Jimi Hendrix is tied to the blues because of how much he drew from it. He often covered classic blues songs live and wrote his own modern blues classics, like “Red House” and “Hear My Train A Comin’.” But for Hendrix, the blues was just one possible departure point. He pretty much integrated everything he heard into his music. Hence, the Bob Dylan cover (“All Along the Watchtower”) and the snippet of Pachelbel’s Canon in “Bold as Love.” For Hendrix, the blues was an important ingredient in his sound, but hardly the only one. Which is what makes singer/guitarist Stef Paglia’s solo debut, Never Forget, so interesting. Paglia borrows a lot from the Hendrix sound, rather than digging back to the original blues source material. Belgian Paglia comes from The BluesBones, a five-piece band, and here, working solo, he’s in a power trio format, just like Hendrix. However, in addition to Hendrix, there’s also a strong Red Hot Chili Peppers sound, which makes sense since that band also took a lot from him. Together, it gives Never Forget a funky vibe that dips a toe into blues, but for the most part stays true to more of a funk-rock sound. In fact, the track “Take Me Away” sounds a lot like “Funky Monks” from the Chili Peppers’ 1991 smash hit album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Paglia has a smoother voice than Anthony Kiedis, although he does have similar moments of rapping/singing, but on a much more melodic level. Paglia also doesn’t shy away from his Hendrix love, covering “Freedom.” Paglia’s cover doesn’t detour too far from Hendrix’s, but has more shape and structure than any of the Hendrix versions, which tended to be more freeflowing, to the point of feeling like liquid. The album’s best moments are when Paglia gets away from the funk-rock and moves into more straight-ahead blues rock. “Crush On You” is one of the album’s strongest cuts, with a cool slide riff that gives the tune a decidedly Black Keys groove. Paglia’s vocals are also a little more raw, which gives the song lots of swagger. “The Unknown” is a bouncy blues, a la Stevie Ray Vaughan, with Paglia’s voice once again in top form, although it also features one of the album’s best guitar solos. And “Warmth Instead of Cold” is a rock ballad with a beautiful blues solo. The album’s best three songs are the final three. I’m not sure if that’s a coincidence, a reflection of the songwriting order, or Paglia’s sense of song quality. But he is at his best when he’s working in rock and blues. While his Hendrix, funk-inspired work is fine, it’s ground that’s been well-tread by too many. It also might also be nice to hear Paglia’s band (drummer Joel Purkess and bassist Geert Schurmans) cut loose a little more. Part of what made Hendrix so compelling was the interplay between him and his rhythm section. Hopefully Paglia will pick up more of the straight-up rock and roll thread on his next album.

Loyd Vandergriff, better known as "The Human" of The Human Project, (not to be confused with the UK's Human Project) has hand-picked some of his best songs from 2005 to now and put them all on his new release, "Essential Human Project." 15 killer Human Project Tracks. Rockin!
What started out as a hobby with the release of his 2006 CD “The Real Stuff,” has slowly turned into more serious business for Loyd (The Human) Vandergriff. His infectious beats and witty lyrics have slowly begun to catch on with fans all over the world. This is in spite of the fact that he has no label, no professional management or PR firm backing him. He writes all the songs, produces all his CD’s and markets them all himself. His download sales on all music sites like Spotify and ITunes have slowly increased over time as more and more people discover his music; So much so that after a 3 year hiatus, he decided to release a CD of all new material, “Humanized," in 2017. It contains 9 new Human Project tracks, and The Human is in vintage form. Loyd was born in Georgia, and even though he left the south at age 13 and moved to California, his musical roots were established there. From Buddy Holly to Elvis to hot rockabilly, he started feeling those beats and they got down into his soul. He comes from a rather musical family as well, with some good fiddle, mandolin and guitar players. He got a good dose of these genes. He played in high school rock bands all 4 years in the late 60’s. From CCR to The Rascals to Steppenwolf, Wilson Pickett,The Beatles Stones, and more, all of this comes out in his music today in one way or another. In his 20’s, he got the nickname “The Human.” This came from his love of music, extensive vinyl collection and willingness to share it with the cold beer flowing. After over a 30 year period where he hardly played at all, he was given a Stratocaster by his partner and friend from Greenwood, Mississippi in 2005. It didn’t take long for the feeling to play to came back. He purchased a Boss BR 1600 recorder and starting messing around writing some songs. These tracks showed great promise, so he went into the studio in 2006 and recorded “The Real Stuff.” Songs like Jimmy’s Juke Joint, Standing in the Shadows and Red Vette Roll got people’s attention world-wide. In 2008 he recorded Human Project II, Humanized. This was followed up by several more over time, and his fan base continued to build. So now we have “Humanized.” A collection of songs in the finest Human Project tradition. From the grooving Fast Train, to the rockin Bar Room Meltdown and Take it All, to the slow smoldering Highway 58, fans will not be disappointed with this release.

