If you owned a blues club and insisted that you would only book hardcore blues purists, you would miss out on a lot of talented people. That's because so many of the artists playing the blues circuit in the 21st century have other influences -- perhaps rock, perhaps soul, perhaps jazz. All of those things have influenced James Solberg, who is essentially a bluesman but is far from a purist. Those who expect everything a bluesman records to have 12 bars are bound to find One of These Days disappointing, but more eclectic and broad-minded listeners will find a lot to admire about this German release, which finds the charming singer embracing everything from moody, Bobby "Blue" Bland-ish soul-blues (&"One of These Days," "Everyday") to exuberant blues-rock ("One False Move," "Too Damn Much Lovin'"). Solberg's performance of "Do You Call That a Buddy?" recalls the blues-jazz of the 1930s and 1940s, and his own "Litehouse Keeper" is a Southern soul item that takes us back to a time when Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas, and Wilson Pickett were all over R&B radio. Overall, One of These Days is quite solid. The only disappointing track is a surprisingly lackluster version of Sir Mack Rice's "Cheaper to Keep Her," which was a major hit for the late soulster Johnnie Taylor (as opposed to bluesman Little Johnny Taylor) in the early 1970s. Solberg should have soared on this track, but, for whatever reason, he drops the ball. Most of the time, however, One of These Days turns out to be a rewarding and welcome addition to Solberg's catalog.

10. Train Done Gone - 2:33
11. Something's Gone Wrong In My Life - 2:55
12. Baby You Know It's True - 2:58

He spent two decades supporting John Lee Hooker's idiosyncratic boogie blues, and here Eddie Kirkland struck out on his own. It's his first and still his best exercise; raw, thumping, throbbing music that didn't leave the blues out of the R and B---especially "Train Done Gone" and "Man of Stone," the latter a number John Mayall would cover on "Crusade" in an affectionate if too-reverent cover. Kirkland turned out to have a heavily emotional singing style to match his shuddering guitar work and his crying harmonica here and there. With King Curtis behind the board and leading the recording aggregation (not to mention blowing some blood-curdling sax here and there) Kirkland launched his solo life with a flourish. It's a shame that this didn't catch as much fire as other offerings of the period, because Kirkland obviously had plenty enough to offer. Match this to his comeback albums on Trix in the 1970s and his scattered King and Fortune sides during the Hooker years, and you've got a very respectable legacy of very underrated blues. Kirkland's death in a February 2011 road accident was a loss; he never quit hitting the road screaming the blues, even if he recorded few sides afterward that were as powerful as these.

Ron Hacker, born in 1945, for me is one of the most compelling and honest blues men of our time. The Slide Virtuoso, who is based since long years in San Francisco is not known in vain as the ‚White Trash Blues Man. He calls in his texts clearly what touches him and his fellow man and he is not afraid before clear statements. The Baby is gone or the whiskey tastes too well, those are not his subjects. You can convince yourself by listening to the seven albums he has recorded - partly as Ron Hacker & the Hacksaws or Ron Hacker.Friends of something harder pace will be happy with the albums <Back Door Man> (2000) and <Burnin‘> (2003). For friends of solo or Club performances <Bad Boy> (2007) and ‚Live in San Francisco> (2012) is a must. Ron has occurred in all major West Coast festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival, as well as in Europe (including Germany). Unfortunately, it has not yet given the big breakthrough in our area - Ron Hacker is still an insider’s tip. Hopefully his just-released CD <‘Goin‘ Down Howlin> will change that. Ron Hacker (guit., voc.) & his Hacksaws - Artis Joyce (bass) and Ronnie Smith (drums) - engage extent on great songs of blues music. Ron contributes with the opener <Evil Hearted Woman> (acoustic) and <Big Brown Eyes> successfully own compositions that have a good chance to become classics itself. The other 9 pieces are written by Little Walter (<Hate to see you go>), Sleepy John Estes (<Ax sweet Mama>), Jimmy Reed (<Baby what you want me to do>) and others. Chuck Berry‘s <Nadine> is represented as well as Chester Burnett‘s‘ <Howling for my Darling>. Ron Hacker presents a harmonious blend of some classic popular songs on his very own, intoxicating nature.Hacker is a seasoned, mature musician far from mainstream and any image complexes. Listening to him is a great experience to see him live on stage is one of my unmet needs.

