12. Interview With Sugar Blue - 19:25

Over his lengthy career going back to a stint with the Rolling Stones, it's hard to believe this is only Sugar Blue's sixth recording. It's a very good one, though, and if anything is worth waiting for, his first-rate, virtuoso harmonica playing always satisfies the true blues connoisseur in the attack and fluid lines he doles out. He's never received enough credit as a singer, with a clean, soulful, near crooner's delivery that appeals to young and old, male and female. This set of originals does at times stray into pop music, but that has always been Blue's style. His themes are more diverse than most love/not love lyrics, from everyman's blues to holiday or protest songs, tributes to heroes, and even a classic interpretation or two. He wrote or co-wrote most all of the tunes, save Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller's "Trouble" (in a Chicago-style blues funk) and the stern "Don't Call Me," adding "don't text me" to the lyric of this slow pop tune. At his best, Blue is wailing on his harp during the long and loose "Ramblin'," where he layers his instrument through overdubbing, does a great "Messin' with the Kid" in a mean, funky context, and plays "Cotton Time" in a smoother vein for blues legend James Cotton. The New Orleans shuffle "Noel News" in reference to Christmas Eve, "Nightmare" in a lonely man/bad woman scenario, and the cool "Average Guy" add good contrast, the latter tune talking about how normal dudes understand the blues too. Sound of birds and guns introduce "Stop the War," an unexpected song of dissent that stands out not only for its sentiment different than the other tracks talking about "murder in the first degree," but the rock & roll and funk beat that Blue adopts. Guitarist Rico McFarland is in on this, and he's excellent throughout, while second guitarist Motoaki Makino, keyboardist Damiano Della Torre, and drummer James Knowles keep the music cool and even-keeled, never boiling over. The last track is a rather poorly recorded interview segment where the leader talks about the other instruments he has tried out before, as he says "the harmonica chose me." Sugar Blue has never been fully or properly hailed as the complete, talented, soulful blues man he is, but this recording further punctuates his validity and uniqueness -- you know it's him from the first five seconds. You will also know you'll like this recorded effort just as quickly.

The Dusters are a Nashville-based blues rock trio, formed in 1986 by three college friends, Ken McMahan (guitar and vocals), David Barnette (bass) and Leo Overtoom (drums). The band released three albums on Reptile Records in the US and three on Dixiefrog Records in Europe. The band was part of the Miller Genuine Draft band network and recorded a national radio spot for MGD's "Tap into The Cold" campaign during the late 1980s and toured internationally until the early 1990s. Their first release, in 1988, Red and Hot and Ready to Roll, featured the original band. In a review of the three-song EP, the Austin American-Statesman called the music "'60s blues-rock revisited, with a big, raunchy beat, fat chords and growling vocals."[2] That same year, Nashville Scene voted the Dusters "best Nashville band".[3] For the second release, 1990's This Ain't No Jukebox... We're a Rock n' Roll Band, Leo Overtoom was replaced mid-session by Chris Sherlock. The band played at the South by Southwest festival. In a review of one of their performances, critic Michael Point wrote, "[T]he band's basic tool is its unrelenting boogie beat. Songs like 'This Ain't No Jukebox' and 'The Truck Won't Start' work on the reduced boogie level, but their appeal to any but the most devoted Southern-rock fans is limited." The final Reptile Records release, Unlisted Number, in 1997, featured Jeff Perkins on drums and Bobbie Keys on saxophone.
In 2002, a reunited Dusters with Jeff Perkins recorded with Dan Baird (The Georgia Satellites) and released Dang! on DixieFrog Records. Since that release the band has been working on their next project, recording with artists such as Pinetop Perkins (Muddy Waters), J.M. Van Eaton (Jerry Lee Lewis), Mike Scaccia (Ministry), Al Jourgensen (Ministry) and Nick Kane (The Mavericks)

