Texas blues pianist Mike Kindred has had a long career playing with some of the major figures in blues and rock from his native state. He took classical piano lessons as a child while also developing an interest in jazz and blues. In his teens, he founded a rock band called Krackerjack with Tommy Shannon and Uncle John Turner. Among the guitarists who passed through the band in Austin was Stevie Ray Vaughan. During this period, Kindred and W.C. Clark co-wrote the song "Cold Shot," which Vaughan recorded on his second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather, in 1984 and played frequently thereafter. The song went on to become a blues-rock standard, also recorded by Pat Travers, Dr. John, and Steve Stevens, among others.
Kindred, meanwhile, was a member of the rock band the Werewolves, appearing on their self-titled debut album in 1978, then became an in-demand session musician and touring bandmember, accompanying such artists as Joe Ely, Lou Ann Barton, James Cotton, Gatemouth Brown, and Delbert McClinton in the 1980s and '90s. Eventually, he formed another band, Shakedown, and also appeared in duos. In 2003, he recorded Handstand, his debut album for Loudhouse Records, playing piano and singing with drummer Dexter Walker accompanying him. It was released in February 2004. ~ William Ruhlmann

11. The Dog Is Missing You - 5:30
12. Dooley's Stroll - 2:43
13. Golden Sunday - 5:29

A native of Austria now living in Dallas, Mr. Dozzler plays the blues better than most American musicians. Yet, as the title of The Blues and a Half implies, he doesn’t stick to one style. He’s just as convincing blazing through zydeco, boogie-woogie and New Orleans funk. Mr. Dozzler is a fine singer-keyboardist and songwriter – he wrote all 13 tunes – and he’s smart enough not to hog the spotlight. Some of the CD’s high points arrive during solos by Dallas guitar aces Anson Funderburgh, Jim Suhler, Mike Morgan and Hash Brown.

Born in Seattle, I was adopted and then moved to the Carbon County area of Montana at age 12. I grew up fishing Rock Creek, playing guitar, and wandering the beautiful Absaroka-Beartooth region until eventually graduating from college and pursuing a diverse career in business. I first emerged as a musical artist in 2016 performing solo shows and evolving various band formats until finding my pace as a touring poet-guitartist. I crave the healing balance of the Pacific sea, and I love the soulful power of the Beartooth Mountains. Having tasted both darkness and light in life, I recognize that positive change and expression through music is a healing, beautiful thing. I admire strength of character, unusual beauty, and fierce spirit. It is essential that men treat women with respect, love, and kindness. Troublesome thoughts and bad energy must be laid to rest, and we must all realize our natural purpose. I know my purpose is bringing music and poetry to those who dance, laugh, cry, need light, seek peace, suffer, grieve, thirst for love,  I find peace in accepting that it isn't always possible to know all the "answers" or to always feel like I am on the "right" side of the fence.

Rory’s music reached a massive audience from Norway to Spain, from Japan to the USA, Covering all parts of the globe and producing some of the greatest rock/blues albums of the 60’s 70's and the 80's.
Sadly we lost Rory on 14th June 1995, to his devoted fans and followers this was the ultimate tragedy. The BAND OF FRIENDS is not a tribute to Rory, more a celebration of his life and music. 'Please be assured that this is no tribute band. Think a rendition of a composer's former work performed by those who have a full right to both perform it and choose their musicians. RG would approve. No Doubt' ~

