Chances are you've never heard of Alvin Jett & The Phat noiZ Blues Band from East St. Louis. That's why it's good to get reacquainted with the reissue of their 2008 'How Long' album.
This shows that this was/is a band that mixed its blues with a lot of soul and funk with a very pleasant result. The band was a finalist at the International Blues Challenge in 2006. At the time of this album, the band consisted of Alvin Jett (vocals, guitar), Matt Davis (bass, vocals), Corey “Woody” Woodruff (drums) and Frank Bauer (saxophone). , vocals, ex-Jeremiah Johnson Band), on the album supplemented by Jeremy West (drums), Arthur “Mississippi” Wiliams (harmonica), who recorded with Boo Boo Davis and Sam Carr, Marcus Steinmann (keyboards) and Rich McDonough (slide guitar, ex-Soulard Blues Band). It opens with the energetic rocking shuffle Boogie To The Blues. A festive opener in which the band sounds like a rawer version of Big Twist & the Mellow Fellows with the lived-in blues vocals and piercing guitar of Alvin Jett. After that, Ain't Been The Same is a big pumping boogie with the moaning harmonica of Arthur "Mississippi" Wiliams. The sensitive side of the band is discussed in the intimate slow blues Angels Sing The Blues with soulful vocals and powerful moaning guitar work and the equally intimate My Baby's Place. The band is most convincing on the second half of the album. Bluesman is a slow soulful grooving song with warm horns and a boisterous swinging ending. China Doll is also a soulful blues song complete with a lady panting towards a climax... Then Borrowed Time is a fiercely funky song with biting guitar playing, followed by the equally funky and instrumental 7-47 Central Time. In Milk And Cookies the band moves towards the sound of Tower Of Power, but in a bluesy way. After the cheerfully sparkling Best Friend You Got, with swinging zydeco influences, the album ends with the sultry swamp boogie Down In The Delta.
For many, including me, this is a very pleasant new acquaintance with Alvin Jett & the Phat noiZ Blues Band!

All artwork for the album as well as its singles were hand-drawn by Ebba also.Erik Petersson, who previously worked with bands such as Siena Root and Heavy Feather, mixed the album in No Regrets Fonogram Studio, and Fredrik Stålne mastered it. Four Wings will be released by The Sign Records on turquoise vinyl with gatefold cover. Ebba Bergkvist & The Flat Tire Band say about their new album:
It all began when, in the state between wakefulness and sleep, I saw a white seagull with four wings flying over a beautiful valley. I woke up, wrote down what I had seen, and began formulating what would become the concept of this album. “If I were a bird, I wouldn’t have two wings, I would have four” – it represents an arrogance, an unreasonable ambition. That’s how the album begins, to then bring you back down to earth, present the downsides, and ultimately let you accept your fate. After three years of reformulations, restructuring, and arrangement difficulties, our second album is finally ready for the world, and we are incredibly proud!

Appeared in the movie, Now or Never (2012), which dealt with bigotry against gays in the 70s. Also starred in the television show, Time Can't Wait (1998), which addressed racial prejudice in the 60s.
Lives in Venice, California. Father, with Karen Landry, of Amelia Mulkey & Elizabeth Mulkey. Appeared in the music video Supertramp: Brother Where You Bound (1985) with his wife, Karen Landry. The video, in which Mulkey plays a renegade defense technician, was controversial due to its (then) perceived graphic depiction of violence. Coincidentally, it was the longest song Supertramp ever recorded clocking in at 16 and a half minutes. Is naturally left-handed, but plays the guitar with his right hand. Has recorded eight albums as Chris Mulkey, Chris Mulkey and Deluxe, and Vic Mulkey and The Blue Veins.
In 1974, Chris was co-writer and actor of an unfinished film titled "Ride the Rough Country" which starred Aldo Ray. One of the other actors in it was L.Q. Jones.

