Arny Kay. Born in Germany in 1947, the german-american Rock and Blues guitar slinger grew up in Gurnee, Illinois, north of Chicago. Having spent his school education in Germany, he returned to the States in the mid-sixties. The following years he played clubs mainly in the Chicago area, where he used to live. He was strongly influenced by the Chicago blues scene of these years, being in contact with well-known artists like Little Wolf, Homesick James, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Luther Allison, and many more. In 1978 he took a permanent residence in Germany, now living for the past several years in the southern Germany area. The eighties saw Arny Kay frequently on tour with his long-time friend Luther Allison who died in 1997. Their cooperation resulted in the production of a record "Rockin The Blues" released in 1987. By now Arny has his unmistakable personal style of playing the guitar, combining influences of Jimi, Freddy King, Buddy Guy, SRV, and of course, Luther Allison. ~ last.fm

Classic 1982 Chicago studio session also featuring Buddy Guy - plus stunning live tracks and previously unreleased three track studio session.<P> "Phil Guy was always guaranteed to tear the joint up. Once he plugged in his battered Fender Telecaster, he took no prisoners." Julian Piper <P> "Jimmy Dawkins came of age in the late 50s and early 60s alongside Magic Sam and Otis Rush... he plays as if his guitar were on fire.<BR> David Whiteis <P> Born in Lettsworth, Louisiana, on April 28th, 1940 Phil Guy was the younger brother of Buddy Guy. He learned to play Buddy's acoustic guitar and was soon sneaking from home to hear a harmonica player John Tilley, better known as 'Big Poppa'. <P> "I moved up to Chicago probably in '69 because in Baton Rouge there was just no work. I was tired of my job at a law firm and I wanted to travel and get into the blues. I just wanted to move out of Louisiana because the blues scene was in Chicago." <P> On arrival in Chicago he joined Buddy's band who were booked for a U.S. State Department sponsored tour of Africa. By 1970, Phil was a member of brother Buddy and Junior Wells' band opening for the Rolling Stones on a European tour including three nights in Paris in September. Phil even managed to squeeze in session work in Paris on a Memphis Slim album. <P> He said of himself: "I'm a north side - south side player. I never play the west side - I'm going to try to play the west side because they really like the blues. They stick to guitars and drums, they don't use keyboards too, much like the south side players do." <P> Jimmy 'Fastfingers' Dawkins hailed from Tchula, Mississippi. "I got my first guitar in 1953, or late 1952. My mother bought it for me from a Chicago mail order house for a very expensive price, at that time, of $11. I was always around the bands of Smiley Lewis, Guitar Slim and Fats Domino. I would say I liked their styles better than the Chicago sound. Then I came to Chicago in '55 and I see harmonica, two guitars and a drummer. They still sounded full. But I couldn't understand it. This wasn't what I expected to find, but I liked it once I did discover it."

Alex Zayas - Electric Ryder, Vol. 1 (Sun) EP

Year: 2019
Time: 24:07
Size: 55,5 MB
Label: Self Released
Styles: Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Electric Ryder - 4:36
 2. Sun - 3:10
 3. Best Girl - 4:56
 4. Time Ain't Got No Time - 4:56
 5. Heart Of Stone - 3:02
 6. Deadly World - 3:25