Stony Plain Records announces a March 24, 2023, release date for Ridin’, the new album from two-time Grammy nominee and Blues/Roots music legend Eric Bibb. The label released the album’s first single, “Family,” on December 8.  Eric Bibb has already scheduled lengthy tours of Europe and Australia in the first quarter of 2023 to support the new album’s release. The follow-up to his multiple award-winning, critically-acclaimed 2021 album, Dear America, Ridin’ is a continuation of the vision that informs Bibb’s artistry as a modern-day Blues troubadour. Grounded in the folk and blues tradition with contemporary sensibilities, Bibb’s music continues to reflect his thoughts on current world events and his own lived experiences, whilst remaining entertaining, uplifting, inspirational and relevant.
“As a songwriter, studying African American history has always been a deep well of inspiration. The true stories of my ancestors and their communities are at the heart of many of the songs on my new album – Ridin’. Together with co-writer/producer Glen Scott, we’ve created a concept album focusing on the ongoing task of understanding systemic racism and purging it from our world. For all its seriousness, Ridin’ is a funky, groovy, hopeful collection of songs that feature stellar guest appearances by Taj Mahal, Jontavious Willis, Russell Malone and Habib Koité. At a time when popular political movements are attempting to delete truth from the historical record, I feel called upon to sing songs that contribute to greater understanding and much-needed unity. The making of Ridin’ has been a labor of love. We hope you’ll enjoy the journey.” – Eric Bibb
The ethos for Ridin’ was hugely inspired by the oil painting by Eastman Johnson, “A Ride for Liberty (1862),” that depicts an African American family fleeing enslavement in the southern USA during the American Civil War. In Eric’s own words: “Johnson’s painting embodies all the hope, determination and courage that is at the core of the African American experience and needed now throughout the world.”  Ridin’ was produced by Glen Scott and features Habib Koité, Taj Mahal, Steve Jordan, Tommy Sims, Harrison Kennedy, Russell Malone and Jontavious Willis, as well as a host of brilliant session musicians and singers from around the globe. A two-time Grammy Award nominee with multiple Blues Foundation awards, Eric Bibb is known and revered globally for having carved his own musical destiny with honesty and power. Eric’s father, the late Leon Bibb, was an activist, actor, and folk singer who marched at Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King. Eric’s youth was spent immersed in the Greenwich Village folk scene. Names like Dylan, Baez, and Seeger were visitors to his home. He was deeply influenced by Odetta, Richie Havens, and Taj Mahal – who guests on Ridin’ – and he has synthesized all of that into his very own style.

Jason Freeman - Hex & Hell

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2023
Time: 35:17
Size: 80,9 MB
Label: Self Released
Styles: Rock/Blues Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Dirty Heart - 3:19
 2. Florida Watah - 3:38
 3. Help Me - 3:49
 4. Hex & Hell - 3:21
 5. Love Baby - 4:15
 6. Magic in My Home - 3:11
 7. Memphis Bridge - 3:37
 8. She (Do The) Rump - 2:34
 9. Teasin' me - 3:38
10. The Beginning of... - 3:51

Jason Freeman, who also is a member of Memphis pre-World War II blues cover band Bluff City Backsliders, plugs in for his first solo effort — a wild mélange of Texas boogie; Louisiana swamp; Mississippi Delta and hill-country blues; and Sun Studio-style rockabilly. And he’s no stranger to that last subgenre, either, working as a Sun Studio tour guide by day. “Working at Sun Studio has expanded my view of the role Memphis has played throughout history,” Freeman says in his bio on the website for “$5 Cover Amplified,” a package of 12 online documentaries produced as a complement to Craig Brewer’s 2009 musical drama series for MTV, “$5 Cover.” “I think that’s helped me raise the bar as to what I’m doing, knowing I’m representing a brand that’s known all over the world. In my own humble way, I’m a representative of that tradition.”
In fact, “Hex & Hell,” a collection of 10 Freeman originals, is the first release on filmmaker Brewer’s new record label. Freeman has a song featured in all of Brewer’s films — “The Poor & Hungry,” “Hustle & Flow,” “Black Snake Moan” and “Footloose” — and taught Samuel L. Jackson how to play slide guitar for “Black Snake Moan.”
If one had to draw a voice comparison, fellow slide guitarist Roy Rogers might come to mind. But it’s Freeman’s gutsy slide that’s in the spotlight here, presented in a variety of styles and tones, backed by just bass and drums on most tracks.