Stoney Curtis Band - Acid Blues Experience

13. World Without You - 9:15

The name Stoney Curtis came from the cartoon character of the same name on the Flintstones. The early version of the band played mostly blues covers in the San Fernando Valley and West LA. For a while they had a singer with a big voice but soon cut it back to a "power trio" with Curtis doing the singing. After a couple of demo tapes, made in the garage sort of thing, the band finished its first studio CD. The Stoney Curtis Band are an acid blues and/or acid jazz three-piece band whom are upcoming artists. The Stoney Curtis Band from Shrapnel Records prepared to release the debut album from the veteran blues artist on July 19 2005. The album title is "Acid Blues Experience", which is a blend of classic blues rock and psychedelic blues rock. The Stoney Curtis Band have been working in Los Angeles and Las Vegas clubs for years making their own brand of psychedelic blues rock, readying their show for the road ahead. Heavily driven in 60’s/70’s psychedelia, the Stoney Curtis Band have been said to have translated the energy of their phenomenal live show into the grooves of "Acid Blues Experience". Sometimes, promising debut albums are followed by disappointing second albums -- a problem that is known in the music world as the "sophomore slump" or "sophomore curse." But other times, artists who show promise on a debut album take it to the next level creatively on their second album, which is exactly what Stoney Curtis accomplishes on Raw and Real. In 2005, the Los Angeles-based blues-rocker (originally from Chicago) showed a lot of promise on his first album, Acid Blues Experience. But his excellent follow-up, Raw and Real (2007), is an even stronger album from Curtis, whose long list of influences ranges from Jimi Hendrix, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, and Robin Trower to electric Chicago blues icons such as Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf, and Muddy Waters -- and there are even traces of David Lee Roth in some of Curtis' vocals, which isn't really surprising when you consider that Van Halen had blues influences and included an arrangement of John Brim's "Ice Cream Man" on their first album.

‘This strange time had me thinking and putting everything into perspective. And I said to myself, enough of the superfluous, if this is my last album, I don’t want anything unecessary in it; the idea is, ‘Straight to the Point!’ And that’s where the name for the album came from.’ If something well thought out attains perfect form, there’s no doubt that this album is just that, marvelously expressing the quintessence of Fred Chapellier’s music. Composed, played and recorded through the largely difficult and uncertain times of Covid, ‘Straight to the Point’ is a pure diamond, racy and devilishly impressive, tainted with classical blues, Soul steeped in R&B, and all held together with a sublime brass section; you can’t get more authentic! And if comparisons must be made, there’s no doubt the name of Robert Cray often comes to mind bringing that anglo-saxon touch. It could be worse! Straight To The Point Is A Perfect Condensed Of Fred Chapellier's Musical Art/ His Mastery Of The Roots Genre Is Beeautiful, Whether We're Talking About Classical Blues Or Soul That A Lot Of American Musicians Would Approve Of. Everything Is Carried By His Warm And Addictive Unique Voice. Without A Doubt His Most Beautiful Achievement To This Day !

Award-winning South African blues rock guitarist Dan Patlansky will release his new studio album Shelter of Bones via Virgin Music Label and Artist Services on 25th February 2022.
Shelter of Bones was recorded over a three-year period from 2019-2021. “The pandemic allowed me to take my time, and really think about how I want the songs to come across,” reflects Patlansky. “In many ways I tried to keep the sound from past albums that I’ve become known for in my arrangements and song writing, but definitely took some different turns along the way. I’ve always seen a record as a time capsule of where an artist is in a particular time of their lives.” For Patlansky, Shelter of Bones covers a three- year period of many ups and downs, and, as a result, the South African guitarist believes the process has been a very interesting journey. “My goal is always to try make a record that I would want to listen to,” says Patlansky. “I’m very happy and proud of this album. I produced it myself because I wanted a very particular sound. On three of the tracks, I enlisted a good friend and ex-keyboard player from Hamburg, Tom Gatza, who brought a fresh feel to these songs, especially the ballads (I’ll Keep Trying and Shelter of Bones).” “Shelter of Bones is an accurate representation of who I am currently as an artist, which is a modern twist on what I love most, the Blues.”  Source: Blues Magazine - https://www.bluesmagazine.nl/dan-patlansky-shelter-of-bones/

Picking up on the decadent image and rowdy approach of vintage blues acts, guitarist Big Daddy G (known to his mother as Dave Glover) began making a splash around the turn of the century. The club circuit had shaped his music into a fiery attack before any records had been released, and a chance meeting with organist/singer Tortoise Blue gave Big Daddy G the chance to form a strong band around his playing. In 1998, 4 Blues became the first recorded effort from the duo. A tribute to a deceased bandmate as well as a rough first effort, the uneven album led to the far superior Topless in 2000. Nominated for a Juno Award that year, the roaring album became a hit with blues audiences and the accolades began pouring in. A strong live act as well, Big Daddy G began scoring spots at several Canadian blues festivals while putting together their first live album. Entitled Blue Sound, the record captured their energetic stage show accurately and gave Big Daddy G the chance to explore his own songs a little more (https://www.allmusic.com/artist/big-daddy-g-mn0001933367/biography).