Alex started playing guitar and singing at age 7. Influenced by his brother, who opened him the doors to all kinds of music. After playing with several local outfits in Barcelona, an 18 year old Alex joined harp bluesman Hook Herrera (Gov’t Mule, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Kid Ramos, Denny Freeman)
Hook was Alex’s first mentor and also introduced him to the start of a music career by teaching him how to understand the music, specially the blues, and opening the doors into the profesional bussiness. With Hook Alex had the chance to play in the best festivals and clubs all over Europe.
Three years later he formed his own band Alex TNT, and got a residence in “La Boite”, a prominent Barcelona music club, as well as playing in other clubs and festivals in the Barcelona area. As Alex TNT, he has released 3 albums, Walking your way (Discmedi, 2001), I feel the blues again (Mas i Mas, 2003) and Alex TNT (Gaztaluzpeko, 2009) all on which he explored different facets of the Blues exclusively. He later joined African bassist/vocalist Steve de Swardt’s blues band, where he met a key influence in his career, string master Javier Mas (Leonard Cohen, Mª del Mar Bonet, etc). He shared countless nights onstage playing together with them and St. Louis drummer Julian Vaughn (Albert King, B. B. King, Johnny Copeland) at the Jamboree Jazz club in Barcelona. During this time he toured in Canada and the US with a couple of Chicago artists and later with his own band. In November of 2006, Alex had the privilege to open for the King of Blues B. B. King at the Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. After many years on the circuit and being known as Alex TNT, he decides to ultimately shift his artistic identity to ZAYAS / Alex Zayas for the occasion of the release of his fourth album Guitarshock (Mitik, 2012), where he underwent a deep self exploration to find a new path through which to forge all of his past and present influences. Alex Zayas has also played with artists such as Larry McCray, Johnny B Gayden, Lynwood Slim, U.P. Wilson (Texas Tornado), Paul Orta, Alvin Youngblood Heart, Julian Vaughn, Javier Mas, Roberto Olori, Mike Wheeler, Russell Jackson, Larry Williams, Alex Napier (Bassplayer for The Cobras), Carl Weathersby, Keith Dunn, among others.. And has perfomed all around Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Italy, Canada and the USA, especially in Chicago (Buddy Guy’s legends) and Texas (Saxons pub, Kenny Durham backyard, Vince Young steakhouse and Sams burger joint music hall).
Alex tours Canada since 2005 playing in venues like: The Blues on Whyte (Edmonton), The Blues Can (Calgary), Fratter’s (Red Deer), The Drake (Canmore) and Lynnwood Station (Calgary) to name a few. In the summer of 2014 he toured Nova Scotia and played at The Calgary international Blues Festival.
On his fourth album “Guitarshock”, he found his own and original style and it’s an electric blend of Blues, Funk and Rock. His latest album “Electric Ryder Vol.1 (Sun)” is his most mature effort to date, and he confirms he found his own path.

Harlan Flo - Strategy

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2012
Time: 29:53
Size: 69,2 MB
Label: Self Released
Styles: Blues/Funk/Country
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Land of the Gardens - 3:26
 2. Stumble Quick and Run - 3:21
 3. Strategy - 5:09
 4. Bittersweet - 3:03
 5. Sleepless Nights - 4:23
 6. Black Bridges and Bones - 3:43
 7. Border Town - 3:45
 8. Shoot the Stars - 3:03