Albert Cummings - Ten

10. Alive And Breathing - 4:57
11. She's The One - 3:51
12. Got You Covered - 3:58
13. Remember - 3:56

The short-hand way to describe Albert Cummings’ Ten is the blues rocker’s gone country. But the more nuanced explanation is an artist known for blues rock has discovered depth and complexity within a new style. Cummings has always played with different musical genres. His previous album, 2020’s Believe featured soul touches like his cover of Sam & Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Coming,” but Ten is all rugged power country—even the ballads—with some nice digressions into horn-driven rhythm and blues. Cummings’ guitar is still impressive and ever-present, with plenty of twangy blues-inspired licks, but it feels much more like modern country, where the solos dazzle and then recede into the background. Without the guitar as the focal point, Cummings directs his strong vocals front-and-center, and it pays off. He’s a strong singer and while his voice won’t haunt you, he puts a lot of power and intensity behind it, making for a compelling listen. He’s not a guitar player who also sings, but a singer who also happens to be a talented guitarist. The recasting works for Cummings and for his songs.“Last Call” is fast country featuring Vince Gill. Lyrically, it’s nothing profound, with familiar country lines like, “You don’t have to go home / But you can’t stay here,” but the vibe is pure country, evoking a very specific kind of energy that’s enhanced by Cummings’ countrified guitar and rollicking piano. Country fans hearing this on a country station wouldn’t blink twice at this tune; Cummings nails the style perfectly. All of the country tracks, from the rockers to the ballads, sound authentic. This isn’t Cummings arbitrarily deciding to try on a style. He sounds committed and serious, which is why the songs work. But there are also some more soul-flavored tracks, complete with horns, that also work well. “Alive and Breathing” is hip, with a big band swing, funky bass, and tasty guitar playing. His vocals are fiery, but with a coolness that makes for a great track. “Got You Covered” explores a similar sound, an uptown blues coupled with rock bombast. Cummings throws a lot at the listener, and while the track is dense, it works. Part of the reason is a catchy melody, but it also succeeds because, while there’s so much going on, everything happening is high quality. Ten‘s cover is a simple shot of Cummings in some kind of fedora or cowboy hat, beaming. The huge smile captures the album perfectly. Cummings sounds like he’s having a great time. I have a huge amount of respect for Cummings, but I’m also not a big fan of country. And yet I can tell this is a special album. It’s strong songs and thoughtful guitar that transcends genre. Cummings sounds locked in and he seems to know it. Ten will give everyone a similar smile (https://bluesrockreview.com/2022/04/albert-cummings-ten-review.html).

"This CD is dedicated to my brothers: Tim and Barry Casey, killed by a drunk driver, august 10th 1979." Third CD for the"Big Apple" harmonica player, produced by Popa Chubby, himself. Tough and real, Mason plays with attitude and class. With Mason Casey, there are no Harmonica Blues cliches, just straight, sharp, heavy modern blues.Casey's music is modern, vibrant, and exciting 21st Century Blues. In other words, the sort of Blues that makes you proud to be a Blues enthusiast. It's definately not the dreary sort of 'laid back' blues that you can relax to. However, if you want something to keep you awake on those long motorway runs, this may just do the trick.

Guitar virtuoso Scott Holt first came to national prominence as part of various high energy bands led by legendary Chicago blues guitarist and singer Buddy Guy. He was just 23 when Guy took him under his wing and taught him how to travel intelligently while accommodating the rigorous nature of blues touring. Holt stayed with Guy on the road and in the recording studio for a decade, earning his post-graduate education with one of the true blues guitar masters.
Holt was raised in Tennessee, and hearing Jimi Hendrix for the first time proved to be a revelatory moment in his life. His parents bought him a guitar for Christmas when he was 12. Like a lot of kids, he took piano lessons, because he had to, but he quit after six months. He didn't get serious about playing the instrument until he was 19, when his parents bought him an electric guitar. When he was 20, his father took him to hear Buddy Guy one night. That night, he met Guy and got an improvised guitar lesson from the master. He would frequently sit in with Guy on stage when he was touring around Nashville. One day in 1989, Guy called Holt out of the blue and asked him to join his touring band.
Holt began writing his own songs while on the road with Guy and eventually began to record his songs, back home in Nashville, during breaks from Guy's international touring schedule.
In a record company biography accompanying "Dark of the Night," his first nationally distributed recording, Holt argues: "Every genre has its purists, but blues doesn't start and stop with Muddy Waters." Indeed, through the 1990's and into the new millennium, Holt and his various touring bands have been expanding the parameters of the form, and thanks to his decade on the road with Guy, he's been able to share stages and learn from the likes of Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Albert Collins, Jack Bruce, Carlos Santana and Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora.
Holt's albums under his own name, which showcase his abilities as a songwriter and singer as well as his fiery, passionate, high energy guitar playing, include his debut, "Messing with the Kid," in 1998, "Dark of the Night," a 1999 release for Mystic Music, "Chipped Front Tooth," for Lightyear Entertainment in 2003, and "From Lettsworth to Legend: A Tribute to Buddy Guy."
More recently, he's released "Angels in Exile" for Blue Storm Music in 2001 and "Revelator" for Rockview in late 2005. Holt continues to tour the U.S. and Canada.

