Originally conceived in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2003, the Out of Favor Boys have evolved into a blues staple in Southwest Michigan.
The first Out of Favor Boys shows were at O’Duffy’s Pub, in the heart of Kalamazoo’s student ghetto, featuring Danny Ouellette, Joel Krauss and Tony Sproul. In the summer of 2003, the trio added a rhythm section, Tim Brouhard and Kevin Dorcy, and an organist, John Ford. Latethat year, the Out of Favor Boys won the KVBA blues challenge, winning the right to represent Kalamazoo at the 2004 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN.
The following spring the band recorded a debut EP, Halo (2004).
Following the release of their second self-produced CD (Can’t Be Good) in 2006, John Ford left the band. Shortly thereafter, Kevin Dorcy moved to Chicago and Mike Porter stepped in to fill the void behind the drum kit. In 2010 the band released a live double-album CD that was recorded at Kalamazoo’s 411 Club, where OFB served as the house band. From its very beginning until the fall of 2014, OFB hosted a number of blues jams in and around Kalamazoo, including Wonderful’s Funky Basement, Boomerang’s, the Lamplighter, and the 411Club. For much of the band’s time as house band at the 411 Club, Tim Miller was the band’s Thursday night drummer. In the spring of 2015, more than 11 years since the band’s inception, the Out of Favor Boys are going stronger than ever! Tommy Ufkes has taken over as drummer, and the band is writing and recording new music and exploring new musical venues.
This album was recorded in one day in an empty warehouse in Lawton, Michigan. Danny recorded the last notes of his final solo while we were all holding up the police, who were called at two in the morning because of noise. It's a great solo.

When Marva takes the stage-explosions occur-the spine tingles and adrenaline rises, for here live is the singer who touches the deepest recess of the human soul with the most powerful voice out of New Orleans''.
Born-March 20, 1948- Died March 23, 2010.
Down in Louisiana, Marva Wright is called the Blues Queen. Fans of her energy-filled performances, both live and recorded, call her a lot of other things, too, like "Marvalous Marva." The "bluesiana" numbers she favors are a strong showcase for her dynamic, gospel-rooted voice. One listen would be enough to convince any newcomer of her strengths, which is surprising in light of the fact that the vocalist was a late bloomer who didn't turn professional until 1987, when she was creeping up on 40. Even then, she only began singing as a way to support her family with a second job. Bourbon Street in the Big Easy led to more than she had dreamed, ultimately landing her gigs in Europe and across the world, with stops in France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Russia, Norway, Sweden, and Brazil. Her appearances in the U.S. include Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York, as well as Texas, California, Vermont, Colorado, and Florida.
Although she made a career out of music late in life, Wright actually began to sing much earlier, when she was nine years old. Like many artists, her first public singing efforts were heard in church, with her mother as her accompanist.

Wagner The Band - XTC

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:2025
Time:35:19
Size:81,2 MB
Label:R.A.W. Records
Styles:Rock/Blues Rock/Funk Rock/Pop Rock

Tracks Listing:
 1. Don't Stop Movin' - 2:51
 2. Run Away with Me (feat. Helena May) - 4:10
 3. XTC - 3:39
 4. Golden - 3:25
 5. Good Enough - 3:24
 6. Last of Your Kind - 2:54
 7. Little Thief - 2:51
 8. Moonshine Symphony - 3:41
 9. Reptilian Attack - 3:16
10. Daisy - 5:04

If ever you needed a reminder that the holy sonic tryptic of quintessential US genres – blues, soul, and rock ‘n’ roll – always made easy bedfellows, the XTC, the second album from Vienna’s Wagner the Band does just that.In fact, just the opener, “Don’t Stop Movin’” with its horn-driven, soul-soaked, funky rock and roll ways, more than does the job, immediately feeling like something that The Average White Band might have fired off back way back when, or that Lenny Kravitz, even today, would wrestle you to the ground to get his hands on!
The title track does all of that too, only infused with an additional Latin lilt, and “Golden” is a masterclass in subtlety and dynamics, running from serene acoustic lulls to horn-blasted crescendos. But if those songs lean into a rockier, weightier style, albeit one tempered and polished by soul and funk, blues, and pop-aware infectiousness, there is also plenty of time for more understated moves, too.
“Little Thief” wanders into the realms of soul-pop ballad, blending the deftness and delicacy of the former with the gentle contagion of the latter. “Moonshine Symphony” is sophisticated and seductive, and between these worlds, “Daisy” seems to ebb and flow, moving from the dreamy and spacious into stratospheric anthemic salvos.
And for all its nostalgic threads and analogue sounds, its echoes of the past and familiar vibes, XTC keeps perfect pace with the modern world. Less an album that revels in past glories, more one that picks up that torch, runs headlong into the future, and writes a new chapter in the annals of music as it does so.