Ally Venable - Real Gone

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2023
Time: 42:24
Size: 97,6 MB
Label: Ruf Records
Styles: Blues/Blues Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Real Gone - 3:15
 2. Going Home - 3:30
 3. Justifyin' - 3:40
 4. Broken & Blue (feat. Joe Bonamassa) - 4:22
 5. Don't Lose Me - 3:37
 6. Any Fool Should Know - 3:19
 7. Texas Louisiana (feat. Buddy Guy) - 2:55
 8. Kick Your Ass - 3:24
 9. Blues is My Best Friend - 3:39
10. Gone So Long - 3:46
11. Hold My Ground - 3:47
12. Two Wrongs - 3:04

With so many blues songs & artists it’s hard to produce something that even hints at originality. While there are some songs on this 42-minute CD that are basic blues there’s lots of skating originality here that’s tasteful, well-executed & leaves behind a trail of sparks. Some young folks play guitars with smoking fretboards. Believe it. Wear some fireproof clothes for this music by the redoubtable Ally Venable.
“Real Gone,” opens well for its drive & basic blues catchiness but “Going Home,” tweaked my ears. The song smokes slowly like a barbecue grill – lots of flavorful notes fly from Ally’s guitar.
As usual, Ally turns in a first-rate performance. She’s not as raw vocally as Big Mama Thornton but Ally does possess that Bonnie Raitt polish with her Texas rock vocal & blues guitar attack. Something to admire. Her 5th solo CD is a mature outing with no sugar-coating. Recorded in Nashville, Ally’s razor-sharp slicing on her strings is like swiping a leather strap like a demon barber with a straight edge about to go to work on a thick beard.Ally knows what each song’s Fahrenheit should be. That may be her secret. She doesn’t just play it ordinary. With a variety of tones, Ally whips across her instrument & her little fills & solos sink into the gaps in the song like grout between tiles. No wild abandon for the sake of showboating.Produced excellently by Grammy winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy & Susan Tedeschi) Real Gone (Drops March 24–Ruf) features 12-blistering blue devil-tales that include a guitar guest spot by Joe Bonamassa (“Broken & Blue”) & legendary guitarist/vocalist Buddy Guy (“Texas, Louisiana”). Ally sounds like she’s mastered the Bonnie Raitt vocal attitude & with endorsements from Buddy & Joe who needs a review.
Ally at 23 has absorbed so much mud thick old-school blues influences that she appears to be perpetually high on the beauty of performing the blues. She never wallows in going through the motions. “Don’t Lose Me,” has that infectious intoxication swaying through blasts of horns as she runs down her lines. This is as muscular as Tracy Nelson, Maria Muldaur, or Karen Lawrence.
In the more blues-ballad “Any Fool Should Know,” it goes down like smooth Balvenie single malt. The daring “Kick Your Ass,” shows a gutsier Ally. She is excellent with her high-register vocal & she means it. One of the year’s best for sure.
Players – Tom Hambridge (drums/percussion/bgv), Kenny Greenberg (guitars), Tom Macdonald (bass), Moke Rojas (keys), Max Abrams (saxes), Steve Patrick (trumpet) Rachel & Sarah Hambridge (bgv).
Highlights – “Real Gone,” “Going Home,” “Broken & Blue,” “Don’t Lose Me,” “Any Fool Should Know,” “Kick Your Ass,” “Texas, Louisiana,” “Gone So Long,” & the juke-joint oriented “Blues Is My Best Friend.”

The return to a seminal sound, with clear nods to the Blues pioneers.
Vargas, at the peak of his creativity, continues to surprise us with twenty new songs that can be described in the way that Carlos Santana once said: "his music is like a rainbow and in this new work he shows it, he will not go unnoticed...", after After receiving eight platinum records for his long career, he returns with his band to the road.

Together with his bandmates Dave Alves (bass) and Karl Schantz (drums). And that album is filled with unpolished blues, stripped of any superfluous frills. What remains is rocking, funky blues with a high fuzz content.
You will immediately get to know their sound in All Over Again. A brooding boogie that pumps along fuzzingly. Weezil's vocals are just as gritty as his guitar playing. The funky sultry Children Of Night also sounds equally unpolished. Saxophonist Dan Giacobassi performs in the fuzzing funky blues Easier To Steal.Walked Away From Me creeps along filthy with Weezil's viciously scraping guitar. In On My Porch you're invited to a party in Weezil's yard via a nice funky blues rocker and since you're there anyway you'd better try Weezil's Whiskey as this is a very nasty slow boogie. After the soggy shuffle Take It Away, Weezil continues with the pumping He'll Be Gone in which influences such as Rory Gallagher and Jimi Hendrix can be found. Dave Alves' very funky bass opens the nicely groovy Desert Drive-In. Slowed Down is remotely reminiscent of Free's All Right Now, but as a powerful dirty version of this sound. The Diddley beat of Enough Is Enough closes the album. A wonderfully dirty blues album!

