William Shatner (born March 22, 1931) is a Canadian actor, writer, performer of the spoken word, and director, best known for having gained fame for his starring role as Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise in the television show Star Trek: The Original Series from 1966 to 1969 (continuing into seven of the subsequent movies). Shatner has written three books chronicling his experiences playing James T. Kirk and being a part of the Star Trek franchise. He's also recorded several albums, many of them drawing on sci-fi themes such as his covers of "Space Oddity" and "Rocket Man". He has since worked as a writer, producer, director, musician, writer, and celebrity pitchman (most notably for Priceline.com). He has worked with Ben Folds a great deal, both on Folds' Fear of Pop project, and more recently on Shatner's album Has Been (which also featured Joe Jackson on his cover version of Pulp's "Common People"). Shatner's other collaborators include Peter Frampton, Bootsy Collins, and Steve Miller among many others (with that just being on one album). Upon reaching his seventies and beyond, Shatner still shows no signs of slowing down. His acting career reached a new peak when he won two Emmy Awards (in 2004 and 2005) for his portrayal of attorney Denny Crane in the television series The Practice and Boston Legal. In 2008, Shatner stared in his own talk show, entitled Shatner's Raw Nerve on Bio (the Biography Channel). It focused on the personal lives of celebrities stuff that is not normally discussed. The songs on William Shatner's new album, Bill, chronicle significant autobiographical moments in his life and the ideas, challenges, and questions he's confronted along the way. The resulting work blends long-form autobiographical poetry and prose, music, spoken word, performance art, and philosophical exploration. Toggling between passion and despair, reflection and yearning, this collection explores his life journey during a pivotal and chilling moment of history.

Taj Mahal, original name Henry Saint Clair Fredericks, (born May 17, 1942, New York, New York, U.S.), American singer, guitarist, and songwriter who was one of the pioneers of what came to be called world music. He combined acoustic blues and other African American music with Caribbean and West African music and other genres to create a distinctive sound. Taj Mahal (the name came to him in a dream) grew up in a musical family. His father, of Jamaican background, was a jazz musician and arranger; his mother, a schoolteacher, sang gospel music. While a student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the early 1960s, he began exploring the origins of African American music and focused on acoustic blues. Following graduation, he played in folk clubs until he moved to California in 1965. There he teamed up with Ry Cooder to form the band Rising Sons. Returning to solo performing, he released his first album, Taj Mahal, in 1968. This and other albums recorded during the next several years—notably Giant Step/De Ole Folks at Home (1969) and Recycling the Blues and Other Related Stuff (1972)—featured blues songs infused with ragtime, reggae, gospel, and other sounds. Mahal typically accompanied himself on a National steel guitar but was also accomplished on a number of other instruments; he would frequently include electric instruments, tubas, steel drums, and such exotic instruments as the kalimba (thumb piano) on his recordings, often in unexpected combinations. Mahal recorded several dozen albums over the course of his career; a major anthology, In Progress & In Motion (1965–1998), was released in 1998. He explored world music on Mumtaz Mahal (1995), recorded with Indian musicians; Sacred Island (1998), a delve into Hawaiian music; and Kulanjan (1999), on which he partnered with Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté. Mahal’s work also included scores for motion pictures—notably Sounder (1972) and Sounder II (1976), in which he also had acting roles—and for the play Mule Bone (1991), originally written by Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston in the 1930s. He received Grammy Awards for best contemporary blues album for Señor Blues (1997) and Shoutin’ in Key (2000), and his duet album with Keb’ Mo’, TajMo (2017), also earned that award.

