For my brother Daba and all friends from azzuls!
Hard Roads and High Water will mark my fourth CD release, a labour of love I have collaborated on with my friends and bandmates from Texas Flood. We wanted to make a record reflecting our musical influences, and we hope people enjoy hearing it as much as we have enjoyed recording it. This Kickstarter campaign aims to recoup some of the expenses for the recording and mastering, to get the artwork completed, and finally, to have it released on CD. The album has been a two-year process with countless hours invested and is something we're very proud of. We appreciate all the contributions and thank you in advance for your support.
-Paul Kype

A lifelong musician, Paul Kype has spent his entire career committed to performing and proving that the demand for live music isn't going anywhere. From age 16, Paul had been a member of various bands until he marked a new path in 1993, while working in the Vancouver club scene. Texas Flood was born with Paul Kype on lead guitar and vocals, Simon Hardman on bass, and the illustrious Vancouver veteran Jerry Adolphe of "Chilliwack" on drums. After touring throughout the 90s, the band landed a house gig at the infamous Yale Hotel, where he met Canadian Rock legend, Jerry Doucette. It wouldn't be long before Paul joined the Doucette band, touring for many years and playing festivals with some personal heroes, such as Johnny Winter. The song "Run Buddy Run," to be released on this album, was written to honour his friendship with Jerry Doucette, after he passed away in April of 2022.
In 2004, Paul relocated to Alberta, where the band welcomed new members while continuing to play coastal gigs with his founding friends. Through the years, Paul has remained steadfast in his craft, embracing the evolution of Texas Flood along the way. Playing with Steve Keenan since 2007, the two have supported each other in various projects, with Paul recording and producing Steve's last album, "In My Hands," released in 2022. While they had ventured apart for several years, they remained close friends. Their time spent working together in the studio on Steve's record re-sparked their desire to play together, with Keenan becoming an integral part of the band again.
It was also in 2007 that Paul welcomed long-time drummer for the "Corb Lund Band", Brady Valgardson. The two became fast friends and have worked together ever since. Brady's regular touring with a prominent band inevitably led to scheduling conflicts. Thankfully, his dad, Brad Valgardson, was also an excellent drummer and could fill in with Texas Flood any time he was on the road. They struck a chord when Brady brought in fellow Corb Lund bandmate Kurt Ciesla on bass guitar in June of 2022. Having spent years on the road with Brady, Kurt was a natural fit for the tight-knit band.
The chemistry between Paul Kype and the other members of Texas Flood is impossible to deny. Since the release of their live performances at Blues Can in December 2023, the genuine magic of this collaboration has become increasingly apparent. Having recorded the gig, Paul set out to make some live mixes for his mother as a favourite Christmas gift. With such good quality audio recordings, he decided to upload a few videos of the songs to refresh their website. It wouldn't be until weeks later, when a friend congratulated him on the success of the videos, that he discovered they were gaining some serious traction on YouTube. For the first time in his lifelong musical career, his band gained MILLIONS of views and thousands of new fans worldwide!