Harlan Flo are that are that rare species, an apparent fiercely independent band (not to be confused with indie) who explore their own unique 'voice' that marks them out as more than merely interesting and certainly different from their peers. 'Strategy' is an album full of well crafted, beautifully delivered songs that make the most of thoughtful arrangements and a crisp production.
The 8 track album gradually unravels its inner core via subtle harmony led vocals that wash over tightly wrapped rhythms to colour the songs with funk, blues, country and MOR rock influences. It's an understated style that is given coherence by Patrick Dugan's warm vocals which evoke early career America ('Horse With No Name'). He's joined on the opening 'Land of the Gardens' by the versatile Amanda Riva who cleverly slips between back up singing and full blown duets. 'Strategy' taks us on a mellifluous journey of well crafted, harmony led music that unlike so much contemporary rock beguiles you with its charm rather than bludgeons you over the head with telegraphed hooks.
'In many respects 'Strategy' is a mood album full of feel and the kind of insistent rhythms that stick in the memory. Amanda impressively takes the lead vocal on the up tempo riff led and snappy arrangement of 'Stumble Quick & Run'. There's also some clever contrasting, alternating verses featuring Patrick's husky vocals and Amanda's higher register phrasing on a beautifully conceived track with noir lyrics. It's a quirky rhythmic style full of dynamics and a ripping rhythm section that they return to on the equally impressive 'Black Bridges and Bones'. 'Bones' features a snaking lead guitar line, a staccato rhythm track and a clever rhythmic stuttered vocal, delivered in unison with the accompanying guitar line.
'Strategy' is an organic sounding album that presumably mirrors the band's live performance in a studio setting. The production is understated and the result is a live feel that places the songs and vocals at the very centre of the mix. The title track for example, bubbles and broods in a way that suggest the band could explode at any moment but they content themselves with sticking to the vocal led duet. On 'Bittersweet' they veer into James Taylor meets country territory, while the 70's style country rock love song 'Sleepless Night' could have been written by Poco.
Harlan Lo's strength lies in their ability to follow where their grooves and their lyrics take them. 'Bordertown' for example, is an understated groove that builds by degrees with accented harmony vocals and an uplifting feel courtesy of Patrick's two solos that are as short and succinct as they are effective. Older rock fans might remember String Driven Thing with their duet vocals and dynamic rocking grooves, albeit with a violin. Harlan Flo have the same drive, energy, spontaneity and lyrics to match and 'Strategy' is a successful meeting of contemporary and retro influences that find their shape in well crafted songs.
The album finishes with the slightly heavier slide led duet 'Shoot the Stars'. It's full of handclaps and plenty of space as drummer Aaron Apte adds a clever quiet/loud percussive bottom, while his closing old fashioned drum roll screams,' that's your lot finished and done'.
You should check out this album if only to refresh the jaded palate with eight bright, breezy and eloquently delivered songs from a band that actually sounds like they really are enjoying themselves.

Again Live-Blues-Power on Brambus Records: ANDY EGERT and his blues band are one of the most appearing live-bands of Switzerland and has got a high reputation during the last ten years. After three studio albums, the band now celebrates its 10th anniversary with a strong and dynamic live-album, presenting blues at its best and in the tradition of their great heroes Eric Clapton, Freddie, Albert und B.B. King, Alvin Lee, Jimi Hendrix and also Robert Johnson!

The line-up of the Andy Egert Blues Band currently has the bandleader in the middle and Robi Karmann (bass) and Michi Stulz (drums), both best known from their work with the longestablished Lazy Poker Blues Band.Ten songs with more than one hour playing time have been recorded, mostly dynamic blues power with some well known titles penned by Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix and others, but also including some not less faszinating original compositions by Andy Egert.Live-Blues-Power, "Made In Switzerland" but ready for the world.

 9. Dr.Brown/Reconsider Baby -  7:28

This album is a true representation of Stan Webb's Chicken Shack live set even today, I have seen them as recently  and the set still contains some of this material. This is one of the best live recordings I have come across and is a mix of true blues, and rock / blues. The guitar work from both Stan the man and Gary Davis is a pleasure to hear, supported by a strong bass and drum section that is rock solid all the way through. This album is well worth buying as an introduction to a very sadly overlooked guiter hero who's explosive and soulful style equals most of the top guitar names, also this is a live act well worth seeing for pure power blues at its best.(By David Rea)

Musicians:
Pontus Snibb - SG & Vocals;
Mats Rydström - Bass & Background Vocals;
Niklas Matsson - Drums & Background Vocals.

