Erick Hovey - Blues Farm

Size: 112,7 MB
Label: Self-Released
Styles: Blues/Roots/Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Ball and Chain - 5:48
 2. Know Who You Are - 3:56
 3. Soda Pop Girl - 3:51
 4. Patchouli - 3:16
 5. Runnin With a Full Moon - 4:15
 6. Fight That Monkey - 5:36
 7. Baby Come Home - 4:01
 8. Missing Part - 2:48
 9. I'm Through - 3:05
10. Talkin Bout Love - 3:35
11. Goin Down - 3:19
12. Can't Fall Down - 4:34

The opener on the Blues Farm CD, “Ball and Chain,” has a slow, moody, funky backdrop with some terrific understated guitar work. “Know Who You Are” is more upbeat, almost blues/rock with Hovey’s ragged but right guitar, and features some tasty harmonica from Andy Blumenthal and keyboards from Tom Gary. “Soda Pop Girl” is a gentle swinger about a girl who drives our protagonist around town while he drinks, and “Patchouli” is highlighted by Hovey’s stinging guitar fills.
Other highlights include the atmospheric “Runnin’ With A Full Moon,” the jazzy workout, “Fight That Monkey,” “Missing Part,” and the guitar-driven shuffle, “I’m Through.” Hovey’s a fine guitarist and his vocals are solid and suit the material well, and he gets excellent support from Blumenthal (harmonica), Gary (keys), Jeff Foreman (drums), Dan Lodden (bass), and Heather Kelly (vocals). This is a pretty solid set of Midwest blues that will please most blues fans.~ Graham Clarke / Blues Bytes / MS, USA

Johnson is a traditional electric bluesman (now living and working in the Atlanta area) who was heavily influenced by Jimmy Reed. The album includes covers of Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Slim, Howlin' Wolf, and Guitar Slim tunes. It's simple, driving, to the point, streamlined, no-frills blues. The latest Luther Johnson to add his name to the blues directory is an adept singer/guitarist who is a current favorite on the Atlanta blues scene. Proficient in various shadings of the electric blues idiom, Johnson has recently extended his repertoire from covers of blues standards to his own material, performed with the same '50s/'60s flavor.Johnson taught himself how to play guitar when he was a teenager in Atlanta by listening to records. Soon, he began playing guitar in pickup bands, which gave him the opportunity to support such touring musicians as Johnny Winter. After several years playing in bar bands, Johnson formed his own group, the Houserockers.Takin' a Bite Outta the Blues The Houserockers played bars and clubs around Georgia for several years, eventually landing a record contract with Ichiban in 1989. The next year Johnson released his debut album, Takin' A Bite Outta the Blues. Two years later, his second record, Houserockin' Daddy, appeared. Luther "Houserocker" Johnson continued to tour the U.S. throughout the '90s.

“Regarded as one of the finest guitarists of the modern rock scene, Alberto Piccolo aka Little Albert is known for his work in the revered Italian doom metal band Messa, who have garnered exceptional feedback on the global heavy scene and performed on major stages across Europe, the U.K. and North America. His new solo album The Road Not Taken deals with the concept of choice and is divided into a series of reflections on love gone wrong, regrets and mental health. The setting of The Road Not Taken story takes us to the Arizona desert, with Little Albert’s inspiring and deeply moving ’70s blues-rock as a soundtrack. Skillfully moving between timeless delta blues and jazz interwoven with flashes of brilliant heaviness, his immaculate technique recalls guitar heroes such as Muddy Waters and Joe Bonamassa, while his soulful crystalline vocals have the modern bite of The Black Keys or Gary Clark Jr. The Road Not Taken is a heartfelt and languorous seven-tracker that feels like nothing but a caress to the ears. With support from Alex Fernet on bass and Diego Dal Bon on drums, this new album also features a special cover of Louisiana bluesman Little Walter’s celebrated classic Blue and Lonesome. Fully recorded on analog tape, The Road Not Taken exudes both a vintage authenticity and an unwaveringly modern attitude — the result of a relentless reflection and deconstruction that makes Little Albert one the most outstanding newcomers of the Italian rock scene. The Road Not Taken was recorded, mixed and mastered by Matteo Bordin at Outside Inside Studio in Volpago del Montello, Italy. Produced and arranged by Piccolo, with lyrics by Piccolo and Sara Bianchin.”

