MARCUS LAZARUS is a musician and songwriter who has just released his third album This Life. Based in Watford, Marcus took the demos over to Italy in May this year, and recorded in a studio in Tuscany for a week. A mix of UK and Italian musicians all contributed to the album, which has an eclectic mix of blues, rock, Americana and up-tempo funk. Marcus was raised in the North East of England and had local influences such as Dire Straits, Lindisfarne, Sting and Chris Rea as teen idols. Also a huge fan of Gary Moore and David Gilmour, his guitar and songwriting influences are obvious in his material to date. These days, Marcus is more focussed on his own songwriting and performing, having attended his first Blues festival in 2012, and has appeared at the latest Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival in Colne, Lancashire in August 2018 to huge acclaim.

Singer and guitarist Marcus Lazarus has put in countless  hours performing music that people love to hear, as he has participated in tribute bands that honored artists such as Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, The Blues Brothers, Status Quo, The Beatles, and Gary Moore. But back in 2013 he took a major step in making his own imprint on the music world when he cut his first original album. Marcus has taken the next step with his 2017 release, Save My Soul, and his sophomore album is nothing to sneeze at!
Marcus comes to us from Watford, UK, which is northwest of London. He lists his influences as Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Gary Moore, as you will hear this on his new CD (and I think you will be able to figure out a few more). Lazarus did most of the heavy lifting on Save My Soul: writing 12 of the 13 songs, taking on all of the vocals and guitars, playing most of the bass guitar parts, and programming all of the synth and drum tracks. He brought other musicians for a few of the songs, including Liam James Gray and Pete Thompson on drums, and Chris Gipson on the bass. I think you will agree that this is an ambitious project, and that Marcus did a good job with it! This 53-minute set kicks off with “Why Should I Suffer,” a blues rocker with a melody that is partially lifted from Dylan / Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower.” Lazarus has a pleasant tenor voice that is reminiscent of Eric Clapton, and his guitar work is very tight as it doubles up with the bass and synthesizer parts. A more traditional blues song, “I’m Tired,” follows this up and Marcus chooses to go a bit dirtier with his vocals on this one – he has an impressive array of vocal skills! There is a bit of everything on this album. After a spooky intro, Marcus explores swamp rock with the title track, “Save My Soul,” and this slow grinder is quite hypnotic. There is also a cool 1970s style AOR song, “Reflection,” which would have been right at home on Robin Trower’s 1974 masterpiece, Bridge of Sighs. Then there is “Stolen Away,” which draws on Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler to inspire both the vocals and guitar work. There are also a trio of songs that include Chris Gipson on bass and Pete Thompson on drums. Lazarus does a respectable job with the piano on “Women and Booze,” a hard-hitting boogie that fits in perfectly with this eclectic set. Things get fun with the chicken pickin’ on “Ain’t Nobody Beatin’ Down My Door,” which features the lead guitar of Shane Lamont over Thompson’s hard hitting snare. And Lazarus channels the melodic playing of the late Gary Moore on “Woke up in Soho,” which is one of the standout tracks on Save My Soul. There is one cover tune on the disc, “Flight of the Surf Guitar,” which was originally done by The Atlantics, an Australian surf rock band. The funny thing is, Marcus’ version actually sounds more like classic 1960s surf rock than the original, with a traditional surf rock guitar tone and more appropriate drums. This is a cool instrumental, and a very unexpected inclusion from this English bluesman.
With Save My Soul, Marcus Lazarus pays homage to guitarists that influenced him, and the results are a nice collection of blues-inspired originals. It is cool that he has stretched his boundaries by moving beyond covers, and it will be awesome to see what he does next! Danny Bryant - The Rage to Survive

