"To kick off the night, the local Michael Russell Trio (with Russell on guitar/vocals; Ben Colbeck, bass; Garrett Smart, drums/vocals) played a brand of electric blues that drew on such forebears and contemporary artists as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pat Travers and Gary Clark Jr. The trio laid down a selection of Fender Stratocaster-fueled jams that at times emulated their influences and occasionally ascended into moments that revealed their own perspective on how to rock the blues. Russell’s guitar playing effectively exploited the tonal variations to be be wrung from an electric guitar by way of subtle, crafty manipulations of the tone and volume knobs with his pinky finger while playing. The surprise high point for this rocker was when drummer/singer Garrett Smart took over vocals for a cover of Elton John’s classic “Saturday Night’s Alright (for Fighting),” which gave Russell a chance to cut loose with a rocking solo that drew revelers off their seats and onto the dance floor."

1989: at a local high-school in Haacht, Belgium – about 20 miles north-east of Brussels – brothers Frederic & Philippe Martello team up with Kris Bries to kick-start The Blue Chevy’s. As reflected in the name of the band, it shows their initial fondness for vintage rock & roll and neo-rockabilly. Whilst other members join and leave, it’s clear that the sound and direction of the band is defined by the Martello-Bries trio. They quickly get some local recognition from local venues and start building up their live repertoire. Having the opportunity to play at the recognized Swing Blues Festival (BE), they get inspired by the Texas Shuffle and Jump blues as they share the stage with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Paul Lamb and Mike Morgan. A change of direction, as they start to integrate these styles in their existing R&R set. It proves to be a successful cocktail as they get booked for nearly every festival or venue in Belgium and the Netherlands in the following years. In 2003, they have the opportunity to work with Filip Casteels, recognized guitar player of the band El Fish. Under his wings, The Blue Chevys releases its first album “Motel Birdcage”. The raw enthusiasm and fresh sound on that album is well-received and leads to some impressing appearances at the largest Blues festivals in Belgium and the Netherlands.

12. Don't Come Back (Bonus Track) - 3:10

The Outer Reach is the third studio album from the London based Albany Down. Paul Turley, Donna Peters, Paul Muir and Billy Dedman have fused into a very tight and powerful band with their own sound and style of rockin’ Blues in the best British tradition. Produced by Greg Haver and recorded at Modern World Studios, The Outer Reach is their best album yet. The album opens with the epic “Feeding the Flame.” It’s soulful blend of Zeppelin, Bad Company and Deep Purple but with a very modern aesthetic sets you up nicely for the entire listening experience. Peters and Dedman hold down the groove while Turley’s guitar and Muir’s vocal simply soar.  The band shifts gears a bit with the horn drenched “Supersonic Girl.” The groove is so tight that it would make Tower of Power proud. “Mr. Hangman” with it’s dark lyrical theme has a slight southern rock vibe but grooves a lot harder than Skynyrd ever did. The ultra melodic power rock of “Home” will have audiences singing a long with their lighters swaying above their heads. “The Drop” is a bad ass riff with face melting guitar work from Turley and a power house vocal performance from Muir.
A lot of current blues based rock bands opt for a low-fi sound with fuzzy guitars and distorted vocals etc… Albany Down takes the complete opposite approach. Greg Haver’s larger than life production style screams “Albany Down is the biggest band ever!” And in a perfect world they would be. Albany Down has done something unique. They have embraced their influences in a very overt way, while at the same time carving out a sound and vibe all their own. The Outer Reach contains zero filler. It is simply one great track after another. If putting out records packed with great songs and stellar performances makes you “retro” then Albany Down is guilty as charged.

Bill Wharton, aka "The Sauce Boss," takes a novel approach to blues performing, combining his love of cooking with his passion for gutsy guitar playing and singing. Wharton, who cooks up gumbo while on stage, is no flash in the pan, nor is his live act meant as some kind of cheap gimmickry; he is simply combining two things he's always loved to do: play music and cook dinner. Known mostly for his live shows around Florida, where he sells his own homemade Liquid Summer Hot Sauce, Wharton has been fortunate in recent years to take his act to France, where he received rave reviews. By no means a straight-ahead blues player, the guitarist, singer and songwriter's recordings are a rootsy mix of blues, classic R&B and rockabilly-flavored tunes. Wharton's albums for the Sanford, Fla.-based Kingsnake label include The Sauce Boss (1989), South of the Blues (1994) and Standing in the Fire (1996). He also recorded an album for the Atlanta-based Ichiban label in 1992, Cookin'. All of Wharton's albums reflect his eclectic tastes and include R&B tunes, roots-rock, swamp pop numbers, Delta blues, calypso and zydeco music. While Wharton doesn't take himself seriously, he does take his music very seriously, and he deserves to be heard by a wider audience.