The Gravel Project - Wishful Thinking

Originally created by Andrew Gravel (vocals, guitar), The Gravel Project is an all star band of Boston music veterans including brother, Jordan Gravel (organ, keys), Dave Fox (drums), Eguie Castrillo (percussion) and Sarah Seminski (vocals).
The Gravel Project’s  record, Wishful Thinking, supersedes the jam-band persona by melding gritty guitar riffs and improvisational jazz methods. Imagine if 90s alt-rock legends Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain were to join the junior-high jazz band. The result lies at the heart of The Gravel Project’s new album Wishful Thinking. Since 2010, when their first recordings dropped—an EP entitled More Ways Than One—The Gravel Project has played bars, breweries, and ski resorts throughout the Northeast. In corner stages and bustling lodges this team of learned musicians developed a sound that fuses jazz, blues, funk, and rock n’ roll. On Wishful Thinking they infuse their roots with a dose of heavy rock. Due out November 24th, this record features a distinct lineup change and a newfound emphasis on collaboration.
For years Andrew Gravel maintained the position of bandleader. He composed the music, wrote and sang the lyrics, and played all of the solos on guitar. This was until 2014 when Jordan Gravel, Andrew’s brother, joined the band. “I think our bass player missed a gig and Jordan had to fill in the bass parts,” said Gravel. Jordan now plays keys for The Gravel Project, both the Hammond B3 organ and a Fender Rhodes electric piano. He joined after the band’s self-titled debut record, and is an integral part in the creation of Wishful Thinking.
“I think it’s a little unusual for us to feature a B3 in the bass chair when we’re playing blues rock stuff and not just funk” says Andrew Gravel. “I think it makes the band much more interesting when it’s not all guitar solos. It’s a balance of Jordan playing organ and Rhodes solos and bouncing that off guitar solos.”
The Hammond B3’s smooth screams are certainly a key factor in the group’s expanding sound. Popularized by jazz pianist Jimmy Smith in the late 1950’s and later utilized in rock n’ roll by prog-rocker Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake and Palmer), this unique organ originally allowed studio bands to cover the bass part on soul and jazz records when there wasn’t a bassist available. Jordan Gravel’s manipulation of the organ provides Wishful Thinking with a fuller sound adding succinct layers of harmony and rhythm to his brother’s guitar playing.
Wishful Thinking is a collaborative endeavor. Andrew and Jordan Gravel co-wrote all of the music and most of the lyrics together while inviting two additional writers to contribute their words. The grinding upbeat track “That Low Friend,” the alt-rock break-up contemplation “Long Lost” and sturdy love ballad, “Wishful Thinking” are all written by Andrew Gravel and his wife, Leslie. Gravel also co-wrote the lyrics to “Not Alone” with his cousin Jeff Blaney. It’s a song “about living in the moment with good people and good times,” says Gravel. With Boston-based blues singer Sonya Rae Taylor belting backing vocals, this track embraces a vibe present in the sounds of Tedeschi Trucks Band, perfect for an outdoor festival.
While building a strong creative community, Andrew Gravel moves forward through connecting with his past. “I’m revisiting earlier influences I had in life,” says Gravel. “I realized that I had taken a departure from rock for a while.” This realization came when Gravel attended a recent Pearl Jam concert. Even though The Gravel Project’s first two records feature cutting guitar solos, which often embrace Duane Allman’s warm classic rock twang, funk and jazz characteristics still reigned.
After the show, Gravel dove back into alt-rock sounds that Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain spearheaded in the 1990s. Here he found an outlet for heavier lyricism and began “writing songs that are a bit darker.” “Loaded Words,” a fast-paced cut that deals with the upsurge of mass shootings and excessive gun violence in the U.S. exemplifies these influences more than any other track on the album. Gravel also become enamored with modern rock groups as well; Gary Clark Jr.’s delta blues, White Denim’s psychedelic compositions, and Doyle Bramhall II’s smooth blend of funk and classic rock all inspired Wishful Thinking.
“Everyone in the band [Brandon Mayes on congas, Dave Fox on drums, Jordan Gravel on keys, and Andrew Gravel on guitar] is capable of playing jazz proficiently,” says Gravel. “Ya know, that makes us unique even when we’re playing at rock volumes in these structured kinda songs.  Still, there’s always going to be that element of improvisation.”
The record closes with a flare of experimentation. “Loyal Lilah Lovingly Dreams”—a fitting song title for any Beatles’ record—is a soothing instrumental that ebbs and flows with gentle electric guitar riffs and inventive percussion techniques. “It leaves you with a certain feel… showing a softer sweeter side of the band,” says Gravel. This dreamy track portrays their ability to traverse multiple genres.

“This album is a personal exploration of the complexities of relationships - how they shape us, challenge us, and teach us about ourselves,” founding member, vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Andrew Gravel explains. “Every song weaves together themes of love, trust, remorse, and reconciliation.” "This album captures a very specific moment in my life - almost every song was born within an 18-month period,” says Andrew. “While our earlier albums often covered a wide range of subjects, “Find What You Need” is, at its core, about the complexities of relationships.” Unlike previous albums, "Find What You Need" is the first to be produced outside the band. The record was recorded at Power Station New England - a replica of the legendary New York City Power Station/Avatar Studios - with Grammy-winning producers John Paterno (Gov’t Mule, Bonnie Raitt, Robben Ford) and Greg Ogan (Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson). Working with external producers allowed the band to focus entirely on the performance. “John and Greg challenged us with fresh ideas and innovative recording techniques that pushed our boundaries,” Andrew explains. Another defining feature of this album? Live recording. The band chose to capture their raw energy as performers, keeping overdubs to a minimum for an authentic, organic sound that captures the live essence of The Gravel Project.