Bitrate: 320K/s

Tracks Listing:
 1. The Rage to Survive - 3:01

 8. Looking Good - 3:02
 9. Till the Bottle Runs Dry - 3:01
10. Westport - 5:47

Respected by his peers and lauded by his hardcore followers, Danny Bryant connects his big blue heart to his fingers and voice on this his twelfth album resulting in a record of overwhelming blues emotions. This is typified by the searing opener Rage To Survive that sizzles like an isotope threatening to explode. Gritty guitar chordal riffs seep out of the speakers to get the toes tapping on Trouble With Love a song tailored made for Danny’s gruff vocal delivery. The outstanding blues lament Invisible Me is drenched in stark poignancy on a tale about people who society shun. Bryant’s voice channels a Howlin’ Wolf meets Wolfman Jack hybrid on this passionate paean to the underclass who disappear through the cracks in the fabric of everyday existence. Elsewhere, Rescue Me has the sure touch and influence of Freddie King with Bryant’s crafty guitar work speaking volumes. The main difference between this record, and his previous recordings, is the quality of songwriting, musicianship and the dramatic use of reverb elevating the quality of Bryant’s bluesy growl especially on Make Me Pay. But also the fine balance of blues ballads and bluesy bangers provides a well rounded ambience to this mature album. The sensitivity Bryant applies to Rain Stops Play and the playful musicality fluidly presented on the upbeat Looking Good coalesces finely with all that has gone before. The Quo-esque 12 bar blues bounce on Till The Bottle Runs Dry, offset with skittering piano, ensures the musical fun continues as the wistful Westport closes out a classy album that Danny Bryant has been promising for sometime. Recorded live and self written and produced, Bryant has been knocking on the door to success for sometime; this excellent release should finally blow it off its hinges.

Hamilton Loomis - Ain't Just Temporary

Size: 113,4 MB
Label: Blind Pig Records
Styles: Modern Electric Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Best Worst Day - 4:04

 5. Good Enough - 5:25

 8. Love Again - 3:47
 9. Won't Get Away - 4:06
10. That Thang - 3:52
11. Bow Wow - 5:47

Texas guitarist Hamilton Loomis was born and raised in Galveston, TX. Having come from a musical family, Loomis developed numerous skills as a multi-instrumentalist, learning drums, piano, guitar, and harmonica as an adolescent. By the age of 14, Loomis began writing, arranging, and performing his own material. He formed a vocal group consisting of family members and was playing prestigious gigs like the Delta Blues Festival. During his early years on the road Loomis met and was mentored by such legendary blues figures as Bo Diddley, Johnny Copeland, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and Albert Collins. In 1994 he released his first disc, Hamilton, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Album of the Year. Just Gimme One Night was his second release, followed in 2000 by both All Fired Up and Live: Highlights. Also in 2000, Loomis utilized his acting ability by accepting the role of Trevor in the VH1 original movie At Any Cost. Upon signing with Blind Pig Records the guitarist released his first disc for the label, Kickin' It, in 2003, followed by a second, Ain't Just Temporary, in 2007. Loomis shines on guitar, keyboards, harp, and vocals. His music can be soul, as on cuts like “Legendary,” with slide guitar that has tone big as the Rockies. Or it be a relaxed groove like on the aply-named “Slow Lover,” where he blows a fine harmonica while Scott Free takes the guitar lead. Hamilton’s mentor, Bo Diddley, makes an appearance on “You Got to Wait,” where tremoloed guitar pushes the song along. “My Pen” is a pop tune that throws a few curve balls; slightly distorted rock chords mix with a big, funky 9th-chord workout and a big-toned solo that sum up Loomis’ style. Anyone who has tried to write a song will appreciate the lyric. Most of the tunes here are written by Loomis, and it’s obvious he gets it. From the New Orleans feel of “Best Worst Day” to the soul of “Good Enough,” it’s apparent he has learned his lessons well. His choice of covers is nice, too. A take on Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “Bow Wow” he keeps the inherent funkiness of the original, he also adds a bit of a rock flavor to it with a solo that’s about as far from Johnny’s sound as you can get. But it works nicely. While there’s nothing earth-shattering here, Loomis is a force to be reckoned with. Anyone so young who can play so many instruments this well and write fine songs is sure to be at the front of the line for awhile.

