At one time, good time boogie bands like this were as ubiquitous as Italians in South Philly. That’s definitely not the case anymore, so when a band like the APB puts something out, pay attention. The team of Willie Lockett/v-tp, Billy Gregory/g-voc, Paul Boudreaux/b-voc, Tony Di”allesandro/dr and guest Gregg Villafranco/key all hail from New Orleans, and have a gritty swagger that sounds like they were weaned on red beans and rice. You’ve got some party time shuffle  rhythms on “Going Back to New Orleans,” boogaloo boogie blues on “I’m Your Hambone” and “Killing Floor” a lonely hearts ballad on “From Memphis” and a load of frenetic fret work on the Fender during “V-8 Ford.” The band snaps like a fresh carrot, and the vocals would make Wilson Pickett proud.

Li'l Ronnie & The Grand Dukes - “Got It ‘Live’ From ‘05”

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2023
Time: 54:17
Size: 125, MB
Label: EllerSoul Records
Styles: Blues

Tracks Listing:
 1. Mellow Chick - 5:18

 3. Cross Eyed Suzie Lee - 3:04
 4. Life Changes - 3:24

 9. V's Boogie (Bonus track) - 3:16
10. Need Your Love So Bad (Bonus track) - 6:20
11. Same Thing Could Happen To You (Bonus track) - 3:03

It’s a recording of a Li’l Ronnie And The Grand Dukes show that was performed back in 2005. Alas, more unfinished business. Back then, The Grand Dukes consisted of Ronnie Owens, of course, on vocals & harmonica; George Sheppard on drums; Bryan Smith on bass; Robert Frahm on guitar; and John Fralin on piano & organ.Got It ‘Live’ From ’05 is the eight-song set – four originals and four covers – that was recorded live at an undisclosed venue somewhere ‘on the road’. Additionally, the disc contains three bonus tracks from the bands’ yet to be named up-coming studio release. Now there’s something to look forward to, right? Joining Ronnie on that release will be John Fralin on piano; Gordon Harrower on guitar; Michael Gallagher on drums; and John Coppenger on bass. The band opened the show with a dance floor filling original track titled “Mellow Chick” and from there, I’m sure there was no looking back. Right out of the gate they got into a groove that would have you betting they were from Southern California and not Central Virginia. I say that because the guys have what I like to call that ‘So Cool SoCal’ sound. Rod Piazza And The Mighty Flyers may have patented it, but Li’l Ronnie And The Grand Dukes have that slick, smooth and swinging swagger totally down pat. With everyone in full swing mode behind him, when Ronnie’s not blowin’ the hell out of the harp, he’s telling us about all of the characteristics the perfect woman for him must have. Good luck with that Ronnie. Another of his originals finds Ronnie in damage control mode as he’s begging his woman not to leave. The song is titled “Bettin’ On My Baby” and the gambling related lines he’s using to get her back – like “I love you baby like a gambler loves the track”, could very well be the reason she wants to leave. Musically, it’s another rhythm fueled swinger led by the fabulous drumming from George and the deep bass lines from Bryan on the big bass; and killer guitar and harp work from Robert and Ronnie – both on solo runs or the very cool cord sparring they get into. On another of the original tracks titled “Life Changes’, so does the music. This one has the guys laying down a shuffle with lots of piano highlights from John and a whole bunch of my all-time favorite harmonic sounds – those high-end Jimmy Reed notes – from Ronnie.
If you were ever gonna have the blues, “Early Monday Morning” (George Smith) is a very likely time. Showcasing his versatile style, both on the vocals and the harmonica, Ronnie puts the swag aside and belts out a masterful Chicago blues style performance on this slow blues number. Did someone say slow blues? Yes, Robert, the kind that needs some scorching note bending leads and smoking solo runs – go for it.
The last of Ronnie’s four originals is a track called “Love Trance”. It’s an awesome mix of some swampy voodoo style blues, and a little bit of funk and soul. Musically, The Grand Dukes could all very well be at disc’s best; the rhythm and percussion groove George, Bryan and John are in on the drums, bass and organ is mesmerizing; and Robert is doing the kind of things on the guitar that probably had everyone in the audience looking at their friends with one of those “are you hearing this stuff?” looks. Wow!
As live shows should, Ronnie and the guys are making sure they “Rock This House” (Jimmy Rogers) on the closing number. It is indeed a smoker that in addition to featuring everyone in full tilt jam mode, it also highlights them individually.
Because I’m hoping to tell you a whole lot more about them when the new release comes out, I’m going to do what Ronnie did by putting them on here – he teased us with them. That said, here’s a nibble: “V’s Boogie” is an original by Ronnie’s four band mates on the upcoming disc (see the credits above) and it features them on one heck of a N’awlins style instrumental romp; “Need Your Love So Bad” (Merit & Willie John) is over six minutes of slow, low down gut wrenching blues with emotional vocals from Gordon Harrower, relaxed rhythm, and stinging guitar and piano leads; and “Same Thing Can Happen To You” is a frolickin’, up tempo rendition of a Lazy Lester tune.
Other tracks from the live show include: “Cross Eyed Susie Lee” (George Smith) and “Hey Little Girl” (Zuzu Bolin).