 2. Nobody's Fault But Mine - 5:02
 3. Sit Down Servant - 3:36
 4. Wade In The Water - 3:02

 7. If You're Ready - 3:33
 8. I Wonder Why - 3:04
 9. Respect Yourself - 4:37
10. Chain Of Fools - 2:58

Kickstarting the summer of 2025 is the new eponymous album by The Bluesmasters featuring Cassie Taylor. Released via Exulans Records, the new record represents the creative collaborative group’s eighth studio release – with the blues scion Cassie Taylor leading the eleven-piece group and bringing the gospel, soul, and blues influences to the centre stage. The Bluesmasters Featuring Cassie Taylor is a live studio record showcasing fresh inspiration across ten songs written by powerhouse artists such as The Staple Singers, Ramsey Lewis, O.V. Wright, and Aretha Franklin to name a few. Opening the set with unwavering confidence, the group revisits The Staple Singers’ call and response number “Downward Road”. A solid Chicago shuffle foundation is built upon with powerful lead and soulful backing vocals, screaming guitar licks, with fuzzed blues harmonica adding the finishing touch to this short-and-sweet energy bomb! Following the starter, we are introduced to a Blind Willie Johnson classic, “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” – blues at its finest with vocal harmonies sure to bring tears to your eyes. A hymn “Sit Down Servant,” follows, spiced up with heavily distorted lead guitar parts. Next on the menu is a rock take on the African-American spiritual “Wade in the Water”. The relentless driving rhythm pulls this piece like a locomotive on a railway. Definitely one of the stand-out tracks of the album. The musicianship of this group is impeccable – it’s so easy to forget The Bluesmasters Featuring Cassie Taylor has actually been recorded live! The bittersweet R&B ballad “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry” is no exception to that – wonderful electric organ parts are met by a rocking groove and crowned by heartfelt singing. Ready or not, the upbeat rhythm of the 1922 hymn “If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again” will carry you away. On a similar ready-or-not note, another groovy The Staple Singers’ tune follows, aptly titled “If You’re Ready”. The Staples tribute continues with a couple more tracks: a slow blues number “I Wonder Why” weighing tonnes and bringing that killer blues harmonica back into the mix, and one of their most beloved songs “Respect Yourself” paving the way to the album’s grand finale – a somewhat bluesier and funkier take on Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools”.This self-titled album is a collection of soul-infused blues, with a sprig of gospel, delivered with rock and roll attitude. This is testament to the belief upon which this group was founded in the first place – that R&B “got soul” as obviously as it may sound; however, the best rock “got soul” too. The Bluesmasters Featuring Cassie Taylor is a fine record, created by an extremely talented bunch that, by the sounds of it, must have had great fun in the process of making it.

Al Grigg - Blues and Other Things

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2015
Time: 29:52
Size: 68,7 MB
Label: Self-Released
Styles: Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. All the Way Home - 2:49
 2. Your Meal Ticket (I Ain't Gonna Be) - 3:05
 3. It Just Don't Have to Be That Way - 3:47
 4. Dead End Boogie - 5:33
 5. I'm Gonna Jump Right Into the Fire - 3:26
 6. In Cecilia's Garden - 3:55
 7. American Dream - 7:14

Al Grigg has enjoyed a pretty cool music career since his 1975 debut album with one of the pioneer indie bands, The Flying Dogs of Jupiter. Since then he has done a little bit of everything, from playing with a 50s/60s tribute band, to traveling to three continents while living overseas for a decade. Al returned to the United States in 2010 and formed The Fine Line, who he still plays with in the New York / New Jersey area. He gets out on his own too, with an upcoming tour abroad and a new solo CD to entertain his fans.Blues and Other Things is the latest self-produced album from Grigg, and he did all of the heavy lifting on this one. Al wrote all seven of the songs (some of them from Flying Dogs of Jupiter albums), took the lead on all of the vocals, and played all of the guitar and drum parts. Guest artists Greta Tristram (harmonica) and Frank Kaiser (rhythm guitar) joined him on this project.Looking at the sleeve for this disc, it appears that Al Grigg is a bit of tone junkie, as he made notes of the different guitars and amplifiers that he used to get the desired sounds in the studio. It certainly worked out well, as you will hear in the opener, “All the Way Home.” This is a country rocker with hard and crunchy overdriven guitars, and Al’s voice goes all the way from smooth to jagged — he can really howl out the lyrics! This is followed up by a more straight-up blues tune, “Your Meal Ticket (I Ain’t Gonna Be),” which uses two or three layers of guitars to achieve a fun and bouncy beat under Griggs smorgasbord of double entendres.Keeping thing moving, the next tune is “It Just Don’t Have to Be That Way,” which provides a healthy dose of smooth rhythm and blues to accompany the heavy lyrics. Grigg lays down a very tasteful guitar solo on this one, and he has a wonderful feel for the instrument. Then the mood turns to country blues with “Dead End Boogie” which has some well-placed harp from Tristam and plenty of catchy guitar licks. There are a also a three rock (or maybe even pop) tracks. “I’m Gonna Jump Right Into the Fire” and “In Cecelia’s Garden” are well constructed, as their lush instrumentation and vocal harmonies go well with the lyrics which are thoughtful with good imagery. Finally, the set finishes up with seven minutes of “American Dream,” a hard-hitting Flying Dogs of Jupiter rocking jam where Grigg and Tristam get to finally cut loose with everything they’ve got.
So, after listening to the whole thing it turns out that the album title is true: this CD really is full of blues and other things! As this release comes in at a bit under 30 minutes it would have been nice to squeeze in a few more tracks. This being said, all seven of the songs are solid; Al Grigg did a fine job with Blues and Other Things, and it is an entertaining listen for fans of blues and blues-related music. Check out his website for winter tour information as there are shows listed for the UK and Ireland, with more dates to be announced soon.