12. Rip It Up - 3:42

Although it's comprised entirely of previously unissued studio material predominantly recorded in 1980 and 1981 that didn't make the first cut on his Rounder albums, there's nothing second-rate about this compilation. The big man with the droopy eyes from Sun records sounds equally inspired on upbeat bluesy rearrangements of tracks rescued from the vault, such as Jimmy Reed's "Bright Lights, Big City," the roof-raising Little Richard cover "Long Tall Sally," and the album closing "Rip It Up." Sure, these chestnuts have been recorded thousands of times, but LaBeef tears into them with enthusiasm and passion, adding fresh nuances and a creative approach. Even Hank Williams' "Fool About You," where Buddy Spicher's fiddle injects a backwoods feel, is augmented by LaBeef's meaty twang guitar and gutsy vocals. His rearranged "Mannish Boy" maintains the classic song's energy but runs it through a swampy rhythm, transforming it into a chugging locomotive. Like Sun's stable of artists, in particular one Elvis Presley, LaBeef sees little difference between rockabilly, country, and blues. It's in the way he incorporates and combines those genres through that deep baritone and skittering guitar that makes him unique. Not just for fans, Rockabilly Blues is as good an introduction to Sleepy LaBeef's charms as any of his other albums. A bit more rockin' and bluesy than most of his stuff, only the album's abbreviated 37-minute length is disappointing about this rollicking, infectious disc. Roots rock & roll at its finest (https://www.allmusic.com/album/rockabilly-blues-mw0000112373).

Chicago Blues veteran Bob Stroger joins forces with Brazil's The Headcutters for his first Delmark full length "That's My Name", out February 18.
Bob Stroger, Chicago's most prolific blues batsman has worked with a cavalcade of legends, from Otis Rush to Jimmy Rogers, Sunnyland Slim, Louisiana Red, Snooky Pryor and many others, earning Blues Music Awards in 2011 and 2013. He has performed on over 30 Delmark albums, and at the age of 92, he has joined forces with Brazil's The Headcutters for his first solo Delmark album, "That's My Name" which will be released on February 18. "That's My Name" is receiving huge interest on blues radio - it's week it is #1 on Airplay Direct.  Stroger was born on a Missouri farm, and his family arrived in Chicago when he was 16, settling into an apartment behind Silvio's nightclub. A self-taught guitarist, he formed a family band (The Red Tops) before joining Eddie King's band. In the late 70s he began touring with Otis Rush, ultimately playing on his "Live in Europe" and "Lost in the Blues". His work as a session musician brought him together with Sunnyland Slim, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Carey Bell and Pinetop Perkins. For twenty-two years The Headcutters have been building their own blues scene in and around the sunny beach town of Itajaí in the state of Santa Catarina. They looked and sounded quite incongruous in their suits, with their vintage amps and guitars, singing traditional Chicago blues in English, but they persevered, sparked by their deep passion for the genre. Along the way they have toured in Argentina, all across Brazil and the US. They have backed great blues artists such as Billy Branch, Kim Wilson, Mud Morganfield, Eddie C Campbell. Just don't call Joe Marhofer and Ricardo Maca of The Headcutters bluesmen. In Joe's words, "we are just four white guys from Brazil, and we could never call ourselves a bluesman -- that belongs to the African American greats."  "That's My Name" was produced by Stroger and the Headcutters in Brazil in 2019 and 2020. It's 13 tracks include 5 originals by Stroger and versions of some of his favorite songs by Big Big Broonzy, Ma Rainey, Eddie Taylor, Jay McShann and others.