12. She's A Heartache - 5:01

The hot and heavy Boneshakers were (not were) with Was (Not Was) throughout the excellent '80s, whipping out records and touring extensively with just about everybody. The band expanded over two decades into a dozen directions, all bountiful, dipping in and out of radio rotation although remaining consistently on international tour. Boneshaker vocalist Sweet Pea Atkinson (who out-silk-suits Morris Day in the stage fashion department) and jaw-dropping guitarist Randy Jacobs worked steadily with Brian Wilson, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Lyle Lovett, Iggy Pop, Ofra Haza, and Coolio, among scores of other A-list playfolk. Their 1999 release Shake the Planet is a hardwood floor-trembler, explosive with five times as much funk as rock, and ten times as much soul on top of it. A rare record that feels almost as good as a live show, the Shakers' stamp of diversity is all over it: "Ball and Chain" is a lowdown funky marvel, as is "Water in the Well" and "Hand Over Fist, Heart Over Mind," thanks in particular to the earth-funky contributions of bassist Michael Henderson. "Teach Me How to Stay" and "Compromise, Communicate" are soul-searching pleas by hip adult men looking for an enlightened attitude in the romance department, and "Pouring Gasoline on a Burning Man" is just straight-up tight and on-time work on the part of everyone. Hopefully this CD marks the recorded resurgence of a fine band who sounds even better on their own than beside the royal company they consistently keep.

Guitarist Wayne Perkins started life in Birmingham, AL, in (1951). He was raised in a house filled with six sisters, one brother, and parents who loved music and played guitar. It seemed only natural for Perkins to pick up one of those guitars when he was about six years old. With a lot of practice he taught himself to play the instrument. At only 15, Perkins got his first gig as a session musician, in the Prestige Recording Studio. Shortly after that he found work performing with a couple of small-time bands. One group was called the Vikings. Charles Nettles was a fellow member. In 1968, drummer Jasper Guarino helped Perkins land a steady job as a session guitarist in a studio owed by Quin Ivy. Perkins made a whole 100 bucks a week at first. After a while he left session work temporarily to form another band, Smith, Perkins and Smith. The trio recorded a couple of albums and toured in England. When the group spilt, Perkins moved on to bands like the Gap Band, the Shelter People Band, Take No Prisoners, Fever, and Problem Child. Another group he performed with was the Alabama Power Band that had been formed by his brother Dale. It later became known as Crimson Tide and completed a couple of albums. Mendo Hotel In 1995, Perkins at last recorded a solo debut album, Mendo Hotel, that carries tracks like "Big Stratocaster," "Little Girl Eyes," "Money No Good," and "Where Did Love Go." Through all his bands and even his solo, Perkins is probably best known in the music world for his powerful work as a session guitarist. His name is listed in the credits of recordings by artists including the Alabama State Troupers, Ben Atkins, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Michael Bolton, Angela Bofill, the Everly Brothers, Louise Miranda, the Oak Ridge Boys, Billy Ray Cyrus, the Rolling Stones, and many others.

 8. That Little Girl - 4:45
 9. Whipping Boy - 4:28
10. Look Don't Touch - 3:47
11. Make Mamas Proud - 4:05

Boyd Small has been playing drums and singing for many years. In his long biography he is presented as a true point of reference for the blues scene in Portland, his hometown. Many are the musicians who have played with him as well as the bands who have seen him sing behind the drum skins. Boyd has lived in Amsterdam for 10 years where he founded 'Cool Buzz', an independent label dedicated to blues and alternative roots music. 'Diamond Boy' is his fourth album and is the result of a session recorded during his last stay in Portland, in a single day, surrounded by his musician friends, including faithful bassist Willy Barber. The great groove and that sense of relaxation that is only present when musicians who have known each other for a long time play, are the merits of 'Diamond Boy', a record that can be compared to a pleasant appetizer as much as a delicious dessert: who does not know what to expect from the music of Boyd Small, dessert for all those who know him and have admired him live and who will “savor” him again with this record ~ Jacopo Meille