Mike Guldin and "Rollin' & Tumblin'" - Caught Between The Blues And A Heartache

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2000
Time: 34:00
Size: 78,4 MB
Label: Self-Released
Styles: Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Caught Between The Blues And A Heartache - 4:20
 2. Rock With Me - 5:01
 3. You Can't Hurt Me - 4:27
 4. Soothe My Soul - 3:15
 5. Gettin' Over You - 3:02
 6. Roughhouse - 4:00
 7. Love My Baby - 5:23
 8. Switchin' Stick - 4:29

Mike started playing guitar and singing at age 16, inspired and influenced by blues legends Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Albert Collins, B.B. King as well as more contemporary artists such as the Allman Bros, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Rolling Stones. Also heavily influenced by R & B / Soul icons such as Sam & Dave, Booker T. and the MGs and the Stax sound, along with the southern-fried sounds of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Outlaws and a slew of country artists.
Having honed his craft playing in roadhouses, clubs, and bars for the last 20 years, his approach is that of a journeyman. Stinging guitar and soulful vocals are second nature for Guldin who has had the opportunity to open for such acts as Sam and Dave, Molly Hatchet and Roy Buchanan. Mike has also shared festival billing with Delbert McClinton, Levon Helm, the Nighthawks, Little Milton, Shemekia Copeland, Son Seals, Debbie Davies, E. G. Kight, Saffire the Uppity Blues Women, Michael Hill and his Blues Mob, John Sebastian and Jimmy Vivino. All of these influences and experiences come together in the original tunes of his new release "Caught Between the Blues and a Heartache". Combined with the raucous backing sounds of Rollin' & Tumblin', these inspirations are fully realized.

Sonny Gullage - Go Be Free

 9. Tattooed Wings - 3:48
10. Hot House - 3:51
11. File It Under Blues - 2:47
12. Home to You - 3:44

It’s no secret us blues aficionados start falling to pieces when the genre appears to be dying a slow death, with keepers of the flame vanish without a trace. Whatever did happen to Jonny Lang? Then, out of nowhere, somebody like the youthful, multiple talented Sonny Gullage is thrust into your listening bark, and all is right in the world.
A old soul trapped in a young man’s body with the wisdom of the blues in his bones, you could also argue that Gullage is a childhood prodigy — at just 12 years of age, he penned a song about the devastating environmental and effects of the BP oil spill. Serious stuff (especially for one so young), and his considerable songwriting skills have spilled out into adulthood, enabling him to build a bridge between the genre’s past and future.
Seamlessly stirring traditional blues sensibilities and a polished, contemporary sound (recruiting the deft touch of two-time Grammy award winner Tom Hambridge wasn’t such a bad idea), the New Orleans native maturely and marvelously covers themes of connection, evolution, and freedom on his debut album Go Be Free.
Born into a musical family in New Orleans, LA, Gullage’s bloodline leads you to Lead Belly, his dad, bassist Tony Gullage has played with Dr. John, and his grandmother Sister Alberta Gullage was a gospel singer in the 1960s. He invites you through the arched doors of his Southern family church on the title track with rapid handclaps, rich authentic organ, and the kind of galloping beat and aura that’s impossible to knock back.
When he’s not melding gospel and blues into something truly euphoric, Gullage astounds with his instrumental prowess and impressive songwriting, but it’s his profoundly distilled vocals that first make your eyes (and ears pop) on opener “Just, Kiss Me Baby.” It’s a funky feel-good anthem, pouring color on the musician’s ‘revelation’ when he first discovered he could sing the blues.
From pounding out boogie-woogie piano on “Stop That Stuff” to the chugging guitar and spiteful Chicago-blues notes of “Blues All Over You”, it’s brilliantly accessible throughout, no matter your blues palate. The LP’s (and arguably a genre) torchbearing moment stings the concerns of the current generation as Gullage and his buddy (and fellow blues phenomenon) Christone “Kingfish” Ingram trade fiery and soulful flourishes, licks, and verses on “Worried About The Young.”
What sets Gullage apart is his ability to demonstrate his reverence for blues history, while still pushing boundaries and offering a dazzling, contemporary declaration that this beloved musical form is alive and well. This release doesn’t just mark the revival of the legendary blues and roots Blind Pig record label that was originally in 1977 — it’s a sign that the future of the blues looks remarkably rosy.
I’ll wrap things up with a nonchalant nod to the playful lyrics and bouncy arrangement of “File It Under Blues” Another deliciously inspired number, which sees Sonny draws a somewhat humorous line under a relationship that has run its course — thankfully for us, his blossoming relationship with the blues is only just beginning. May they stay happy and harmonious for a long long time.

12. Don't Shine On Me - 3:25
13. Right Back Where I Started - 3:11

It might be easy to lump My Own Holiday in with other Guitar and Drum ensembles, like The Black Keys or The White Stripes but on their latest album, Reason to Bleed, My Own Holiday carve out a niche all their own. Their traditional meets modern approach is blues for the next generation.Joey Chrisman’s post Nirvana voice could very well redefine what the traditional blues singer sounds like. He’s vulnerable in all the right places and just when you think he’s about to falter he flexes his muscles like Popeye after downing a can of spinach and puts a whooping on your ass that you’ll feel for days. Nick Bartolo’s drumming is solid and holds the low end together so well that you don’t really miss the bass guitar.  The stripped down sound serves the material very well. There is no overplaying or long jams. My Own Holiday seems to have adopted the Tom Petty philosophy of “don’t bore us; take us to the chorus.” The album opens with a groovy little rocker, “Hold On Me” and progresses from there. “Whiskey in the Well” is a David Rawlings-esque acoustic ballad, and “On the Floor Blues” is an example of how these guys can play down and dirty blues with the best of the them.  They reinvent boogie rock with the track “Smile” and create one of the most interesting moments on the record. While there is definitely a lot of rock and roll on Reason to Bleed, don’t be fooled. Chrisman and Bartolo are blues men at heart. Reason to Bleed is spattered with all the blood and guts that made Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Water’s such powerful artists in their day. With Reason to Bleed,  My Own Holiday joins the  fraternity of blues based acts like Gary Clark Jr. and others who are redefining the genre.