Tracks Listing:
 1. Stumblebum - 6:08
 2. Under The Tent - 5:25
 3. Time Stands Still - 5:17
 4. Blue, Blue Wind - 6:49
 5. The River Only Flows One Way (WH Vocal) - 7:21

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Originally released on the Deluxe Edition CD of Gov’t Mule’s 2023 album, Peace… Like A River, the Time Of The Signs EP is now available for the first time digitally and on vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday.”
It features five tracks: The latter-day Led Zeppelinesque crunge of Stumblebum; the ’70s-style San Francisco psychedelic folk-rock of Under The Tent; the spry Police-style groove-rock of Time Stands Still; the slowly blistering sax-flecked midnight blues of Blue, Blue Wind; and the eccentric, Tom Waitsian dub jam of The River Only Flows One Way, with Warren Haynes on the microphone instead of Billy Bob Thornton, who guested on a prevIously released version.
Peace… Like a River is the most varied album that Gov’t Mule have made, and certainly the most concise. There is no room for noodling, even when some tracks go over the seven-minute mark. Obviously there are riffs – where would Gov’t Mule be without them? – but more thought has gone into how the song will develop around them.
The same applies to ”Time Of The Signs EP”, all strong numbers of foot-tapping nature. We have here another half hour of quality music, such as the addictive rocker ‘Stumblebum’ which no Mule fan should miss.

Surprises come and go, but here's hoping that Connecticut's Ryan Hartt & the Blue Hearts are around for a long, long time. A stripped-down four-piece outfit with octane to spare and the chops to match, Hartt and the gang deal out some serious and smoldering jump, swing, and alley blues proving that the West Coast isn't the only hotbed for this style. Hartt's harmonica is sizzling and thick showing that he's listened to a wide range of players, from Little Walter to William Clarke, as well as Rod Piazza, George Smith, and many others, even quoting Smith in the romping True Love. Guitar chores are handled by Eric Ducoff, whose numerous influences are far too lengthy to list if his playing here is any indication; he tears off bizarre phrases and searing riffs with ease and leaves the grandstanding aside, delivering only what's necessary to raise the stakes. The rhythm section consists of Steve Combs on the upright bass and drumming from Nick Toscano, while guests include Rick Holmstrom who produced, Steve Mugalian on percussion and the Fisher-Price xylophone (no kiddin' - it works too!), New Englanders Troy Gonyea and Nick Adams stepping in on guitar, and Mark Stevens tackling piano duties. There's nothing pretentious about any of the tracks here and the level of excitement is as consistent as the seriousness and goodtime attitude with Sallie Mae being a lowdown Excello-flavored slow blues, the storming On My Mind, and the driving title track, all with Hartt's thick and greasy harp, and Ducoff sizzling on a handful including the careening Whizzbang, a brilliant instrumental, and I'd Be A Fool, a slow grinder with searing licks and wicked tone. Made up of mostly original material, the songwriting is as solid as the playing and shows that this band has done their homework, but what comes across more than anything is that this band understands the nuances that make a set balanced. With over-production far too consistent nowadays, the low-tech approach here is fresh and rewarding, another touch making it seem like this crew just stepped out of the 1950s and into your living room. Great stuff.