Regina Bonelli - Truth Hurts

 6. Mr  Big Man - 3:48
 7. Didn't I - 4:20
 8. Killing Floor. Wav (Radio Edit) - 4:03
 9. I Got to Go - 3:23

The first time you hear Regina Bonelli’s “Don’t You Put Your Hands On Me,” Regina’s furious blues anthem for feminist, for people, everywhere, there was no waiting, no analyzing, nothing but a visceral pleasure and a powerful anger. It made Regina an instant star in the blues world; a teaching lesson as well as a punishment for a sex that deserves punishment. The self-penned “Don’t You Put Your Hands On Me” is off her sophomore album Love Letter, which is still in the blues charts four years later. Regina’s third album, Truth Hurts, drops tomorrow. A nine song march into electric guitar blues, funk and soul glittering prize, it re-introduces you to a singer and a songwriter considered by some (by me) to be the best female blues singer since Etta James. The truth here for Regina is not pain, it is the truth of music and the birthing effect of an album of nine songs, three covers including the fabulous take on The Allman Brothers “Not My Cross To Bear” with an on fire Michael “Kidd Funkadelic” Hampton handling Duane Allman’s solo breaks. You might think this will prove to be the best moment on Truth Hurts but it isn’t. Truth Is that the album is one new standard after the other, the Howling Wolf cover of “Killing Floor”, an artist very well known by True Groove Records (Tomas Doncker released an entire album of Wolf songs), is among the best I’ve heard, “Mama Raised a Sweet Thing”, written by Regina, was great on her debut album but it is better here, a strong self-portrait and a pride that is at the heart of everything Bonelli does (the line goes “Mama raised a sweet thing but she didn’t raise a fool”) and the r&b ballad beauty “Baby Don’t Hurt Me”. Truth Hurts yes, though it doesn’t hurt to claim that Regina’s album is bound to be one of the best, if not the best of 2022. A just about flawless achievement/

It’s very easy to write off reality show music competition contestants/survivors because their paths don’t mirror those of past artists. The reality genre, for Americans, pretty much began with Kelly Clarkson almost 20 years ago, and the music competition output since then has been inconsistent talent-wise. But given the overall state of the music industry, where artists fight to be paid fractions of pennies to be streamed, going on a TV show to gain exposure, record sales, and sell show tickets seems a lot less crass, and perhaps even wise. But maybe I’m just making excuses for Nicholas David‘s Yesterday’s Gone, with David a finalist from the third season of The Voice TV show. His appearance on that program doesn’t take away from his musical talent or the quality of the album. I enjoyed his piano-driven blues, soul, and pop well before reading about his not-so-secret reality show past. And given that Yesterday’s Gone is produced by Samantha Fish, and that he’s also signed to the blues singer/guitarist’s imprint, Wild Heart Records, he’s obviously more than just a musical competition oddity. The Voice, as I understand it, is a show built upon a high-concept furniture set-up. Coaches
take on protégés without seeing the performer. The coach uses a call button to signal interest in a contestant, sort of like Tinder, but without the swiping, and the potential mentor’s chair whips around, allowing the coach to lay eyes on their potential trainee. At some point in the process a pairing is made (also like Tinder). One can see how David’s voice would get coaches’ easy chairs spinning like a demonic possession in a La-Z-Boy showroom. His vocals are sweet, soulful, sexy, but also very accessible and his talent is impressive without being threatening. The strongest tracks are the rhythm and blues tunes, which provide the perfect showcase for David’s voice. “Heavy Heart” feels like it’s from the 1960s and while a lot of the credit goes to David’s fantastic vocal performance, that’s somehow restrained and intense, his beautiful organ work also deserves a shout-out, helping to root the song in the past. Jonathan Long, himself a singer/songwriter/guitar-playing powerhouse, and also from Fish’s talent stable, lays down a perfect, spartan guitar line that hops along like a healthy EKG reading. “I’m Interested” is a slow jam that brings David into the 70s. His singing is pure sexual energy and as it inter-plays with his backing vocalists, you can’t help but feel like you’re overhearing the world’s greatest pick-up artist ply his trade. Long lays down some funky rhythm guitar, but also some trippy lead work. And David’s organ playing shines here, too, giving the track what can only be categorized as an old-school cool. It’s a seriously energized track, but also fun. Many of the other songs are more straight-forward piano-led pop. “Okay” has a low-key Jack Johnson energy. “Curious” has a Bruce Hornsby vibe. “Stars” is anthemic, probably the closest David comes to a straight-ahead rock track. David has an unbelievable voice and is a strong songwriter. But Fish did an incredible job producing this, pulling in loads of talented supporting artists that never overwhelm David, whom, it should be noted, seems like he would be tough to upstage. Guitarist Duane Betts also adds some engaging lead guitar to a few tracks, gilding the musical lily even more. The album’s funk and soul tracks are especially noteworthy, so while David seems of the blues/Southern rock world (although he’s a Minnesotan), it would be great to see him delve deeper into those classic rhythm and blues sounds on future releases.

