2021 Blues Blast Music Award Nominees: New Artist Debut Album: Big Mike Aguirre feat. The Blu City All Stars – Mississippi Stew!
On Easter Sunday of the year 2000, 19-year old Michael “Big Mike” Aguirre was initiated into the East St. Louis Rhythm, Blues, Roots & Soul Tradition as a novice guitarist. With no formal musical training, ability to read music, cell phone, internet, or money to buy and learn from records or CDs, he was schooled - often ruthlessly - always lovingly - by St. Louis Blues luminaries such as David Dee, Boo Boo Davis, Big George Brock, Oliver Sain, Bennie Smith, Arthur Williams, “Blues Boy Bubba” (Emmanuel Smith), Barbara Carr, Charles Hunt, Eugene Johnson, Roland Johnson, Willie Johnson, Willie “Al” Green, Kim Massie, and dozens upon dozens of veteran blues, jazz, soul and roots ensemble musicians within the thriving St. Louis tradition, each leaving an indelible inspiration and imprint. Years before ever stepping in front of a microphone, Big Mike immersed and absorbed invaluable craft and life lessons onstage and off throughout the Greater St. Louis area. From the fabled stage of the legendary Manhattan Club/Four Aces at 1312 Broadway; Another Level at 6th & Dr. Martin Luther King Drive; My Way on the Corner of 6th & West Florissant (Steps away from the old Club Imperial); Geno’s Lounge at 6161 Natural Bridge (just down the road from Oliver Sain’s Archway Studios) on the North Side; and all points in between Alorton snd Wellston, Big Mike was schooled in the art and science of live ensemble musicianship and the magic of creating a palpable soul-to-soul connection with the audience. After nearly a decade of service to the Elders of the Tradition, Big Mike was given the blessing to step in front of the microphone as a bandleader. In 2009, he founded the Blu-City All Stars: a vehicle to infuse the breadth and scope of the greater St. Louis live music community with the elemental Roots, Rhythm & Soul Tradition; develop chemistry with musicians of all ages and walks of life; and showcase a revolving cast of St. Louis talent. From 2010-2020, Big Mike & the Blu City All-Stars dominated headliner billing at premier St. Louis venues and festivals, including BB’s Jazz Blues & Soups, the infamous Beale on Broadway, Natural Blues Museum, Missouri Botanical Garden, and Big Muddy Blues Festival, to name but a few. On March 7, 2020, Big Mike walked out of his apartment at 1600 Locust Street in Downtown St. Louis to board a plane and perform at Moonsplash - the longest running reggae festival in the Caribbean - in Anguilla. He hasn’t been seen since. On July 5, 2021, Aguirre’s chronicle of 20 years in service to the St.Louis tradition and debut studio album: “Mississippi Stew,” will be released across digital platforms. On August 29, 2021, for the first time in 542 days, the Blu City All Stars will reunite for a single 2021 performance at the Dune Preserve, Rendezvous Bay, Anguilla, to benefit Project Stingray: an initiative founded by Bankie Banx and the Soroptimists International of Anguilla that provides free instruments, musical instruction and mentoring to the Youth of Anguilla.
