It was determined from day 1 that their sound was going to be nurtured by lessons well honed from the past yet still have the fresh special songwriting and fat sound for today’s world.

The Bayou Bandits - Arizona Stepson

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2023
Time: 32:46
Size: 75,7 MB
Label: Self-Released
Styles: Southern Rock

 6. Ain't Gonna Drown - 3:44
 7. Arizona Stepson - 3:31
 8. Curse On Me - 3:24
 9. Gasoline - 3:45

Nine tracks strong, the self-released Arizona Stepson has been described as “a heavy southern rock punch in the mouth that brings listeners back to Rock ‘n roll 101. With soulful melodies and organ to dirty blues driven guitars and harmonicas, the  album should take you back to church the southern rock way.   Opening with the single ‘Roll On Mississippi’, a boot stomping, hell raiser where frontman Joshua Strickland pays homage to the Mississippi River that runs through his hometown of Walker, LA. After listening to the new single, co-producer Shawn White jokingly stated, “Can’t get any more southern rock than that…You have mama, Jesus, and the Mississippi River all in the first damn verse!” It is a heavy blues guitar driven southern rock song written about wherever he is in the world, the mighty Mississippi will always be there to guide him home. On ‘Born to Lose’ lead guitarist, Jeremy Magid’s Fender Jaguar comes in driving harder than a NASCAR driver at Talladega. Initially written as an assignment given to Strickland from a therapist, the song has quickly morphed into the band’s favourite song to play live. When asked, Strickland stated, “I was going through a very dark time and it started as a blues song. However, we wanted it to be more in your face.” Strickland wails on his harmonica throughout ‘Born to Lose’, and while written as an assignment the song’s performance takes us all back to music school. The album’s closer, ‘Gasoline’ , as Strickland puts it, “is a real punch to the face.”  A gritty harmonica laced southern rock song, that speaks about the peaks and valleys of the struggle trying to make it as a singer, not taking no for an answer and never letting others tread on himself and his band. As for the album’s title, Strickland revealed, “It came from me paying homage to the people of Arizona who really took me in when I moved here and even though I ain’t from here I still feel like I’m part of the family.”  The band is completed by Jay Kereny on bass, and Dan Johnson drums and percussion and will be touring the USA shortly.

The Fat Tones Stealing the show at major music venues, blowing away audiences, and winning award after award - both collectively and individually - is what the music industry has come to expect from The Fat Tones. Sometimes fate allows all the puzzle pieces to fall into place just the way we want them to, and that is exactly what happened one fruitful night at a club in Spokane, Washington a few years back. Bobby Patterson (Lead Guitar), Bob Ehrgott (Bass Guitar), and Mike Hays (Drums) got into a jam that electrified the audience and had them screaming "Encore!" Since then, The Fat Tones' musical skills have evolved into a high-impact, progressive fusion of Blues and Rock that leaves their audiences begging for more. Precise synergy of rhythm, percussion and world class guitar playing, topped off with fun, fresh lyrics and pitch perfect 3-part harmonies best describes the magic this band consistently delivers.

Scott Sharrard - Ante Up

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2009
Time: 41:12
Size: 95,2 MB
Label: Self-Released
Styles: Rock/Blues Rock/Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Put Your Soul Records On - 4:46
 2. Riverside - 3:27
 3. 8 Days On The Road - 4:05
 4. Losing Faith In You - 6:11
 5. All Day Sucker - 5:38
 6. Stone - 5:38
 7. In The Right Place - 4:09
 8. It Makes No Difference - 7:13

As you pull Scott Sharrard’s third album, Ante Up, out of its jacket, you get a tinge of vinyl-era reminisce, and one would imagine this was intended. The album feels like a throwback to the glory of fresh needles and Hi Records- even the album art comes off as a bit of homage to the 12” legacy. So if we are talking vinyl records, then we are talking 45 minute records. At 41 minutes and change, Ante Up is an enjoyable ride with clear intent right from the “Put Your Soul Records On” opener. The album builds through the lively “Riverside” and the Howard Tate nugget, “8 Days on The Road.”All guitarists owe Riley B. King an unpayable debt, and the slow-burning tribute of “Losing My Faith In You” is a blues delight that buffers the surprising rearrange of Stevie Wonder’s “All Day Sucker,” which moves between a Texas shuffle and the original’s backbeat. One of Sharrard’s three originals, “Stone” is the one song that sits apart from the soul/blues synergy, and the hard rocking nod to Hendrix’s “Machine Gun” adds welcome diversity. “In The Right Place” by Gregg Allman Band-mate Jay Collins, and the underrated Band masterpiece “It Makes No Difference” are a supple, subtle close to the album. Stripped- bare of its harmony vocals, and down in its ensemble orchestrations- “Difference” is offered with an intimate passion that is near unsettling at first, yet serves as a finale fit enough.Ante Up hearkens back to an era when a true music lover had a relationship with their album collection. Taken as a whole, this solid slab of soul is satisfying in ways now lost on the American majority. Sharrard’s quartet includes drummer Diego Voglino, bassist Jeff Hanley, and keyboardist Brian Charette, with Collins adding horns throughout.