Jimmy Thackery and The Drivers - Inside Tracks

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2008
Time: 61:54
Size: 143,2 MB
Label: Telarc Blues
Styles: Blues/Modern Electric Blues
Art: Front + Back

Tracks Listing:
 1. All Because Of you - 6:02
 2. Promised Land - 4:33
 3. That Dog Won't Hunt - 7:24
 4. Change The Rules - 6:47
 5. Landlocked - 6:13
 6. Just A Feeling - 5:58
 7. Eat It All - 6:18
 8. Blinking Of An Eye - 8:24
 9. What Part Of 'No' - 5:41
10. (You Got Me) Now What You Gonna Do - 4:28

After ten albums with his backup band, the Drivers, Jimmy Thackery seems to have tired of reading reviews that extol his solos while dismissing his songs as mere platforms for his guitar dexterity and suggesting that his weak voice isn't really needed. With 2007's Solid Ice, the tenth of those albums, he began to try to up the quality of his songwriting and expand his musical range, and that process continues with the 11th Drivers album, Inside Tracks. "Blinking of an Eye," for example, is sung in the voice of a man whose wife has died suddenly, leading him to reflect on how quickly things can change. "Change the Rules" and "Just a Feeling" express the songwriter's social conscience, and "What Part of 'No'" is his attack on the kind of pop stars he sees on TV. In such songs, Thackery tends to put his guitar solos off until the end, after he's had his say in his lyrics. There are a couple of instrumentals, and he uses them to explore other musical styles. "Landlocked" is reminiscent of Duane Eddy, although the twangy guitar sound gives way to more lyrical playing in the manner of Mark Knopfler. And "(You Got Me) Now What You Gonna Do" is a country shuffle that might have been lifted from a Chet Atkins album. Thackery certainly has made lots of records full of hot guitar playing, and this one certainly isn't bereft of guitar. But fans should note that it is an attempt by the artist to stretch himself creatively, making it a more diverse and tentative effort than usual.

Born St. Louis, Mo, Marquise hails from a musical family deeply rooted in the Blues. He learned how to play guitar from his grandmother Lillie. He also played with his uncle Clifford, who was a major influence in Marquise’s life. For Marquise, Blues is his heritage and way of life. He spent his early teenage years in St. Louis mentoring under the late great Blues legend, N.E.A. (National Endowment of the Arts) Heritage Fellowship recipient and Grammy Award winner Henry James Townsend. Marquise’s talents have earned him performing rights with some of America’s most notable blues performers such as blues legends B.B. King, Pinetop Perkins and David “Honeyboy” Edwards (the latter two also N.E.A. Heritage Fellows). He has also performed at dozens of festivals, and has toured all throughout Europe. During a visit to Clarksdale, Mississippi, Marquise was introduced to Sam Lay. Like other statesmen of the Blues, Sam took an immediate liking to Marquise and took it upon himself to help give Marquise’s career a boost by insisting that Chad Kassem bring Marquise to the celebrated Blues series “Bluesmasters at the Crossroads,” which has showcased a virtual who’s-who of the Blues at Blue Heaven Studios in Salina, Kansas. Marquise was an immediate crowd favorite, and was adopted by all of the elders of the Blues in attendance that year. His obvious talent along with his deep knowledge of the Blues and vast respect for his elders made it clear Marquise had something special, and Kassem signed him to a three album deal.Knox’s debut album MANCHILD was nominated for a Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut. The album was recorded when he was 16 with world reknowned guitarist Michael Burks and his band. The release received worldwide acclaim, including Living Blues’ Best Debut Artist Award and a Blues Music Award nomination for Best Debut Artist. Marquise then recorded a direct-to-disc album while in town for the next year’s Crossroads. Marquise released his second album, Here I Am, once again recorded at the legendary Blue Heaven Studios in Salina, Kansas. It features Marquise and his band, with a little help from Wayne Sharp of Michael Burk’s band sitting in on B-3 and piano. Nine originals, and three reverent covers of Marquise’s favorite Muddy Waters tunes.

In 1974, Buffett called Taylor to ask him to join the first official Coral Reefer Band. Taylor continued to play in the band until 2000.Taylor's nickname, "Fingers", was given to him in 1969 by John "Johnny Rock" Buffaloe (so nicknamed by Taylor) during their time in The Buttermilk Blues Band in Jackson, Mississippi. At the time, Taylor played keyboards for the band, hence the nickname "Fingers." Taylor began playing harmonica during his time in the band. Jimmy Thackery with the Cate Brothers - In The Natural State

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2006
Time: 51:08
Size: 119,1 MB
Label: Rykodisc
Styles: Blues/Blues Rock
Art: Full