Baker Gurvitz Army - Live 1975

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2023

Size: 177,9 MB
Label: Cherry Red Records Ltd

 1. Wotever it is -  6:36

Brothers Paul and Adrian Gurvitz scored an international hit single with still evergreen rocker ‘Race With The Devil’ in 1968, while playing guitar and bass respectively in Gun. Subsequently, as Three Man Army they faired less better, albeit recording three albums. Inviting former Cream and Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker to join them, his own Airforce band having just puttered out, they rebranded as the Baker Gurvitz Army, expanding beyond the power trio line-up once their 1974 self-titled debut album had been recorded, they brought on board vocalist Mr. Snips (Steve Parsons) and keyboard player Peter Lemer for live performances and subsequent release Elysian Encounter.
This remastered and expanded record features live recordings from that first tour, in 1975, and though these days we might consider them something of an unknown quantity – at best a twig on Baker’s rock family tree? – the warm reception that opens their performance at Reading University proves they had an enthusiastic audience.
They open with ‘Wotever It Is’ a groovy kid of number. In some regards it’s not dissimilar to the kind of R ’n B meets classic rock extemporising Rare Earth were having hits with over in the USA around the same time. Nearer home, think Osibisa, due to Baker’s afro-rock styling, but there are also pop sensibilities in the vocal hooks and you could just as easily picture some 70s dance group doing their thing to this on a variety show on TV. It doesn’t really go anywhere but as a warm-up and to get you in the mood, it offers a nice buzz.
A co-write by the original trio, ‘The Gambler’ is by Adrian Gurvitz, who’d later have a big solo hit with the ballad ‘Classic’, and write songs for acts as diverse as Hot Chocolate and the England World Cup Squad, before getting into film soundtrack compositions, such as for The Bodyguard, that won a Grammy Award. Most of the songs on this band’s debut had been intended for a fourth Three Man Army album, though the sleeve notes point out two numbers were Baker’s influences shine through. As one looks across the credits to this collection Baker and the guitarist wrote the bulk of the songs.
As it is, ‘The Gambler’ takes us down another unexpected route, in the manner of a country ballad that gets a little harder further down the line, but as with the previous number it’s the Gurvitz brothers’ backing harmonies over which Snips (who’d previously fronted Sharks) sings the lead that the overriding melody is affected. Lemer (who’s been in various prog and jazz outfits) delivers some attractive piano touches, and later what might be a mellotron offering a brief orchestral string sound. Gurvitz’s guitar also latterly begins to stir, immediately recognisable as the tone that produced ‘Race With The Devil’ and as the record progresses – like so many guitarists back then – possessing an individual character to his sound. Gurvitz and Lenner are musically at the forefront, on a cover of Hendrix’s ‘Freedom’. A little slower with a different rhythm, frankly you could easily see a band like The Temptations making this arrangement a hit single back then. However, they shift it up a gear or two too, with some soloing and jamming workouts reminiscent of both Issac Hayes and Blood, Sweat & Tears at times.
‘Phil’ is a slow blues guitar led number that becomes progressively jazzier as Lemer’s electric piano comes in during its long introduction, then when Snips starts singing a more US styled rocker, before further jazzy prog excursions where Baker and Paul Gurvitz address the engine room of the band with upbeat snazzy rhythms. The song itself being dedicated to Baker’s mentor jazz drummer Phil Seaman, who it sounds like does a lot of the song introductions, being no wallflower.
