Here is another collection featuring Mona, my favourite guitar beauty! Her creator, Jan Ingar Kvisler, is an excellent Norwegian luthier who specialises in wood and tone, and custom-made her for me in 2007. He, being a man of God, told me that he prayed before each session of working on her creation, that he would make no mistakes.
However, to his dismay, he made three significant blunders. The first was that he had miscalculated the length of her distinctive ebony fretboard, resulting in a shorter scale. The second was that when he was carving out the pick-up shapes on her flamed maple topped body, the router gouged out more than was required, necessitating his replacing the customary P90 plastic covers with custom-sized ones of the same maple wood. The third and crowning mistake, which resulted in me christening her ‘Mona’, is due to the varnish machine malfunctioning, resulting in a tiny pattern of cracks resembling the Mona Lisa painting.
Now you see, all the ‘mistakes’ give her character! Ah! An encouraging ‘life-lesson’, no? For better or worse, the seeming ‘mistakes’ in our personality or physical make-up can serve to enhance our individuality!( https://jeremyspencer.com/music/mona/)/

After many years as a sideman to singers like Betty Everett, Donny Hathaway, Gene "Duke of Earl" Chandler, Brook Benton, and many other prominent classic R&B singers, guitarist and singer/songwriter D.C. Bellamy released his debut album for the Rooster Blues label, Water to Wine, with America's Most Wanted, in the fall of 2000.
Gregory "D.C." Bellamy was born on Chicago's West Side in March 1949. He grew up in a household surrounded by musical talent, as his half brother was the late Curtis Mayfield, who would often hold rehearsals for his group, the Impressions, in the family's living room. Bellamy's grandmother purchased a piano for the family to use, and the children were all encouraged to play it. At age nine, Bellamy got his first guitar as a Christmas gift, and he began playing by ear and singing and playing along with Elvis Presley recordings. Even though he was raised in Chicago, a home for the blues, Bellamy was fascinated with rock & roll as he watched firsthand the success of Mayfield's group. But growing up on the West Side, it was hard to ignore the great abundance of blues talent in his own neighborhood, so by the time he was 14 or 15, everyone knew Bellamy was on his way to making a name for himself as a guitarist. Bellamy's mother, impressed by his earliest efforts at writing his own songs, took measures to ensure that he found people to help copyright his songs and put them into commercial format. When he was 17, he followed the rising popularity of the Impressions, Jerry Butler, Lou Rawls, and other great vocalists. He was introduced to singer Betty Everett, whose career was clearly on the rise. After hearing a short demonstration of his guitar-playing skills, Everett hired Bellamy for her tour, which developed into a ten-year tenure accompanying Everett on her tours around the world. During times back home, Bellamy freelanced, accompanying the likes of Donny Hathaway, Gene Chandler, Brook Benton, and others. Also back home, Bellamy began working with guitarist and singer Jimmy Reed, and the endless songwriting and guitar-playing possibilities of the art form began to blossom in his mind. His band became the house band at a Chicago club, Beale Street, after singer Bobby Rush left a long residency there. Bellamy's various bands worked Beale Street for eight years, and he had a chance to play with everyone in Chicago or passing through Chicago at that time, including Artie "Blues Boy" White, Otis Clay, Cicero Blake, Lefty Dizz, and Z.Z. Hill. During this period, he was constantly writing more of his own songs and working on developing his own distinctive vocal and guitar style. In early 2000, Bellamy returned to the recording studio to record an album under his own name for the then newly relaunched Rooster Blues label. Water to Wine was recorded at Blue Heaven Studios in Salina, KS, not far from his new home base of Kansas City, KS. During this time, Bellamy held a residency at the Kansas City venue Club Paradox. Bellamy is accompanied on Water to Wine, a fine collection of Chicago-styled originals, by drummer James "Spoon" Wilson, keyboardists Harrison Irons and Ray Hopper, lead guitarist Jimmy D. Lane, bassists Louis Villeri and Ben Shult, and harmonica player Dan "Juice" Hettinger. The results are stellar, a fine collection of original songs that don't sound like anyone else you've ever heard in modern blues. Songs like "Water to Wine," "Next Door Neighbor's Woman," and "I Won't Be Around You" are written in a style that is influenced by his famous half brother, Curtis Mayfield. But on Water to Wine, Bellamy and his band also serve up inspiring cover versions of Peter Chatman's "If You See Kay" and John Lee Hooker's "Dimples."