The nine-piece horn band, Rhythm Krewe, from southern California, evoke those glorious West Coast blues records from a decade ago, many appearing on the long defunct Delta Groove label. This band, originally called Floyd & The Flyboys, predate those recordings, having begun in 1990. Like so many musicians in the L.A. area the members play in a variety of settings, be it film, television, session work, or major productions. They congregate here under a new banner, Rhythm Krewe, to deliver an intoxicating mix of blues, swing, jump blues, and soul. The main driver behind Floyd & The Flyboys, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Steve Zelman, is still steering the ship, and contributes nine originals to these dozen. They open West Coast style with Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “She Moves Me” with the full band in tow, horns ablaze with tenorist Chris Mostert and pianist Jim Blazer stepping forward with solos to accompany Zelman’s vocal and tasty guitar licks. Vocalist Gary Coppola takes the mic, for “One Hell for Another,” the classic woe-is-me blues tale that has the protagonist making the choice between two evils. Steve Z returns, adding a swampy southern vibe with “Little Bit of Heaven” as the horns sit out, leaving a quartet to render the tune, the only time this occurs on the album. The full band and tinkling piano return for the shuffling “Better Late Than Never,” with Steve Z. skipping along blissfully, singing about his latest love. Slow 12-bar blues enters the program with Coppola in the lead for “Time of Day” – “I’ve given you everything a woman could ask for, but you won’t give me the time of day.” This one yields extended solos from a deliberate Blazer on the ivories and Zelman’s slow burning guitar. We head to the Chicago South Side for James Cotton’s “She’s Murder” with Blazer on barrelhouse piano, Zelman hitting the stinging notes, and horns accenting on the choruses. From there, true to their band name, the band nods to NOLA and specifically to Professor Longhair on “Her Mind Is Gone.” Chris Jennings is especially impressive, delivering the Crescent City sound on his baritone sax. A third vocalist, guest David Morgan leads on “Prescription for Disaster,”  a snappy shuffle about the common blues theme – a man done wrong by a wayward woman. The final third of the album are all Zelman originals beginning with the Latin infused “Wild Love,” one of the better horn charts, sharp work on the kit by Danny Pucillo Jr., and Blazer shifting to B3.  The title track is a jump blues, rich with blaring horns, Zelman’s fiery guitar, with Coppolla and Zelman singing as if fronting a big band. Mostert soars on the tenor and Zelman’s crisp, clean lines fit perfectly on this standout track. We get a bit of a breather with “Sweet Surrender” before they close out playfully with “Monkey Toes,” again bringing both Zelman and Coppolla to the mics for a mix of swing and that unmistakable Bo Diddley beat. Rhythm Krewe digs in, staying close to tradition, enraptured in the joy of playing this music. They break no new ground, bring rather predictable lyrics, but never lose their inherent feel for the music whether down and dirty or brightly danceable.

Taj Mahal can rightfully be called a living legend for his contributions to popular music. With a voice as instantly recognizable as Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, or Dr John, Taj Mahal has throughout his career pushed the envelope of American music forward by incorporating sounds from the Caribbean, Africa, traditional blues and jazz. He has won 3 Grammys from 15 nominations, was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame, and presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association. With ‘Savoy,’ Taj takes a new direction in his musical journey, exploring classics from the American songbook with his good friend and acclaimed record producer John Simon, whose resume includes producing classic albums by The Band, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Simon & Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot, Mama Cass Elliot, David Sanborn, and Michael Franks. Savoy is the realization of a musical collaboration they had been planning for decades, finally locking in the studio time to make it happen in August 2022.Recorded with the hottest musicians in San Francisco, Savoy is a loving throwback to the sounds of the swing jazz big band era, titled as a tribute to Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom where the music composed by the likes of Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, George Gershwin and Louis Armstrong was performed by a who’s who of iconic artists, and now brought back to life by the one and only Taj Mahal/