Joe Bonamassa - Time Clocks

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2021
Time: 56:50
Size: 130,2 MB
Label: J&R Adventures
Styles: Blues Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Pilgrimage - 0:55
 2. Notches - 7:03
 3. The Heart That Never Waits - 5:51
 4. Time Clocks - 7:07
 5. Questions And Answers - 4:09
 6. Mind’s Eye - 6:17
 7. Curtain Call - 7:31
 8. The Loyal Kind - 6:48
 9. Hanging On A Loser - 4:17
10. Known Unknowns - 6:48

Any time Joe Bonamassa announces a new album it’s one of the most anticipated albums of the year. In 2020, Bonamassa released Royal Tea, which was voted #1 on Blues Rock Review’s top 20 albums of 2020. Once again, Kevin Shirley joins Bonamassa in the producer’s chair while Bob Clearmountain (The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen) mixed it. Bonamassa recorded the album in New York City. Time Clocks begins with “Pilgrammage,” an instrumental which leads into the high powered first single, “Notches,” which has a memorable riff and begins the album on a banging note. Bonamassa wrote the track with Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke. “The Heart That Never Waits” follows and is Bonamassa’s tip of the hat to Robert Cray. The title track is unlike anything Bonamassa has recorded and continues his evolution as a songwriter. It seems as though Bonamassa and Kevin Shirley kept trying to push the envelope adding more layers and elements and the result is a pretty unique and powerful track. The album heads back into blues territory with “Questions and Answers” before “Mind’s Eye” which has a haunting intro that gives the listener a vibe similar to the feeling you get listening to the opening of “Sloe Gin.” “Mind’s Eye”, a co-write with James House, also features one of the album’s standout guitar solos. “Curtain Call” feels like it would fit right in on a Black Country Communion album and brings a Zeppelin vibe. This is rock music at its best. Speaking of great rock tracks, “The Loyal Kind” is just that. The track is a co-write with Bernie Marsden and features a blistering chorus with a bone crunching riff where Bonamassa belts, “I played a round with those tumbling dice… are you gonna spin around and betray me twice… I knew it all along and I hate when I’m right… I’m asking are you the loyal kind?” Time Clocks goes back to the blues with “Hanging On A Loser” before wrapping up with “Known Unknowns.” At this stage, Joe Bonamassa has very little left to prove but with Time Clocks, Bonamassa delivers his best album since The Ballad of John Henry. Bonamassa really digs deep lyrically on this album and it feels more personal. Of course, there is great guitar, but Joe’s songwriting has never been better. From start to finish, Time Clocks is a winner and shows why Bonamasa’s run as the current blues rock king is nowhere near over.

A pisco sour is an alcoholic cocktail of Peruvian origin that is typical of the cuisines from Peru and Chile. The drink's name comes from pisco, which is its base liquor, and the cocktail term sour, in reference to sour citrus juice and sweetener components. The Peruvian pisco sour uses Peruvian pisco as the base liquor and adds freshly squeezed lime juice, simple syrup, ice, egg white, and Angostura bitters. The Chilean version is similar, but uses Chilean pisco and Pica lime, and excludes the bitters and egg white. Other variants of the cocktail include those created with fruits like pineapple or plants such as coca leaves. :-)))

Blinddog Smokin' - Miss Blues Sittin' In With Blinddog Smokin'