Chicago Blues Hall-Of-Famers MAURICE JOHN VAUGHN, FREDDIE DIXON and JOHN WATKINS have not been idle these past months. When gigs dried up from the pandemic, the 3 veteran bluesmen put their heads and musicianship together to record a cd titled “3 by 3” on Vaughn’s Reecy Records label, released on July 2nd, 2021.
“We’d meet for a session in masks, the studio would be disinfected afterwards, and we’d kick it back in the following day” said Vaughn. “Painstaking at first, we managed to get in a groove in short order. I’m proud of it and it’s kept us in good spirits during this tough time.” Sessions took place in the Beecher, IL studio known as On The Moon utilizing the highly sensitized hearing and empathetic soul of blind proprietor/engineer Byron Harden. “Byron’s got a great ear,” says Dixon. “He can hear things no one else can and he communicates from a deep place.”
The three principal musicians have been friends since their days as Blues journeymen. Vaughn first crossed paths with Watkins during the latter’s Kingston Mines club period and later during John’s stints with James Cotton and his uncle Jimmy Johnson. Freddie met Maurice as bassist with A.C. Reed and Vaughn played guitar. Freddie and John were co-members of Willie Dixon’s touring band known as the Chicago Blues All Stars in the last decade of the elder Dixon’s life. Since then, they have often worked together under each other’s leadership in Chicago clubs, and festivals both in the US and Canada.
“This cd is both a collaboration and a way for each of us to fulfill separate purposes. And everyone’s got something to contribute that a solo project would not have had,” says Vaughn. “It’s a 21 song double cd, 7 cuts for each of us. We play on some of each other’s tracks and John and I brought some cuts together from various sessions with other friends from recent years.”
Dixon’s aim is to “pay tribute to the artistry of my dad, so my cuts are Willie Dixon songs” he says. “I’ve wanted to do this for some time and this was the perfect opportunity. In the future I’ll include originals of mine but this is a way to honor my father. We’re reaching out to young people with the blues. It’s time to mentor and to pass this music on to the next generation. Willie Dixon was all about that, that was his legacy. He felt Blues music was the most powerful thing on earth. And it is.”
John Watkins has been looking forward to recording again since he rejoined the re-formed All Stars (who have now gone their own way) in 2017. This rekindled a performing spark that he continued to pursue in his adopted town of Detroit. “This is like a new lease on life, man. Maurice and Freddie made the call and I was there. We all brought so much to this combination. It’s been a gathering of kindred spirits.” Maurice enthusiastically echoes his bandmate’s sentiments that creating this cd has been a successful joint effort: “I’ve enjoyed the independent production aspect and the teamwork of “3 by 3.” The sound and the end product are on me and my partners. And it’s brought us closer since we’re all positive and motivated to do this.”
The beauty of the 3-Star lineup is in the varying sensibilities of each. Vaughn’s “The Spy” has one foot in a Southern Blues style reminiscent of Bobby Rush, Dixon’s treatments of Willie Dixon’s tried-and-true Blues standards like “Little Red Rooster” are given new life with horn arrangements combined with a wry vocal delivery, and Watkins brings his gutbucket blues funk back up from the days of his classic original “Here I Am” to “Traveling Man” (written by Vaughn) and his own “Stealing Love is a Crime.”
Given the results under the duress of COVID 19, Vaughn, Dixon and Watkins might have created a new paradigm for an independent recording project that features three leads. With its equal numbers of songs per artist, shared sit-ins on many tracks, and a brilliant mix of originals and covers, “3 by 3” is both an economic and creatively brilliant venture of fantastic results. – Peter M. Dirty beats, hypnotising slide, screaming harmonica riffs and plenty of fuzz: all of these will be served by this four-men band from Liège-Limburg-Namur, Belgium. Boogie Beasts translate their passion for (hill country) blues into a most characteristic sound of their own, which has a touch of The Black Keys jamming with John Lee Hooker at a rave in the wee hours of the morning, or Morphine on a psychedelic trip with Little Walter, or even RL Burnside backed up by the young Rolling Stones at a juke joint-gig. The drive is infectious, the noise is pure filth, yet highly irresistible…