16. I Can't Understand It - 2:39
17. Eat Where You Slept Last Night - 3:57
18. Swingin' For Four Bills - 6:20

The title of Duke Robillard’s new album may use the past tense, but make no mistake: These old-school sounds – swinging and jumping, earthy and elegant – remain very much alive on the guest-laden They Called It Rhythm & Blues out March 18 via Stony Plain Records with guests including John Hammond, Kim Wilson, Sue Foley, Sugar Ray Norcia and others. That’s no surprise. Since Robillard helped found Roomful of Blues in the 1960s, he has been the leading torch-bearer for this vibrant music that eventually morphed into rock-and-roll. The guitar master and his usual ace band provide the musical base here, and they come out swinging, literally and figuratively, on the horn-fueled “Here I’m Is” by Chuck Higgins. It’s one of six numbers featuring full-throated band vocalist Chris Cote, whose centerpiece is a show-stopping rendition of “Someday After Awhile,” a blues ballad first recorded by Big Joe Turner and later covered by Eric Clapton, among others. The way the guitar solo plays off the piano, and the baritone sax coloring throughout, typifies the rich musical interplay at work on the 18-song set. The guests begin showing up on Track 2. Blues firebrand Sue Foley is the perfectly suited foil as she duets with Robillard on a rambunctious take on the old Mickey and Sylvia number “No Good Lover,” with Foley’s partner, Mike Flanigin, contributing an organ solo. Kim Wilson, Robillard’s old mate in the Fabulous Thunderbirds, revives two of his own T-Birds numbers. He slashes his way through the hard-hitting “Tell Me Why,” punctuated by his wailing harmonica, while “The Things I Forgot to Do” rolls along on an easy New Orleans groove and piano triplets. Another noted harmonica man, Sugar Ray Norcia, gets to pay tribute to his hero Big Walter Horton on a stinging rendition of Tampa Red’s “Rambler Blues,” and he exudes some finger-snapping flair on Jimmy Nelson’s “She’s My Baby.” John Hammond gets the blues part of the R&B equation down to its grittiest with Bessie Smith’s “Homeless Blues” and Howling Wolf’s “No Place to Go.” Heard too little lately, Michelle Willson makes her mark belting her way through the propulsive “Champagne Mind,” by Effie Smith, and helping to give a world-weary, late-night ambience to the blues standard “Trouble in Mind,” expertly accented by an acoustic guitar solo and trumpet. Robillard of course contributes impeccable guitar throughout, his playing mixing taste and bite. He doesn’t sing much here, but again shows that his voice makes up in color and character what he might lack in lung power, whether he’s delivering a kiss-off in his own rollicking “Outta Here,” offering sage advice in a swinging take of Zuzu Bollin’s “Eat Where You Slept Last Night,” or playing off Foley on the aforementioned “No Good Lover.” Foley and Flanigin return for “Swinging for Four Bills,” which Robillard says is a tribute to Bill Jennings, Bill Doggett, Wild Bill Davis, and Billy Butler. The six-minute-plus instrumental closes the album on a note of jazzy elegance. It highlights Robillard’s versatility as it ends another album reaffirming that, when it comes to classic rhythm and blues today, Duke is really the king.