Bitrate: 320K/s

 6. Sell My Monkey - 3:10
 7. Trapped - 4:54
 8. Leave Me Alone - 3:42
 9. Cold Mountains - 7:18

We have all seen the Blinddog Smokin' ads in the classifieds of the major blues mags. They are, of course, Laramie Wyoming's hardest working blues band. But who is Miss Blues? Hailing from Direct, TX, Dorothy Choncie Ellis has been singing her famous "Texas Shout" style of blues since the early 40s. The blues was a way of life in her early years. It was common to have Sunday dinner on the ground, walk barefoot to save her shoes, drink well and spring water, wear flour sacks dresses, pick cotton and feel a million miles from nowhere. This grand old lady of the blues uses her storied past to her advantage on this 9 track, 50 minute disc. With an aged and aching growl, Miss Blues has the perfect voice for "Goin Down Slow".
She and Carl share the vocal duties on the humorous "Comfortable Man" with its sexual lyrics. "Sinkin'" is dedicated to her stepmother and tells her tragic story. With conviction, lyrics are delivered which include: 'I had a little house, like a fool I gave him the title, now I ain't got no house and he even pawned my bible'. "Sell My Monkey" is an uptempo tune which is refreshing after a series of relaxed, traditional blues. Pure, electric blues that is played the way they used to feature on "More Jelly" and "Cold Mountains". From an interview in Southwest Blues magazine, Miss Blues is quoted, 'Each song I sing takes on its own individual form. I didn't get up one morning and say, hey, I am gonna be a blues singer. I lived the blues in the cotton patch, servant quarters, cooking in white kitchens, being broke, hungry, abusive grandmother, and feeling trapped in a bad situation.' That lifestyle has produced a raw, emotive, passion in her voice which leaps off the disc. Sure, its an acquired taste that won't necessarily attract new listeners but those who enjoy real blues will love it. ---Tim Holek, mnblues.com
A fifth CD by Wyoming blues-rock band Blinddog Smokin' but here they host special guest Miss Blues (Dorothy Ellis). The step was absolutely right. Lady brings enormous passion to this album with her raw and deep voice which in combination with band's work (particular attention should be paid to amazing guitar playing of Jason Coomes) delivers emotional, lowdown, driving Blues. In spite of what is plaid, covers or original compositions, result is all the same - true Blues.
This lady sings the BLUES! Bad thing is Dorothy Ellis was discovered late. Hope it's not too late. This is what Blinddog's official web-page says about her: "Miss Blues is a carnival with a dress on. How an entertainer of this magnitude, has slipped through the cracks of fame and fortune is a sad testimony to the MTV generation, that apparently has no room on their tv screens for a heart this big. This woman is more fun than a tickling uncle. Her personality spills all over the room like the bubbles of a run-away washing machine. And she can sing! Like the primal scream of a locomotive bursting out of a mountain tunnel."

More successful as a songwriter than a singer, Bobby Charles was nonetheless an important contributor to Louisiana music in both respects. He authored several hits for key artists in the early days of rock & roll (including Bill Haley and Fats Domino), and although he recorded mostly in obscurity, he emerged as one of the founding fathers of swamp pop. Robert Charles Guidry was born February 21, 1938, in the Cajun-country town of Abbeville, LA, and grew up listening to traditional Cajun music. As a teenager, he discovered rock & roll and rhythm & blues, and began singing with a band called the Cardinals, who performed at local dances. During this period, he wrote a song called "See You Later, Alligator," which particularly impressed a Crowley, LA, record-store owner who happened to know Chess Records founder Leonard Chess.

His 2019 debut EP “Figure It Out” was well received worldwide by critics, radios, and fans and secured him spots in festivals nationally and internationally. The new album features 12 original songs showcasing fresh and unapologetic songwriting with stories about love, heartache, hardships, and today’s society. With the combination of soul, funk, and blues, “Ready For You” presents a diverse, vibrant, and mature sound from start to finish. Luca Kiella showcases visceral songwriting, tight grooves, and an expertise on the piano and Hammond Organ that will touch the feelings of any blues, funk, and soul lover. Album  Opening with Till Tomorrow, with it's New Orleans rhythm. Kiella, who sings and plays keys is joined by Aaron Weistrop on guitar, Paul Hall on drums, William Baggett on bass, Michelle Hallman on backing vocals, Mark Mullins on trombone, Bobby Campo on trumpet and Brad Walker on tenor sax. R&B styling on Desperate Train to Nowhere shows a solid radio melody with nicely paired vocals and warm Wurlitzer backing. Funk peppered Ready for You has just the right spring to appeal to the adult radio audience. With it's memorable melody and vocal work, it's a solid entry. Another track with a cool New Orleans style rhythm is Wanna Love You Tonight. Kiella really has the piano roll down and Hall's drum rhythm really take control and Baggett's bass line is spot on. Wrapping the release is Is There Any Love Left For Me?, a beautiful ballad in the flavor of James Taylor or George Harrison. Nicely presented, vocal over piano and strings by Chuck Bontrager, this is a strong closer.