Most blues musicians can proudly recall their age and stage in life when they received their introduction to blues music. It is a coming of age in a sense – before the blues and after the blues. For Vancouver’s James ‘Buddy’ Rogers, life as he knew it was inherently different after discovering the blues. James ‘Buddy’ Rogers learned to love the blues close to home. His dad, Bud worked for the railroad and often brought home records and a guitar and by the time little Buddy was 10 he was lifting licks. By 11 he’d formed a band and started gigging. Within two years he was a regular at local blues clubs. At 15 his band Texas Storm was being booked by Canada’s top agency for opening concert slots. “My dad went to the liquor control board and got a license that he would take to bars so I could legally play there. I began playing shows sitting in with all the great blues guys around Vancouver back then. The ones that really stand out, who took me under their wing, so to speak were the late Muddy Fraser, Tom and Jack Lavin, Jim Byrnes, Wailin’ Al Walker and Russell Jackson. These guys always invited me out to play with them and open for them.” Rogers recalls. At the age of 19 Rogers teamed up with former B.B. King bassist Russell Jackson and began a tour that lasted five years. Based in Kansas City, they played an endless string of clubs, concerts and festivals sharing the bill with Canned Heat, Sam Taylor, The Holmes Brothers, Elvin Bishop, Kenny Neal, Katie Webster and countless others. In 2000 Buddy started his own band and played blues clubs across Canada and Europe. When he wasn’t working under his own name he appeared on US tours and recordings with many other blues acts.Rogers new CD 'By My Side' is an 11 song CD which includes ten originals by Rogers and one cover made famous by Freddie King ‘Goin’ Down’. Rogers is backed by long time band mates Mike Wedge on bass and James Badger on drums. Joining the CD on piano, B3 and wurly is Texas native Lewis Stephens who is known for his work with Freddie King, Delbert McClinton and Mike Zito. Lewis recently appeared on Gary Clark Jr’s CD ‘The Story of Sonny Boy Slim’. James ‘Buddy’ Rogers’ main influences on guitar – Johnny Watson, Jimmie Vaughan and the three Kings – plus years of being a blues road warrior have helped shape him into a well-seasoned blues guitarist. By My Side showcases a guitar and voice forged by a life in the blues. James ‘Buddy’ Rogers; his music is here to stay.

Colin Linden wears many hats. The award-winning guitar virtuoso has played on over 500 albums and produced 140. As a singer-songwriter, Linden celebrates his 45th year in the industry with his 14th studio album, bLOW.Released September 17, the album is the industry vet’s first project as part of his dear friend and longtime collaborator, Lucinda William’s Highway 20 Records. Hand-selected by Williams, bLOW is Linden’s first electric blues record. “Lucinda is one of the kindest, most accepting, funniest, freest spirits I’ve ever known,” Linden tells American Songwriter in an interview.  “She’s one of the greatest blues singers currently on this planet and one of the greatest country singers, and one of the greatest rock n’ roll singers.” He notes that the iconic artist “didn’t become a legend by virtue of hype or fashion.” The two first met nearly 30 years ago doing Austin City Limits, and immediately hit it off. Their kinship has continually blossomed over the decades up to this momentous mile marker. Linden adds, “To have her, and her husband/partner Tom Overby enthused and supportive of my music and of this record, is a giant honor. My wife Janice and I have spent so much time with Lu and Tom that they are really like family to us.” This new collection marks another first for Linden as his first album to be initially released on a US-based label. All the others have come out in his native Canada before being released in the U.S. Having lived in the U.S. for over 20 years now, Linden describes the shift as “huge.” n 2020 Linden landed his first Grammy for his producer role on Keb’ Mo’s Oklahoma. At this point in his career, the artist has garnered 25 Juno Award nominations, nine wins, and contributions to the Nashville TV show, O Brother, Where Art Thou, and Inside Llewyn Davis. “I feel more comfortable in my own skin with this record than ever before,” Linden shares. He chalks up the album—some of the hardest hitting, most dynamic music of his illustrious Blues career—to simply being a function of age and experience. Crafted in the home studio that his wife built for him three years ago, bLOW exhibits a dynamic blend of reverence for sacred Blues traditions of his predecessors while taking notes from the modern rock stylings of his pioneering successors. Reflecting on the creation process, Linden explains, “behind my mixing console, I have a blown-up photo of me and Howlin’ Wolf that my mom took the first day I met him—November 27, 1971.  I was pretty sure that when I was mixing a few of these songs, that the Wolf’s smile got bigger. So I felt I was on the right track.” As an artist with a platform, Linden emerges amidst an era of tension with impressive musical prowess and infectious blues-meets-rock styles—finally something to agree on.”I  felt a sense of freedom in making this record, and most of all I wanted to share that,” says Linden. “All of it is spiritual. All of it has the joy of playing guitar in it. All of it is grateful for the road I’ve been on for about 50 years—from when I first met Howlin’ Wolf and even before.”