John Primer & Bob Corritore - Crawlin' Kingsnake

11. Gravel Road - 3:41
12. Feel Like Going Home - 6:48

VizzTone Label Group announces the fourth collaboration album for John Primer and Bob Corritore, Crawlin’ Kingsnake. John and Bob have always had the Chicago spark. It was evident on their first release together in 2013, and on each release since. But this particular album feels like a new height has been achieved. There is a simultaneous, rocking forcefulness, while also exhibiting an uninhibited, gliding easiness. This  album also features arguably the best possible A-team for Chicago blues! With Bob Stroger on the bass, Jimi  Primetime Smith on second Guitar, Anthony Geraci on the piano, and Wes Starr on drums, this band sounds like the Muddy Waters band of decades ago.
Both Primer and Corritore appear at  the top of their game with Primer recently inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, as well as numerous award wins, and a Grammy nomination. Likewise, Corritore has been actively hitting the European festival circuit, released five critically acclaimed albums in  2023, was the subject of numerous articles and received numerous  nominations, and a number of wins. But all of that is secondary to  what happens in the studio and what you have in your hand is a  powerful straight-ahead album of sacred Chicago blues done by  two artists who have devoted their entire lives to the purity of the  blues.John Primer and Bob Corritore’s version of “Crawlin’ Kingsnake” breathes new life into this blues classic, reaching deep into the tradition while at the same time offers a vibrant fresh energy infusion while also providing a launching pad for great solos from John and Bob. But the true star of this song is John Primer’s Mississippi-drenched vocals.

The Kitchener, Ontario born and raised singer/songwriter and roaring guitarist is best known as a supporting player for soul/blues/funk acts such as Mel Brown, Bobby Rush, and the late Lucky Peterson, the latter of whom he spent eight years with on the road. All were mentors, helping Kellerman refine his skills as not just a guitarist, but a performer and songwriter. These roots veterans knew how to bash out a great time wherever they played, from the smallest Chitlin’ Circuit joint to larger auditoriums. Regardless of the makeup of the audience, no one left those gigs without a joyful grin plastered on their face.
Kellerman paid close attention and on this, his third full length and first in 15 years, he displays what he absorbed from these guys, and others, during his decades touring with them to 46 different countries. Kell’s Kitchen is set to release on March 29th.
He lays it out on the opening rollicking funk/blues as soulful background singers shimmy and shake, inviting us to “party with the SKB.” It’s not just the perfect way to kick off these studio delights, but likely his opening song for every concert going forward. That’s the blueprint for the rest of this hour-long, 14 track set, guaranteed to enliven any shindig.
From the P-Funk meets Johnny “Guitar” Watson bubbling groove of “Show Me What You Got,” to the horn powered jazz-fusion of “JIG JIGGERTY” and the frisky, rugged Chicago shuffle “Mac & Cheese” featuring soul shouter ZOOM (the two also recorded an entire album together), this is one helluva fun time. Add Kellerman’s sizzling leads and guest Jason Ricci’s award winning harmonica (on three songs), and strap in for a non-stop celebration you’ll want to share with anyone who will listen.
Old boss Bobby Rush, who knows about pitching some serious throw-down vibes, stops by to add vocals to the driving, appropriately titled “We Are Blues Men.” Here the duo trades verses and solos (Rush on harmonica) and seems to be having as much fun as they shared together on the road. Lucky Peterson also makes an appearance (on B3) for a rousing closing cover of Little Milton’s “Living Off the Love You Give.” But since he passed in 2020 (at just 55), it shows how long some of these songs have been in the can, waiting to be unleashed.
Regardless, now that they’re here let’s shake our tail-feathers to the pulsating Southern boogie of “In the World of Blues,” an appreciation of love and unity in the inclusive blues genre, enlivened by a searing Kellerman slide solo. When the vibe kicks into a rowdy slow tempo for “Together,” the temperature stays boiling with a Jeff Beck worthy lead. He rocks out on a sexed-up “Hard Man to Please” (“so you better roll up your sleeves”) as Ricci blows so hard and furious it sounds like his harmonica is bursting into flames, until the tempo abruptly shifts to acoustic Delta blues, then back again. The following “Bad Mamma Jamma,” is a solid chunk of tough funky blues that’ll rattle your pipes.
Kellerman isn’t going to win awards for his singing, which can generously be considered serviceable. Yet the unadulterated joy and enthusiasm that exudes from these songs (some feature others sharing the mic) overrides most vocal limitations.
It has taken a while to appear, but hopefully this is the start of a more consistent solo career for a veteran musician who cooks up a frothy concoction in his kitchen and wants you to share in the festivities.