10. New Man - 4:00
11. You Found Me - 3:31

Fred Hostetler kicks off 2025 with the new single ‘Your Mind Is On Vacation’. The classic Mose Allison tune gets a fresh but simple blues-rock arrangement and the lyric “Your mind is on vacation and your mouth is working overtime” resonates in this present era ofmindless chatter. “Your Mind Is On Vacation’ Release Date: Thursday, March 13 on Mukthiland Records.    Using additional lyrics including “talking trash,” Hostetler furtherdescribes the displeasure with this type of individual before breaking out of the song entirely and into the comfort of good time rockin’ blues, a la his former band, Blue By Nature. The artist turned to northern Indiana musician friends from his youth, Tim Heist onharmonica and Eric Troyer on piano, to create a band feel that would include their bluesroots. This single will be included on Hostetler’s forthcoming album ‘Blues Back Pages’ scheduledfor release April 2025.   “When I accidentally came across the blues song ‘Your Mind Is On Vacation’ (and your mouth is working overtime) on YouTube, I knew it was important to do my own rendition,” says Hostetler. “I immediately heard it in a different way, a fresh approach using multiple blues genres and finally spinning off into a groove reminiscent of Blue By Nature and a relief from the ‘yakety yak’. So, there you go. Something a little bit different to enjoy. It’s a song that is perhaps a sign of the times, about someone who values himself above all others. An interesting side note is that many in the blues community attribute the title to a phrase first used by legendary blues guitarist Buddy Guy.

Louisiana's New Bluesman:
“A leading light of the younger generation of blues artists…a jubilantly raucous, crispy, fully realized sound enriched by unselfconscious virtuosity…musically adventurous, biting and exploratory.” –Living Blues
“D.K. Harrell picks up the baton and carries his [music] into the future, creating formidable electric blues.” –Vintage Guitar
“D.K. Harrell stands tall. His mature musical conversations are inspiring…his voice custom-built for the blues. A funky soul stew of traditional music and contemporary lyrics.” –Blues Music Magazine
Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter D.K. Harrell, one of the most formidable young stars of the current blues resurgence, sounds like no one else on the scene today. With his stinging, single-note string bending, deep soul vocals, and attention-grabbing original songs, the 27-year-old Harrell—a major draw at blues festivals around the world—is already in a league of his own.
Now, with his Alligator Records debut album, Talkin’ Heavy, D.K. Harrell cements his place among the leading voices of the new generation of blues players. This Blues Music Award-winning guitarist with a soul man’s voice and a well-earned reputation as a mesmerizing live performer delivers fresh, emotion-packed blues informed by the tradition he loves and played with the foot-pounding fervor of a revival tent preacher.
Talkin’ Heavy continually surprises with twelve instantly memorable original songs filled with Harrell’s biting guitar work and authoritative, church-born vocals. Produced by studio wizard and musician Christoffer “Kid” Andersen and recorded at Andersen’s now-famous Greaseland Studio, the album shows Harrell as a generational guitar talent with a wide-eyed vision and a street-smart singing style bringing life to the timeless songs he’s writing. He goes deep on the title track, taking a hard look at his surroundings before declaring, “the world is just heavy with the blues.” From blazing album opener A Little Taste to the proudly taking-care-of-business Grown Now to the feel-good groove of Vibe With Meto the foot-stomping closer Praise These Blues, Talkin’ Heavy is an affirmation of the sheer power of modern blues.
D.K. Harrell was born D’Kieran Harrell in Ruston, Louisiana in 1998. He first heard B.B. King at age two and responded by singing along. He sang in his church choir as a boy while continuing to be drawn to the blues. Films like The Blues Brothers, Cadillac Records and Raymade him eager to sing and play. He received his first guitar at 12, and by 16 was writing his own songs. Initially inspired by B.B. King, the youthful Harrell spent hours studying every video of King he could find, learning not just King’s licks but ultimately his tone, his finesse, his stage craft, and his band leadership skills. Harrell’s first paying gig was as an invited guest to the B.B. King Symposium in Indianola, Mississippi—where he played The Thrill Is Gone on King’s iconic guitar, Lucille—backed by members of King’s touring band.
In 2022 Harrell won the B.B. King Of The Blues Award for Preserving Traditional Blues Heritage from the Jus’ Blues Music Foundation. In addition to B.B. King, Harrell fell under the spell of blues masters including Albert King, Freddie King, Elmore James, Muddy Waters and others, and made their styles part of his musical vocabulary. His debut album, The Right Man, was released on the Little Village label in 2023 to rave reviews and wildly excited fans. Rock & Blues Muse said, “D.K. Harrell raises every roof in town…he’s a phenomenon coming across like a lifetime blues master…an outstanding singer and guitarist with a big-league presence. Amazing…he’s an absolute beast.” His massive, immediate success led him to win the prestigious Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Artist from The Blues Foundation.
Harrell has toured the U.S. and Europe multiple times, astonishing audiences everywhere he plays. People all over the world can’t get enough of D.K. Harrell’s high-energy and always unpredictable live shows. In 2024 alone he performed across the U.S. and Canada, and toured all over the European continent, with shows in Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, France, Belgium, Spain and Norway. Blues Blastcalled him, “The fastest-rising talent in the blues today…his stinging, single-note runs hit like a hurricane. His rich tenor swings like a pendulum. A new star is born.”
Joining Alligator is a thrill for Harrell. “I’m a huge Hound Dog Taylor and Koko Taylor fan,” he says. “When I was a kid maybe 15 or 16, before I really knew how to play, I sent Bruce (Iglauer, Alligator Records president and founder) some videos that were not very good. He got back to me with all kinds of encouragement, telling me to keep at it.”
Now, with Talkin’ Heavy, D.K. Harrell is ready to bring his new music directly to his fans and to his peers. He already has more than 20 festivals booked for 2025 and that number continues to swell.