10. The Magic Of Slieve League - 4:03

With his brand new record Eamonn McCormack introduces the listener to a supercharged portrayal of the traveling blues rock artist’s life. Everything on Eamonn McCormack is interconnected: the places he’s seen, the people he’s met and jammed with, the miles he’s covered, and the experience he brought home to friends and family, time and time again. The result is an album that feels like a handful of rich, fertile soil, composed of the best this planet has to offer. You can’t expose yourself to it without getting dirty, depending on your own definition of dirt: The blues on Eamonn McCormack’s eighth album is certainly not clean. Neither is the rock, nor the indie folk that Eamonn throws at it. And how could it be, anyway – being found, carried and shaped far off the beaten track that too many norm-abiding, standardizing copycats have already paved and cleaned? This warm, road-dusty record isn’t meant to be seen as a blues tourist’s postcard but as the recollection of a traveler in many respects, a true explorer. Eamonn’s blues is known to be unapologetic about his shitting on conventions, and it doesn’t whine as often as blues seems to be expected to do, hell no! Instead, it snarls with gnashing teeth like Clint Eastwood, pointing thick-skinned fingers at shit that never disappoints in pissing the man off. Be it the corrupt gun biz from weapons of mass destruction to the guns in the hands of teens on the streets and child soldiers (Living Hell) or the insufferable fear of humanity wiping itself out with the push of a button (Angel of Love). In Letter to my Son he sits down to warn the boy from falling prey to the temptation of greed, disrespect and hatred. Instead, he encourages his son to make mistakes but learn from them, paving any potential ripples caused with an imprest of generosity and unconditional love. The starkly contrasting story of Geronimo deals with the plight of the Apache native American tribes, illustrating why not enough such letters could be addressed to kids by their passionate parents. At the other end of the spectrum, the joy of living life to the fullest takes the stage in the dance floor stomper Rock’n’Roll Boogie Shoes, while a funky chunk of self-irony grants a glimpse at Eamonn’s humorous side and his smartphone addiction with Social Media Blues. Eamonn and his young rhythm department have been called a modern-day power trio numerous times, and songs like these – along with an ecstatic stage presence – could very well be the reason why this is true for the millions of people who visited their explosive shows, uniting hard rocking bikers, blues fans and folk fanatics all under one roof. And despite all the fame he’s earned breaking the blues charts: Eamonn McCormack will never consider himself too good for kneeling down in awe to salute people that he can’t help but admire unconditionally for their life’s work. His Hats off to Lemmy and Lady Lindy, an ode to the great aviator and pioneer Amelia Earhart, are just two of the raw shoutouts he loves to do as tokens of respect or gratitude.

Dublin, lreland? And the first thing you might think of is Guinness! U2, Glen Hansard, Hozier or Phil Lynott. Maybe its something in the water over there, because music seems to be embedded into lrish peoples DNA? and lnternational Blues-rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Eamonn McCormack is no exception. This latest lrish Star emerging to the top and well known in some countries is about to release his seventh album this April across Europe and the UK. ‘Storyteller’ is the title, packed with eleven original tracks, the core of which was recorded live in the studio to capture the true essence of Eamonn along with his young energetic band. You can feel it! The band were still hot and on fire after an ecstatic live performance on WDR Rockpalast just days before. Producer Arne Wiegand knows what energy in music is all about and from the get go! That was the goal and exactly what they achieved, in capturing “Hairs on the back of your neck vibe” from the slow emotional songs to the Íast rocking tracks that will make you want to drive your car at high speed. lt offers just the right blend of thoughtÍul ballads and funny lyrics into the whole mix. It’s a roller-coaster ride of emotions as Eamonn takes you through his stories and a glimpse deep into his inner soul and it grips you in all the right places. You know before the end of the first song, this is no guitar player, now on the lnternational radar, having recently just come from the university of Youtube lessons! This is as real as it gets, performed from someone who has lived it! Even the dogs on the street know you don’t start mastering the true art and craft of songwriting, singing and guitar playing at the level of ‘Storyteller’ without paying your dues and Eamonn certainly has paid them. He did start playing at 6 years of age and by twelve he had already decided he would dedicate his life to being a musician and becoming the best he could till lights out! Many musical influences creep into ‘Storyteller’ and listeners hear how unique and diverse he really is, which separates him from most and the one interesting personal achievement, is the fact, that Eamonn actually got to play, tour and record with most of his childhood idols including everyone from Rory Gallagher to ZZ Top and Johnny Winter to Walter Trout and more.As a live performer he is as exciting as it gets. No gimmicks, just pure energy and emotion. A true road warrior who performs mostly original songs but when he does play a cover he puts his very own stamp on it, and he’s a festival favorite that has got to rock some of the biggest and best-known festivals in the World. This lrish man is destined for Blues Rock Royalty soon.