 6. White Man Dancing Blues - 4:26
 7. My True Story - 3:01
 8. Queen of Pittsburgh - 5:46
 9. Somethin's Cookin' - 5:47

Tedi Brunetti has been an unrelenting force in the music industry for many years, pushing limits with each subsequent project she gets involved with. On “The Queen of Pittsburgh”, Brunetti’s sophomore solo release, she crowns herself with a title that fans and critics believe she aptly deserves. Having fallen in love with music at a very young age, Tedi decided to pursue her passion. For a long while, she was the touring drummer for names like Eloise Laws, Isis’ Carol MacDonald and Witch, and The B-Girls, produced by Debbie Harry and Mick Jones. Tired of hiding her voice and talents behind other singers, Tedi formed the Tedi Brunetti Band, an outfit that has become a force to reckon with, in and out of Pittsburgh. “The Queen of Pittsburgh” is only her second album and is expected to be released later this summer, on July the 20th, with a teaser single “Evil Woman”, warming up to this much-anticipated release. If Tedi’s track record is anything to go by, her fans are in for a huge treat in this forthcoming album. For Tedi, “The Queen of Pittsburgh” is not business as usual. The album is a journey back to the music that she grew up listening to. “The album began as a legacy album of sorts” is how she describes the original idea of the album. Now, she can look back with nostalgia to all the fun times she had while producing the album, on which her husband and two kids all perform. The album explores a myriad of genres, from bluesy tunes to hints of jazz, to all the styles of pop classics of the 20th century. “The Queen of Pittsburgh” packs the old, the familiar, and the new in a thrilling album, that is expected to delight fans of Pittsburgh’s reigning Queen.

Mick Clarke first attracted attention in 1968, playing guitar in the south London-based duo Killing Floor with Bill Thorndycraft (vocals/harmonica). They made two well-received albums, Killing Floor in 1969 and Out of Uranus the following year. Killing Floor played in London and elsewhere in the U.K., backing American bluesman Freddie King, and also jammed with other visitors, including Howlin' Wolf. In mid-1972 Killing Floor folded, but Clarke played with Daddy Longlegs before forming his own band, Salt, in the mid-'70s, recording the rare EP All Wired Up in 1978. After a spell in the United States, Clarke returned to the U.K. at the start of the '80s to form the Mick Clarke Band. For the next two decades the band worked extensively, touring the U.K. and Europe, receiving critical acclaim for their live shows and albums. Critics and audiences in the U.S. also reacted very favorably to the band. In 2005 the band included drummer Chris Sharley (drums, ex-Sassafras), Dave Rea (bass), and Dave Lennox (keyboards). Among other musicians who have worked with Clarke over the years are keyboard player Peter Terry; bass players Mick Phillips, Len Davies, Ian Ellis, Eddie Masters, and Russell Prett; blues harpists Stevie Smith, Dave Newman and Mark Feltham; and drummers Ron Berg, Slash, Mike Hirsh, and Wilgar Campbell. An important part of the repertoire of Clarke's bands are his own compositions, which include "Murderers' Home," "Cheap," "Walking in the Dark," "The Killingest Place," "Second Hand Dream," and "New Star Over Texas.