Tracks Listing:
 1. Out Of Mississippi - 4:30
 2. Arky Shuffle - 5:37
 3. I Got A Rich Man's Woman - 4:36
 4. Levee Prayer - 7:38
 5. Ain't That A Lot Of Love - 4:38
 6. I'll Come Running Back To You - 5:40
 7. Hoodoo Man Blues - 4:47
 8. Snatch It Back And Hold It - 4:20
 9. Howlin' For My Darling - 5:51
10. Tell Me Goodbye - 3:26

Jimmy Thackery has been delivering his own brand of blue-collar hard-edged blues-tinged rock for some 40 years now, led by his sharp, emotive guitar style, and while nobody would accuse him of being a singer's singer, his quavering vocal approach is surprisingly effective in an everyman kind of way. In the Natural State pairs Thackery with the Cate Brothers (Ernie and Earl) for an Arkansas affair that features mostly blues-inflected tunes with touches of country, R&B, and even doo wop tossed into the mix. There are several covers here, including a fine, rolling take on Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' for My Darling," but it is worth noting that the strongest songs are Thackery originals like the lead track, "Out of Mississippi"; a hushed, atmospheric ode to New Orleans, "Levee Prayer"; and the doo wop old-time rock & roll feel of the set's closer, "Tell Me Goodbye." In the Natural State comes complete with a lengthy blurb from Mike Huckabee, the current governor of Arkansas, and if the album isn't quite the masterpiece he claims it to be, it is still a strong outing, with enough subtle variety from track to track to keep it from bogging down into being simply another contemporary blues record.

Big Al and the Heavyweights - Nothin' But Good Lovin'

 3. Crawfishin' on Me - 3:15
 4. Bad for the Blues - 3:59

11. Uptown Woman - 4:37
12. Big Boudin - 3:56

When you mix blues, Zydeco, rock and jazz in one big pot and bring it to a fierce boil, you get Big Al & the Heavyweights latest release, Nothin' But Good Lovin'. Produced by one of the blues' most noted producers and founder of Alligator Records Bruc. Bluziana Music.2004/ All you have to know about these guys is the fanatical following of "Gumbo Heads" that numbers in the thousands. They drive hundreds of miles to get a serving of Big Al and the Heavyweights musical gumbo. You see, Big Al and the Heavyweights is an unconventional original music band that hails from New Orleans, LA. Why Big Al himself is from The Big Easy. That is where he grew up, surrounded by the sounds of New Orleans music - Jazz, Blues, Zydeco, Cajun, Rock, and Swamp Pop. It is these influences that make Heavyweight music so accessible and fun. Big Al and the Heavyweights will be on the road 240+ days this year, and it is this regimen of hard touring for the last six years that has made them one of the most well known, original bands in any musical format. The membership of Big Al and the Heavyweights starts with Big Al himself. Born and raised in New Orleans, LA, Al is a real New Orleanian, going to MardiGras after Mardi Gras, seeing the sights of Mardi Gras through the eyes of a child. That same wonderment and jubilation comes through Heavyweight music - the music that helps people forget about the news du jour. None other than head Blues Brother, Dan Akroyd, has described Al as the "pounding, driving force" of Heavyweight music. Incidentally, Dan is a big supporter of the Heavyweights, playing all three of their CD's on his syndicated House of Blues Radio Show. They even play at the Chicago House of Blues for 2 to 3 nights in a row three times a year! But Dan Akroyd is not the only high profile celeb that knows the power of Big Al - Chef Emeril Lagasse tapped them to be musical guests for his season premier of Emeril Live! Lead vocalist/guitarist, Tim Wagoner, is to the Heavyweight sound as crawfish are to etouffees. His melodies and music fit his raw, consistently powerful vocals. His guitar solos start out warm and subtle and progress to pure explosive power. Wagoner hails from the Texas school of Blues where he lived in Dallas for years, honing his vocal, guitar, and songwriting skills by working with the likes of Karen Bella, and sharing the stage with Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Delbert McClinton. Bassist and vocalist, Dr. Dave Burns, a native of Waycross, Georgia and a member of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, has a unique style and expertise that comes from a career that has spanned more than 30 years. Living the Blues, working venues from roadhouses to concert halls, Dr. Dave has performed with a wide range of artists from Canned Heat, White Witch, and Storm, to Willie Nelson and Earl Thomas Conley. His strong grooves fit the Heavyweight sound like a hand in a glove. Often compared to War's Lee Oskar, George Heard, AKA Harmonica Red, began playing harmonica in his native Baton Rouge at the age of 15. He was a pivotal member of the late, legendary Clarence Edwards Band that garnered critical acclaim on several American and European tours with Albert King, Albert Collins, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Splitting time between the studio and stage, Harmonica Red has performed and recorded with Gatemouth Brown, Little Feat, The Radiators and Zachary Richard. This is what "Wavelength" had to say, "He's mastered every blow and draw, from slow and soulful wailing to lightening runs and jazzy chromatics."