Lightnin' Guy is the “hardest working performer” within the Belgian Blues & Roots scene. On August 30 & 31 he recorded his new album in the legendary 'Banana Peel Blues Club'. He received the cooperation of the renowned Guy Forsyth Band and expanded his Mighty Gators to an extra large line-up with top musicians from Belgium and the Senegelese soul singer Aminata Seydi. These 'Banana Peel' Sessions were bundled on a powerful CD. 13 live tracks perfectly reflect what an audience experiences during the intense shows of Lightnin' Guy & the Mighty Gators. This album also shows the evolution of Lightnin' Guy from a pure bluesman to an all-round songwriter. This CD immerses the listener in the wide range of American music styles and, as we would expect from Lightnin' Guy, the CD comes straight from the heart: a milestone and a new direction in a successful career.

Jean-Jacques Milteau - Key To The Highway

 8. Takin' It Back - 2:48
 9. What Does It Take (To Win Your Love) - 3:51
10. Angel From Montgomery - 3:58

While half a century separates this new album from his first recordings, Jean-Jacques Milteau wonders about the pranks of fate. On the innocent, almost innocuous choice of an instrument barely ten centimeters long which allowed him to visit all continents and have a series of improbable encounters, in the musical sphere as in his personal life. It is therefore not surprising that this collection sees him take a pensive look at this unpredictable journey. We will find here all the music that pushed him to improvise as a musician: the poetry of Bob Dylan, the blues which built his knowledge of the harmonica, the country which nourished his imagination, the soul which left him a legacy of harmonic inspirations. This eclecticism finds its unity in the proximity of the breath and the raw sounds of this recording. But don’t think that this record is an ode to nostalgia. It's quite the opposite. By favoring an original alchemy which combines the grace of the Wurlitzer, a founding bass and percussion, he offers us a timeless sound. Without forgetting the voices, with which he continues a passionate dialogue throughout a journey in which the harmonica is the key ~ Sebastian Danchin

TBelly - I Never Want to See Me Again

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2021
Time: 47:11
Size: 109,0 MB
Label: Self-Released
Styles: Rock/Blues Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Never Me Crawl - 4:58
 2. Tired of Listening Bone - 3:42
 3. If Only I Wasn't a Dog - 3:42
 4. Walk with Me - 3:40
 5. Freaky Boys and Freaky Girls - 3:48
 6. I Know You're Mine - 4:49
 7. I Guess I Must Say - 4:34
 8. I Never Want to See Me Again - 3:22
 9. Automatic Boy - 3:08
10. Lightning Tree - 4:30
11. Plastic Islands - 3:32
12. What Ya Gonna Do - 3:26