hooyoosay - At the End of the Day

12. Painkiller, Kill the Pain - 3:19
13. Tormented Soul (Acoustic Version) - 3:13
14. Then You Walked Away - 2:29

The coming into existence of hooyoosay actually is a coincidence.
Somewhere in a recording studio, some session players were waiting for the artist who had hired them.
When the artist messaged them he would be much later than planned, they started playing some cover songs to while away the time.
The studio engineer pressed 'record', and when eventually they found these recordings too good to be wasted, they later on finalized them and released them on the album "In dekay", under the name hooyoosay.
As some of the players had their reasons for remaining anonymous, they simply decided that none of them would be credited.
Next, the idea emerged to turn hooyoosay into a continued project of releasing recordings by anonymous contributors, which undoubtedly is quite a unique concept.
Their latest release is "At the end of the day", an album offering blues, pop, rock, singer-songwriter and Americana, in a number of cover songs as well as self-penned material.
The album opens with "It's not easy", a cover song, which hooyoosay have turned into a soulful rocker, the female vocalist definitely stealing the show.
It is remarkable how hooyoosay have made the cover songs their own.
The oustanding illustration of this, is their rendition of "Please go home". This Rolling Stones original has gone through the incredible metamorphosis from a Bo Diddley inspired rock song to a delicate folky singer-songwriter acoustic ballad.
Neither has Chuck Berry's "Come on" been carbon copied, but on the contrary been turned into a creative fun piece full of personality.
The cover version that stays closest to its original probably is "Let's spend the night together", the song's message however brought in a more seductive and inviting way than it is in the rather screaming Stones original.
As for the self-written songs, "Tormented soul" appears on the album in two different versions, electric and acoustic. It's hard to decide which one is to be preferred. The song's fundamental 'what now?' cry is projected with a sense of aggressive frustration in the electric version, in the acoustic version however with more melancholy and resignation.
Classic blues with "I am the beggar" and "Good times bad times", the former a hooyoosay original, displaying quite witty lyrics, the latter a cover song. Excellent performances, the harmonica absolutely shines.
The lyricism in "If no one" surely deserves attention. The dancing in the streets vibe of this funky tune might distract you from noticing the insightful tyrics, tackling all the challenges of society and the world, asking the right questions and urging for solutions.
Halfway through the album, "Olla Doo" is a killer instrumental from start to finish. A bluesy jam, showing off confidence and skill.
Energetic 80's-90's reminiscent pop-rock is being served with "All I do is call your name" and "Painkiller, kill the pain". Solid and grooving rhythms, great melodies and harmonies, impeccable vocals and enticing arrangements.
"Then you walked away" closes the album. It is amazing how hooyoosay succeed in evoking the 'so, that was it' feeling implied by the title without the use of any lyrics, by a purely instrumental track, involving merely acoustic drums and percussion and a synth bassline.
To the enthusiasts of the blues-pop-rock spirit and sound of the past decades, "At the end of the day" by hooyoosay will certainly be strongly appealing.

After many years as a sideman to singers like Betty Everett, Donny Hathaway, Gene "Duke of Earl" Chandler, Brook Benton, and many other prominent classic R&B singers, guitarist and singer/songwriter D.C. Bellamy released his debut album for the Rooster Blues label, Water to Wine, with America's Most Wanted, in the fall of 2000. Gregory "D.C." Bellamy was born on Chicago's West Side in March 1949. He grew up in a household surrounded by musical talent, as his half brother was the late Curtis Mayfield, who would often hold rehearsals for his group, the Impressions, in the family's living room. Bellamy's grandmother purchased a piano for the family to use, and the children were all encouraged to play it. At age nine, Bellamy got his first guitar as a Christmas gift, and he began playing by ear and singing and playing along with Elvis Presley recordings. Even though he was raised in Chicago, a home for the blues, Bellamy was fascinated with rock & roll as he watched firsthand the success of Mayfield's group. But growing up on the West Side, it was hard to ignore the great abundance of blues talent in his own neighborhood, so by the time he was 14 or 15, everyone knew Bellamy was on his way to making a name for himself as a guitarist. Bellamy's mother, impressed by his earliest efforts at writing his own songs, took measures to ensure that he found people to help copyright his songs and put them into commercial format.
When he was 17, he followed the rising popularity of the Impressions, Jerry Butler, Lou Rawls, and other great vocalists. He was introduced to singer Betty Everett, whose career was clearly on the rise. After hearing a short demonstration of his guitar-playing skills, Everett hired Bellamy for her tour, which developed into a ten-year tenure accompanying Everett on her tours around the world. During times back home, Bellamy freelanced, accompanying the likes of Donny Hathaway, Gene Chandler, Brook Benton, and others. Also back home, Bellamy began working with guitarist and singer Jimmy Reed, and the endless songwriting and guitar-playing possibilities of the art form began to blossom in his mind. His band became the house band at a Chicago club, Beale Street, after singer Bobby Rush left a long residency there. Bellamy's various bands worked Beale Street for eight years, and he had a chance to play with everyone in Chicago or passing through Chicago at that time, including Artie "Blues Boy" White, Otis Clay, Cicero Blake, Lefty Dizz, and Z.Z. Hill. During this period, he was constantly writing more of his own songs and working on developing his own distinctive vocal and guitar style. In early 2000, Bellamy returned to the recording studio to record an album under his own name for the then newly relaunched Rooster Blues label. Water to Wine was recorded at Blue Heaven Studios in Salina, KS, not far from his new home base of Kansas City, KS. During this time, Bellamy held a residency at the Kansas City venue Club Paradox. Bellamy is accompanied on Water to Wine, a fine collection of Chicago-styled originals, by drummer James "Spoon" Wilson, keyboardists Harrison Irons and Ray Hopper, lead guitarist Jimmy D. Lane, bassists Louis Villeri and Ben Shult, and harmonica player Dan "Juice" Hettinger. The results are stellar, a fine collection of original songs that don't sound like anyone else you've ever heard in modern blues. Songs like "Water to Wine," "Next Door Neighbor's Woman," and "I Won't Be Around You" are written in a style that is influenced by his famous half brother, Curtis Mayfield. But on Water to Wine, Bellamy and his band also serve up inspiring cover versions of Peter Chatman's "If You See Kay" and John Lee Hooker's "Dimples." ~ Richard Skelly

