Sometimes life is really hard! Singer-songwriter Rob Hendrikse experienced that when he was diagnosed with “terminal lung cancer” in May 2023. After he had processed this diagnosis, there was one thing high on his bucket list. He really wanted to release his own songs on vinyl. And with the help of crowdfunding, he has now done just that!
Rob Hendrikse played around 1000 shows since 2009, also with his Hendrikse Xperience. His album ‘A Good Day For The Blues’ from 2021 (with Rob Orlemans) was nominated for a Dutch Blues CD Award that same year.
And now a double album with songs from 2016 to the present. Of course, given the circumstances, this album has become a very impressive album. An album on which Rob sounds alternately subdued and fragile but also powerful (blues) rocking. Rob opens the album with the languid Warren Zevon-like rocker The Outlaw Song with his lived-in dark voice and biting, piercing guitar work. Your Arms Will Keep Me Warm is then a warm, swaying number with a roaring blues harmonica. The Ballad Of A Damned Man is an example of one of the penetrating ballads on this album.
The most impressive ballad is Like A Railroad. A country rock ballad with a Wild Horses (Stones)-like atmosphere. Rob sings “my spirit will never die” and “my music never dies” and gives me goosebumps.
There is also raw rocking, such as in the dirty blues rocker I’m A Hound Dog, dirty in the best Red Devils tradition. A Good Day For The Blues is also a raw, pumping blues rocker. Down The Long Road has a solid layer of fuzz and a clumsy boogie ending. The heavenly blues rock ballad City Or A Ghost Town fits in with the blues sound of Gary Moore and Snowy White.
After Fly Away is an invitation to fly into heaven in a pleasant way, you really realize it! Rob Hendrikse has done it! He has released a very impressive album!