One of the hottest British bands at the moment is TBelly. This is actually a solo project by Russell Keefe (vocals, keyboards) from Brighton, which started in 2013 and released the debut album 'Dead Men Don't Pray' in 2015.
On the new album, Russell is assisted by Connor Baxter (guitar), Pip Mailing (drums), Jade Woodhouse (cello), Nicola Bates (violin), Live Steinberg (backing vocals), Ariella Steinberg (backing vocals), Mike Ross (slide guitar). ), Will Wilde (harmonica) and Dennis Dunaway (bass). You might know the latter as the original bassist from the band Alice Cooper.
He can be heard on the title track of the album and Alice Cooper herself is a big fan of this song. Not surprising since we are dealing with a dark, fuzzing, heavy rock song with nasty cutting guitar work.
TBelly's strength also lies in the singing of Russell Keefe. Here he sounds just as growling and bluesy as Joe Cocker. Such as, for example, in the gloomy pounding Never Me Crawl.
The energetic rocker Tired Of Listening Bone has a dirty Pretty Things sound. If you consider that Russell was once part of that band (also of Slade and The Bay City Rollers), this is not really remarkable. A dazzling song with Will Wilde's moaning harmonica and a flaming soul organ.
If Only I Wasn't A Dog surprisingly suddenly goes in the Steely Dan direction, but with Russell's growling blues vocals and powerful raw guitar riffs. The mid-tempo Walk With Me is a song of great Joe Cocker class. Tom Waits could also relate to this beautiful song.
The Steely Dan sound reappears in the heavy, dark and raw Freaky Boys And Freaky Girls. TBelly also has an intimate side as can be heard in the soulful ballad I Guess I Must Say and the bluesy ballad Lightning Tree. The strings play a moody leading role in the ballad Plastic Island.
TBelly says a heavy rocking farewell in What Ya Gonna Do, a grim pumping and pounding song.
The new TBelly album is versatile raw and above all very tasty!!(https://www.bluestownmusic.nl/recensie-tbelly-i-never-want-to-see-me-again/)

 7. Headin' for the Country - 4:31
 8. Bitta Man - 4:18
 9. South Austin Shuffle - 3:18
10. Back to Texas - 3:38

The legendary LIGHTNING RED has toured the world performing songs from his many recordings. In 2010 he played to an audience of nearly 10,000 in Switzerland, and his  release is attracting rave reviews, airplay and international touring. Recorded in Croatia and Germany, BLUES FAMILY features vocalist extraordinaire LZ Love, and is attracting favorable attention and performances throughout Europe.
Lightning Red began his R&B musical training early…at age three. Every Saturday night in 1952, while his parents danced, he’d sit directly in front of the saxophone sections of Count Basie, Jimmy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and many of the big bands touring the military base circuit. Marveling at him, iconic musicians would bring Red on stage between shows to noodle on their drums or bang on the piano. Then at age five he studied the piano, had an electric guitar by thirteen, and his band was winning talent contests within a few years time.Toward the end of his teens, Red became a protégé of Luther Allison in Chicago, where he soaked up the sounds of Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Mike Bloomfield, B.B. King, Johnny Winter and the local blues legends. Touring throughout North America followed, and in 1976 Austin, Texas became his home and touring base. While performing at the Armadillo World Headquarters during the latter 70s, Omar and the Howlers, W.C. Clark and "little" Charlie Sexton were brought onstage and introduced their music to the community. Red also soaked up the music of The Fabulous T-Birds (Jimmie Vaughan, Kim Wilson) at Antone's Club and met a struggling "Little" Stevie Ray Vaughan. His performances include the Whangarei Blues Festival in New Zealand, the Perth Blues Club in Australia, two years at the Great British R&B Festival, The Monterey Blues Festival, the Bayfront Blues Festival, many House of Blues dates in Cambridge, repeat performances at Chicago B.L.U.E.S. in New York, the Rapperswil Blues’n’Jazz Festival near Zurich, and Blues Alive! Cuijk in Holland. He has toured the US & UK repeatedly, as well as Scandinavia, Ireland, Australia, Canada, France, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Croatia and Denmark.