Guy Bergeron/Blackstone, Massachusetts:

"This collection of songs is the very best stuff off of my two projects "Hip Replacement" and "50 Mission Crush" as well as some new tunes from my workshop in Blackstone MA recorded from 2013 to 2016. This CD opens with a raucous original ditty called “That Wasn’t Part Of The Plan”, which features a kazoo backup line, I tried it with guitars but the kazoo worked better, and what the heck Jimi did it (Cross Town Traffic) so I figured I’d give it a shot. There’s a country fried version of “Sweet Jane” (Think more Cracker than Cowboy Junkies) on here that I’m quite happy with, and should provide a chuckle or two, as well as make you want to drive fast and question authority. I deconstructed an old Stevie Wonder song on here as well, and “You Havn’t Done Nothin” isnt a typical garage band tune but gosh darn it, the thing works and the funk bleeds through the buzz saw guitars just fine to my ears. The project ends with an oddball instrumental, an experiment in creating sax lines with guitars on an old timey swingin tune called “What It Is What It Aint”. In a perfect world where I had a trust fund, I'd tour with a band that had a sound somewhere between the Black Crowes, Joe Walsh, Flaming Lips and Warren Zevon. That's what I aim for in the studio and I believe with this project I've come as close as I can on my own".

It's been a long road creating Three Floors UP.  We've recorded, mixed, mastered, and produced this album at home and it came out great!  Who says you can't do it yourself?  If you're not afraid to work hard at it, you can!  And we are super proud of this album! 13 new original songs.  We started making this album just before the pandemic and dedicated ourselves utterly to it's creation over the last three years.  Recording it ourselves allowed us to take all the time needed to craft it just exactly as we wanted it.  No studio charges,  No compromises.  Sure, it's been a journey, but we each feel very proud of what we've done both as individuals and also as a band.  And as serious musicians, that's everything you hope for.  We hope you like it as much as we do!

"My music is varied, spanning many years and many different places in my life. Thank the Lord I made it through those places. "Baby! Baby!" I wrote this about my son and visitation with him during a pretty bad divorce "The Crispee Creem Song" I wrote on the way home from work and a doughnut truck passed by me. Ha! "The Devil is a Woman" was after a breakup and originally recorded on a 4 track at home. I entered it in the Blues Deluxe radio contest and it placed in the top 20 of a nationwide contest. "Don't Make No Difference to Me" another "getting over a relationship" song. "Goin' Rebel" was written after quitting a job. "Mess of Blues" was my first blues song and was later spotlighted on Blues Deluxe. "The Task" was written after a band breakup. "To Be A Simple Man" is about the day in and day out of things. "With You" a serious reconciliation song. I've always believed and have tried to keep my songs "simple, but effective". Hopefully, I've demonstrated that on "To Be A Simple Man". I hope you enjoy".