Davy Knowles - What Happens Next

10. Hell to Pay - 4:40
11. Wake Me Up When The Nightmare's Over - 4:30
12. If I Ever Meet My Maker - 4:20

On his aptly-titled Provogue Records’ debut, What Happens Next, out October 22nd, roots singer-songwriter and guitarist Davy Knowles boldly steps forward with timeless and cohesive songwriting; sleek modern production; and a lyrical, play-for-the-song guitar approach informed from soul, folk, rock, and blues. The 12-song album is just as influenced by The Black Keys, Fantastic Negrito, Gary Clark Jr., as it is Muddy Waters, Junior Kimbrough, and R.L. Burnside. It is a cohesive body of work rather than a collection of disparate songs. “When it came time to record this album, it was all about supporting the songs as opposed to ‘how quickly I can get to the guitar solo’,” the Isle of Man-born, Chicago-based artist says laughing. “I’m not a purist, and the way for roots music to stay relevant is to adapt and progress.” Produced by Eric Corne (John Mayall, Joe Walsh, Joe Bonamassa), What Happens Next is something of a departure from Knowles’s fired-up and reverent take on blues and Americana, featuring poetic songwriting and soulfully emotive vocals that steal the show. The 12-song body of work offers forth a peaks-and-valleys album experience winding through brawny riffs, jazzy blues balladry, and vintage soul before concluding with one of Knowles’s most personal songs released to date. Throughout it all, his guitar playing is brilliantly understated, his rhythm work is deft and dynamic. The album bursts open with, “Light Of The Moon,” a swaggering riff-rocker replete with vibey 1960s organ flourishes, hooky minor-tinged refrains, and impassioned soul-drenched vocals. Here, Davy’s lead breaks drip sustain, vibrato, and sublime bluesy melodicism. Knowles first burst onto the scene at the age of 20 with his band Back Door Slam, garnering rave reviews, making national US television appearances (Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America), earning extensive triple-A radio airplay, and achieving two Top 5 Billboard Blues charting albums. Since then he has been solo, and he independently released two more studio albums, 2014’s The Outsider and 2016’s Three Miles From Avalon, which also hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Blues chart. He’s earned plum endorsements from D’Addario strings, PRS guitars, Bludotone amps, and Celestion speakers, became the first musician in history to play live directly to the International Space Station from Mission Control in Houston, and held his own sharing the stage with such heavyweight artists as The Who, Jeff Beck, Gov’t Mule, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kid Rock, Joe Bonamassa, Sonny Landreth, Peter Frampton, Joe Satriani, and Sammy Hagar, among many others. Despite the songs on What Happens Next featuring concise lead guitar playing, fans of Knowles’s fleet-fingered lead style fear not for the blues-rock fire still burns inside him. Knowles says: “This album taught me about restraint in terms of guitar playing. I had to reign it in to let the songs breathe, but I am looking forward to reimagining them and stretching out when we play live.”