Memphis-based blues band Delta Highway is a fairly new unit, only coalescing as a band after 2003. This band’s music is pure living blues for modern times; it’s not rock-blues, soul-blues or any other hyphen-blues. The band features guitar, harp, organ/keys, bass and drums - no frills, just fine soulful ensemble blues playing. The band was originally formed by, and is centered on Brandon Santini (harp and vocals) and Justin Sulek (guitar). Both men were originally from the piedmont region of North Carolina, and came to Memphis in 2003 in order to absorb the blues sounds and history of the Mississippi delta region. Traditional sounds form the core of the Delta Highway’s sound, but the band doesn’t let their love of traditional blues forms stagnate them or tie their hands. They take the best of what makes the blues such a vital art form and merge it with their own sensibilities and ideas. Santini is a fine young singer, possessing soulful, deep-toned vocals with a slight drawl which acts to enhance that soulfulness. At times his tone reminds me of Steve Guyger, at other times a grittier version of Noah Hunt (who you may know from his work with Kenny Wayne Sheppard) and at other times his phrasing is reminiscent of Paul Reddick’s. Brandon’s amplified harp tone is heavy, thick and warm - I hear influences ranging from Gary Primich to Mark Sallings to Jason Ricci, even some John Popper (but don’t let that scare you away if you’re not a Popper fan.) There’s a good chance that Santini will become a rising star in the world of blues harp players. Delta Highway’s rhythm section (at the time of this recording) consisted of bassist Paul Chase and drummer Steady Keven Eddy (Keven has played with both Mojo Buford and Blind Mississippi Morris). If I’m not mistaken, both men used to work with Jason Ricci, during Ricci’s Memphis/Mississippi days – prior to the formation of his New Blood band. Guitarist Justin Sulek is another young player you should keep your eyes on. He knows when to sit back and play to the songs, knows when to step up front, displays a nice tonal palette, and can really play that greasy, swampy North Mississippi/Memphis style well. Also, he know how to, and seem to enjoy, playing along with a harp player. Not all guitarists master this trick. The band reminds me a lot of Paul Reddick’s band in his 1990s ‘Sidemen’ days, but with a growly drawl channeling Memphis grit and Mississippi Hill Country feel. Brandon has a style of vocal and harmonica phrasing that reminds me very much of Reddick’s work (this should be considered a compliment), although his vocal tone is different that Paul’s vocal tone. Personally, I think this band has tremendous potential. In fact, I’m not the only one who is thinking that way – Delta Highway was nominated for the 2009 Blues Music Award in the Best New Debut Artist category. That is high praise, indeed.

Fellow American guitarist and singer Danny Adler had invited pianist Bob Hall, drummer Mickey Waller and me to do the gig in London's steamy Dingwall club. We thoroughly enjoyed working together, and decided that night to form a permanent band. Veteran sax player Dick Heckstall Smith would soon join us. A good time was had by all for the next 13 years but after five albums and countless European Tours, Danny Adler decided to return to the States, and the De Luxe band members amicably went their separate ways. I took a break for a while, but in 1994 lure of the De Luxes is was too hard to resist, and I invited seasoned London musicians Phil Taylor, Alan Vincent and Dave Beaumont to join me in the De Luxe Blues Band, Mark II. We had fun and made one more album. However in 1997, we called it a day, having thoroughly enjoyed our musical alliance.
Shortly afterwards, I bumped into five musicians would eventually join me in the current De Luxe Blues Dand line-up. Bill and Daniel Smith (harp and guitar), Reg Patten (drums), Russell Baillie (vocals) and Dennis McGrath (guitar) proved to be more than worthy successors to previous De Luxe band members, and immediately hit the road... and the studio.

Many in the know have long believed that Charlie Wood was one of Memphis' best-kept musical secrets. These days, Wood lives in London and is starting to gain an international footing in the world of blues and roots music. This talented keyboardist, singer, and songwriter led a procession of small groups in and around Memphis for much of the 1990s and only moved to London in the late 2000s. Wood has a knack for writing stunningly original, witty vignettes and breaking new thematic ground in the blues idiom, and he avoids the tired old clichés of the music. Instead, he writes insightful, often funny songs in the tradition of Mose Allison, songs like "You Are Not Among Friends," "Back When I Was Stupid," "The Art of Leaving Well Enough Alone," and "Coffee Is for Me." Born in Memphis in 1967, Wood studied classical piano from a young age before getting interested in jazz piano in high school and college. By 1990, he caught his first big break, spending a year on the road with legendary blues guitarist Albert King. Back in Memphis in 1991, the Charlie Wood Trio played nightly at King's Palace Cafe on Beale Street. Over the ensuing 15 years, luminaries including Joey DeFrancesco, Georgie Fame, B.B. King, Rufus Thomas, Alvin Batiste, Tony Reedus, and others sat in at various points with Wood's trio. Wood's recordings include Southbound and Who I Am for Ben Sidran's Go Jazz label and Somethin' Else and Charlie Wood and the New Memphis Underground for the Memphis-based Daddy-O Records. In 2006, in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Wood wrote "Never Gonna Stop New Orleans," and the tune was later recorded by Irma Thomas, often referred to as New Orleans' Soul and Blues Queen.
Most recently, Wood has been living in London and touring around England and other parts of Europe, developing his audiences there, but he also signed a three-album deal with Memphis-based Archer Records back home. Wood's Flutter and Wow, produced by Norah Jones' collaborator Adam Levy, was released on Archer in 2009. Fittingly for such a gifted songwriter, it includes Wood's takes on songs by Tom Waits, Paul Simon, and Leonard Cohen, but Flutter and Wow also showcases Wood's thoughtful original songs.