Kingsnake, the second solo album from Russ Diapper and his band The Runaway Train is an interesting album with some variety; offering a small mix of blues and a lot of heavy rock, bordering on heavy metal tracks. The record is carried competently by Diapper’s growling voice that fits the fast paced fierceness of most songs and includes some very good guitar work. The first half of the record is somewhat musically unpredictable since it begins with a metal track, “Trust me,” a simple power chords hard rock song with big attitude. Seemingly setting the tone for the record, it then swings to a slowed down love song in “Look The Other Way.” “Bird In The Sky” follows and could probably pass off as a Megadeth track, which is then in turn followed by a twelve bar acoustic bluesy track, “Rock And Blues.” I was on the edge of my seat and wasn’t sure which direction the record would take next. Although “Rock and Blues” is musically solid with an impressive harmonica solo, it’s let down by unimaginative lyrics like rhyming “blues grass” with “ass” and “rap” with “crap.” “Wolf Moon” is the stand out song of the record, a gloomy, melancholic toned track with lyrics about a werewolf. The latter half of the record falls into hard rock territory with few surprises although two songs stand out from the bunch; “Roxy’s Dad,” driven by choppy guitar licks and an impressive solo, and “Doomsday” stands out with its sinister tone and hellish imagery.Despite the erratic changes musically in the first half of this album it’s on the right side of unpredictable in that it doesn’t become jarring at any point, this is mostly due to the aggressive style and the “I’m a badass” lyrics. It’s a solid record with a lot to like if you’re looking for an album that’s heavy rock laden with an in your face attitude.

How many Jamaican-born bluesmen recorded with John Lee Hooker and toured with Otis Redding? It's a safe bet there was only one: Eddie Kirkland, who engaged in some astonishing on-stage acrobatics over the decades (like standing on his head while playing guitar on TV's Don Kirshner's Rock Concert). But you would never find any ersatz reggae grooves cluttering Kirkland's work. He was brought up around Dothan, Alabama before heading north to Detroit in 1943. There he hooked up with Hooker five years later, recording with him for several labels as well as under his own name for RPM in 1952, King in 1953, and Fortune in 1959. Tru-Sound Records, a Prestige subsidiary, invited Kirkland to Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in 1961-1962 to wax his first album, It's the Blues Man! The polished R&B band of saxophonist King Curtis intersected with Kirkland's intense vocals, raucous guitar, and harmonica throughout the exciting set. Exiting the Motor City for Macon, Georgia in 1962, Kirkland signed on with Otis Redding as a sideman and show opener not long thereafter. Redding introduced Kirkland to Stax/Volt co-owner Jim Stewart, who flipped over Eddie's primal dance workout "The Hawg." It was issued on Volt in 1963, billed to Eddie Kirk. By the dawn of the '70s, Kirkland was recording for Pete Lowry's Trix label; he also waxed several CDs for Deluge in the '90s. Kirkland remained active into the 21st century, and was in Florida to perform at a show in the Gulf Coast community of Dunedin when he died from injuries sustained when the automobile he was driving collided with a Greyhound bus in Crystal River on February 27, 2011. Eddie Kirkland was 87 years old.

Billy Thompson, is one of San Diego's leading guitarists, and should not be confused with the U.K. jazz violinist Billy Thompson or the former Denver Broncos running back of the same name, Billy has been a mainstay of the San Diego music scene since the late 1970s. It was then that he co-founded The Fingers, a pioneering San Diego rock band that also included Paul Kamanski and Joey Harris. After The Fingers disbanded in the early 1980s, Billy went on to lead his own band, The Mighty Penguins, and to work with such blues greats as Little Milton and Larry "Arkansas" Davis. Billy's resume also includes work with country-music pioneer Tex Willliams, Bruce Willis and many more, including Gary Puckett. Thompson’s music bristles with the infectious, syncopated sounds of New Orleans, the electricity of great rock ‘n’ roll, the punchy verve of Memphis soul and the heartfelt power of blues, funk and jazz.  A sound reminiscent of the great Stax and Volt labels. Billy Thompson's great vocals and guitar are beautifully backed up the Memphis swing of The Penguins. A very good album.