David Brewer's style is simply unique. The songs he writes himself are excellent and the covers he does are often an improvement of the originals - so why do covers at all ? His atmospheric guitar playing just oozes with that special blues feeling.

Matthew Scott - Mirrors

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2023
Time: 42:46
Size: 98,6 MB
Label: Self-Released
Styles: Blues/Blues Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. The Whisper - 4:59
 2. Where You Been - 3:44
 3. Bury the Tracks - 3:08
 4. Mirrors - 4:10
 5. Rest Them Old Bones - 4:53
 6. Cold Blooded Story - 4:18
 7. Are We All the Same - 4:04
 8. Amy - 4:55
 9. Reflection - 3:28
10. Way of the World - 5:03

Mirrors is Scott’s debut in the world of album releases. Released October 13th, Mirrors is anything but a spontaneous venture into the curating side of all those guitars. He has been on this journey for years honing his craft performing for live audiences and in studio for social media content. To record the album, Scott, and band members Glendon Floyd (guitar), Austin Pollard (drums), and Michael Rose (bass) traveled to Arlyn Studios in Austin, Texas. Jacob Sciba (Gary Clark Jr, Government Mule) managed the in-studio live recordings for the ten tracks. Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Prince) oversaw the mixing. The album also features appearances by Lewis Stephens on organ (Freddie King) and Lauren Cervantes and Angela Miller (The Black Pumas) as background vocalists. The title track “Mirrors” has had live and studio videos on his YouTube channel for four years with rave reviews (comments). A common thread among his followers is along the lines of “always knew you could play, but those vocals!” or more simply “Wow! Matt you can sing!”.  Sing he does with a Black Crowes / Gregg Allman southern rock style. It may take several listens to get through the incredible guitar work track after track to even pay attention to the vocals, much less the lyrics, which are also thoughtful and heartfelt. The album opens with “Whisper” which is an oxymoron given its heavy jams and beats with a sound reminiscent of Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks”.  “Where You Been” is another YouTube carryover where the official music video came out a year ago. Showcasing Matt’s guitar chops, its tastefully placed acoustic solo, and backup vocals, this song has had fans drooling for this release. “Rest Them Old Bones” is an inspiring song about perseverance ‘I can’t surrender with so much left to say’. “Are We All the Same” with its hard driving fuzzy guitar and drum blasts surface the frustration of what’s wrong in today’s world, ‘another piece in the hands of a kid’, ‘another kiss on silicone lips’. “Reflection” may be my favorite and the only instrumental on the album. It’s another that made a YouTube appearance years ago with Matthew stating “This is a definite nod to some heroes of mine” on the post. Matthew didn’t share those heroes’ names on the post, but an auditory guess might include the initials SRV. Sandwiched between “Are We All the Same” and “Reflection”, “Amy” is another attention getter with its slower melodic appeal to a distant ex-love ‘tell me are you lost or are you crazy’. An acoustic ballad with electric highlights, “Way of the World” closes the album way too early.Below, I’ll list can’t miss tracks and projected big hit per the protocols of writing this review. Honestly, listen to it all. Put it on repeat. Add it to your music app playlists. The album is now available on streaming outlets, check it out. Your life will be fuller for it. Matthew Scott has channeled all his experience and passion into ten exceptional tracks that will whisk you back in time and conjure personal reflections (wasn’t that the instrumental?). These songs can stand apart in any playlist and together form a very good album.