Frank Biner was well-known in the San Francisco and Oakland, California area as a powerhouse vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter of the highest caliber. Frank passed away unexpectedly in May of 2001 and is greatly missed by his many friends and fans. Frank was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he learned to play the guitar. The Biner family relocated to Evanston, Illinois in 1965. Frank began his entertainment career in 1966 in Chicago working with the The Little Boy Blues, a legendary group of those hallowed times, opening shows for various acts coming through town. He migrated to the San Francisco Bay Area in the late sixties where he met blues legend, Mike Bloomfield, formerly of the Butterfield Blues Band and The Electric Flag. Like many a visiting midwesterner, he found the atmosphere and climate so appealing that he determined never to leave. As early as 1971, Frank was working various nightclubs and KSAN Radio's "Live Performance" with Bloomfield. On arriving in the Bay Area, Frank quickly established himself in the East Bay Funk scene, with regular gigs at the Long Branch and Keystone, clubs that were then in their prime and serving up a rich variety of fresh talent. Here he shared many a booking with the likes of Tower of Power, Eddie Money, and Clover (featuring Huey Lewis), and also began his long and fruitful collaboration with Stephen 'Doc' Kupka and Emilio Castillo of Tower of Power. This netted him three songs on the Tower album "In The Slot," and two more on the next Tower album "Ain't Nothin' Stoppin Us Now". Frank also sang background vocals on both of these LP's. This highly-anticipated project holds special meaning for Stephen 'Doc' Kupka, who co-wrote many of the songs with Frank Biner and Emilio Castillo. Doc Kupka was also heavily involved in the original recording of the songs and co-produced the project with Frank. The songs were tracked during recording sessions at Kensington Sound Studios in 1982 in Toronto, Ontario with many great Canadian musicians and special guests, but were never released. These tracks are from the original sessions, with fresh new mixes, provided by Rick Duncan of Nacnud Studios and Steve Yelick of Coastside Recording, and mastering by Brian Hijos. Chuck Hansen served as Executive Producer for the project. THE LIFE AND TIMES OF FRANK BINER is a co-production of Strokeland Records and House of Hansen Productions, LLC. Since my health has changed drastically, my band had to change, too. No more heavy bass rig and no more kick drum. Having a bad reaction to vibrations make a huge difference in the sound. Fortunately for me - I have wonderful band mates who understand.
Ron Cook is brilliant on lead guitar, Brad Evans is nominated for The California Music Hall of Fame on his keyboard use, TJ Furtado has been playing bass in the Sacramento area for over 20 years and Zane Toberer on the cajon drum brings us all together. My vocals aren't what they used to be, many people say I sound better than ever! LOL Ron and I had a trip to Memphis in 2008 which started our friendship back in the day. Through the years I've performed with all of these gents and now I get to present them all together. They are fabulous and make me sound golden! I can remember this sound in my dad's country feeling LPs and his Zydeco songs. I hope you enjoy this music as much as we did making it!