Pontus Snibb has through the years proved that he's one of Sweden's best singers and guitar players with a long-lasting, productive career as a recording and live artist with bands such as SNiBB and Bonafide, who are currently getting a lot of attention in Europe. Pontus Snibb 3 is, on one hand, a brand new band, on the other a continuation of Pontus' previous solo career, and this album is thereby a follow-up of sorts to Admiral Street Recordings 1 and 2, the latter having also been released by Rootsy back in 2009. Besides Pontus on guitar and vocals, the band features Backdraft's rhythm section, bass player Mats Rydstr"m and drummer Niklas Matsson (also in Bonafide), who have also recorded and toured with US boogie legends Raging Slab. The album was recorded in less than a week, mostly live, in the respected Gig Studio in Stockholm, Sweden together with Conny Wall (who've worked with Ane Brun, Electric Boys, Peter Bjorn & John, Imperial State Electric to name a few. Loud Feathers consists of eleven tracks, with influences from all forms of classic rock, ranging from the Who to Free to Crazy Horse to Van Halen. The album also features three prominent guests: guitarist Conny Bloom from Electric Boys, Mats Ronander on harmonica (who played with ABBA!) and screams courtesy of Ralf Gyllenhammar from Mustasch.

Indigenous - Live At Pachyderm Studio 1998

Bitrate: 320K/s

Tracks Listing:
 1. Holdin' Out -  6:57
 2. Begin To Wonder -  4:23
 3. Don't Take Your Time -  3:07
 4. Blues From The Sky -  9:58
 5. Blues This Morning -  3:19
 6. Water -  5:44
 7. I Wonder Why - 10:03
 8. Bring Back That Day -  5:30
 9. Red House - 12:12

Performed for a tiny audience at the renowned Pachyderm Studio in 1998, this CD is the best example of what Indigenous sound like live. While their national debut Things We Do is an excellent introduction to their music, their live shows are far above and beyond any studio recording in terms of energy and performance, as the entire band frequently takes off into 10-minute jams to mind-blowing effect. Live at Pachyderm Studio provides a taste of that, including extended versions of several previously recorded songs, as well as previously unavailable material. An item of special interest is the cover of Hendrix's "Red House"; the guitarist's influence on Indigenous frontman Mato Nanji is undeniable. The production on this album is so clear, putting it in the stereo and cranking it up might be almost as good as hearing them live. This band is addictive, and Live at Pachyderm Studio is the perfect fix ~ Genevieve Williams

Eddie Kirkland - Some Like It Raw

 7. Got My Mojo Working - 6:23
 8. Grease Your Monkey - 5:15
 9. In Love With You - 3:39
10. Love Don't Love Nobody - 9:34

Eddie Kirkland is a legend among those in the know about blues underground back stories. He toured with John Lee Hooker, played with, was beloved by, and/or mentored too many name-brand legends to list here (cough -hendrix -cough - otis redding - cough), but he never got anywhere near their commercial success. Instead, he toured nearly constantly, taking with him and breaking in some of the best side men (and women) you've never heard of.The band on Some Like It Raw is exceptional. Timo Shanko and Ray Anthony are virtuoso players who came out of Boston and later settled in New York to form the Fully Celebrated Orchestra, Their technical skills are unparalleled, but what's important in this context is that they can swing their butts (and yours) off. Seriously - look into these guys. Billy Boardman is a well-known and much-loved Boston-based front man in his own right (now retired), but he has zero problem in the side position. And he, Timo, and Ray are as cohesive a band as you could want to find. Then there's Eddie: dynamic, explosive, and, yes, raw. Great record. If you like the blues - the real blues - you will love this record.

The sound of The Whiskey Foundation carries you away. Away into an era that no longer exists, away to places that probably only exist in pure culture outside of Bavaria, the home of the six musicians. It's all the more astonishing how quickly one believes the blues-funk sound in their live performances: With pumping basses, driving drums, a wafting Hammond organ, dirty vocals and floating to edgy guitars complemented by a brilliantly played harmonica, they close there Even first-time listeners close their eyes after just a few minutes, drifting off into another world, becoming absorbed in the music - and gradually relinquishing responsibility for their own body and its movements. Precisely because of this effect, The Whiskey Foundation has evolved over the years since its Founded in 2011, they have developed a reputation as an inspiring live band beyond Germany's borders. During this time, the Munich blues quintet played more than 300 concerts at festivals, in pubs and clubs and was booked as support for AC/DC and Deep Purple The fourth studio album "Leisure" will be released on December 9th, 2022 - on the album and live now as a sextet with two new guitarists!