Joe T. Cook blows one of the most expressive, fluid harps in town. His strong, passionate vocals, solid originals, and deep blues roots always makes for a solid show. He has a tight, solid band to call upon with the talented John Franken on lead, John's brother Mike (a Cannon Falls resident) on drums, and normally Jimmy Flynn on bass. Tonight the very capable bassist John Schroder was filling in on bass. This tight, solid blues band plays some great, old blues songs with deep roots and achieves a sound that seems to bridge the great blues from the 40's, 50's and 60's to the blues of today. Their sound has a retro quality with a hipness and style that's right at home today.
Joe kicked things off strong with the steady rolling "Doggie Blues." His deep, rich and full harp sound played well off John's crisp, clear, multi-tone guitar riffs rippling out from his hollow body guitar. Joe brought his smooth, fluid harp down low for some great repeating riffs and up high and penetrating. On their signature song, "Longshot," Joe's hip vocals, his nice, low, rich harp sound, and the band's great, tight playing made this a highlight. "Winter Time Blues," something all Minnesota natives understand, gave John and Joe a chance to shine on their instruments. Joe's powerful, soaring harp, followed by some nice, slowly bent notes, and low, grinding effect drove the song. John's piercing, ringing chords, bell-like chord progressions added texture and passion. The song slowly built in tempo and volume to a great harp flourish finish by Joe.Joe showcased three new songs that should see their way on to their next CD. "Honey Wine" is a slow rolling, soulful blues tribute to summertime. Joe's nice circular harp riffs, short, choppy riffs, and expressive playing drove the song. His vocals were strong, clear and filled with passion. John's brought his guitar down slow and soulful, his reverberating guitar licks adding to the atmosphere of the song. "Reflective Blues," also know humorously as the 'Distended Belly Blues' is a candid, honest look at growing older, yet with a strong streak of optimism in the future. "Gravy Train" is a strong double-shuffle, with Joe moving smoothly and quickly from hip, passionate vocals to strong harp trills and quickly repeating riffs. All the while John's stinging guitar licks providing the foundation for Joe's singing and playing. Blues fans have to love Joe's selection of covers, which featured some great songs like "Long Legged Woman" that just don't get played enough. Joe does a great job providing a traditional harp sound in these cases, while his hip vocals and the wrinkles the band adds on all instruments allows such songs to connect with today's audiences. The band wrapped things up with a rollicking, fast rolling "Snatch It Back, and Hold It." Joe held, bent, blew notes fast and strong. He brought it down low and growling with his vocals. The small but enthusiastic crowd had not had enough, so the band gave them one more. When Joe's last lingering harp riff faded away, blues in Cannon Falls was done until the Longshots next visit back to town on June 21st.The Mill Street Tavern has a great small, intimate music room in half of an old restored building in Cannon Falls. The high, old ceiling, refinished wood floors rich with character, the rough limestone interior walls of the bar room side of the building, deck out back, and ample antique signs and pictures of local interest lining the walls add to the atmosphere of the place. And the large, framed black and white shot of Joe T. Cook seems right at home, just like his solid blues sound.

Sometimes you slap in a CD and go ... oh man they are good. Live Style! by Italian band Family Style is one of those CDs, there is so much energy in the music that these blues are a joy to listen to. That the disc was recorded live just adds that extra little bit to the experience. There may not be a lot of musicians on the CD, but they do create a wonderfully full sound. You have Marco Limido (guitar), Franco Limido (vocal and harmonica), Davide Bianchi (bass) and Pablo Leoni (drums and cajon). Honey Davis and G. Schinina also join in. Throughout the music I get a sense they are enjoying themselves on stage, and that is a part of what makes the overall sound so good. The CD starts off with "Back to the Chicken Shack," a short instrumental that gets things going. Then comes "Rollin' Over New Orleans," which picks up the pace and tugs you onto the dance floor as the song goes along. "Livin', Lovin', Drinkin' " has a mellower sound in the music that slides into the lyrics' mood, if not their pace."Pub Crawl" is a strangely fun song -- naturally the song is about a night of heavy drinking. "Every Time You Smile" is a rollicking good piece that abounds in energy. This is followed by the laidback, long lines of "Prisoner of the Blues." They return with another fast-paced, energetic song in "Mellow Down Easy," with the drums adding drive to the energy. The intensity remains in "Family Style," an instrumental in which the musicians pass the melody back and forth. And then they come back with another fast song, "Caledonia," and they maintain the pace for most of the song (almost 10 minutes worth)."Big Boss Man" seems to have a pulse to it that hooks you from the start. You can hear the crowd a bit before they kick into "Blues Jam," which is a live session. They finish off with "Little Bluebird" -- it too is laidback and you can sense that the night is wrapping up.Live Style is a slice of beautiful music, and is well worth the journey.