‘Remember’ is another number where it starts off whimsically slow but intermittently hits the power switch, also meanderingly into jazzy prog territory with Lener’s synthesiser pointing the way for Don Airey in Colosseum II’s Strange New Flesh that was but a year away. In the latter section, lest we forget who he is, Baker starts doing these tour-de-force rolls around his kit the band following suit with power-driven rock fusion. As if on the same we have ‘Memory Lane’ next that’s more muscular fusion with Lener’s organ and Snips vocals adding upbeat R ‘n B to the mix, only for it go a little psychedelic then have them throw us yet a further curve with an extended drum solo before eventually going into a vocal chant of “Why don’t you come with me” alongside audience clapping before climaxing.
Baker’s shaking out an afro-beat amid some more hefty drum rolls as ‘People’ opens, the group harmonies are also back while Snip’s lead voice is powerful out front, it being an upbeat number, incorporating jazz rock with some particularly fine scowling guitar licks, sci-fi sounding prog rock effects and some funk in there too. An invigorating number to end the set on. From here on, the tracks were recorded the same year at the New Victoria Theatre and are presumably the added tracks for this expanded collection. There’s another drum solo from Mr Baker, and even if you don’t care for them, you have to concede he bloody knows what he’s doing and why, it’s not just all for effect and look how fast I can go That it ends with the riff to ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’ leads me to suspect this section isn’t the original running order. The next track’s is actually the title track from the as yet unreleased 1976 Hearts On Fire album, and written by Baker and proves to be the most blues rocking in their set, so the closest to Cream live and the million other bands that followed in their wake. ‘Help Me’ is another Baker number, despite which this time you’re reminded of the early Yes, lots of bravado adventuring musicality, vocal harmonies and a song that appears to reverberate with the social concerns of the time. That the collection ends with a cover of ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’ that Baker wasn’t actually involved in the writing of, kind of ironic, but at the heart of it – beyond the all-consuming riff and hook line chorus that every cover band learns to mimic – the drum pattern is a sideways shuffling afro-beat contrasting with the main melody direction but leading its changes. Here, as with previous introductions, the original madman of rock sounds incredibly laid back and in good spirits, introduces the band and dedicates the song to Jimi Hendrix, and it’s a blustery loud version we get to hear. Peter Lemer would eventually leave the band, keyboards being played by others on their final studio release, and the sleeve notes tell us Baker and Adrian Gurvitz weren’t getting on – Hardly a surprise despite the amiable nature of Baker’s live commentary then. Ultimately, the financial fallout from manager Bill Fehilly dying in a plane crash but paid to them going further – The former Scottish bingo hall owner having also managed Nazareth and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Listening to this live recording it’s undoubtedly where they’re in their element. Had they continued they would need to have evolved into a snappier techno jazz rock outfit like Colosseum II or Brand X to maintain a cult following, and that was unlikely. Had they got together a few years earlier, and made inroads over in the USA they may well have scored some hit singles, utilising their R ‘n B dance strengths, giving both Rare Earth and Santana a run for their money. As it is, we have the records, and this one’s actually pretty good.