Born and raised in California, Frasco’s first exposure to the music industry came not onstage, but rather in an office. As a young teenager, he worked with legendary indie label Drive-Thru Records and helped book bands like Hello Goodbye, and by the time he turned 18, he’d already moved to New York City for a gig with Atlantic Records. When the job fell through, though, Frasco made a leap of faith and decided to launch his own career as an artist, taking everything he’d learned working with other bands and applying it to himself.Initially, Frasco hired local pickup musicians off of Craigslist to back him for gigs, but soon he put together a steady(ish) lineup, and Andy Frasco & The U.N. began taking the world by storm. The group would release a series of acclaimed records, share bills with the likes of Leon Russell, Galactic, Gary Clark, Jr., The Revivalists, and Marcus King among others, and slay festival stages everywhere from Mountain Jam in the U.S. to Rock am Ring in Germany and COTAI Jazz & Blues in China (this summer, Frasco will perform at multiple summer festivals including Summer Camp, FloydFest and hopefully many more to be announced). NME hailed the constantly evolving group as “party-starting touring stalwarts,” while Relix praised their “raucous energy,” and Clash lauded their live show as a “nightly high-octane experience that doubles as a celebration of life and music…energized by a powerfully entertaining multi-cultural soundtrack that will shake the foundations of all nearby structures. ”Every party has to end sometime, though, and while it seemed Frasco was living out his rock and roll dreams on his 2019 and early 2020 tours, he was facing an internal darkness few knew about.“I hit a breaking point,” he explains. “I was sitting alone in my van, and I realized that I didn’t know who my friends were. Worse, I didn’t know who I was. I was drinking too much, I was addicted to cocaine, and I was dealing with really heavy depression. I even contemplated suicide, but I decided that if I’m fortunate enough to leave behind a legacy, I didn’t want to be remembered just as some good-time party guy. I wanted to show people that I’m more than the crowd-surfing, Jameson-drinking maniac they see onstage.”Frasco began writing poetry that eventually became songs. He wrote about despair and anxiety, about friendship and growth, about accountability and potential, transforming the poems into defiant rock and roll anthems. These songs became his most recent album ‘Keep On Keeping On’ released at the beginning of the pandemic in April of 2020.Like many, the pandemic hit Andy hard. He was once again feeling that ‘breaking point’ and he quickly transformed his high energy road show into a year long digital blitz of new music, a 33 episode variety show (Andy Frasco’s World Saving ShitShow) which garnered 20 millions views, a highly attended digital Dance Party and Andy further developed his already successful and compelling podcast (Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast).
His variety show and podcast included interviews and musical performances by many notable guests such as Tony Hawk, Kurt Vile, Nathaniel Rateliff, Kamasi Washington, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and more.Additionally, Frasco recently scored ‘The Great Depresh,’ an HBO documentary about Gary Gulman exploring the comic’s struggles with depression that was produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Mike Bonfiglio)For more info on Andy Frasco, visit www.andyfrasco.com

12. Would I Do That to You ? - 4:11
13. He Said, She Said - 5:32

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, B's Testimony, from Al Basile and it's a real cool mix of blues and jazz. Opening with Lucky Man, a lightly funky, New Orleans flavored track with loose drum rhythm by Mark Teixeira, Brad Hallen on bass and Bruce Bears on piano. Adding in a bit of rock to the blues on If All It Took Was Wishing, Basile on cornet works with Doug James and Doc Chanonhouse to get just the right sound. Funky blues, I'm Bad That Way features some real tasty guitar work from Kid Andersen under some of Basile's best vocals on the release as well as a real nice laid back cornet solo that flows perfectly. Horn backing by James and Chanonhouse give it just the right amount of soul. Andersen steps up early on Up Close And Personal Best with some real hot riffs and follows with some absolute stinging solo guitar lead and Basile's muted cornet soloing lays in the slot making this one of my favorites on the release. Shuffle, I Oughta Be Your Monkey, is a lot of fun with just Basile front and center on cornet and lead vocal and a cool interface between Andersen's fine guitar work and the horns of James and Chanonhouse. Very nice. Another tight guitar solo by Andersen highlights It's Your Pain. Kid blends chickin pickin styling with bluesy approach, Basile's own laid back cornet solo laid in and the rich organ work of Bears tying it all together.  On Through Thick and Thin Andersen really gets loose on guitar and if you've never heard that, it's an absolute joy. The guy really can play and he's really inventive. He swings from riff to riff with wreckless abandon and blows the top off of this one. Excellent! Built around a similar musical theme as "A Thrill Is Gone" Would I Do That To You?, is a great R&B shaped blues number. Basile leads on vocal with horn response by James and Chanonhouse. This track is a real sweet showcase of his cornet work and again resolves with Andersen just slaying the guitar. His bends, mixed with his (what sounds like) whammy vibrato is off the hook. Soft horn backing by James and Chanonhouse really add warmth for a strong finish. Wrapping the release is He Said, She Said, a low slung blues number with a real nice piano display by Bears and solid vocals by Basile leading to another hot guitar solo by Andersen. Basile closes the show with a poised cornet solo line. Really cool release.