The Family Business - Balls Pricey

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2015
Time: 48:14
Size: 112,3 MB
Label:Self-Released
Styles: Rock/Blues/Blues Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. The Problem - 4:50
 2. Make My Move - 3:35
 3. You Never Know - 2:42
 4. The Stones - 4:03
 5. The Music - 3:01
 6. Blue - 3:21
 7. Still Alive - 3:45
 8. Monster - 3:47
 9. Watching You - 4:43
10. Wang - 3:20
11. The Big Red Button - 3:35
12. The Wolf - 4:17
13. Double Suite - 3:08

Balls Pricey is the fourth release from the Madison Wisconsin neo-classic rockers, The Family Business. Over the years the boys have explored different genres from straight up heavy blues riffs on their debut Nightmares and Wildest Dreams, to the more Americana, Band-esque sound from the their last record Forefathers. On Balls Pricey  we find T.F.B. cranking out a mix of straight up rock and roll as well as exploring a few other related genres. Balls Pricey opens with the hard rocking “The Problem.” The band quickly shifts gears with the R&B grooving “Make My Move” followed by the boogie rock of “You Never Know.”  The entire record is a mini catalog of various feels and grooves and types of songs in the blues rock idiom.  One of my favorites is the 6/8,  psychedelic,  Allman Brothers tinged “Blue.”  This is definitely one of the album highlights. The guys seem to be stretching their muscles a bit and they do quite well no matter what style they put their hands to.  Ambient production, rock and roll attitude, and their love of the blues keeps the record from sounding too eclectic. There is a definite sonic thread that The Familiy Business weaves through out the entire album. While it’s obvious that they can play anything that they want and still sound authentic, great rock and roll is still what they do best. Tracks like” Double Suite,” “Still Alive,” and “Big Red Button” is where they seem most at home.Singer and guitarist Alex White is a natural blues rock singer with enough bite to convince the even toughest “rock is dead” critic. Lead guitarist Eric Ziegler’s tasteful solos create a powerful double guitar attack with White. T.F.B. meld rock and blues effortlessly. Both White and Ziegler benefit from the formidable rhythm section of Garrett Wartenweiler and Derek Hendrickson who keep Balls Pricey rocking hard from start to finish.Ball Pricey, no matter what genre The Family Business is working with, has a very live feel.  It’s well produced but not slick. The guitars are warm and fat. The drums are loud and the vocals are ruff and soulful. This is the way that great rock and roll and great blues should always sound.

Info says that London is the beginning and end of all stories. Tony started his career in Croatia, sold all his furniture to the horror of his own mother in order to start recording his first album at Smolec in Zelengaj, and then headed to London where he completed it by changing several studios. His blues talent was first recognized by the late Boško Petrović, who helped him release his first album " All Alone " (Jazzette Records, 2000), soon followed by " Live in Maremis " (Memphis Records Zagreb, 2002), and then the second studio album " Anytime Is The Right Time " (Aquarius Records, 2004). He continued his recording career only 15 years later with the comeback " Redemption"/

At the age of ten he was given his first guitar – an early model Fender Stratocaster direct from the factory, handed over by Leo Fender himself – which he kept all his life. Throughout his teens he soaked up the new music of the 60s: Hendrix, Coltrane, Zappa, Cream and all; and at the age of twenty he formed his own blues band and opened shows for Robben Ford, Little Feat, John Mayall and Yellowjackets, amongst others, before getting into some serious dues-paying as a member of Ike Turner’s band. He went on to establish himself on the LA session scene, playing with such diverse artists as Thelma Houston, Kenny Loggins and Dizzy Gillespie, while as a member of keyboardist David Garfield’s acclaimed Karizma band he played alongside such luminaries as bassist John Patittucci and drummer Greg Bissonette.

This second album is the logical confirmation of an unusual band, which discovers their potential through innovative elegance and the loyalty they give to the blues they perform from diverse and vigorous starting points. These musicians are committed to the fundamentals but go one step further without complexes, achieving an original and modern creative result. PREVIOUS ALBUM. 2019. "They like to say that this whole thing was a bad idea, because the blues is the first music you try to play when you pick up a guitar, but it's the last one you really learn to play, and sometimes one isn't enough life/
This new work by I SHOT A MAN delves into the heart of the blues, embracing its African roots, sinking into the Mississippi Delta, swallowing its modern offspring. With intense lyrics delving into the burdens of our era's demons, grappling with the challenge of existence in this world and a spirituality reaching out to a distant god, each track serves as a portrait, a character, an invocation. From fiery riffs to haunting melodies, "DUES" seeks dissatisfaction and perpetual motion, seduced by memories while surrendering to melancholy, always returning to the raw, potent essence of the blues.