This new album allows us to see Danielsen’s and his group main influences, always framed in the different styles of sixties, seventies an eighties blues, with classic blues but at the same time actual rhythms, inspired by the sound and grooves coming from the past decades of Chicago blues style.
The recording gathers seventeen songs, ten of them own compositions and the rest varied versions coming from musicians like Willie Dixon, Tampa Red, Mack Rice, Joe Liggins, Shitty Henry and Beard/Gibbons/Hill. Besides his band, Danielsen has counted with a series of guests such as Anita Fabiani and Christoph Karas on keyboards, Florian Faltner and Christian Morana on bass, Federico Berteramo on guitar and Jorge Costales and Juraj Schweigert on harmonica, with a special mention to two Argentinian musicians settled for a long time in Spain, like Chino Swingslide on guitar and Tota Blues on harmonica, each one in a song. Slowly but with a firm step Jörg Danielsen is gradually reaching a name and a place in Austrian blues scene.

Albert and the band were seriously on that night; I felt really good about it.” Adds Albert Castiglia: “The stars were aligned that night in White Rock: the perfect room, perfect acoustics, an amazing audience and incendiary playing by everyone in the band. Editorial Reviews:
"Al Smyth--who is this man? Is he the Robert Plant, Keith Richards, Dr. John he conjures up on his balls-out album of blues, moves and misty hops? Or is he simply the most talented white boy in Columbus to rechannel his blue-hearted influences? Yes, yes--I think I know now: he's that guy I saw at the 'Blues Garage' at the Community Festival, riveting my beer-fogged mind with a country-blues yowl worthy of Son House sittin' on a front porch in the Piedmont. This in the middle of the afternoon. And yes, he's that guy I saw in the bar on a weeknight go from the south London blues of five thin British boys to a Johnny Winter growlin'-at-the-moon ode to rotten eggs with hot legs. And he was definitely the guy keeping all those boogie-hungry working men and women entertained enough they stayed out too late on a work night. No easy feat. In the end, this shy phenomenon is just a guy named Al Smyth. He'll polka-dot your blues with enough personality to make you love the genre all over again. Welcome to the continuing story of Al Smyth, an evolution in progress". - John Petric Music Critic, Other Paper.

Tyrone Cotton’s earliest musical revelation was listening to the raspy, inspirational voice of his grandfather, the Reverend Cleveland Roosevelt Williams, at his childhood home in Louisville, KY. Cotton began playing guitar along to the sounds of popular rock and blues artists and draws inspiration for his debut album from influences such as Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, and Mississippi John Hurt, who intrigued Tyrone with his “finger pickin’ and soft, wispy voice.” Cotton’s debut album, Man Like Me, is the result of a lifelong journey of his nearly 30 years of performing in venues and as a beacon of the Louisville music community where he continues to reside today. The collection of songs developed over the past decade and documented on Man Like Me, is a deeply stirring reflection of Cotton’s own experiences which explores connection, loss, hope and resurrection, punctuated by a voice that is hauntingly evocative yet equally warm and alluring.

 8. Grammys Caddy - 3:35
 9. Butterfly Fingers - 4:14
10. Funky Bitch - 4:40

Since the release of his intrepid debut album Gateway to the Galaxy, Marcus Rezak has become a staple in today’s touring circuit known for his virtuosic guitar playing and flexibility to maneuver through a variety of projects. His road warrior reputation spans bandleader endeavors that include his high-octane Grateful Dead tribute project Shred is Dead; his newly-launched Gumbo project performing notable 90s Phish shows in their entirety and performing original music under his name. The Chicago native has connected with GRAMMY-award-winner Paul Nelson to produce his next body of work entitled Guitar Head, a blues-oriented album that melds his prestige in the jam, improvisation, and songwriting world with his roots that hail from the “Home of the Blues.” Rezak connected with esteemed blues guitarist and producer, Paul Nelson, after a performance he had at The Music Room in Yarmouth, MA. They immediately hit it off after an impressive performance as they dove through Nelson’s distinguished career which includes being hand-picked to join Johnny Winter’s band in 2010 and producing several of his records including his GRAMMY-nominated albums I'm a Blues Man, Roots, and Step Back, which won the GRAMMY Award for Best Blues Album and debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart for Blues Albums. Nelson enthusiastically conveyed that he would love to produce Rezak’s next record. They recorded the album at The Music Room’s world-class, in-house studio laying down Rezak’s initial ideas in one day of pre-production and later joined by Rezak’s frequent collaborators and top-call east coast musicians Adrian Tramontano (Twiddle & Kung Fu) on drums and Chris DeAngelis (Kung Fu & The Machine) on bass laying the rhythm section foundation for Guitar Head in a vigorous 1-day session that produced 10 songs. After Rezak honed the final guitar and vocal parts in subsequent sessions, the tracks were sent to keyboardist Ray Paczkowski of Trey Anastasio Band, whom Rezak had worked with on his 2020 EP Truth in Sound. With Ray’s finessed keyboard parts recorded at his home studio, the final piece of the puzzle was having Erik Lawrence of Levon Helm Ramble Horns to fill out four of the tracks with horn parts.Nelson shares Rezak’s fervor for the forthcoming record, “Marcus is a force to be reckoned with—as both a guitarist songwriter and vocalist. It was a real pleasure to produce his latest album which I feel showcases his diversity and amazing talent.”