Two years after forming their highly praised debut album Take The Walk released and the shows that followed it across Germany led them to gaining even wider acclaim. 2015 saw The Whiskey Foundation take their career to new heights, with many of the songs off of their sophomore album Mood Machine receiving substantial air-time on the radio.
Now join The Whiskey Foundation in their parallel universe and follow Murat Kaydirma's husky voice as it takes you to another time and place, complete with energetic piano, languid beat and electrifying riffs. With the release of their third album, "Blues and Bliss", The Whiskey Foundation introduced us to the southern states with their inevitably danceable mix of rock, blues and psychedelic music.

"Eric Johanson - 'Live at DBA: New Orleans Bootleg' is a live recording of the band at DBA on Frenchmen Street in New Orleans, on January 15, 2022. The term "Bootleg" is used loosely here as the audio is sourced from the direct stage mics and mixed for release. It sounds good! However, this was not a big-budget, planned-out live recording with mics in the crowd, etc. In fact, the crowd cheers you hear are only coming through Eric's vocal mic.
"Ultimately we felt this recording captured the fire, emotion, and energy of the band that many have not been able to witness due to the challenges of the past couple of years, and we wanted to share it with you." - Eric Johanson

13. Triple Trouble (Live) - 5:21
14. The Creeper (Live) - 4:56

When reviewing Paolo Demontis’ previous releases Blues Blast writer Greg Szalony suggested that “after two CDs of much the same, it may well be time to add a few musicians into the mix”. Well, looks like Greg’s advice has been heeded, as Paolo has joined forces with established trio Good Gheddo to form this quartet: Paolo on harp and vocals, Vincent Petrone on guitar and vocals, Paolo Sclaverano on bass and Luca Bozzola on drums. This album was recorded live in April 2022 in Rivoli, Italy and we get to hear the whole show here, a substantial fourteen tunes, three originals and eleven covers.
As Greg noted in his previous reviews, Paolo sings with a heavy accent, but is clearly a master practitioner on his chosen instrument. The accent is less of a problem on familiar tunes like Billy Boy Arnold’s “I Wish You Would”, rather more so on less frequently heard songs like William Clarke’s “Lollipop Mama”, but both tracks have great solo work from harp and guitar. Many of the tunes are reprised from the cream of harp players’ repertoires and there are some familiar names there, Paul Butterfield, Little Walter, Slim Harpo, James Cotton as well as more ‘modern’ exponents like Gary Primich and Tim Gonzalez. The Butterfield selection is “Born In Chicago” (though actually written by vocalist Nick Gravenites) and is given a rough and ready treatment, the shortest cut on the album. Little Walter’s “Juke” is the classic for harp players to strut their stuff and Paolo really impresses here, the tune placed at the start of a rousing finale to the album, immediately followed by the familiar sounds of “Shake Your Hips” (complete with vocals through the harp mike), Primich’s “Triple Trouble” (distorted vocals did not help here) and Cotton’s famous instrumental “The Creeper” which closes the show in fine fashion. Material from outside the harp players’ union includes Johnny Winter’s “Talk Is Cheap” which opens the set, Willie Dixon’s “Hoochie Coochie Man”, played in a slightly more funky style than we usually hear, and “Another Fine Day” by Patrick Ford, the drummer brother of guitarist Robben. The three originals are neatly shared across the band: Vincent’s shuffle “Talking To You” sounds good and the vocals are clearer (perhaps Vincent singing on his own song?); as on most of the tunes here, the instrumental features are strong, this time mainly the guitar. “Don’t Touch My Blues” is a slow blues from Paolo which opens with an extended statement from Vincent before Paolo enters on vocals; at seven minutes there is ample space for both men to feature at length. The third original “I Believe” is credited to the whole band and works off a nagging riff from which Paolo launches a fine solo.
Overall this live recording shows what the band is all about with plenty of guitar and harp work on show (https://www.bluesblastmagazine.com/paolo-demontis-the-good-gheddo-live-blues-blast-album-review/).