In this article we discuss the recording debut of the Big Man James Trio from Lodi. Giacomo Cassoni (vocals, harmonica and guitar), Federica Rossi (drums) and Michele Zanoni (bass) started playing together just under a year ago and, found immediately the right feeling, they have already given birth to their first album: ANOTHER.The album opens with LOVE IS NOT ALL, a song with a lithe rhythm with a guitar that looks towards the sounds of the Marcus King - John Scofield duo and the rhythm section that sweeps away the blues with confidence. Reckless and enthusiastic, the guitar runs with arms wide open towards that last opportunity and seizes it by pirouetting happily under the moonlight of the second piece.MOONLIGHT is a furious knight who gallops at full rein with his six-stringed lance pointed towards lands of groove & freedom. The result is a scalped rock'n'shuffle that excitedly flaunts all the beauty of playing, having fun and enjoying life. A wild piece that slides along the lines of an incendiary Doorsian-style Roadhouse Blues and that sprints once again in the direction of love, not only towards that for a person, but also and above all towards that for the most faithful music.ANOTHER, the piece that gives the album its title, lowers the pace a little and dyes the melodies blue with an elegiac harmonica at the opening. A catchy and insinuating chorus and refrain that get stuck in your head and swirl along with the amusing jumble of events, objects and feelings mentioned in the lyrics. Another song, another stage, another story and the circle closes and the circle of life begins again and again.SATISFACTION is a song with serene and jovial tones in which satisfaction walks alongside the protagonist in the devil style of Johnsonian memory. However, at a certain point the satisfaction moves away and goes for a walk about his business, but luckily there is always another possibility: the important thing is to always smile so the happiness lasts all day. A festive and prankster piece who takes everything as it happens, strictly with a smile on his face.
Satisfaction guaranteed! It continues with percussion and a circular and fiery bass line for a FUNKY TRIP of pure funk'n'groove. The bass reigns supreme and the guitar unrolls a red carpet of full-bodied and succulent notes under it. A full-blown trip in the colors of George Clinton with the addition of a chorus and a guitar turn that immediately makes 80s dancefloor pop.And after this trip to Funkytown, we move towards the end of the album with the piece entitled WITHOUT YOU. The song has a short guitar riff that recalls Social Distortion's edgier Bakersfield, but seasoned in Hendrix's atmospheric sauce. A sweet text here clashes with a sharp and vibrant guitar, giving life to a piece that takes flight in the central part until it finally levitates with the solo. Cassoni's intense vocality emerges forcefully and here ranges from an almost whispered sweetness to a heartbreaking and shouted desperation. A song that immediately captivates the listener and gains depth listen after listen. Then it's MY CLOUDS which gave the title to Giacomo Cassoni's first solo work. A piece that here rides a country folk pace with harmonious choruses, tasty bass steps and carefree drum trots. The last song we come across in Another is LITTLE CURLY. A song that starts off straight away, with Zanoni and Rossi rhythmically playing soft but square at the same time under a guitar lick with lounge pop contours. So far it appears perhaps as the least consistent piece of the entire work, but this impression reigns only until the sprint of the distorted six strings is triggered which gives the final incisive scratch.BIG MAN JAMES TRIO's debut album is undoubtedly a quality work that flies over the barren prairies of blues, flirts with the lush forests of funk'n'groove and relaxes on the concrete highways of rock. Eight songs born from massive listening to sacred monsters such as Derek Trucks and Jimi Hendrix, sprouted from the touch of the very young Marcus King and moved to the rhythms of John Scofield and Jon Cleary.
Cassoni, Rossi and Zanoni have discovered the perfect formula to create a groove prism with sparkling rock, pop, funk and blues facets.

As lead singer of the Night Shadows, Little Phil had a hit tune in his early teens that spawned an international fan club. If his label had not switched back to Country music at the behest of their corporate parent, his single "So Much" would certainly have gone national since it had reached top twenty radio status in several states. Nevertheless, this tune and others he released on indie labels have made Little Phil and his old band cult favorites among garage rock aficionados and devotees. ... This CD features ten tunes that Little Phil recorded since the demise of his legendary band. They may not sound like the garage psych-rock of the Night Shadows, but each track still remains true to Little Phil's unique soul-rock style of singing.

