with as much vigor as the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan”.
2015 it was time for another lineup change when drummer Martin Forsstedt, bass player Thomas Andersson and organ player Gustaf Andersson joined the band and late 2016 they hit the studio to record So Far To Go. The wide range of the new material was a clear statement that PJB didn ́t have any limitations for their music and following their own recipe they once again proved that they knew what they were doing. The album is full of melodic blues and blues-rock where influences of classic Chicago and Texas blues like the music of B.B. King and Freddie King is fused with the more modern soul, blues and blues-rock of Robert Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonamassa. It was released in august 2017 and once again the critics were delighted. Blues Blast Magazine, U.S.A. wrote ”Guitar based rock and blues-rock doesn’t get any better than this. From the high energy cuts to the slow pensive moods this music deserves to be heard.” and Blues Magazine, Netherlands wrote ”There is just no bad song on this album. Only high quality bluesrock!”. ABS Magazine, Franc ”This singer, guitarist, composer and producer of Swedish origin has an indisputable talent to play the blues” and BluesNews, Germany gave the album 5/6 saying ”Now, Jansson has delivered the sequel to "So Far To Go" and I'm just as excited as then. Why? Because he once again made his version of the classic Freddie and B.B King just like the followers Robert Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonamassa”. So Far To Go got a lot of airplay on radio in U.S.A, Australia, U.K. Italy, Spain and Poland. 2018 PJB completed their second successful European tour and a did several festival appearances, including one at the Grolsch Blues festival which was recorded and broadcasted nation wide by the German Deutschlandfunk radio. In 2019 Gustaf Andersson was replaced by Lars Ericsson, a piano player with extensive jazz and blues background giving the band a more sophisticated sound and it was time once again to enter the studio to record the fourth album simply titeld IV released October 2, 2020. Once again the focus has been on great song writing with melodies and arrangements aimed to capture the listener, but this time there´s been a more scaled down approach to the arrangements with no horn or string sections added. The goal was to make a more live sounding album like the classic heavy blues albums of Albert King and Buddy Guy but mixed with influences of contemporary blues masters like Joe Bonamassa, Walter Tout, Jeff Healey, Robben Ford and Gary Moore. The result is a music feast for fans of electric blues, blues-rock, Chicago blues & heavy contemporary blues.

The songs for this album were written between Fall 2019 and the Spring of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic certainly gave me unexpected extra time to complete the tracks!
Playing drums on half of the tracks is Jason Patterson from North Carolina, original drummer for Cry of Love. Jason has played on many of my studio albums since 2013. The other half of the tracks were played by Walfredo Reyes Jr., who has a long list of credits that include Santana, Traffic, Steve Winwood and is currently the drummer for Chicago. Fortunately, Walfredo moved to the Cincinnati area late last year.
The bass guitar duties were handled by Kasey Williams, with my old Seattle partner-in-crime John Kessler playing on ‘Goin’ Away Baby’ (his idea to do that song) and ‘The End Of The Blues.’ John is one of the blues’ most learned scholars, helming the Puget Sound’s KNKX All Blues show for the last 20 years. John’s guidance and expert bass playing skills have been invaluable to my blues rock songwriting development.
My daughter Ashley Charmae was quarantined with me and my wife for more than three months, and sings backing vocals on many of the songs, and takes the lead vocal on ‘Relentless,’ which we wrote together. It was great having her around the house!
The title track ‘Cosmic Radio’ was written while vacationing in the Bahamas, along with ‘Hey Hey Hey,’ written on the same night! There’s something about the Bahamas that spurs my creativity.
Maybe it’s the weed? ‘Cosmic Radio’ is about keeping your mind open to new possibilities and points of view – tune into the “frequency of the unknown” and let your imagination loose! And of course, it’s also a love song – because you can find love if you let yourself!
‘Left In The Dust’ is a rocker I wrote after I bought a new fuzz pedal (an Analogman Sunface NKT for the guitar geeks). The opening riff just oozed out of that thing! The narrative is one of frustration about someone who lets too many opportunities pass by and fear of failure keeps them from trying new things. I wanted this song to have a lot of energy – the kind of song you might place first on the set list.
‘The Devil’ is a song I wrote when my Parisian friend Manu Lanvin visited me in Cincinnati. He calls his band the Devil Blues, and I wrote that with him in mind. I wanted it to be upbeat, fun and about temptation!
‘Relentless’ is the first song that I wrote with my daughter Ashley Charmae. She loves old blues singers like Etta James, Ray Charles and Billie Holliday and I think she was channeling some of that energy into the melody and lyrics. She really shines on this and I am quite proud of her!
The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting shutdown of the live music industry was a real blow to the solar plexus. ‘I’m A Believer’ is about the frustration I was feeling, but the chorus had to have a positive note: “If you’re talking love baby, I’m a believer.” The silver lining was getting to spend a lot of quality time with my beautiful wife and family.
The album ends with a piano ballad, ‘I Will Always Love You,’ and I was on the fence whether to include it on this album as it is different from most of my songs. But I felt it was strong enough to be heard. It’s the first song I have written on piano, having just acquired one last year.
A friend of my father’s was downsizing from a big house into a condo, and he wanted someone “in the family” to take it. It’s an interesting story, built in Hamburg Germany during WWII, it’s all original and part of the keyboard sticks, so I avoided those keys. But it has this aged, grandiose vibe, and I think there are many more songs in that thing! I love the way Ashley Charmae’s backing vocals takes the composition to a whole new level.