On their first disc "Measured Chaos LIVE", recorded live in 2003, the band combines inspired classics and satisfying originals. For example; BB King's "The Thrill Is Gone" is wrapped in dreamy intensity and Peter Green's "Oh Well" is played with sheer animal force. The CD slides effortlessly between Rock, Blues, Jazz and Soul for a thorough look at what "The Blues" has become when it's seen through the eyes of four very accomplished musicians.

From 1977 until 1980, a variety of Steppenwolf bands were put out on the road by concert promoter Steve Green. Another promoter, David Pesnell, reportedly acted as manager for an incarnation featuring former members Nick St. Nicholas, Goldy McJohn and Kent Henry, and new lead singer, Tom Pagan. Plans for a new album circulated. A new studio album, produced by Phil Spector, with Larry Green on lead vocals, was attempted in 1978, but abandoned due to Pesnell and Spector’s hateful relationship. The relationship ended with a well-documented fist fight between the two at the Whisky a Go Go in which Pesnell sent Spector to the hospital, where he stayed for three nights. Assault charges were dropped against Pesnell after the Los Angeles Police Department determined Spector had instigated the fight. Another Steppenwolf band, launched in the summer of 1978, featured lead vocalist Bob Simpson, and original members Goldy McJohn and Rushton Moreve, with Kent Henry. This version recorded new tracks for a proposed album which was never released. A splinter Steppenwolf band (which featured no members from any Steppenwolf band fronted by John Kay) appeared around the same time with lead vocalist Don Coenen. That line-up included keyboardist Geoff Emery and guitarist Tony Flynn. Another album, The Night Of The Wolf, was said to have been recorded and produced by Pesnell in 1979 with lead vocalist Bob Simpson, featuring such songs as “Night of the Wolf” and “I Don’t Want To Lose You,” and “Randy’s Rodeo.” A concert tour in the U.S., Canada and Europe was promoted by Pesnell with the opening acts including Iron Butterfly. The St. Nicholas/McJohn grouping eventually disbanded due to exhaustion and heavy drug use by St. Nicholas, Goldy McJohn and drummer Frankie Banali. St. Nicholas formed yet another version of a band named Steppenwolf and went back out on the road. This grouping included lead singer Tommy Holland, lead guitarist Ruben DeFuentes, Emery, and future Keel/W.A.S.P./L.A. Guns drummer Steve Riley. The retooled band returned to the studio to revamp tracks for the new album, but it was never released. McJohn also eventually headed back out himself with another lineup that first featured Peter Graw on lead vocals, then another line-up that featured lead vocalist Nick Graham and sometimes included Kent Henry, who had just departed a touring Wolf band that featured Tim West on vocals. The Graham/McJohn/Henry version pitched an entire new Steppenwolf album to record labels, which was actually a project recorded by Graham’s High Intensity band adding McJohn and Henry to the existing tracks. The album was blocked from release. Frankie Banali later went on to join Quiet Riot. After hearing of these multiple other Steppenwolf incarnations, John Kay became furious. An original agreement among the band members in the early 1970s stated that anyone leaving forfeited any rights on the group’s name, while the last original members standing when the group disbanded (Kay and Jerry Edmonton) would have exclusive claims on the name hereafter. At their lawyers’ advice, Kay and Edmonton agreed to license the name to the others. This licensing agreement stated that McJohn and St. Nicholas would have to give up their Steppenwolf royalties forever to go forward. They both agreed. Eventually, this agreement was terminated after promised fees were not paid to Kay and Edmonton. After the compact optical digital disc (CD) became the new form of presenting old music by 1987, McJohn and St. Nicholas lost large amounts in additional royalties from their time in the authentic Steppenwolf band. Kay took to the road in 1980 with a new line-up as John Kay and Steppenwolf.
Kay had a couple of meetings with David Pesnell (after his release from rehabilitation for his drinking and drug problems), about management, concert promotions and producing a new album for the band. Pesnell wanted to produce an album featuring new songs on Side A, by the reformed band Three Dog Night and with Side B of the album featuring songs by Steppenwolf. The album’s working name was “Back to Back”, a play on each band having a side of the album and the fact the bands were back together again. Pesnell’s concept was simple: each band would record four new songs, with a fifth song on each side featuring a medley of the band’s past songs. This would give the Pesnell-produced album a double release of singles to support a concert tour featuring the two bands. Even though both bands liked the concept of the album and tour, the arguments included who would be Side A and Side B and which of the two would headline the upcoming concert tour. The reformed John Kay and Steppenwolf line-up featured John Kay, Michael Palmer (guitars, backing vocals), Steve Palmer (drums, backing vocals), Danny Ironstone (keyboards, backing vocals) and Kurtis Teel on bass. The Palmer brothers had played in a group called Tall Water and had also been involved with Kay in his solo career playing live gigs in the late 1970s. Teel was replaced by Chad Peery and Ironstone by Brett Tuggle by 1981, and the new grouping released Live in London overseas. (by wikipedia) So, “Live in London” is the first album by John Kay & Steppenwolf, originally released in 1981 on Mercury/PolyGram in Australia only ! “Recorded at the Lyceum in London, England during our first tour of Europe in eight years. We were pleasantly surprised by the warmth of our reception. Our fans in the UK had not forgotten us despite our absence and we truly enjoyed playing both new and familiar music that night.” (John Kay)