Col Ray Price is a student of the blues. That fertile Mississippi water is running through his veins, a man who is more interested in that compelling roots sound of Robert Johnson and Leadbelly rather than Brittany Spears. The sound that gave birth to Rock’n’Roll and Country and he’s authentic! Slide guitars and a raspy voice that Howlin’ Wolf would be proud of. A timber worker by day and a bluesman by night. In the words of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, “he’s just a white boy lost in the blues”. This is the real deal, not repackaged for mass consumption. Col Ray Price plays a hard driving infectious rhythm and sings in the style of the old time blues shouters and hollers of the American south lands that gave birth to the likes of Big Joe Turner and Son House and latter to the likes of R.L. Burnside and Robert Belfour. From “House Rock’n Blues” to “Mississippi Hill Country Blues” its pure roots music in what is now labeled as the “Fat Possum” (Mississippi) sound.

Leader/harmonica man/singer/writer Billy Blue Strauss has done a fair job of both playing and projecting an image to make checking out his album, Blues In My Room, worthwhile. On the minus side, his musical fare and ensemble backing is very much the same polished retro Chicago or west-coast electric style many are overplaying today. On the plus side, his harp chops stand out on the high side of the frequency spectrum, proving a good player’s personality can be communicated through his instrument. His vocals too are quite good, similar to his playing or vice versa. The cover photo shows him posed seriously, as if warming up a moment before performance (petting his late dog, Wolfie, to whom the album is dedicated). There are gobs of gig posters on the wall and portraits of harmonica heroes. He appears a rather tortured soul, confirmed on the back cover photo by an assortment of accessories, musical and otherwise, collected for his room.

Once a hotbed for new rock, Australia has been fairly quiet on the FM radio front for quite a while now. Aside from Gotye and his indie-pop peers, nothing much from the land down under has gripped the American mainstream, which is quite unfortunate considering how groups like INXS, Midnight Oil, and Crowded House were such commercial heavyweights stateside a few decades ago. Stormcellar have the hooks and red meat to pillage Yankee waters if given the opportunity. On their latest album, Hired Guns & Borrowed Glory, Stormcellar knit together their country and blues influences for a distinctly classic-rock flavor. At times the band sounds like James Taylor fronting the Rolling Stones; that is, if Taylor had a bigger set of balls and the Stones scratched off the AOR polish they were painted with since the late ‘70s. “Same Old Blues” is ironic because it’s a lot less traditional than its title implies; then again, its meaning describes more of an emotional state than a musical style. Slamming drums and big, chunky riffs power the track with bar-band oomph.Speaking of the Stones, “Suit Yourself” is awash with Keith Richards-fueled riffage; it kicks like a stubborn mule. Stormcellar are equally effective in their relatively mellow efforts as well such as on “Light in the Distance.” Enveloped in layers of atmosphere, there’s a sense of isolation in the song and a feeling of impending doom with just a smoking guitar solo offering any relief. Lyrically speaking, “Hard Times” provides the group’s punchiest two-fisted moment, a political diatribe that sings a working man’s blues with swampy rhythms and a bad-ass harmonica.
Hired Guns & Borrowed Glory spans the styles they’re now starting to call ‘Ozicana’ -it’s almost but not quite blues, almost but not quite country, almost but not quite folk. Hired Guns pinches shamelessly from all the styles we love, with songs that we’d been playing live for a year before the recording (eg: same old blues) and some that were made up on the spot (eg:hard times).

Sean Webster - Summer Has Gone

Tracks Listing:
 1. Forever Gone Away - 4:33
 2. Won't Lay Down - 3:40
 3. Can't Be Alone - 4:38
 4. Lost And Alone - 4:28
 5. Make It Through - 3:11
 6. Never Let Go - 4:50
 7. Not Me And You - 5:10
 8. Summer Has Gone - 5:15
 9. What You Get - 2:55