After about a week Donovan noticed he had created an audience of 20 plus Marines, it soon became a daily event and the audience continued to grow. While in Iraq, Donovan suffered a hand injury and had to have bone fusion surgery upon returning home. In 2009 after spending his last 3 years on medical/reserve status the United States Marine Corp discharged Donovan with 8 years of Honorable Service. In 2006, Donovan went to New York City and attended Digidesigns School at Soundtrack Studios and became a Certified Digidesigns Pro Tools Operator. Then, in 2007 he opened Dungeon Recording and Sound Studio in Westcliffe, CO. Donovan has recorded multiple local artists and helped them succeed in their own musical ambitions. Donovan decided to continue his own passion for music and started playing drums for a local country band. Donovan had the opportunity to perform as an opening act with Josh Gracin. In October of 2009 Donovan created his own Band, Taylors Bayou. Taylors Bayou began an 8 state tour and has played over 600 shows and festivals to include: Nebraskaland Days, The Hershey Fall Fest, The Canon City Music and Blossom Festival, The Archuleta County Fair and Copper Country at Copper Mountain. Connecticut's Johnny Boots has a hard working, big sounding power trio that plays driving, blues-infused rock. Johnny has combined the intensity of SRV, with singer/songwriter ballads and electrified Delta blues to create his own "Bootsy-fied" sound. As DJ Bill Nolan of WPKN said of Johnny, "Here's a guitar player/vocalist, who can write his own songs and play with the fire of a Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan, a real deal "Italian Stallion," when it comes to riding the blue note into the stratosphere to entertain the heavens and the rest of us music fans here on Mother Earth!!"
"Johnny Boots Band, 'Everybody's Got to Eat' (Boot in Yur Ear) - Fairfield guitarist Johnny 'Boots' Giannicchi burns up the fretboard on a set of blues-rock originals, a funkified version of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" and a rock-solid cover of 'Crosscut Saw' (recorded by Albert King, among others). Giannicchi plays with a thick, dirty guitar tone sure to thrill electric blues fans, and sings in a voice that fits with the blues without ever sounding forced. He swings, he shuffles and he rocks, making 'Eat' tasty indeed. Eric R. Danton - The Hartford Courant, Hartford, CT