In his time with the Chambers Brothers, Lester Chambers created some of the most influential sounds of the 60s, with a tasty blend of psychedelica, soul, and blues that rocked the airwaves with hits such as “Time Has Come Today”, “I Can’t Turn You Loose”, and “Love, Peace and Happiness”. Having spent time with some of the most impactful artists in modern music history, such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin, Lester has been there for it all. His history makes for an intriguing listen, as this history comes to a head on It’s Time, his first studio album on the Explosive Records label. On “You Give Me Love” a rising and descending horn line kicks off the record, while Lester sings about the struggles of not receiving the love that he wants. The background vocals are provided by none other than George, Willie and Joseph Chambers, thus being a reunion of the brothers. Together with a variety of harmonica solos, including one that interplays with horns from Bill “Stumuk” Nugent (Frank Zappa), the track makes for a solid opener. Furthermore, the stomping drums from Wilby Fletcher (Harry Belafonte, The Stylistics), and the psychedelic, spacey guitar tone from guitarist Johnny Turner, add a sense of 60s familiarity despite the modern recording (https://lesterchambers.com).

This is a great album from the late Jimmy Witherspoon, backed by his great friend Robben Ford, and members of the great jazz fusion group, The Yellowjackets. The musicianship from the band, especially the guitar work from Robben Ford is just glorious. There could not have been a better band assembled to play some of the beautiful jazz blues tracks here. Veronique Gayot, the French blues-rock singer, is unique! It’s a concentrate of energy like you rarely find. His voice is unique, recognizable among all. Its expressiveness resembles that of a wild cat. She is strong and direct but nonetheless vulnerable. She sings as if one life wasn't enough. His wild, untamed voice can range from the gentle purrs of a little cat to the screams and howls that some critics compare to Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant. On stage Veronique occupies every corner of the space and that’s where she feels at home! Authentic and with real depth, it takes the viewer into a whirlwind of emotions. The public enthusiastically follows her on this journey.Veronique Gayot has something to tell you! His songs vary between Blues and Rock, without forgetting ballads, in the style of the early 70s. All arranged with very modern sounds. For her new album she worked in close collaboration with German producer Timo Gross who, too, has been a performing artist for many years.Veronique Gayot is a true artist! She never compromised. Of course a woman like her doesn't fall from the sky. She lived, intensely, raised a child. She sang in the shadow of success with musicians of all genres. It has never become smooth and its driving force is not fame but curiosity and the quest for authentic development. To complete the portrait of Veronique Gayot, we must also talk about her second passion: the Fine Arts. We find in her paintings and sculptures the same wild and untamed expression as in her songs. Be curious and come discover Veronique and her group on stage.

Tony Edwards was a good man and a man also of deep-seated enthusiasms. He had a passion for, and a great interest in, Deep Purple and its various member’s careers, as well as a genuine enjoyment of the band’s music. He was the reason that Richie and I were able to get together at the end of 1967 and the sole reason too for our being able to form the band that changed our lives. Without him and this early financial and emotional support, there would have been no Deep Purple. He was a rock and a firm foundation on which we could build our musical house.

Guitarist-vocalist Nick Vigarino and growling blues diva Kathi McDonald (a former “Ikette” with Ike and Tina Turner) are the headliners in this brazen cavalcade, which offers treats ranging from bass-pumped, funky swamp blues (an old fashioned sex/food allegory “Earl’s Gumbo”) to acoustic piano-driven classic jazz (a straight-from-the-heart, disarmingly soulful read of “God Bless the Child”). Highlights include the rockin’ dobro-driven rager “Letting a Good Man Go,” which recalls Bonnie Raitt in wilder days, and the elegant twilight-blue ballad, “Baby You Know I Love You,” which finds McDonald building in vocal intensity to a soul-stripping wail.

The Tucci Band is a funk, R&B, blues, jazz, rock, often indescribable style mashup featuring a unique, funky, danceable sound.Doc Tucci is the main composer and cat-herder. Doc's work on guitar and vocals is widely respected and merges rock and soul, vintage and modern, yin and yang; Don Mark is the sax player who is a solo artist in hs own right; Harry DeBusk and Mike Tucci, bass and percussion respectively, hold the whole mess together with their funky, sometimes syncopated but always musical groove. It's not rare for many stellar players to sit in with us, leading to an unpredictable set of predictably great music.Speaking of stellar players, many of our peeps will remember us as The Toler-Tucci Band, back when our principal was none other than Dan Toler of the Allman Bros and Gregg Allman Band. Dan lost his battle with ALS, but left an indelible mark on the band. We are carrying on in his stead, and his inimitable sound can be heard in all of our work and performances. Long Live Dan!Tucci has recently released a CD entitled "Olivia," featuring blues vocals and guitar great Larry McCray. This is on the heels of our CD with Dan Toler (Dan's final recording effort) entitled "Doc's Hideaway."