 9. Still in Love - 6:03
10. Room with a View - 4:10
11. Blue Guitar - 5:29
12. Prophet for Profit - 3:34

It's been over ten years since Anderson put out an album featuring his vocals. He's a more melodic singer now, with a fluid soulful tone. Even Things Up is also a return to the blues-rock sound that he showcased on Working Class, his first solo effort. "Honky Tonk Girl" kicks things off with Anderson's big, twangy guitar perfectly straddling Chicago blues and California country swing. His punchy solo keeps the chooglin' beat rollin' down the road like an out of control semi. "That's How the Trouble Starts" has a smoky Latin backbeat and features backing vocals by Maxine Waters. On the ballad "Still in Love," Anderson shows off his power as a vocalist with his understated passion. The acoustic "Prophet for Profit" features Anderson's impressive blues harp work and a sarcastic lyric that takes those who preach for gold and not a soul to task for the damage they do. The instrumental tracks here are also tasty and show off Anderson's commanding guitar prowess. "Booker Twine" shows of his jazzy side with the big B-3 of Michael Murphy riding shotgun, "Wes' Side Blues" is a samba with Anderson's reverb-heavy guitar floating above the breezy tropical beat, while "Dogbone Shuffle" is another hard-charging honky tonk blues number goosed into high gear by Jeff Donovan's drums and the horn work of Lee Thronburg and Dave Woodford. [The album was re-released in an expanded Deluxe Edition in 2010 when Vizztone took over distribution of Anderson's Little Dog logo. Bonus tracks include a version of "Still in Love" with Bekka Bramlett singing lead, and live versions of the Anderson classics "Working Class" and "Feels Like Mississippi."]

It’s just amazing how skillfully singer-songwriter and guitarist Monte Montgomery shifts musical gears on his seventh studio album. On his self-titled 2008 Eminent Records CD, Montgomery does it all—from hard hitting blues rock to an illuminating pop-based approach that combines his soulful vocals and even more incredible acoustic guitar skills. Fitting his acoustic ax into the framework of a solid blues-pop groove, Montgomery also serves up a spellbinding, 10+ minute instrumental cover of the Jimi Hendrix favorite, “Little Wing,” with Montgomery wringing out every bluesy lick and lead out of his electrified acoustic guitar rig in the finest Hendrix spirit. He cites Buckingham and Knopfler as big guitar influences, yet Montgomery’s combination of solid fretboard work and soulful vocal approach also echoes the blue-eyed soul pop groove of Hall & Oates and Todd Rundgren with even an ‘80s Yes chaser thrown in for good measure. In the spirit of fellow Austin-ite Eric Johnson, Monte’s guitar work is truly something to behold, featuring red hot finger picking accented by well placed harmonics, speedy fretboard work and daring neck bends. All this is even more amazing when you realize he’s playing an acoustic guitar! Credit must also go out to Montgomery’s excellent backing unit featuring the solid rhythm section of David Piggott (bass) and Phil Bass (drums), who work up some solid musical ESP with the maestro. With his self-titled 2008 CD, Monte Montgomery breaks new ground in the rock guitar world.

Back Door Slam is the name of the blues rock band started by Davy Knowles on the Isle of Man in 2003–04. The band got its name from a Robert Cray song of the same name. Originally a four-piece, with Castle Rushen High School friends Jamie Armstrong (bass guitar), Ross Doyle (drums) and Brian Garvey (rhythm guitar), the band was torn apart in 2004 when Brian was killed in a car accident along with their close friend Richie Brookes. Deciding to carry on in Brian's memory, Davy, Jamie and Ross reformed the band, with Davy writing the emotional tribute to his friend & former bandmate, 'Stay', which was later to appear on a rare EP and on their debut album Roll Away. The trio recorded two EPs togethers, and played hundreds of gigs on their native Isle of Man before moving to London to live with Davy's manager, Bob Miller (Corinne Bailey Rae, Christine Collister). After a handful of gigs in the UK, Jamie decided to pursue a career in music production and left the band to go to University. In 2007, with a spot secured at the SXSW Festival in Texas, Davy and Ross recruited former schoolmate Adam Jones to replace Jamie on bass. Adam joined Back Door Slam for what turned out to be two extensive tours of the US lasting until January 2009.