Born March 15, 1961 in Birmingham, Alabama, USA Charlie Terrell is both a true and renegade musical son of the American South, an artistic raconteur and provocateur, and the singer, songwriter and ringleader of the Austin, Texas-based crooked blues'n'roots band The Murdered Johns. A recovering major label recording artist with three acclaimed albums and countless road miles to his credit, Terrell is also an accomplished and collected painter, noted playwright, and creator of innovative concert video designs for major musical tours, among other talents and pursuits. Within his music one hears all the soulful richness of a world-weary traveler as well as the potent cultural traditions and contradictions of his Southern heritage. That all finds its apotheosis on Alabama Steampunk Blues, the rough-and-ready debut of visionary neo-traditionalism by Charlie Terrell & The Murdered Johns, whose membership includes noted rockabilly guitarist Danny B. Harvey, the longtime Austin blue-ribbon country and roots rhythm section of drummer Tom Lewis and bassist Brad Fordham, and Dixie-fried blues harp player Greg Izor. The album was recorded virtually live, all of them playing together in one room in quick and simmering sessions at Austin's Premium Recording Service. The disc showcases what All Music Guide has praised as Terrell's talents as "a playful, creative songwriter" as well as his expressive whiskey-burnished singing and singularly imaginative notion of real and rooted Southern American musical traditions retooled for the modern age. Spotlighting his savvy as a "Straight Shooter on a Crooked Road," as the title of one song declares, it's set of songs romp like a Saturday night shin-dig ("The Bottle Flies," "Shadow Loves A Sun" and "Straight Shooter..."), get down'n'dirty ("There She Go" and "Redneck Gigolo") and sexily shuffle and jump ("Bottom of the Pool" and "She Got The Fire'). Terrell creatively reworks John Prine's witty look at the music business, "Onomatapoeia," and has the band show its fiery instrumental stuff with Izor and Harvey cutting loose on "Box Cutter Rag." And it all wraps up with a back to the future ragtime paean to Terrell's home state on the title track "Alabama Steampunk Blues." The sum of the album's many intriguing parts is an utterly original, inventive take on the blues that's like nothing else out there. Terrell was born in the deep heart of the South in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in the small town of Albertville on Sand Mountain, a swath in the northeastern corner of the state where snake handling and sacred harp singing are still found in the churches, and is also known as "Meth Mountain" for the darker side of life there. His first brush with fame came as a youth when the local paper reported "Boy Bitten by Vampire Bat." Couple all that with the longtime Southern struggle between the sacred and profane, and the music Terrell creates seems utterly natural if not fated for him to write and perform, even if he did grow up in an educated and relatively prosperous family, son of a banker father and schoolteacher mother. His first guitar was hand built by the husband of the Black nanny that helped raise his father, soon followed by another given him by his grandmother, an Elvis Presley fan who encouraged Terrell's musical leanings and coached him on stage moves. Lessons didn't quite take as he ended up composing his own songs rather than doing scales and exercises, largely because his low register voice made it hard for him to sing the songs he liked on the radio and his 45 rpm record collection. His mother encouraged his artistic inclinations, which led to Terrell's parallel career as a painter and visual artist. "Music was a hobby, but I noticed that if I learned Eagles songs all the girls would come around, and they loved it," he recalls. An older friend he met in his mid-teens while working as a ticket taker at the local movie theater mentored Terrell in cool music. "He had bootlegs of Dylan and Springsteen. He turned me on to all this stuff: Here's Blood on the Tracks and here's Born To Run. Here's Warren Zevon, John Prine, Lou Reed." And of course a kid couldn't grow up south of Mason-Dixon without the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd being a central musical element of his experience.
His early stabs at recording include a song Terrell wrote that was used in his high school's senior play. His father hooked him up through connections to play his songs for guitarist Jimmy Johnson of the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studios rhythm section. "He said, Your stuff is too much like poetry.' I was insulted at the time, but the further I got into the business, the more I realized he was right on," notes Terrell. While in line to register at Auburn University to study architecture and fine arts, Terrell switched gears and bolted, winding up instead at Belmont College in Nashville studying recording and the music business. There he met Richard Smith, aka Hawk, a talented multi-instrumental musician, disc jockey and studio engineer. The two eventually dropped out to tour the south as a duo, finally landing a regular gig on the resort island of Hilton Head off the coast near Savannah. They then headed back to Nashville to form a new wave band that was part of the city's burgeoning rock scene in the early 1980s. "I was just experimenting with all kinds of things to see what worked," Terrell explains. He finally headed to Los Angeles where "the shock of being Southern in California brought me back to my roots." He summoned Hawk to join him, and his pal landed an engineering gig at the noted Studio 56, where they were able to find like-minded players, track demos, and put together a band that began making waves on the local scene. At the same time Terrell was busily painting and exhibiting and selling his artwork. After a gig at The China Club, Terrell was simultaneously approached by music business heavyweights Irving Azoff and Miles Copeland. Signing with the former's Giant Records and inking with the