This CD presents allot of original material, and delivers it with a tasteful and pleasingly varied pallet. There seems to be a deliciously sinister undercurrent that simmers right below the surface. This has much to do with Chris Claeys singing and the carefully arranged songs. In fact, it's no real surprise that keyboardist Danny Focke went on to inspire a creepy metal band. That creepy feature really works well here as it powers along these blues. One has to admire the playing, that is so well done, yet not over-powering, and still so carefully considered. Koenraad Schaballie on guitar knows how to evoke an emotion with his six strings.

Blues guitarist Tall Paul Webner has been flying under the local radar for more than 20 years, playing off nights in bars often well off the beaten path. Yet, mention his name to any number of working musicians, and the response is often, "Man, that guy can play!" Indeed, he can, and does, on this CD of mostly original material that offers a variety of grooves, all of which are there to support Webner's energetic solos and arrangements. Playing as a classic power-blues trio, the band at times has an authentic feel that reminds of ZZ Top or Stevie Ray Vaughan. But just when you think they have that Texas blues thing down, Webner's guitar moves effortlessly into a soaring psychedelic blues lick before moving on to something completely different. This is most evident on "Space Race," one of two ambitious instrumentals ("Don't Leave" is the other) that highlight this album. Ike Turner's "Matchbox" is a 12-bar blues tune on which Webner also gets to show off his chops—but the truth is, a great solo punctuates almost every tune. What's nice about the solos is the variety of sounds and effects Webner has coaxed from the guitar. "Goin Back Home" is one example of how a great sound on the instrument can communicate all it needs with some simple, well-timed phrasing. Kevin Heiderman on bass and Les Merrihew on drums are great complements to Webner.

Having scored Juno and Maple Blues Awards nominations with his previous album, Songs Of Vice and Sorrow, Toronto bluesman Julian Fauth makes a remarkably confident, funny, occasionally dark and typically low-key follow-up statement with the 18-song collection Ramblin' Son, featuring the artist's rustic and energetic honky-tonk piano work, coolly casual vocals and a bevy of great guest performers. The style of the recording is, as was its predecessor's, definitely lo-fi, even claustrophobic, but these mostly original songs benefit from close recording and one-take spontaneity. The method reinforces Fauth's reputation as a genuine original in the Canadian blues firmament, a sort of Brecht-Weill character lurking in the shadows outside the big show clutching his bag of sinister tricks. Top track: "East Toronto Nervous Breakdown" – that's just what it sounds like.

Broke Fuse - Rocket Ride

 3. Strawberry Moon - 4:35
 4. One Shot - 3:55
 5. Stingray Blues - 4:20

 9. Stolen Time - 4:32
10. I Don't Care - 1:46
11. Los Detalles del Diablo - 1:50
12. The Ballad of Sonny Shade - 5:30

Broke Fuse bandleader (if a one-man band has such a thing) Jay Moonah takes his very blues-worthy harmonica through some very unexpected turns on an esoteric romp that may raise the hackles on purists but offers some ear-catching fare just the same. The title track lays a bubbly vocal chorus atop a roots-bound groove, setting up the breezy pop style of the follow-up, “Strawberry Moon”. Other tracks of note include the slow ballad “Stolen Time” and the almost McCartney-esque “Hear the Rain”. A couple of quirky instrumental tracks- ‘Agitation” and “Los Detailes del Diablo”- provide engaging context for the harp as well. ~ Duane Verh ("Roots Music Report").