12. Gimme Some Skin (feat. David Millsap) - 4:21

If you needed any encouragement to check out Rose-Colored Glasses Vol 1, the new album by celebrated blues singer, Teresa James and her band The Rhythm Tramps, released September 17th on Blue Heart Records, you could take note that James is riding the crest of the wave right now. After a dozen albums, Blues Music Award and Grammy nominations, James herself, over five decades has picked up more awards than can be mentioned here. More importantly, she’s rightfully earned her reputation as a singer’s singer. No less than Randy Newman chose James to perform a song in his honour, and she has worked Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis, Lee Roy Parnell, Neil Diamond, Walter Trout, and a host of other notables. Terry Wilson produces here, and take writing/co-writing credits, and James is backed by The Rhythm Tramps, a crack LA-based crew whose individual bios alone could make up an entire review. There are some very special guests present also, including the legendary Snuffy Walden, Lee Roy Parnell and Yates McKendree. The bottom line is that this a star-studded cast, led by one of the best blues singers around. As you’d expect, the quality is apparent from the first few seconds of opener, “Show Me How You Do It,” a sizzling, blues-soul number with a classic, smouldering sound. James’ voice is as enticing as ever, full of character and smooth as molasses. “Tell me how you feel, show me something that’s real,” she sings, over a slow-burning backdrop of heavy bass, muscular, ticking drums, rattling percussion and smoky guitar. “Takes One To Know One,” with its gorgeous, understated brass section, is another delight. The production here, as throughout the album, is wide, deep and warm, providing an ocean of embracing sound through which James’ voice is magical.“I Got A Love I Wanna Hold On To” ramps things back to a more basic, southern-blues sound, and is no less compelling. This is a track, and indeed an album, built on subtlety and nuance, be it ringing organ motifs, rising horns or guitar flourishes. Every part fuses together beautifully, including, of course, James’ peerless vocals. “The bottom line for me,” says the woman herself, “is that I just really love to sing more than anything in the world.” “Once The World Stops Ending” is a case in point, a wonderful 70s-feeling soul-blues workout, simmering with restraining might. James could sing any style and sound arresting, but here she is in her element, and this is a standout track. The deeply affecting “Everybody Everybody” almost matches it. A sparse, spectral arrangement which nevertheless shimmers and shines, there’s a slight hint of reggae here, a Caribbean flavour which adds an appealing twist. “Rise Together” takes us deep back into blues territory, propelled along by more of those luscious horns, organ chords and intoxicating drumming. “Gimme Some Skin” takes us out – an electrifying track that rocks and rolls good-naturedly with a positive and inspiring message. Rose-Colored Glasses Vol 1 by Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps is a record which takes its time, assured of its destination and its journey. Everything herein is lovingly put together by some fantastic musicians. “It’s my passion. It’s my therapy,” says James. Give this one a listen and the album will soon by your passion and your therapy, also./