Telling Rory of an American recording Chrysalis Records were doing with musician  Frankie Miller, at Elliot Mazor’s ‘His Master’s Wheels Studios, in San Francisco,’ prompted my brother to recall his past connection with Elliot, when Mazor travelled to Europe with signer songwriter Jake Holmes, who was appearing on Taste’s fair-well European tour, in 1970. While on tour, Rory had chatted at length with Mazor about musicians and recording in the U.S.A. Rory was keen on the Nashville recordings Elliot had made with ‘Area Code 615‘ and later his work on Neil Young’s ‘Harvest’. So, in November 1977 as Rory was coming to the end of a 6 month world tour and while in Osaka, Japan he used the bands one day off to take them into a recording studio to demo the tracks my brother had penned and the results were couriered over to Elliot. The Rory entourage, then flew from Tokyo to Los Angeles. Arriving on the 6th November, with a blanked out date sheet, all was set for the ‘American’ recording. With little time to catch his breath, Chrysalis art director Peter Wagg had whipped my brother off for the album cover shoot with photographer Gary Heery, in L.A. By the 10th November, with the band’s back-line now safely freighted to San Francisco from Japan, we took the ‘shuttle’ up to the Bay Area and rehearsals commenced. Our temporary homes were an apartment block, in the Pacific Heights district, La Guana and Broadway. Sharing an apartment with Rory, within which Elliot had installed a studio playback facility. Located at 60 Brady Street, His Masters Wheels Studios became our home for the next month and half. Our next door neighbour was Stars Guitars, the owner Ron provided instruments for the Grateful Dead and the Bay musicians, Rory was in and out all day trying different guitars and all the omens for the recording looked good. The studios were booked up until Christmas with mixing due to start early January but by mid Dec this plan was already going South and costs were ratcheting up . The band returned home for a break over Christmas, and this is when I began to hear of Rory’s doubts and fears about his ‘American’ album, as he listened to track after track, “Maybe it’ll be okay when we mix it, but, but … ?” Uncertainty reigned, as Rory seemed lost for explanation. Was it the room? the engineering? Even the control room’s machinery seemed plagued with ‘gremlins’. Reality and a certain amount of hind-sight suggest that in Rory’s ‘heart of hearts’, his disappointment with the project is that he wasn’t making the ‘American album he had envisaged. Despite their undoubted talents, he began to feel ‘saddled’ with his band, the financial burden of a recording project that had already exceeded it’s record company advance ($150k), and still had to be mixed and mastered. With more time on their hands, the band musicians were ‘chilling out’ with the studio chief, this left my brother believing his control on the work had been diminished. However Rory returned to San Francisco, reinvigorated by his stay at home in Cork, determined to see if he could salvage the recordings by re-mixing the tracks.
I arrived in Los Angeles on the 10th of January, in time for Chrysalis Record’s pre-arranged gathering of it’s 50+ sales representatives at their Hollywood headquarters for a playback session – this was to be the big push! Rory was still ‘troubled’ with the San Franciscan sessions and didn’t wish to play the mastered disc to anyone other than myself. I tried to rationalise with him to allow me to take the album over to the Chrysalis meeting to play it to the executives with the condition that I tell them that he needed more time to do another mix on the tracks. This would ‘buy’ repair time and hopefully keep the kettle boiling with a little steam lost. With the pressure of time I frustratingly asked Rory at at least allow me to play a couple of tracks at the meeting. “No!” he replied. Again, I continued to plead, “If I don’t have something to play, at least can I take the record in and explain with it physically in my hand”. “No”, was the response. As both our tensions and voices rose, Rory made his point and stance clear “This is what I think of the sessions”, as he released his fingers’ grip on the disc, allowing it to descend into the trash bin. “I’m going to re-record the whole album and with different people”, Rory concluded. In horror and shock, I exclaimed “I feel like breaking ….” and left his room to head for Chrysalis’s office to try to blag my way out of the mess – I now had stage fright office style!
Returning to the Sunset Marquis Hotel, I was greeted by the manager she curiously told me all was okay as I read my messages, the first from our travel agent Diane, “Have taken Rory to the Mount Sinai hospital, will call”. The hotel staff seemed confused as to what had happened to my brother, other than that there had been an accident.
I waited in dread until my good friend Diane returned with Rory some hours later. “Your brother is fine, he’s only fractured his right thumb and will be unable to play guitar for six weeks or so”, she advised.
Both relief and horror hit. “Better get us on a flight back to London, tomorrow I need to fly up to San Francisco and settle things with Elliot”, I requested of Diane. I knew we were in a deep hole and had to stop the digging.
Meeting Elliot at the airport, I settled all our affairs with the him, who had hoped that Rory might reconsider another attempt at the album, however, I had to tell Mazor that my brother’s position was entrenched, we parted amicably and I returned to L.A.
Diane being not only the travel agent for the Rory outfit but also the record company, meant the news of my brother’s accident reached the Chrysalis office quickly. This was fortunate as I didn’t have to deliver more bad news and the company allowed for a longer delivery time extension.
After a short stay in London, Rory and I returned home to Cork. Home was the best for healing, there we would chat until the dawn (my poor mother included), Rory a nocturnal being would only download after the midnight hour, the night’s calm seemed like a balm.
As band-leader, Rory would deal with musicians directly himself, with no others allowed. Way down the house’s long garden Rory told me of new demands Rod, Lou  (and Gerry to a certain extent) had made on him on our brief trip through London. I was quite taken aback, given all the circumstances and the escalated costs and borrowings for the album.
“What’s your response”, I enquired.“It’s the end of this line-up as I see it, frankly, after the San Francisco stay, it’s time to move on. I want to find new musicians and return to a three piece, it’s all gotten too complicated and my music needs to be more direct”.
In the intervening days I suggested that he might consider retaining McAvoy, who had been disturbed by Rod’s tenacity and asked me to help him keep his position with Rory.
Encamped at London’s Air studios Rory began his auditions, and began to grow dissatisfied and frustrated with the intake. Engineer Colin Fairley said “Is this the style you’re after?’, as he lashed into the studio kit.“You’ve got the job Colin!”, Rory seriously declared.
“I can’t help you Rory but I know the guy you need”, said Colin, “Ted McKenna, he used to play with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band”. And so the next chapter unravelled and Rory, Gerry and Ted went on to record what became ‘Photo Finish’, which was released in October 1978.
Rory, however, was never against the San Francisco album being released in some form remixed. So now, in 2011, with all the benefits the modern studio affords, the album finally sees the light of day. It is coupled with a brand new live album recorded at a series of concerts at The Old Waldorf in San Francisco, that Rory played in December, 1979 which ably shows the power and sound of the trio that Rory was anxious to get back to.