JP LeBlanc - Late All Day

 8. Late All Day - 3:53
 9. Spoonful - 3:17
10. Folsom - 4:21
11. 24/7 Boogie - 3:03

This is JP LeBlanc’s first album in 15 years, and man, was it worth waiting for. The native of Bathurst, New Brunswick was somewhat of a young prodigy, infected by the blues at the age of 11, picking up guitar and joining high-powered jams as a teenager and recording his first CD at the age of 21. Now in his mid-thirties, LeBlanc has created an album that shows great chops, vocals and most of all, a great feeling for the blues. No wonder, much of it was recorded with his mentor Joe Murphy, a legendary Atlantic Canada performer who started off with the great Dutch Mason nearly 50 years ago. Lots of growling harp here, tasty slide guitar and passionate vocals.
LeBlanc was once dubbed the “Baby Stevie Ray Vaughan,” but he has obviously gone much deeper into the well of Delta blues. On “Aberdeen,” he starts off spare and moaning, accompanied only by playing slide on his National-style steel guitar before the band kicks in at a rollicking tempo. It’s great to hear clean acoustic guitar over a full rhythm section. On “Get Ready,” he plays some mean acoustic licks over a relentless shuffle. The Piedmont influence is evident even on a cover version of “Folsom Prison Blues.”  Recorded at Sand Reed Studio in Petit-Rocher, NB and at Michael Reid Studio in Halifax, this album should get recognition from blues fans far from the Maritimes. Almost all the parts on the album were played by Guthrie himself. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The only thing that Guthrie Kennard started early was his musical career. At the age of 14, he played with friend and fellow musician Joe Russell in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. He left home to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, where Joe signed with Bill Lowry's agency, which included artists such as Billy Joe Royal, Classics IV and Joe South. In Atlanta, Guthrie met people who were successful in doing what they loved; his path was chosen.

“I’m a force of nature,” Sue Foley declares on “Hurricane Girl,” one of the three originals on her blazing new album, Pinky’s Blues out October 22 on Stony Plain Records. It’s no idle boast. The Canada native and award-winning blues guitarist/singer has proven herself to be just that since her 1992 debut, Young Girl Blues, which introduced a blues firebrand who married killer guitar chops with a voice that oozed both sex and innocence. It’s no wonder that, still in her early 20s at the time, she showed she could hang with the big boys in the music hotbed of Austin, Texas. All these years later, she’s still putting her own indelible stamp on the music. Pinky’s Blues – the title refers to her nickname for her trademark pink paisley Telecaster – is a relatively stripped-down affair. Foley, bassist Jon Penner, and drummer Chris “Whipper” Layton handle the bulk of the work, with producer Mike Flanigin adding organ on two tracks and Jimmie Vaughan playing rhythm guitar on “Hurricane Girl.” The 12-song set was cut live in the studio in three days, giving the music a thrilling immediacy while highlighting Foley’s all-around talents. Those talents include writing. Here, however, Foley shifts her usual balance from originals to non-originals, because the aim of the set is to pay tribute to some of her and her accompanists’ favorite blues and roots sounds. One of her own numbers, the hurtling boogie “Dallas Man,” continues that theme: It was inspired by thoughts of all the elite and groundbreaking guitarists who hailed from the Dallas area, from Blind Lemon Jefferson to T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, and Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan. “Just can’t catch that Dallas man,” she sings.
On numbers such as the propulsive, Elmore James-style “Hurricane Girl,” Frankie Lee Sims’ “Boogie Real Low,” and Willie Dixon’s “When the Cat’s Away, the Mice Play,” Foley brings fire and swagger. But on Angela Strehli’s aching “Say It’s Not So,” she reveals a more tender and vulnerable side. The same goes for the Jimmy and Lillie Mae Donley swamp-pop ballad “Think It Over,” with Foley’s shimmering guitar weaving around Flanigin’s Hammond B3 to enhance the sultry vibe. The two instrumentals also highlight Foley’s range. The self-penned title track, which leads off the album, is a string-bending exercise in fat-toned muscularity. Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown’s breakneck “Okie Dokie Stomp,” on the other hand, shows off her fleet-fingered dexterity.“Two Bit Texas Town” is another number by Strehli, a first-rate Lone Star soul-blues singer herself. The song fits the theme of the album perfectly. Mentioning Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Jimmy Reed, it’s about being inspired by the power of music to dare to dream of a bigger and better life.“They were mighty, mighty men … they laid it on so cool,” Foley sings. She lays it on pretty cool herself, and with Pinky’s Blues she again honors the legacy of such giants and the inspiration they provided by using her talents to keep the music fresh and vital – to make you think pink when you think blues.