He became good friends with the band’s guitarist, Warren Haynes, and they started a side project called the Unknown Blues Band, which played off and on for a few years. Next came Big Al and the Heavyweights, who quickly became a popular touring band. LOVE ONE ANOTHER, their seventh album since 1998, was recorded in Slidell, Louisiana, and produced by the band and George Curreau. Special guests include guitarist Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) and harmonica virtuoso Jason Ricci. Louise Hoffsten is here with her new album Crossing The Border/ It's brightening at the horizon! Sweet Louise is back with a new album. This is how Louise wrote when it felt darkest: "It has been an eventful time in the whole world. Impossible not to have been affected by it. Who can close their eyes when there is a crisis in the world? A pandemic that puts everything on hold. Evil forces everywhere in This is when you need music to draw strength from. This is when you long for Memphis. When you can not be out playing or traveling, you have to comfort yourself with the harmonica in a corner somewhere. It's just as well to accept what is now. If you dare cross the border ". But hey, now it's brightening on the horizon and this spring Louise Hoffsten is going out with the new songs on a Swedish tour. And one can already suspect that the interest will be extra large on the west coast. Today, Johan Lindqvist writes in GP: "Louise Hoffsten has been consistent with the fact that it is the music, the songs, the turn, the feeling that is important." and gives Crossing The Border a 4 out of 5 rating!

Royal Southern Brotherhood is an American blues and blues rock 'supergroup', that brought together singer and percussionist Cyril Neville (the youngest of the Neville Brothers), vocalist and guitarist Devon Allman (son of Greg Allman), vocalist and guitarist Mike Zito, drummer Yonrico Scott (longtime member of the Derek Trucks Band), and bassist Charlie Wooton. The band released their debut album on May 8, 2012.Before they even hit a chord, The Royal Southern Brotherhood grabbed attention. In the US South, where music is religion, two rock ‘n’ roll bloodlines tower above all others. In the saloon bars from Mississippi to Maryland, mere mention of the Allman and Neville Brothers casts a magic spell. Conversation falls silent. Pool balls stop rolling. Ten-gallon hats are tipped in respect and beer-bottles raised in salute. These aren’t just bands, they’re gods, and with a lineup comprising both the iconic Cyril Neville and Devon Allman, The Royal Southern Brotherhood come pre-loaded with expectations. Don’t worry: they can match them. The family tree might be auspicious, but this new band trades on talent, not genealogy. It’s not about rock history: it’s about the here-and-now. This lineup has talent to burn. You’ll already know Cyril Neville: poet, philosopher, percussion master and perhaps the South’s last great soul singer. Devon Allman: As the son of Gregg Allman, the 39-year-old has rock ‘n’ roll in his DNA, but he’s always walked his own path.Mike Zito: the blues ace whose ear for melody provides the counterpoint to his wingman’s rocking tendencies. Nominated in 2011 for the Blues Music Foundation’s ‘Best Blues Rock’ award, and winner of 2010′s Blues Music Award. Bassist Charlie Wooten and drummer Yonrico Scott: both heavyweight names in their own right, with Charlie’s bass chops celebrated on the Southern jam scene for his sets with the Woods Brothers, and Yonrico hitting the skins for luminaries including the Derek Trucks Band, Gregg Allman and the Allman Brothers themselves. They said that rock ‘n’ roll was dead, but they were wrong.

Known for blues-drenched jazz and jazz-drenched blues, Floyd McDaniel was a part of the Chicago scene for most of his 80 years. The singer/guitarist was born in Athens, Alabama but spent much of his life in the Windy City, where he'd moved to when he was 15, in 1930. As a teenager, McDaniel played and sang the blues on the streets of Chicago, and in 1933, he joined a washboard band called the Rhythm Rascals. In the early '40s, McDaniel learned to play the electric guitar and joined the Four Blazes, a jump blues combo that later became the Five Blazes and recorded for Aristocrat in 1947 and United Artists in 1952-1953. The Blazes went through their share of personnel changes; some of the artists McDaniel played with in the group included bassist Thomas Braden and pianist Ernie Harper. After the Blazes drifted apart in the late '50s, McDaniel was involved in a variety of activities, including operating a tavern on Chicago's South Side in the '50s and '60s and playing with a version of the Ink Spots in the '70s. In the '80s, McDaniel joined forces with Dave Clark, a veteran tenor saxophonist who ended up joining McDaniel's final group, the Blues Swingers. McDaniel, who recorded for Delmark in the 1990s, died in Chicago on July 23, 1995, only two days after his 80th birthday.
