With thousands of miles driven, countless hours of conversations, electrifying live performances, and soulful studio recording sessions, The King Bees are honored to share the world of the legendary Jerry McCain. We laughed, cried, and created music with a man who not only shaped our sound but also deepened our understanding of the blues.
Born in Attalla, Alabama, Jerry McCain’s journey from collecting scrap iron to buy his first harmonica to becoming a blues legend is an inspiring tale of resilience and talent. His recording career began in 1953 with Trumpet Records, and he quickly became known for his unique harmonica style, characterized by an amplified, jazz-influenced technique.
Throughout the 1960s, Jerry recorded for iconic labels like Excello, Okeh, and Jewel, leaving an indelible mark on the blues. Despite facing racial violence and hardship, Jerry’s spirit and music thrived, and his influence extended to many, including The King Bees.
Our journey with Jerry began with a simple phone call and led to unforgettable gigs, including a major performance at Birmingham City Stages. We became part of his world, meeting colorful characters and witnessing the trials and triumphs of his life. Jerry’s immense talent and ego were survival tools against the racism and violence of the Jim Crow South, making his story a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of the blues.
This CD is a tribute to Jerry McCain, a mentor, friend, and extraordinary musician. It captures the essence of our time with him, from backyard BBQs to late-night rehearsals. The King Bees are forever grateful for the memories and the music we created together.
Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Jerry McCain. His music, stories, and spirit live on through these tracks, and we hope they bring you as much joy and inspiration as they brought to us.The King Bees & Rob Baskerville ~  Penny Zamagni