It's surprising, considering the interesting back story on the studio portion of this posthumous Rory Gallagher release, that there are no notes on the actual packaging to chronicle its eventual appearance in 2011, nearly 33 years after being recorded in December 1977. According to the press release, though, Gallagher clashed with producer Elliot Mazer about the mix on these dozen tunes and not only shelved the tapes but broke up his longtime band after the San Francisco session ended. Out went keyboardist Lou Martin and drummer Rod de'Ath, replaced by skinsman Ted McKenna (bassist Gerry McAvoy remained) to strip down the sound for his next phase. About half these songs, such as "Mississippi Sheiks," "Fuel to the Fire," "Brute Force & Ignorance," "Cruise on Out," and "Overnight Bag" appeared on 1978's Photo Finish in different performances. Some, like the closing "Out on the Tiles" and "B Girl," will be new to all but the most ardent Gallagher followers. Shortly before his death, the guitarist apparently mentioned to his brother Dónal that he'd like the tapes to be released someday if they were remixed, which is exactly what Dónal's son Daniel did in 2011, resulting in these long-lost tracks finally seeing the light of day. Despite Gallagher's reservations, everything here is up to his usual high standard, and he obviously respected the material enough to re-record the bulk of it with a different band and producer later that year. The electric violin on "Mississippi Sheiks" is a new twist on both Gallagher's blues-rock style and the song, which helps differentiate this version from the more famous one that appeared on Photo Finish. Saxophone, played by Martin Fiero, enhances two cuts, also bringing a unique groove, especially to the lumbering "Brute Force and Ignorance." The package includes a December 1979 live show, also recorded in San Francisco, that finds Gallagher and his two-piece in typically fine fettle. They revisit the Taste-era chestnut "Bullfrog Blues" and tear into the rarity "I'm Leavin'" with their notorious paint-peeling approach. He digs back some years for a tough take on "Tattoo'd Lady," but most of the set is derived from his mid- to late-'70s albums Top Priority, Photo Finish, and Calling Card. A breathless "Sea Cruise" closes the set, and is probably a nod to Jerry Lee Lewis, on whose album Gallagher guested. It caps off a roaring, electrifying show that, along with the studio disc, makes a worthwhile addition to any Gallagher lover's collection. Even lacking detailed liner notes, this is a keeper and an important historical document in Rory Gallagher's short but eventful career.