13. Close to You - 4:15

Just My Luck, the album from the Terry Quiett Band, is an album that proves that music is just as much about feeling and expression as it is technique and ability. While Quiett is obviously a very good musician from a technical standpoint (which is proven by his unbelievable vocals on “Close to You” and gutsy guitar solos on “Satisfied” and “Getting Through to Me”), most of the album is very simple, but it is also extremely genuine and heartfelt. The first thing that stands out about this album is that the band really does sound like a band. They play together and they listen to each other; nobody in the band overplays. There is great interplay between the musicians that creates a very human, identifiable quality that draws the listener into the music and doesn’t let him go until the last note of the closing ballad (“Close to You”) has died. Basically, the album sounds like a set that you might hear at a smoky blues club, a sound that is hard to capture on a recording. Yet everything that you would hear or feel at this club – the dirt, the grime, the sound of fingers scratching the strings of a guitar, the singer humming his guitar lines as he plays them – is captured perfectly on the recording. This album isn’t perfect, but then again, it isn’t supposed to be. What it is though is human, genuine and heartfelt. That being said, it contains everything you could want in a set: beautiful ballads, Texas style shuffles, swing blues tunes, a little bit of jazz, a little bit of gospel, and even a tune where Quiett is accompanied only by acoustic guitar (“Judgement Day”). Quiett is a masterful singer and an excellent guitar player, but most of all he is a musician. He understands the power of emotion, the power of a band that knows each other and listens to each other. He understands the delicate balance between technique and emotion, and the result is, quite simply, a masterpiece.
Biography
In just a few years the Terry Quiett Band has become a mainstay across America’s Heartland. From 6th Street in Austin…to the windy city of Chicago…through the mountains of Colorado…across the deserts of Arizona…jamming down on Beale Street in Memphis…wherever they go the TQB has won over young and old with their energetic and soulful sound. Along the way they have forged relationships with Grammy-winning studio masters Jim Gaines and Blaise Barton, who have worked with legends of the blues industry such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, Steve Miller Band, George Thorogood, Luther Allison, Albert Collins, Pinetop Perkins, Willie Smith, Michael Burks and many more. Jim, Blaise and Terry first teamed up on the 2011 release Just My Luck (on Lucky Bag Records) exposing the Terry Quiett Band to a national audience for the first time. By the end of 2011 it was listed as #74 on the top 100 played CD's on the Roots Music Report Blues Chart for the year. They joined forces again in 2012 to record the live CD A Night at the Orpheum which received fantastic reviews from the blues world....

Black River Bluesman and The Cockroach Combo - Ants In My Kitchen

Tracks Listing:
 1. Ain`t No Good - 5:06

 9. By The End Of The Day - 3:00
10. Miss Captain Belle - 3:44
11. Tiger Leaping Gorge - 3:13
12. Cranberry Railroad - 2:49