Subsequently, Turner joined the group Zephyr as a guitarist  but after the death of the singer Candy Givens  he abandoned music to work in real-estate in Denver. 10 years later, Turner agreed to join the Ron Miles electric band.  3. So Many Roads -  6:30
 4. Privileged Life - 11:30
 5. Mr. Blues -  8:21
 6. My Soul's On Fire -  8:23

Musicians:
Eddy Turner - guitars, vocals
Jimmy Trujillo - bass
Recard 'Scotty' Rivera - drums, backing vocals

After Live At The Triple Door and Live At The New Orleans Rhede in 2007, the American guitar magician completes the threesome with this album. A concert recording can hardly be published any more up-to-date, because the CD was already available for sale for the 2008 autumn tour. These in-house productions have increased demand and corresponding sales. So what advantages does this disc offer?
On the one hand it was recorded as a trio. Turner teasingly refers to his two backing musicians as the 'Trouble Twins', meaning bassist Jimmy Trujillo and Recard 'Scotty' Rivera on drums.
On the other hand, there are three of the six songs that have not yet been featured on any studio album: "Blues Fall Down Like Rain", "Mr. Blues" and "My Soul's On Fire". Turner trademarks that are always popular are of course also present. An almost quarter-hour "Rise", seven and a half minutes "So Many Roads" and the overly long "Privileged Life". So the numbers aren't made out of cardboard and so the playing time increases to an enjoyable 56 minutes. Eddie Turner accompanied by a trio is something special. The intensity of his guitar processing comes into its own in every track. This is how it crystallizes what the devil boy does on the guitar and he can rely on a crisp rhythm section on his instrumental excursions. Jimmy Truijllo has been his regular bass player for a long time and the drummer also makes for joy in front of the speakers with his differentiated drumming. Every fan of this genre wishes for a statement like the one made in the first track of the record: "Blues Fall Down Like Rain". Turner sings the lyrics almost in an incantation, and the repetitive sequence of tones from the guitar and bass have a hypnotic character. This is how you convert a title line to music. Up to a break and what then rains down on the listener is a bottleneck storm, for which you don't need any protection. Trujillo and Rivera continue to stoically enchant and Turner, after a long slide excursion, reports back on the ground of the song topic. One can already be curious about the studio version of the composition. It should be clear that you can already hear a more detailed version here. In "Rise" Trujillo is almost three minutes solo on his five-sided work machine and his rhythm buddy brings it to just under one and a half minutes. It feels like going it alone is longer...Resistance is useless against "Privileged Life". If the song doesn't get you going, then I don't know what will. Compared to the "... Triple Door" edition, the thing has grown by another 2 minutes. Where are they? Clearly, Turner can't help it and so to speak blisters on his fingers. An individual performance that can hardly be surpassed in terms of furiosity, until he gently lands again on the so catchy sequence of notes. "Mr. Blues" is another new track and it starts off very subdued. Bass and drums only set a very small beat and then this piece of 12 bars rises to the top with a great solo by the guitarist, who is almost exclusively active at the upper end of the fretboard. Partly breathed singing without 6-string. It goes on quietly, Turner only plays a few, but great licks and again and again you think: Here we go! But it doesn't get to that point of eruption and that's exactly why there's a lot of tension in the piece. Things get quieter, Rivera and Trujillo say goodbye and Turner finishes the act all by himself. A gem of live music. With "My Soul's On Fire" the hut burns again, even if there is a relaxed interlude in it. This track is the best Blues Rock with a not to be scoffed at portion of what was also good in the 70's. All in all, this live fare cannot be dismissed from the edge of the table and, like the two previous in-house productions, meets the quality standard of an excellent concert insight.(https://www.rocktimes.info/Archiv/gesamt/t/eddie_turner/live_at_heritage.html)

Billy Seward's musical identity is the tale of 2 cities. Beginning in Chicago, with the West Side Blues masters Otis Rush and Magic Sam being the original inspirational source, then heading due south a days ride to Memphis, where the pulsing driving rhythm's and horn counterpoints of Hi Record's section drove singers like O.V Wright, Otis Clay, Syl Johnson and of course Al Green to the highest of high's. From the moment Billy heard Otis Clay singing in a small Chicago North side club, he was hooked and followed that musical trail down to Memphis. At a time when rock blues guitar seems to define what blues is to many, Billy brings his voice to the front with a rich blend of deep soul and big city blues, paired with the crisp clear bite of the West side drenched blues guitar, a combination that can both excite and soothe but will always satisfy.