Sublime blues guitar songstress, Clare Free, is back after seven years with a brand new album, “Where Are You Now?”, to be released on March 6th, 2020.Having taken a break from recording to raise her youngest child, “Where Are You Now?” is her first release since her acclaimed “Dust and Bones” album in 2012.And the production team behind the new release reads like a who’s who of the modern music industry, including Richard Flack, Bob Kidby & Frank Arkwright.
Clare explains: “I went for lunch at the Old Jet Arts hub which is run by Jesse Quin of Keane. While I was there, I met the massively acclaimed music producer Richard Flack. Richard is Robbie Williams’ producer, and he also works with other huge artists including Tina Turner, Olly Murs, Rudamental, the Spice Girls, Pulp, Stereophonics, INXS the list goes on and on. We got chatting and I mentioned to Richard that I wanted to record a new album. When I spoke to him a couple of weeks later, he said he would be interested in producing and mixing it as long as we worked well together, and he invited me into the studio to do a trial song to see how we got on.We went to the most amazing studio called The Barn, which is run by Bob Kidby who co-produced and engineered the album.  The studio is over two floors and is jam packed with an astonishing array of mint condition vintage gear. Every guitar, amp, effect pedal, and instrument you could dream of is there, and I was allowed to use any of them that I chose. I used vintage Telecasters, Stratocasters and Les Pauls mostly, and some much more ‘off the wall’ guitars too.  I was in heaven! The test track went well, and we all enjoyed working together, so Richard said, if I could fit in the recording in the days he had between flying back and forth to LA etc we could do it. I jumped at the chance and what an opportunity it was!  Working on the album with Richard was fantastic, and Bob’s engineering skills are second to none.  They got the absolute best out of me. I was lucky enough to have Jamie Kruppa join me on bass, I’ve worked with Jamie before and he’s a great bass player.  On drums we had Dave Jackson, who is a phenomenal session player.Once it was all mixed, I asked Cenzo Townshend (Engineer Of The Year - twice) if he would master the album, he told me he doesn’t do mastering, but that I should contact his mate Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road as he would do a good job of it for me. So, naturally, I contacted Frank, who masters for the likes of Coldplay, U2, Oasis, Snowpatrol, Bryan Ferry, Biffy Clyro and loads more. He did the mastering for me and wow, the album sounds absolutely amazing. I am so, so proud of it. I have had the opportunity of a lifetime, and I feel so lucky to have had that chance”. “Where Are You Now?” was recorded at The Barn Studios. Suffolk. The album was produced and mixed by Richard Flack, engineered and co-produced by Bob Kidby and mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios.

12. Dangerous Decision - 3:26

12 new songs from Jan James, the Soulful Blues Rock Singer Songwriter from Chicago in the U.S. Raised in central Michigan on a family-run fishing resort, Jan’s talent was obvious early on. ‘The more I played guitar and the more I tried out the voice I learned to use in the church choir,’ says Jan, ‘the more I liked it.’ And so… did everyone else. Jan met her partner, songwriter/guitarist Craig Calvert, while they were both attending Michigan State University. When she needed to replace her guitar player, the timing was right. They developed a musical chemistry that has evolved into a big sound and feel that is coloured with blues, soul and the raw dynamics of the best rock-n-roll. Moving to Chicago, the blues capital was good to them, and they to it.
They became favourites in such venues as Buddy Guy’s Blues Legends, Taste of Chicago and The House of Blues. They shared the stage with Koko Taylor, John Mayall, Little Feat, James Brown and B.B. King. They cut their first album, a powerhouse CD called ‘Last Train,’ picked up by the Dutch label Provogue. Jan launched a promotional tour of acoustic and electric performances aired on radio and television throughout The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Scandinavia; along with a feature on NBC’s television program, ‘Talking Blues’. More albums followed: ‘Soul Desire,’ ‘The Color Of Rose’ ‘Limousine Blues’, ‘Drive Me Home’, ‘Ring Around the Moon’, ‘Calling All Saints’ and now the latest ‘Justify’, a pure and commanding showcase of her talent from start to finish. Jan has performed at Chicago’s Royal George Theater in the starring role of Janis Joplin in a play based on Janis’ letters and songs. Along with the standing ovations, there was so much more. There was the aura of a major talent. We got to see not only the power of what Janis had left for us, but the power of what Jan James now does…and will do.