The Gueyfarers (pronounced like Wayfarers) are Jimmy Hartman on bass, Brandon Custer on drums. Matt Kirk, and Matt Cain on keys.
Matt Kirk grew up in the hill country of Texas with a talented musical family.  He has been playing music for as long as he can remember and was more than likely listening to his mother sing in the womb.  His mother Sylvia is a long time musician and singer in the San Antonio area and they regularly play gigs together to this day.  Their album “Matt and Ma” was released in 2022.  Matt’s influences span from folk and country to blues and classic rock to Tejano to Americana and western swing.  Individual influences include the great Levon Helm, Jimmy LaFave, Leon Russell, Doug Sahm, Auggie Meyers and Flaco Jimenez, Monte Montgomery, and Scott Byers among several others.
His debut album displays many of those influences in the music and the lyrics.  From the first soulful track about hanging out in a sleepy, river town to the heartfelt ballads about love shaping your life and love lost, the listener is taken through some of Matt’s own life experiences.  He writes about dreams, he writes about being ok, and he writes tranquil instrumentals.  The accordion (Josh Baca), the mandolin, the washboard (Kevin Russell), steel guitar, violin, and an all-star horn section (Grooveline Horns) all make appearances on the album.  Ron Knuth and Jackson Parten are featured on two tracks.
“River” is a solid rocker on the album, and the blues influence is evident in “Poor Man’s Blues”.  Tommy Detamore’s steel guitar guides you through “Drowning in Sin”. Gene Elder and Steve Katz provide a euphonious backdrop to “Take My Heart”. The incomparable Monte Montgomery plays guitar on “Dreams Are Never Lost”.
And certainly not the be left out is the family affair with Sylvia Kirk, sister Katie, niece Maddie Kirk, and Tracy Wenzel singing back up and harmony vocals on a couple of tunes – the masterful “Weight of the World” and the aforementioned rocker “River”.Matt Kirk and the Gueyfarers are an exceptional live act in a musically abundant area of Texas and are a can’t miss if anyone has the opportunity to catch them in person.
