On his second full album (he shows up on some JSP multi-artists blues compilations), Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones brings his brand of Texas blues to 13 tunes firmly in a contemporary mode. Jones' guitar is highly influenced by Freddie King, but every once in a while you'll catch a strain of Albert Collins or Johnny Copeland popping in as well. Nine of the 13 tunes aboard come from Jones' pen, while bandmembers Tommy Hill and Ronnie Bramhall contribute one tune apiece. Nice covers of King Curtis' "Soul Serenade" and Junior Wells' "Little by Little" complete the package. Jones' vocals are less than thrilling, but a load of solid playing and well-thought-out arrangements wedded to well-above-average material makes this album worth a listen for fans of modern blues.