The music of Black River Bluesman is hardly conventional. His first encounter with the blues was also contradictory. “One of my early favorites was Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Looking for Somebody’. I listened to it on tape over and over again, not understanding if it was music at all,” Jukka recalled in an interview with Roots. “Blues was marginal music in the 60s and 70s - there was something genuinely rebellious about it, and so it was perfect for a teenage boy who was skeptical of everything mainstream,” Juhola adds. Juhola has a lot of favorite artists, but he agrees to mention John Lee Hooker and R.L. Burnside in particular.
“In the early days, blues played a central social role, the whole genre of music was born from it,” Jukka outlined in an interview with the Italian radio station Mojo Station a couple of weeks ago. He believes that blues, like many other genres of music, is largely a white folk scene today.
The Cockroach Combo, which accompanies guitarist-singer Juhola, currently consists of Esa Santonen (drums), Jussi Konttinen (baritone guitar) and Juha Lindgren (harmonica). Jukka describes that the mainstream twelve-bar music is not heard in their work, but rather the music is rough, hypnotic and electric blues.
“We play everything with feeling, hoping that our sincerity will arouse emotions in the recipient. In my opinion, blues is at its best when you don’t actually perform a very long and well-written piece, but a song is born and it only exists at the moment of performance,” Jukka says.
BRB & CC’s sound has changed as the group has learned to better use the possibilities offered by the baritone guitar. Jukka describes: “Sometimes you can play riffs from high up - even in unison with the guitar - and then come back down to bounce with the bass drum.”
Jukka is quite enigmatic about the line-up’s upcoming album. He agrees to reveal that at least some slide playing will be heard. He promises that the new album will feature a completely new kind of blues on at least a few songs. “But of course we’ll stay with the roots of the blues, the muddy swamps. The atmosphere, on the other hand, is even more caveman-like!”
Black River Bluesman’s album “Ants in My Kitchen” (2005) attracted a lot of international attention. Among others, the British magazine Blues Matters! did an extensive article on the subject. BRB was also the band of the month in January by the prestigious Swedish publication Jefferson Blues Magazine.

Blue Baron, born Baron Phelps, was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago in 1958, the heart of the electric blues revolution of the 60's. Having receieved his first electric guitar at the age of 10, Blue began to absorb the different musical sounds and feelings of Rock, Funk, Soul, R&B, Blues and Jazz all of which can be heard in his playing today. He is especially fond of Jimi Hendrix and while we hear that influence in his playing, Blue is definitely his own man with his own style. What we hear in his playing is emotion, feeling, heart, soul and a whole lot of rhythm. There is a goodness and kindness about Blue as an individual and those feelings permeate his playing throughout his music. This record is filled with 11 blues-rocking soulful originals by Blue Baron and if you enjoy Blues Rock oriented music, this is a record that you will be thrilled to have in your collection as well as to listen to time after time. From beginning to end this record will captivate you Rock you, Roll you and Soul you.

Allow me to now tell you about some of my personal favorites. The opening track, "KEEP ON DRINKING", made one hell of a first impression on me and had me looking forward to more. The rhythm section is on fire with MAUREEN absolutely burning up the drums, the harp is sharp and the vocals and guitars are awesome. The groove the band was in on this one was extremely tight and it seemed that everyone was on the top of their game.
With a title like "NOTHING LEFT TO TAKE", ya gotta guess this track is nothin' but the blues, and you'd be very right. It's a good ole torch burner with excellent slow and soulful vocals, soft and sultry piano, and long and searing guitar licks. This one may be the cream of this crop. It's nearly eight minutes and every second is enjoyable.
"SLOW DOWN BABY" does exactly that. It's very soft and sassy with excellent vocal harmonizing. MICHAEL and his wonderful acoustic slide along with beautiful harp playing by LARRY highlight this one.
"HAVING HARD TIMES ON A BLUE PLANET" is another hot one. The tempos gone into high gear and the guys are rockin'. On this one, MAUREEN locks in on the drums with the harmonic background singers as the lead guitars and harmonica cut loose, and it sounds like all hell is breaking out. Ya gotta love this one.
The next track could have very easily been written by my wife. It sounds like something she tells me everyday. It's titled "I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE HOME" and the lyrics go like this.........."I'm so glad you're home, I'm so glad you're home, I was blue till I met you, I'm so glad you're home. With your pretty face and your warm embrace, I'm so glad your home". It's as wonderfully sung as it was written. The swing dancers will love this one.
This excellent disc comes to a close with a less than 90 second track very similar to a Cephas & Wiggins work. It's called "DEAD END BLUES". It's a slow acoustic number with great acoustic pickin' by MICHAEL, backed up by some superb harp by LARRY.

