Duncan Street's Baptized By The Blues is exactly what the doctor intended: “Make a powerful blues album with fundamental instrumentation and high emotional expression drawn from the swamps and take everything away.” I fear that these two gentlemen have succeeded quite well. For years, Dave Duncan has been an example for country and blues musicians who enjoyed playing with Dave. However, Dave also played with companion Delbert McClinton for many years, but also composed a number of solo albums. Now, as a duo with Stan Street, it is no wonder that this duo has delivered an excellent blues album under the name 'Duncan Street'.Stan Street is traditionally a folk musician and gallery owner. Street and Duncan saw each other playing on the street three years ago and saw potential in doing something together. If necessary, they play on every street corner, but they also do fun things on stage. In 2013 they played a few gigs and released a record “Baptized By The Blues”, which was recorded in three days in LaFayette in Louisiana.Dave Duncan has been a professional guitarist for over thirty-five years. He has worked as a pedal steel guitarist with cowboy and singer Johnny Western, as a rockabilly guitarist with pianist SE Willis, with Jack Pearson & The Nationals and with the Goose Creek Symphony. As a songwriter, Dave Duncan has written several songs for other musicians such as Curtis Salgado and country singers Lorrie Morgan & Buddy Jewell. Under his own name, he released three albums. Guests can be heard on these albums from former members such as The Allman Brothers, Delbert McClinton, Stevie Ray Vaughan's Band, The Nighhawks, Sea Level. Not a bad list... I think. You immediately hear the influences from the southern-styled blues that is played on this record. There's no doubt that the old Delta blues artists of the past played a role here, and that's especially evident during the kickoff of “Go Right Back to Bed.” But if you want to hear more of that old blues flavor, stop looking and play the only cover of the CD by Muddy Waters “I Be's Troubled”, which they have given their own style, but which has still remained nice and authentic . Dave Duncan wrote all the songs except Waters' song.As far as I'm concerned, this is a pure-bred delta blues record with a lot going for it. Nice harp, uptempo, sounds cheerful, swampy from the swamps with excellent singing and contains a summer hit par excellence: “Watermelon, Barbecue and Beer”. Have a great time with great late summer weather and atmosphere. This CD has covered almost all the basics with lyrics about food, beer, Blues history, Blues future, baptismal promises, love, past love, joy, sadness. This is a solid blues album by two masters of the blues genre and certainly belongs on the shelf of every true blues lover.Bringing those guys to the Netherlands, they can easily be the support act for Ralph De Jongh... just to show where and how we can interpret this music, to a certain extent.