New Yorkers have been musically spoiled in that having the likes of Felix Cabrera and Jimmy Vivino gigging around in various band configurations was like Blues manna from heaven. But several months ago all of that changed when Conan O'Brien moved west taking not one but two Vivinos (Jimmy & Jerry) plus the extraordinary bassist Mike Merritt away from our scene. I've seen the core version of this band many times over the years, and even though there was a studio recording (The Black Italians), none of those great nights was ever (legally) captured and released. Until now, and while the New York City Blues scene has tapered down (no more Manny's Car Wash, Chicago Blues, and countless others), thank goodness for the tiny and wonderful Turning Point CafŽ in nearby Piermont, NY, which is where this wonderful recording was captured. First and foremost, no egos here, as Cabera and Vivino alternate leadership with ease; the opening "I Didn't Know" vocals are by Vivino, and from the opening notes you know its going to be a great night as the band is coagulated and firing smoothly. Cabrera's immediately on fire and, like a sly cat, Vivino lays low, but not for long as this tune simmers to a sumptuous boil with great guitar riffs, excellent B-3 from Eddy Bishal's Hammond, all held done smartly by bassist Phil Butler and Bill Shroeder's drumming. Next up its Cabrera's turn with his wild "Animalism." Check out Vivino's churning guitar work and Felix's over-the-top vocal chops. Cabrera continues in the spotlight with Paul Butterfield's "Lovin' Cup" slickly rearranged with a dynamite B-3 groove, Vivino's non-stop Bloomfield impersonations that similarly explode into a marvelous blending of his own signature guitar, and Cabrera's intuitive harp. There's more pedal to metal on "Kid at Heart" which is a driving shuffle where bassist Butler struts his stuff, and Cabrera ignites the entire enchilada. The open chords of Rice Miller's (Sonny Boy Williamson II) "Scared of That Child" sounded familiar, and while Vivino says, "It ain't 'Courageous Cat,'" it's similar," no matter. This is one hip tune, Vivino's vocal is dead on, the band is tighter than Paris Hilton's jeans, Cabrera is in the harp pocket, and Jimmy's solo is just so tasty.Eddie Harris' instrumental gem "Listen Here" is killer and a workout for the entire band that stylishly weighs in at a little more than ten minutes, yet no one plays on excessively. First up is Bishal's B-3 that burns. Felix then with cat like instincts jumps in, and it's apparent this tune's going to roar, and roar it does as Vivino tries to join the fray gently. But that doesn't last, and off to the races they go!From Vivino's recording Do What, Now? "Birds Nest On The Ground" is a funky delight with another powerful guitar workout for Jimmy. Note Vivino calling out to the band to "pick it up" as this tune finishes in a high-speed flurry. From Felix's For Green recording, comes "Self Argument in D Minor" where, other than Cabrera's spirited harp attack, comparatively things calm down. Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" allows Cabrera and Vivino to somewhat share vocal duties that lumber along for more than seven minutes (sometimes in Spanish, by Cabrera of course) and eventually segues into Ray Charles and James Burke Oden's "Going Down Slow" vocalized by Vivino. This excellent disc closes on this classic Blues tune that starts slowly but soon is propelled by a searing guitar solo. The boys say goodnight to the crowd, and you know a great time was had by all.I was fortunate to have seen this exact same band twice this year, both times at the Turning Point, and look forward to more Cabrera/Vivino performances, but with Jimmy's new west coast digs, it won't happen as often. But I just checked www.FelixCabrera.com, and Felix is doing a gig with Vivino in California, so I guess it's just a matter of time as to when Jimmy visits the east coast and returns the favor. In summary, these guys belong together, their chemistry is magical, and their musical respect is obvious and mutual. Let's just hope that the next time(s) they unite they bring along the recorder so that we can have more of this very contagious and spontaneous music. Until that time, enjoy Live At the Turning Point. It's really a special capture of two consummate Blues pros leading an excellent band.