Eric Sardinas - Midnight Junction

Year: 2023

 1. Long Shot - 4:53

10. White Lightnin' - 4:33
11. Emilia - 4:03

‘Midnight Junction’, that is the title of the sixth album from Eric Sardinas which will hit the stores these days. The Florida-born guitarist moved to around in his homeland before landing in California in 1990. At this time of his career, Sardinas played on the street and in small pubs to make his living.Known for great songs and wild performance, Sardinas could catch the attention of no less than Steve Vai who offered him a record deal. Since 1999, Sardinas released a few longplayers and with ‘Midnight Junction’ the next strike is waiting in the starting box.For the album, the slide guitarist gets support by Chris Frazier (Whitesnake, Foreigner) on drums, Koko Powell (Lenny Kravitz, Sheila E) on bass guitar and David Schulz (The Goo Goo Dolls, Bo Diddley) on keys and organ. Furthermore, it is Charlie Musselwhite, who contributes with the sound of the harmonica, completing the kind of all-start team around this album.‘Midnight Junction’ features thirteen songs and it all starts with ‘Long Shot’. The song has been revealed as a single already earlier and is an entertaining blend of blues and rock. This kind of music is catchy and at the same time away for the worn-out path of mainstream.‘Said and Done’ might be the credo of Sardinas. In this case however it is an upbeat song that fires on all cylinders.A song one shouldn’t miss is the thumping ‘Swamp Cooler’. A southern swing and Musselwhite’s harmonica are the driving forces of this pretty cool instrumental.Sardinas started on the street and can maintain the spirit to date. ‘Lock and Key’ is a song the reflects it but actually it is the entire album that transports such an authentic streel spirit, which is what makes the difference to many other releases. You can drop the needle wherever you want, you will always get a great song in return. Although driven sometimes by a bluesy melancholy, the album contains a constant factor of hope and a good vibe.‘Midnight Junction’ is a blues rock album that showcases great craftsmanship. Sardinas loves to play music and it seems like making an album is a nice side effect but not the essence of motivation. By this approach the result is honest music that sounds real and reflects the ups and downs of life. Down-to-earth music for folks that honor stellar blues rock with a street-approach.

Sept. 2008 - Terry Blersh, veteran guitarist and singer-songwriter has just released his self-titled debut CD. If you're a fan of Canadian blues and roots music, you've probably seen him, doing his own thing or backing up many of your favourite artists, on stage and in the studio. The record features nine of Terry's original tunes and one blazing cover, Jimi Hendrix's "Fire". Blues, rhythm & blues, rock 'n roll and jazz influences are all evident, with Terry's smooth vocals, fiery guitar and clever writing, tying it all together. Recorded and mixed by ace engineer Jeremy Darby (Lou Reed, Eric Clapton, Joe Jackson) of The Canterbury Music Company, the record features some of Canada's finest musicians; Denis Keldie, Al Cross, John Mays, Garth Hudson, Lance Anderson, Mike Sloski, Charlie Cooley, Garth Vogan, Tom Griffiths and Alec Fraser. Toronto, Canada native Terry Blersh began singing and playing guitar at a young age. Terry's first influences were early rock 'n roll, Elvis, Sam Cooke, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Band, Stax, Motown, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and local guitar legends, Dominic Troiano and Freddy Keeler. It wasn't long before he became aware of the music and artists that had influenced his heroes. That led to a musical journey back to where it all came from, blues and jazz, and the music of Albert King, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles and Nat King Cole. In the Canadian tradition, Terry played around Toronto and The Great White North in various bands. Of note was blues/funk band Wooden Teeth with blues great Michael Pickett and guitarist extraordinaire, John Tilden. In 1982, Terry stepped out on his own with The Terry Blersh Band, playing a mix of original material and rhythm & blues standards. Terry enjoyed success on the Toronto club scene, and as the 90's rolled around, found his guitar skills very much in demand as he began to record and perform with a long list of artists (see below). He continued to work with his own band, back up others and composed and produced music for theatre and television, all the while concentrating on his song writing and working towards the goal of recording a CD of his own. With the 2008 release of his new self-titled debut CD, Terry Blersh is back in the spotlight and making some noise! Check it out! Terry has performed and/or recorded with many of Canada's top blues/roots artists and producers including Garth Hudson, Danny Brooks, The Cameo Blues Band, Michael Pickett, Rita Chiarelli, Dean McTaggert, The Gary Kendall Band, Chuck Jackson, The Johnny Max Band, Michael Fonfara, Lance Anderson, Richard Bell, Kathryn Popham, George Olliver, Steven Ambrose, Danny B, Robbie Rox, Robbie Lane & The Disciples, and many more.