latter for management, the group that became simply known as Terrell recorded the 1990 album On the Wings of Dirty Angels, which featured guest background vocals by Graham Nash and was hailed by Billboard as a "surprising and thoroughly delightful album." It launched the band on a long round of touring and won them an appearance in the film Rush performing the classic blues numbers "Wang Dang Doodle" and "Baby Scratch My Back." The song "Bitter" from the album was also later featured in the soundtrack to the movie Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead.Terrell was enjoying an upward career trajectory on album radio and a burgeoning rep as a blazing live act. But it all ground to a halt when the band's equipment truck was hijacked in Dallas, their label A&R rep was fired, and the group split with Copeland just as the making of a second album was about to get underway. The band splintered, and for the next few years Terrell took a hiatus from performing and drifted through the L.A. underworld while continuing to paint and write music, contributing two original songs to the 1994 film noir The Last Seduction.
Playing his compositions one night at a party, Terrell caught the ear of producer and guitarist Greg Poree, whose credits include playing with many top Motown stars and the likes of James Brown, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Albert King, Issac Hayes and a host of others. He helped Terrell land a new record deal with Pointblank/Virgin Records, which in 1995 released Angry Southern Gentleman, hailed as "gritty, brash, soulful roots rock" by All Music Guide. He and his band toured North America and Europe with Joan Osborne, The Neville Brothers, G. Love & Special Sauce and Ian Moore. Terrell followed up the next year with Beautiful Side of Madness, an album infused with the yin/yang whirlwind of being in a working band that All Music Guide described as "down and dirty... raw, bluesy roots rock with lyrics that tend to be smarter than you might expect from this genre [and a] backstreet energy and gritty sound." It included a duet with Osborne on the title track, and Terrell hit the road with Gov't Mule even before its release as label support for the band began to wane even as Terrell's positive press notices continued to build. A third album Terrell recorded for the company, Taking The Jesus Pill, was rejected for falling outside the blues rubric of the Pointblank imprint, and he parted ways with Virgin. The disc remains unreleased, but its concept and music were later resurrected as one of his greatest artistic triumphs. Taking another break from making music full time, he landed a job as a graphic artist while recording more music and releasing it on his own, including 3 Links in a Broken Chain, a rumination on love and loss following the untimely passing of his pal and musical compatriot Hawk from a drug overdose. Meanwhile Terrell's songs continued to resonate in films and on TV. "Hopeful Sinner" and "Black and White Blues" from Beautiful Side of Madness were tapped for two episodes of the series Homicide: Life on the Street, while "Redneck Gigolo" from Angry Southern Gentleman (and revisited on Alabama Steampunk Blues) was featured in the movie Poolhall Junkies (in which Terrell appeared as a guitar player in the club band playing the song). The intro to his song "Wicked Ways" was used in 3000 Miles to Graceland, and he also co-wrote the independent short film Destiny Stalled and composed songs for its soundtrack. Meanwhile Taking the Jesus Pill - which originated with a Terrell short story exploring the Southern conundrum between the sin and salvation - evolved into a multimedia theatrical play presented at the Hollywood club King King. It was praised as "the most subversively entertaining show in town" by The Los Angeles Times, which noted, "If Flannery O'Connor and Bob Fosse joined Creedence Clearwater Revival on a road trip, the results might resemble Taking the Jesus Pill." Attending one of its early performances was Polly Parsons, daughter of cosmic American music pioneer and legend Gram Parsons. Duly impressed, she signed on as the play's executive producer and recruited Terrell to provide video backdrops for the star-studded concert and DVD salute to her father, Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons. The two started dating and eventually married, and together founded Daddy Van Productions, which provides concert video design for tours by such musical acts as Motley Crue, ZZ Top, Dave Matthews Band, Toby Keith, Rascal Flatts, Reba McEntire and others. The couple and their daughter Harper Lee relocated to Austin, Texas in 2008.

Full of energy, with a new tour and with a new album, Julian Sas and his band are on the eve of a new phase in their successful career. For the new album ‘Electracoustic‘ his emotions were the inspiration for the songs. An unusual title for a special album because the album contains 2 sets of 12 new songs: 1 time in the electric version and 1 time in the acoustic version.

Bubba & The Big Bad Blues is a formation of an excellent guitarist and vocalist (Christopher "Bubba" Clerc) and musicians (drummer Jason JR Lozano, bassist Doug Mug Swanson, hammonjist Sammy Avila) fascinated by the sound of a blues-rock band. There is a lot of fascination with the tradition of Freddie King, but also inspiration from the popular band Gov't Mule. The album "Drifting" is diverse, but kept in the correct convention of strong, rock blues and fits perfectly into today's understanding of such sound.

Lara Price is a smoldering, sexy blues diva with a great voice in the blues and R & B traditions. She and her former guitarist Laura Chavez form a dynamic duo on this CD, which features mostly original Price & Chavez compositions as well as renditions of older classics. Stevie Ray Vaughn fans will immediately recognize his influence on Laura Chavez, who at the tender age of 24 has become something of a legend in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her version of "Little Wing" is pretty special.