 9. Because of You [Explicit] - 4:25
10. What Can I Do - 4:00

Mike Andersen opens up his 9th album with a bang: a self biographical song, ‘Slamming The Door’. A humorous piece about being aware of what kind of person you want to become, both in music and in life before you actually end up slamming a door you should have left open. “I’ve been writing sad songs so long, and then it struck me: The only way to survive emotionally in these turbulent times is to embrace the chaos we’ve been thrown into and accept the fact that, Yes, we all get messed up sometimes but that’s ok. We can face this together”
It was out of this, that the title song ‘Raise your Hand’ was born. The sound of this song is different from the rest of the album, -being more old school with upright bass and horns, different from we’ve been accustomed to hearing from Mike and the band. The rest of the album moves effortlessly through the myriad of genres we know from earlier Mike Andersen Band albums: A personal mix of the blues and soul music Mike fell in love with at an early age, but without the tyranny of “genre dogma”. Mike and the band demonstrates increasing inspiration from from today’s music. With these 10 new original songs, Mike Andersen (at the ripe age of 44) takes us through the life stories of a man who has made it halfway. From the tale of a guy who is so beaten by life’s hardships, that he fears he may not be able to get up again after another bout; to a song about those days when good energy streaming through our bodies, makes even the most hopeless dancer jump up on the dance floor and dance like he’s never done anything else. From the paradox of a coffee date at midnight; to magical moments when we break free from our worries and concerns; to the “murder ballad” of a man who fantasizes about emptying both barrels af a shotgun into the man his loved one betrayed him with. Mike Andersens characteristic voice, his intense guitar phrasing, and not the least, the fantastic band he’s had on the road for more than ten years, have created an album of natural practiced elegance. To capture this nearness and authenticity, the album was recorded ‘live in the studio’ on analog tape. Mike Andersen Band will be kicking down the doors of European venues in October, November, and December 2021.

Kris Wiley is the most powerful blues guitar playing female of all time. The only thing I have ever heard that compares to her live in concert is Jimi Hendrix and Albert King's "Live Wire". The cd "Kris Wiley " has great variety with outstanding vocals and guitar. There isn't one lously track. Originally from Redondo Beach, California Kris Wiley quickly made a name for herself in the 90s in the South Bay and then in the rest of Southern California and across the U.S. and in Europe. She released two albums, “Old, New, Borrowed And Blue” and “Breaking The Rules” played in New York, Chicago, Nashville, Memphis and then disappeared. And now here we are, “Kris Wiley” - produced by Carla Olson who has also produced albums by Jake Andrews, Barry Goldberg, Paul Jones, Chubby Tavares, Phil Upchurch, Joe Louis Walker, as well as individual tracks by Sugar Blue, Rocky Burnette, Alvin Youngbloo.

It’s the same kind of experiences. They’re wanting to do the same thing. They’re going there, they want to forget their troubles, have a good time.” That’s a guarantee anytime Rusty Ends hits the stage.