“Standing up or laying down, I won’t be here when the sun goes down,” says the 65 year old Southern Rock legend Harvey Dalton Arnold on ‘When the Sun Goes Down’ from his new release Stories to Live Up To out February 28th via Music Maker Recordings.
For the guitar cowboy who quit high school and left his home in rural Eastern North Carolina to hit the road playing rock and roll at 17, Stories to Live Up To is a retrospective album, examining the emotions and choices that have defined Arnold’s life. His decision to hit the road eventually led him to become the bassist and vocalist for the Southern Rock band the Outlaws during the peak of their fame. Arnold’s tenure with the Outlaws came at the peak of an American art form that spoke to a generation.  On his new record, his second released by Music Maker, Harvey doesn’t just look back, he wails through the everyday experiences that make an opera out of every man’s life - the perils and the joy of love, cheating, loss and longing. Accompanying Arnold in the studio is a crew of musicians with a righteous set of their own rock and roll bonafides..

WINNER of the 2002 JPF "BEST BLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR" award. Killer songs with soulful vocals, aggressive guitar and great dynamics. This is blues with a flair.."Blues is steeped in tradition, but there are new talents coming to the blues all the time, such a new talent is Mark Cook" Phoenix Blues Society. "Cook's versatility and maturity will surely garner him some big-time attention soon, as the blues world is always looking for someone of his depth and potential" Indie-Music. Mark is the recipient of the 'Just Plain Folks' BLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR - and has also been awarded sixth place in the BLUES SONG OF THE YEAR - for "All Your Lovin."  Much of Mark's earlier years as a child were spent on the road, touring around the country side of the United States and Canada in a musical up-bringing. Known as the "Dale and Vicki Duo", a popular jazz and blues act, Mark's mom alongside his stepfather performed nightly. This sort of musical gypsy lifestyle must have set the foundation for what would be a life long love for the blues style music. At the age of 15, Mark settled in Indiana and began crafting his skills as a serious musician. While his main emphasis was on guitar, he also taught himself to play bass and piano. He also began dabbling in 4-track demos, recording many of his earlier compositions. His love for writing and recording eventually led to building a professional recording studio in his house where he wrote, engineered, produced, and recorded his debut CD "An Evening With The Blues."  An accomplished and dynamic performer on guitar, Mark has performed and recorded in many bands over the years. Playing different genres of music such as: rock, jazz, and blues. In 1992, he was lead guitarist and songwriter in the rock band Silhouette. They recorded at the Bennett House in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Kenny Mimms (who also produced Jimi Jamison from the rock group Survivor). Mark has also done some television work and was featured in a TV commercial for the radio station WZZQ 107.5 in Indiana.
Mark's band, the Cook-N-Blues Experience, has played clubs in the midwest for the past year, entertaining standing room only crowds with the music of blues greats such as: Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, but also many of Mark's original music. As the band's slogan states "Blues With A Flair - Experience It - You Won't Believe Your Ears." For his debut CD "An Evening With The Blues" Mark wanted to capture the old style of blues from many different perspectives. As stated by Indie-Music, "The twelve song CD is rich in balance and heritage which makes this debut CD a sheer delight cut after cut." "An Evening With The Blues" has received great reviews by such publications as Blues Access, Blues Revue, and Vintage Guitar Magazine as well as many on-line blues publications.
Mark's second CD "The Promise Highway" (June 2002) has taken his writing to the next level. This new release is packed with killer songs, soulful vocals and aggressive guitar with great dynamics. THIS IS BLUES WITH A FLAIR. This CD will surely please all blues enthusiasts.