10. Monkey - 3:41

Will was born in Narbonne in a family of regional printers and writers. He found balance in football and music. With the influence and support of his father, he learnt how to play the guitar.
At age 17, he created his first band that covered Californian punk style bands, followed by a second band more inclined towards Metal. Through the following years, he wanted more purity in his music so that he started to give concert alone on stage. Then, the Weissenborn guitar, also played by Ben Harper, put a spell on him. He got original instruments custom made for him, thus mixing both his passions for music and wood. With his Old School style inspired by Led Zeppelin, BB King and the Mowtown movement, he wants to go across the continents playing and sharing his music with the whole world.
He took part in The Voice-Sixth edition which was a real challenge for him. Together with his particular musical style inspired by country music and blues, he wanted to confront with the opinion of professionals and he wished to convince the coaches with his cover version of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall “. He joined Zazie’s team. He will participate in The Voice All Star 4 years later where he will return to Zazie’s team. His peaceful and shy presence on stage, certainly are.
He's unusual because he surrounds himself with sounds we have forgotten. He reminds us of Pink Floyd, Creedence, Lynyrd or even the Rolling Stones and the most obscure bluesmen like the guitar player folks of Greenwich. Will, that's the guy who always turns his eyes full of kindness towards his audience, when those eyes open or leave his guitar. Authentic and available, Will Barber released his first album "Alone" in late 2018. This album allowed him to play with great artists, and to export his music abroad. Going through the Power Trio stage for several years, Will released his second album entitled "13" in March 2023, which is the 1st album integrating new musicians, allowing him to continue developing the vision of his universe “New Roots”.

oots rock with lyrics that tend to be smarter than you might expect from this genre. Heck, he mentions Faulkner, Jesus, and Buddha, going so far as to even title a song for "Georgia O'Keeffe." But it's the way Terrell plays with words and twists phrases that makes his music compelling, as long as you don't mind the occasional profanity that is part and parcel to the dark themes of which he often writes, including portraits of drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. Jim Doyle, Rich Meyer, and J. Swanson form the band, which brings a certain backstreet energy and gritty sound refined during a long stint of touring in support of Angry Southern Gentleman. On one of those tours, Terrell opened for Joan Osborne who, in turn, contributes vocals to the title track, which is the quietest and one of the finest moments of the offering. Overall, the second half of the record hits a nice stride somewhere around "Black and White Blues," and is an easier set to listen to than the first handful of tunes.

Those that follow the blues scene know that the field is crowed with musicians who are long on talent but short on originality and inspiration. This is particularly true of regional artists who can keep the dance floor filled all night with cover tunes but clear the room when they try to add one of their own tunes to the mix. Likewise their discs seldom rise above the "nice try" category due to the inclusion of well-worn chestnuts and recycled riffs. On this, his third disc, Larry "Weezil Malone" Fitz once again separates himself from the pack by focusing entirely on a diverse collection of quality original material. Backed by nimble keyboard work and a steady groove laid down on bass and drums,Fitz explores roots rock that would fit comfortably on a Sun Records collection, "Two In The Morning", straight Delta Blues that find their way into Chicago, "I Wish That You Would Love Me",  chugging Texas guitar blues on the instrumental number, "For Freddie", 70's style blues rock ballads, "Addiction", Memphis soul blues, "Nothing But Despair", rock and roll, "Wild and Free", and even a Grateful Dead style mid- tempo rocker, "One Hundred More Miles". Lyrically, Fitz takes on everything from mates who talk waaaaay too much,  "Yappin' Like That",  to making it through a jail stint by thinking of the beauty awaiting his release on "30 Days". While this disc recently won the WYCE Jammie Award for best local blues disc it is broader than that and should appeal to not only blues fans but to those who enjoy a rollicking rock number or two in their diet. ...Mark Smith, GR Press

Johnnie Marshall - Live For Today

Bitrate: 320K/s

 9. Love To Play Them Blues - 3:45
10. Crazy 'bout My Woman - 3:34
11. Sweetest Thing I Know - 5:32

Marshall's debut album is like the baseball legend about the back-woods farmboy who goes straight from the farm to pitch in the World Series. Marshall was just a local Florida phenom when he was discovered by Johnny Rawls, who produced this album. Rawls puts together a solid band with a punchy horn section to frame things nicely behind Marshall, but it's young Marshall who's the real star here. Showing off a style that has more than one flavor to it, Marshall negotiates the T-Bone Walker-styled blues of "4 O'Clock in the Morning," the funk-rock blues of "Live for Today" and the soulful strut of "Dave's C.C. Groove" (a salute to his old stomping grounds) with ease and flair, his playing always economical and to the point. Rawls' voice, unfortunately, isn't quite the limber piece of equipment his guitar work is, but it's not embarrassing either, eschewing vocal gymnastics for a more understated approach. As debuts go, this is more impressive than most.