On Friday, September 17, Alligator Records will release Tommy Castro Presents A Bluesman Came To Town, the trailblazing new album from internationally beloved blues rocker Tommy Castro. Throughout his long, constantly evolving career, guitarist, singer and songwriter Castro has always remained true to himself while exploring, growing and creating new music, and he has taken his thousands of devoted fans right along with him. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery, stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll, each of his 16 albums is solidly built upon Castro’s unshakable musical foundation—a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitar-fueled blues, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by-the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work. Washington Post says “Soul-baring, roadhouse-meets-church, Memphis guitar licks.., gritty voice, Southern colors and rootsy textures.” Tommy Castro Presents A Bluesman Came To Town is a roots music odyssey. This special project was composed by Castro along with Grammy Award-winning producer Tom Hambridge. Through its 13 songs, The album tells the tale of a young man, working on his family farm, who gets bitten by the blues bug. He masters the guitar and heads out on the road seeking fame and fortune, only to find what he’s left behind is the treasure he’s been looking for. Each memorable song—from the blistering title track to the pleading Child Don’t Go to the hopeful I Caught A Break to the emotional Blues Prisoner—stands on its own, as well as contributing to the larger story. “I like to keep things fresh and interesting,” says Castro, “Tom and I have talked about making a record together for a long time. Collaborating with him was even better than I imagined. I had an outline for the story and then Tom and I talked it out and the songs just started to organically grow out of each other.” Castro continues, “A Bluesman Came To Town isn’t a story about me. It’s pulled from some of my friends’ and my experiences, though. I’ve seen first-hand for a lot of years what it’s like out there on the road.” The road has always been Castro’s home away from home. He’ll instantly ignite a crowd, turn them into loyal fans and then keep those fans coming back for more. He has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles and performed thousands of gigs, leading his bands at clubs, concert halls, and festivals all over the world. Famed guitarist Joe Bonamassa says, “Tommy has always been top of the heap among blues guitar players. He always puts on a great show.” Born in San Jose, California in 1955, Tommy Castro first picked up a guitar at age 10. He fell under the spell of Elvin Bishop, Taj Mahal, Mike Bloomfield and other blues artists of the day. Almost every major rock and soul act, from Ike and Tina Turner to Janis Joplin to the J. Geils Band to Tower Of Power, toured through the area, and Castro was at every show. He saw John Lee Hooker, Albert King, and Buddy Guy and Junior Wells at the same local blues bar, JJ’s, where he often jammed, dreaming of one day busting out. Mixing the blues and rock and roll he loved and the soul music he heard blasting from lowriders in his neighborhood Tommy started to create his own personal sound and style. He honed his guitar skills and intense, gritty vocals, learning how to capture an audience as he performed on San Francisco’s highly competitive club scene. As his reputation spread, Tommy played in a variety of Bay Area bands, soon making a name for himself as a hotter-than-hot live artist bursting at the seams with talent. In 1985, he was recruited to become lead singer and guitarist for the regionally popular blues band NiteCry, gigging regularly throughout Northern California. Castro joined Warner Brothers’ artists The Dynatones in the late 1980s, performing all over the country. He formed the first Tommy Castro Band in 1992 and has not stopped touring since. In 1995, soon after releasing his first album on Blind Pig Records, The Tommy Castro Band was selected as the house band for three seasons on NBC Television’s Comedy Showcase (airing right after Saturday Night Live). The show brought him in front of millions of viewers every week and cemented his reputation as a not-to-be-missed, nationally touring live performer. After a series of successful releases on the Blind Pig, Telarc and 33rd Street labels, Tommy Castro joined Alligator Records in 2009. His label debut, Hard Believer, was released to massive popular and critical acclaim. With the album, Castro won four of his six career Blues Music Awards, including the coveted B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year Award (the very highest award a blues performer can receive). In 2012, Castro stripped his music down to its raw essence, creating a high-energy, larger-than-life sound with the formation of The Painkillers. Tommy Castro & The Painkillers’ initial release, The Devil You Know, was embraced by his legion of fans and discovered by hordes of new ones. With the current version of The Painkillers (bassist Randy McDonald, drummer Bowen Brown and keyboardist Michael Emerson), Castro released Method To My Madness in 2015, Stompin’ Ground in 2017, and Killin’ It–Live in 2019, with critics shouting praise and admirers cheering the group’s every move. The band has coalesced into one of the telepathically tightest units Castro has ever assembled, making them one of the most in-demand live roots music acts performing today, delivering one soul-shaking, muscular performance after another. Upon the release of A Bluesman Came To Town, Castro will hit the road with The Painkillers, performing fan favorites as well as songs from the new album. “I’ve made seven albums for Alligator,” Castro says, “and I’ve never made the same record twice. I will always try to be my most authentic self. I give it all I’ve got every time we hit the stage!”

 5. Chase The Girl - 5:58

“EVERYTHING I WANT” is the 5 track mini album/EP by Ben Poole produced by ex-Ozzy Osbourne/Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) guitarist Bernie Torme.  “Introducing another great young British Rock Blues guitarist, this debut EP showcases the impressive talent of this young man. Ben combines powerful licks associated with Rock with a deft and gentler touch bringing the blues to the music. Ben Poole brings an energy and enthusiasm to all five tracks on this EP that is definitely on the rocky side of blues; Ben controls this raw energy to ensure that each track has its own shape, producing a controlled sound that excites. The four tracks that he has composed are a combination of strong lyrics and eclectic mix of guitar licks borrowed from blues, pop and at times a twist of country with the underlying discipline of the blues harking back to the delta. Ben has an inner confidence derived from understanding his instrument of choice this enables him to produce a modern sound that is his own and he can only go from strength to strength. This is a young man to look out for as he is no doubt a rising talent and should be supported when he comes to a local venue.”  ~ BLUES MATTERS’ MAGAZINE