Instrumentation:
Jimmy Bowskill - lead vocals, guitar, piano
Wayne Deadder - bass
Dan Neill - drums

Jimmy burst onto the scene on B.B. King's birthday of all times. They not only share the same birth date, but also the same laidback kindness, generosity, humbleness and respect for the music they play and the musicians who share the stage. Inspired by the late, great Robert Johnson, Jimmy taught himself to play and sing by interpreting by sight and sound but in his own natural style. At the tender age of 11, Jimmy was invited to join Jeff Healey onstage and has since become an international enigma. He has been selling out theatres, touring internationally and gaining a wide fan base. His music, though heavily blues influenced blurs the genres and captivates a young and new audience. For Joe Bonamassa, the UK “guitar gods” of the sixties were the gateway drug that led him to develop a passion for the blues. He cites hearing John Mayall & the Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton (the “Beano” album) as a particularly revelatory encounter. That seminal album, along with the first Paul Butterfield LP, The Blues Project Live at the Café Au Go Go, and a few other white-kids-play-the-blues collections, led many a bedazzled young lad or lass to seek out the hard stuff—Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, the Three Kings, John Lee Hooker, the list goes on.The “Beano” album was over ten years old by the time Bonamassa was born, and its reverential takes on Chicago blues had long since morphed into the bone-crushing blues-rock of the Jeff Beck Group, Led Zeppelin, the early version of Fleetwood Mac, and other off-shoots of the London blues scene. The title of Bonamassa’s back-to-the-blues diptych is borrowed from a cut on another enormously-influential album of the ‘sixties, the Jeff Beck Group’s Truth. Twenty years ago, he covered that Beck/Stewart number in the first of what turns out to be a two-volume set in which he re-visits some of the talismanic moments of his immersion in the blues. For this second excursion into the modern blues canon, Bonamassa relies on his core group of close associates: producer and guitarist Josh Smith and JB have co-produced sessions for other artists, and keyboard ace Reese Wynans, bassist Calvin Turner, and drummer Lamar Carter are their go-to session men. Turner also provided string and horn arrangements on some tracks.Blues Deluxe Vol. 2 references a fairly specific sub-set of the blues tradition, and a slightly different one than JB conjured up in Volume 1. The arrangements lean toward Memphis R&B while the guitar solos reference Chicago blues by way of late-sixties London. Imagine there’s a juke joint at the corner of Beale Street, Memphis, and Wardour Street, Soho, and let’s have a gander inside.Bonamassa doesn’t waste any time reminding us what a supremely talented guitarist he is. His take on “Twenty-four Hour Blues”, originally recorded by Bobby “Blue” Bland, is full of those OMG moments that blues-guitar fans live for. Bonamassa’s early mentor, Danny Gatton, was reputedly obsessed with dialing in the perfect tone, and JB was obviously an attentive acolyte. The sustain and clarity he achieves on the treble strings is extraordinary, and there’s a shimmer of echo at the end of his ascending licks that’ll send shivers down your spine. JB covered Bland’s “I Don’t Believe” back in 2006 on his You & Me album, so this latest tribute is further evidence of his abiding regard for one of his most important influences. The Bobby Bland song flows seamlessly into the second track, a cover of Bobby Parker’s “It’s Hard But It’s Fair” from 1968. Parker has been compared to Bobby Bland and Bland’s guitarist Wayne Bennett; they’re blues artists who have one foot in the soul/R&B genre, and that, again, is a territory that Bonamassa’s exploring in this latest set. JB covered Parker’s “Steal Your Heart Away” on his Black Rock album (2010), and it’s interesting to compare the two(https://www.rockandbluesmuse.com/2023/10/03/review-joe-bonamassa-blues-deluxe-vol-2/).