“Harlan Flo is a dose of down and dirty blues with a classic rock feel, a modern rock edge and some of the hottest vocal harmonies going.”
“Harlan Flo mixes their blues bass with a strong melodic sense, great harmonies and some wicked guitar play. Wheels Of Time is definitely worth a listen or three, but you may not be able to stop there.”
“the vocal trio of Amanda Riva, Sophia Hall and Jenna Liddle provide some of the hottest vocal support east of the Mississippi.”
"Two things stand out most. The first is the guitars, which don’t have that aged blues sound, but instead kick out a modern upbeat blues rhythm mixed with some polished funk. And keeping with blues tradition, the guitar solos have plenty of character and voice. "
"The second is the lead vocals, which are delivered steady and soulful, and have an easy laidback appeal like a comfortably worn leather recliner. Adding more substance to the vocal tracks are the sensual and sexy backing vocals. This is a quality sound for a band’s"

Produced by Contemporary Blues Legend Joe Bonamassa, Blood Brothers is a statement of artistic collaboration and friendship. Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia are true "Blood Brothers" in life and in the music they create both individually and collectively, joining forces in a collaborative effort of songwriting and performances to create a total listening experience greater than the sum of its parts. Gulf Coast Records announces a March 17 release date for one of the most-anticipated albums of the year, the upcoming Blood Brothers disc featuring multi-Blues Music Award-winners Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia. The duo concluded a highly-successful string of “Blood Brothers” shows in the spring/summer of 2022 with new tour dates already announced beginning in February and running through the summer, culminating with a special appearance at the Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas in September. Blood Brothers was produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith and recorded at Dockside Studio in Maurice, Louisiana. “Sweet Mama,” the album’s first single/video, drops February 10th. "This album was a blast to make and I am even more excited to take this music out on the road and perform for the people,” says Mike Zito. “It's just a bit more complex with an overall band dynamic that I think sets apart from what Albert and I normally do." “The making of this album was a ‘brotherhood’ in every sense of the word,” adds Albert Castiglia. “The production team of Josh Smith and Joe Bonamassa, along with Mike and I created something incredibly special. I hope our fans enjoy this collaboration as much as we did.” Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia are true “Blood Brothers” in life and in the music they create both individually and collectively, joining forces in a collaborative effort of songwriting and performances to create a total listening experience greater than the sum of its parts.  Added to that process are the talents of producers Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, who brought fresh ideas to the recording sessions, pushing Mike and Albert creatively and musically to present their best work to date. “Mike and Albert have a special chemistry together when they plug in and play that few have. They finish each other's sentences musically,” award-winning guitarist Joe Bonamassa said about the sessions. “Great tunes, great people, great hang! What's not to like? It was an honor to be involved in this project." For the Blood Brothers album, Mike Zito: vocals/guitars; Albert Castiglia: vocals/guitars – brought together their two powerhouse bands, featuring Matt Johnson: drums; Ephraim Lowell: drums; Doug Byrkit: bass; Lewis Stephens: piano/organ.  Josh Smith provided his additional talents on guitar to the sound, and Joe Bonamassa stepped up to be featured on the new song, “A Thousand Heartaches.”
"Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia have done something special,” added co-producer Josh Smith. “They have both found their musical confidante. Most solo artists never even look - let alone find - theirs. They have brought together a real ‘band’ using members of each's solo acts. The sum of all these parts added with a tremendous effort to both write and perform the strongest record of their respective careers has paid off in a special album. Blood Brothers indeed! Joe and I are proud that these brothers trusted our partnership to produce this special album!"
Of the many insights into the songs on Blood Brothers, Mike Zito offered these two about “‘In My Soul’ and “One Step Ahead of the Blues”: “In the summer of 2022, my wife Laura was diagnosed with cancer. It was a surreal shock. Albert suggested I write songs about how I felt, but I said no. I just couldn't bring myself to that place yet. ‘In My Soul’ is the only song that came out of what I was feeling at that time. I didn't think about it or analyze it, I just started singing.
“For ‘One Step Ahead of the Blues’: I am a JJ Cale fanatic. I love his voice and his style. Although JJ did not write this song, his recording has always been on my playlist. It just fits this band and album with Albert. It turned into a great duet that makes for a strong bond.”
Albert Castiglia ventured inspirations for “A Thousand Heartaches” and “Tooth and Nail”:   “In March of 2022, while on tour in Delaware with The Blood Brothers, Mike asked me to write a ballad for the new album, because we were well-stocked with up tempo numbers and needed to change the pace a little. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to write an unrequited love song like ‘Bell Bottom Blues’ by Derek & The Dominos or ‘We’ve Got Tonight’ by Bob Seger. I’ve been through unreciprocated and forbidden love in my life, but never had the songwriting chops to express how I felt in the midst of it. Most of my songs of love gone bad or love never meant to be usually had me coming off as bitter. I wanted to change that, dig into my past and write something that had me taking the high road and coming off a little more dignified.  I think my songwriting has come a long way and ‘A Thousand Heartaches’ is a result of that progression.
“And when Tinsley Ellis writes a song for you, you listen! Tinsley came to our Blood Brothers show in Atlanta last summer and told us he had a few songs that he had written for us. ‘Tooth and Nail’ grabbed my attention right away. It has all the elements that appeal to a blues-rock guy who grew up in Florida. To me, it’s the ultimate southern rock, Florida/Georgia blues tune. It’s signature Tinsley. It was an honor to sing and play on this one.”