"Road Ends In Water" is the debut album from Memphis-based band TURCHI, a Southern Blues Rock slide-guitar-boogie-kudzu-music duo featuring Reed Turchi (slide guitar, vocals) and Cameron Weeks (drums)."The spiritual flame passed from Fred McDowell to R.L. Burnside to Kenny Brown now lights up the guitar band of TURCHI. With an assist from likewise rowdy North Mississippi Allstar Luther Dickinson, the crunch and slide of this blue trio assures that the kudzu boogie will long continue. Their own sweatbox stomps and moonshine grinds throb to a hill country heartbeat, the same moan 'n' drone one which crowned the trinity of Marshall, Tate, and Panola Counties as the groove capital of the world. From the constantly writhing tangle of twin serpentine guitars (one of which always employs that hulking brass slide on the cover of Road Ends in Water), you'd swear TURCHI are rogue Chulahoma jukesters. And not tobacco-belt Tar Heels headquartered out of North Carolina. No doubt leader Reed Turchi has been absorbing every drop of local ritual up in those Mississippi hills while rooting out backwoods savants (like Little Joe Ayers) to record for his own Devil Down label. So with the crack, then crash, of a drum kit, Muddy's "I Can't Be Satisfied" and their own carnal "Do For You" bolt out. The same propulsion works for "Shake 'Em," the regional anthem that's been putting pelvises into motion ever since its preview inside juke houses many moons ago. "Keep On Drinking," however, doesn't even try to get it on, instead sniffing out a rat, then tending to its extermination. It's a cold shot--but danceable, nonetheless. The real terror comes when being fed into the maw of the beat, "Dr. Recommended (Satisfaction Guaranteed)." It's slow qualor--Turchi and Dickinson's filth guitars sideswiping one another down a the bottom of a gutbucket--is just how Nature intended sleaze to sound."  - Dennis Rozanski, BluesRag Magazine

The purest honesty test I know is the human voice in song as evaluated through the human ear by people who value integrity above technology and gimmickry. The voice needn't be the strongest or the prettiest, because honesty trumps those qualities every time. A voice that can connect you emotionally with truth, evokes inside the listener feelings of passion and not without compassion, feelings of lust but not without love, feelings of fear, but not without courage. Such a voice reveals the pity and power in a person's soul and tells us who they are beyond the clothes, the flesh, the words and the masks. Such a voice often tells us who we are as well. Dorothy Ellis has such a voice. The cool thing about an honest voice is that it can convey its value on the first note and it doesn't matter who's listening. Human beings are innately aware when they come upon the real thing. There's a Western movie where a guy who has never seen a real wild Indian warrior asks a veteran how he'll know one if he sees one. "Don't worry", says the Vet.  "You'll just know" . Miss Blues is a living blues legend. This lady CAN SING!!! Songbirds have nothing on her. If you like your blues with attitude and spice, you’ll love Miss Blues. And she can cook!!! Miss Blues and her blues band have played festivals all over the United States and the world! She was inducted into the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame in 2004! In 2007, Miss Blues was voted the Best Blues Band in Oklahoma and received a "Woody" award from the Oklahoma Gazette which called her "the state’s first lady of the blues - all soul and she lets you know it! Belting out songs in a signature way that her many admirers have come to call the Texas Shout!" Miss Blues has been featured (cover story) in both the February 2000 and October 2007 issues of Southwest Blues Magazine. She was also a featured artist at the 2007 Arkansas Heritage and Blues Festival (formerly known as the King Biscuit Blues Festival), in addition to headlining many other blues venues and festivals all over the United States and Europe.