Roger’s songs have been on several volumes of the “Greatest Indie Artists in the World” international compilation CD series and several local compilations have included his music. His song ‘This Space Reserved’ was featured on the Music Choice cable TV channel. His songs have appeared in movies, including “Mr. ID”, starring Ami Dolenz (daughter of Monkee, Micky Dolenz). The song Rise & Fall of the Blues appeared in the major motion picture, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Roger has several music libraries representing his tunes. His songs have been on the airwaves in Europe, New Zealand, Australia, China, and Taiwan. Roger’s music has shared playlists around the world with Johnny Cash, B.B. King, The Dixie Chicks, Neil Diamond, the Eagles, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, and Dwight Yoakum just to name a few. Roger has performed at the Cincy Bluesfest, and on the same bills with artists like the Cowboy Junkies, Peter Frampton, and Little Charlie and the Nightcats. Based on extensive airplay in New Zealand, he was invited to play at an international festival there. He has performed live on the radio on WVXU, WNKU, and WAIF, and on TV (including City Nights (9 times)). You can find Roger performing in varied venues from coffee shops to festivals, from Cincinnati to Chicago to Hong Kong. He performs solo and in duos with award-winning guitarists such as Marcos Sastre, Jerry Hedge, and Steve Sigsbee. He has performed extensively with his band of veteran Cincinnati musicians, Roger Y & the Quick Replies. romoting his soon-to-be-released (fall 2013) CD, The Same But Different.
His 3rd CD, The Same But Different, was the logical next step in Roger’s atypical, in-reverse musical career. The 1st CD, ‘Sheepless..’, was a faux ‘tribute’ CD, with well-known Cincy groups interpreting Roger’s songs. The 2nd CD, ‘Communal Effort’, had Roger participating more with individual Cincy musicians in performing his compositions and singing a few tunes: this disc contains compositions in the genres ,R&B , funk, country, blues, rock and jazz.
By the 3rd CD, The Same But Different, Roger has assumed the role of lead singer, and also included his versions of off-the-beaten-path ‘cover’ tunes previously done by artists such as Wynn Stewart, Ben Vaughn, and Johnny Cash. Recorded in Cincinnati and Nashville, the CD features appearances by guitarist Bill Kirchen (of Commander Cody fame), and Nashville pickers Chris Casello and James LaRitz.

Introducing Blueshammer Blueshammer is the latest effort by some of the most seasoned Blues Musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's members hail from all over the San Francisco Bay Area and have taken clubs by storm from San Francisco to the Monterey/ Santa Cruz Areas. They have been met with rave reviews and anxious invitations to return everywhere that they have appeared. The most frequent comment is that "there is something very special happening in the band between the diverse playing styles of the two guitarists" turned up a further notch by the addition of a solid rhythm section and a great horn player. The excitement grows from the opening notes to the end of the evening. Hold on to your seats and get your dancin' shoes out as your feet are gonna' wanna' move when you hear them play. Blues, Lane Coker and Big Delta, Georgi and the Rough Week, and The Teeze. Tim has also further honed his bass-playing skills by filling-in for various bands whenever the need arose for several different bands here in the Bay Area, playing in venues from Ely's in Oakland all the way down to The Fogbank in Capitola. Major band influences on Tim's playing range from the Robert Cray Band all the way to Al Di Meola, to Rush and then back to Albert King....a huge range of musical influences shape his bass playing. Tim is always happiest holding down the fattest groove possible, locking-in tight with the drummer, keeping the bottom-end solid so whatever's happening on top can be completely comfortable. Scotty "Dog" Griffin - Drums Scotty "Dog" Griffin - Drums Wanting to play drums is one of Scotty's early memories. He grew up in the SF bay area and started playing real drums at age 10. He played all through grammar school, high school and dropped out of college to go on the road with jazz and cover bands. He made a live CD with San Jose's own local jazz legend Eddie Gale, played with Ron Thompson, Murray Lowe, and Peter Barshay. He is influenced by the many masters that have paved the way before him from Baby Dodds, Zutty Singleton and Sid Catlett through to the great players of today in many various styles. Some of the best moments of his life are when he picks up a rhythm or beat from one of his idols . . . The list is vast.

The tones in that first Harmony-Stella guitar have carried Larry Sandlin from jamming with the records of his youth to sharing the stage with the likes of Preston Shannon and the Gamble Brothers Band on Beale Street. Larry's influences include The Allman Brothers, Steve Miller, and The Band, but it was the song styles of Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters that helped create "Blue Larry Blue." Although born and now back in Nashville, Tennessee, Larry has followed his music from the western skies of Phoenix, Arizona to the southern spokes of Atlanta, GA and Memphis, TN. Whether it's with his '54 Gibson LG-1, the Fender-Clapton Strat or the metal-bodied Dobro Resonator, Larry performs as a solo act as well as fronting his own roadhouse blues band. Larry has played a variety of college gatherings, marquee blues clubs like BB Kings and special concerts like Target House at St. Jude's Hospital and the Zoo Rendezvous for the Memphis Zoo Society. Blue Larry Blue has even been featured in a book, the novel Company Confidential, by Tom McCrory. Blue Larry Blue has recorded two CD's to date. 2000's "Big Blue World" and the brand CD, "Analog Guy". "Big Blue World" includes ten original blues tunes with a stellar band, including the piano and organ sounds of the great Reese Wynans. "Analog Guy" is a return to his rootsy- roadhouse sound. His new power trio performs six new originals and four creative covers, inspired by his musical heroes.
Blue Larry Blue is a native of Nashville, and grew up playing in various bands around Nashville. Having played over the years in every musical configuration from rock to bluegrass, BLB has refined his sound and focus to the blues. "That's what I perform best as an artist. I found it frustrating as a songwriter in Nashville that I was writing songs for the Country market that I could not convincingly perform as my voice just doesn't sound authentic for the Country format. So to fill my need to perform, I decided to return to what I'm able to perform best, and that's the blues."