A young Sean Webster's life dramatically changed when a friend introduced him to the likes of the music by the blues greats. The three Kings, Albert, BB, and Freddy, as well Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Gary Moore and the primary reason for Sean playing the guitar, the legendary Eric Clapton. Sean's passion for guitar and his dedication to music since has continued to grow to an almost fevered obsession. That thirst for music has led to the creation of six studio albums and taken Webster on a touring life across America and Europe taking in many of the Blues-Rock scenes leading venues and festivals. Webster's instantly recognisable voice coupled with his heartfelt melodic guitar playing has become the feature on all his album releases. Both Webster's blues-inflected guitar licks and weathered soul shouter vocals are always passionately sung across tightly arranged songs. Music News had this to say about Webster's talents.
"I haven't heard anyone with a voice like Sean Webster; it's a wonder that he isn't being hailed as a Blues superstar." Webster has never been one for following the latest trend, never bowing to blues purism standards. His heart is worn firmly on his sleeve, personal trials released in the form of song that creates his connection with his audience. A strong blues vein runs through Webster's original music, done so without sacrificing the need to retain a modern approach and sound. Thus creating such a likeable and listenable performer, deserved of repeat listens.
The British singer, guitarist and songwriter's trademarks are his unmistakably intense, soul-influenced voice, his soulful, melodic guitar playing and his excellent songwriting. On Summer Has Gone, Sean Webster shows more of his quieter and more thoughtful side with first-class ballads - with his grandiose, soulful voice and his flair for unusual guitar licks. A convincing album with perfectly realized, mature and catchy songs.

Much of the guitar work is reminiscent of rock-blues artists, such as Jeff Healey, Robben Ford, and Gary Moore. Opening with the title song "No Use For the Blues" exploring the value of success and happiness, the CD takes you on an aristotelian journey from relationships and attraction, "Voodoo Angel", to social acceptance, "Killer Bees", and beyond. Take a trip on this CD through the highs and lows and see if you agree that life is what you make of it - "Happiness depends upon ourselves" - Aristotle.

What he played, reminds of the young Eric Clapton, when he was with John Mayall, 1970 german newspaper DIE WELT wrote about the 20 years old guitar player , Rainer Baumann. Then the guy made a splash with his introduction to FRUMPY, still one of the most important German bands ever. Now the doors stood wide open for the young guitar genius . International stars such as Champion Jack Dupree invited him into the studio, as well as german greats like Achim Reichel, Randy Pie and Jutta Weinhold. But his secret love was the blues - so in the late seventies he founded the RAINER BAUMANN BAND. Already in 1980 the band recorded the album Meet Me in the Bottom for Line Records in Hamburg, bursting with enthusiasm and ingenuity. (2002 Records re-released on CD by Sireena Records). As an opening act for Roger Chapman on his Germany tour in 1981 Rainer Baumann left such a good impression that Chappo entered the microphone while the recording seesions on the third album Adoring Jimmy Reed (Line Records). This album was Baumanns tribute to his great blues heroes like Albert King and Muddy Waters. Fooling Around was the last album by Rainer Baumann for Line Records, it was released in 1983 . Bluesrock, in a groovy way that sometimes reminds of the westcoast sound.Since 1982, Rainer Baumann, until his sudden death in 2007 had worked as a teacher in guitar, harmony and composition.

New School innovative rockin' blues and blue wave. Was originally a demo CD for band and guitarista promo/ Real Name: Randall W. Noom. Texan-turned-Grand Rapidian who plays slow-cookin' blues guitar. Became JACOB CLYDE, using his dad's first and middle names, giving him a more blues name. Although I honor, respect and love the blues artists and the traditions of the past I am into doing a new blues thing. If Slim Harpo, Albert King or Robert Johnson were slill alive today they would still be writing and performing new material,' says Clyde. In '02, he also toured with "Thunder Knocking On The Door". The critically acclaimed "Bluesical" featuring the music of Keb Mo and toured w/ Broadway Musical "It Ain't Nothing But The Blues" in 2000. Whether working with a quartet, leading a 7 piece horn band like Big Chief or backing such accomplished musicians as Art Neville of the Neville Brothers,... blues icons, Little Milton, Albert and Earl King or even Broadway's Leslie Uggams, singer-songwiter-guitarist Billy Thompson has earned consistent public and critical acclaim since 1987. Thompson's music bristles with the infectious, syncopated sounds of New Orleans, the electricity of great rock 'n' roll, the punchy verve of Memphis soul and the heartfelt power of blues, funk and jazz. By turns punchy and poignant, earthy and elegant, his vivid songwriting draws from a rich stylistic well to create classic American music that is steeped in tradition yet unmistakably vital and contemporary. His tasty, melting pot style is is highlighted on his 1991 debut album, "Coat of Many Colors," "Tangerine Sky" in 1998 and his latest work, "Area 51." Whether performing original material or covering familiar music everyone has heard, Billy's impassioned vocals, virtuostic guitar work and artistic vision never fail to deliver.