Bruce Anthony Conte (March 3, 1950 – August 8, 2021) was an American R&B and jazz fusion guitarist, known primarily for his work with the band Tower of Power, of which he was a member from 1972 to 1979. He performed on seven albums, and rejoined the band for live work briefly in 2006-2007.
Bruce Conte was born in Sanger, and grew up in Fresno, California USA. Conte and his cousin Victor Conte began playing in a 'family' rhythm and blues band as junior high school students in the early 1960s. Throughout high school they performed in the rhythm sections of several local bands, including Common Ground, playing the local club scene in 1967–69. In 1969 Conte moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and joined The Loading Zone, who shared rehearsal halls with, and regularly opened shows for, Tower of Power. Conte became close to Tower of Power's founder and leader, Emilio Castillo, and to Stephen Kupka—the primary songwriters for the group—and began co-writing songs with them and occasionally sitting in with the band.  In 1972, Tower of Power began recording their eponymously titled third album, but at the beginning of the sessions, Castillo decided to change a number of band members and Conte and fellow Loading Zone member Lenny Pickett were invited to join, along with lead vocalist Lenny Williams.Conte remained with Tower Of Power until 1979, performing on the albums Tower of Power, Back To Oakland, Urban Renewal, In The Slot, Ain't Nothin' Stoppin' Us Now, We Came To Play, and the live album Live And In Living Color. Conte also contributed backing vocals, as well as a number of songs to these albums both as sole and co-writer.In an interview with Robb Lawrence, Conte cited as his primary influences Albert King, Grant Green, George Benson and Jimmy Nolen (primarily his work with James Brown). Conte's lead playing is mostly in an expanded blues style often using blues, pentatonic and Dorian mode scales. After leaving Tower of Power in 1979, Conte played in a number of groups in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, as well as with Al McKay in his All-Stars, and released four solo albums. One of these is Bullet Proof on Severn Records (2002).In 2006 Conte rejoined Tower of Power, touring with the band for 14 months, before moving to Cebu in the Philippines.Back in Los Angeles in 2012, Conte, an insulin-dependent diabetic, announced that a routine blood test in July of that year had revealed that he had leukemia. An appeal to raise funds for his medical treatment was established via the Jeremy Wilson Foundation.
Equipment Conte's guitar throughout nearly his entire period with Tower of Power was a 1957 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop. Conte performed primarily using the neck pick-up and played the guitar so much that he wore through the pickup cover. Conte sold the guitar in 2006.During the Tower of Power years, Conte played through a 1967 Fender Super Reverb in the studio, using a Fender Quad Reverb or sometimes Twin Reverb for live work. He also used Vox wah wah and MXR Phase 90 effects pedals. More recently Conte has played a Baker guitar through a Rivera amplifier.
Death. Conte died on August 8, 2021, after being diagnosed with leukemia.

Robin Rogers - Treat Me Right

Although she might be a new face on the national blues scene with this debut for the high-profile Blind Pig label, Robin Rogers is a familiar name to dedicated blues fans. She has gigged steadily in the Southeast since 1990 and has released two previous indie discs, both with her husband/guitarist Tony Rogers. In other words, she's a veteran performer, just without the catalog to prove it. Perhaps that's why she sounds so comfortable on this set dominated by originals. Her husky voice falls between Maria Muldaur's sexy croon and Susan Tedechi's controlled rasp as she commands attention without oversinging or upstaging the songs. The material is a sharp mix of gospel-infused jazzy blues-rocking with an occasional torchy aside. Lyrically, she touches on serious subjects of substance abuse ("Drunkard's Alley") and '60s racial discrimination (the riveting "Color-Blind Angel," which already won second place in the blues category of the 2007 International Songwriters Competition despite not being officially released until this 2008 album), along with more typical lost-love laments. Horns and Rogers' own harmonica perk up the arrangements, which veer slightly to the slicker side. The combination of excellent material and Rogers' compelling voice is what makes this a winner. She sings the lyrics to the midtempo "Dark Love" like she has lived them and infuses every track with genuine passion that never devolves into self-pity. The religious overtones of "Promised Land" tussle with Rogers' sassy delivery in a yin and yang that create tension and relief between the lyrics and the horn-driven verses. She slinks around the chorus of the noir jazz blues "Nobody Stays" like a panther on the prowl as Tony Rogers' guitar lays down subtle licks that provide the smoky, stale beer, last-call atmosphere. Although she's clearly a fan of female blues legends exemplified by her terrific take on Big Maybelle's "Don't Leave Poor Me" and a piano-driven "Ain't No Use," Rogers applies their intensity to a slightly more updated style that pays respects to the past without wallowing in it.