Michael Katon - Boogie, Pt.1 & Pt.2 (2025) The long-awaited (10 years?) new release from Boogieman from Hell is finally here! Nothing can be more clear than the album title and song titles! Rumor has it that someone jokingly asked Mike how many songs he had written with “boogie” in the title. Here is his answer! Ten variations on one theme, and yes... every song is a boogie! Advertising does not deceive! It's all there... raw vocals... dirty distorted guitar... searing slide playing... and a sense of humor. You pretty much know what to expect from a Katon album and this one doesn't disappoint! The big plus is that John Eppinga plays drums... Mike's longtime collaborator. A solid foundation on which Katon can open up and improvise. And he improvises! All ten tracks are basically the basis for Michael's long solos, and I love it! Mike is a highly underrated guitarist with his own unique style... not to mention one of the best slide guitarists out there. Like most musicians of his generation from Detroit (Nugent/McCarthy/Farner/Coda), you can expect it to be straight forward and loud! Nothing cute or pretentious here! My personal favorites at the moment are "Get your boogie on" and "Lazy boy boogie part two" but you can't go wrong with either of these songs! If you're a fan of blues, boogie, hard rock, or dare I say it, even metal, you absolutely must listen to this album. And let's hope we don't have to wait another ten years to hear the sequel! Rating... 4 decibels out of 5! While the music of legendary Detroit musician Michael Cato may well be described as "blues," that doesn't do justice to the power, intensity, and gritty "Motor City" character that Cato conveys in every note and every chord. Since he first began playing in the bars and clubs of Detroit at the age of fifteen, Cato has infused the traditional blues sound with his own Michigan "feel" and is today considered one of the finest blues-rock exponents in the world.

Before lockdown, UK singer Pat Fulgoni rehearsed his new blues band the “Pat Fulgoni Blues Experience” for a european tour.
No stranger to the blues Pat has in the past released this excellent solo blues album in Prague with many leading players from the Czech blues scene and you can often find his dulcet tones on many a modern electronic music production c/o BBC Radio One. Possibly why The Wire magazine referred to him as the "Jack Bruce of the e -generation"
The Blues Experience was all set for European festival dates this summer including the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival, Colne and Blues Alive, Sumperk. They'll pick up after covid and Pat is already pencilled in for the Sumperk Blues Alive Festival, November 2021.
Previously only available on CD in the Czech Republic, this line up featuring Lukas and Jan Martinek on guitars performed live on Breakfast TV and featured in a Czech grammy winning documentary about the Czech blues scene.

Norman is one of those very first artists who with such iconic colleagues as Alexis Korner, Graham Bond helped to create the unique British Blues, R&B and Rock sound that captivated the world. Norman kept its signature sound alive throughout his distinguished career, whether playing solo or with a Who's Who of blues, soul and rock from both sides of the Atlantic, including Chuck Berry, Jack Bruce, Van Morrison, Peter Green, Buddy Guy, Ruby Turner and B.B. King. Though known primarily as a bluesman, Norman seamlessly moves among the genres of jazz, rock, pop and R&B with the grace and ease that characterise his performances and original songs. There aren't many of these gifted first and finest who defined the British Blues genre. Of these rare national treasures who still remain, none serve the music more faithfully than Norman Beaker: guitar, voice and original songs are as fresh and powerful as when he first began in the Northern clubs.

Matt Mann & The Shine Runners are an American rock band residing in Nashville, TN, formed by singer/songwriter and Oklahoma native, Matt Mann. With influences ranging from the Rolling Stones, Skynryd, The Black Crowes, Social D, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Matt Mann & The Shine Runners deliver their brand of raucous and memorable rock and roll music to enthusiastic crowds. Their bluesy, boozy, two guitar rock sounds transports listeners back into the early seventies, making their music timeless. The Shine Runners include Mann on rhythm guitar, Johnny Hawthorn/Hunter Wolfe on lead guitar, Jeff LeGore on bass and Shane Mayo on the drums. Peter Levin from the Greg Allman Band, Blind Boys of Alabama and Amanda Shires played B3 organ and upright piano on Anytime But Now and the soon to be released, Wrong Side of History. The highly anticipated Wrong Side of History album showcases the band’s signature heavy guitar rock and roll sound across diverse, well-written tracks, complemented by memorable drums, slide guitar, and keys. Backup singers Angela Primm and Gayle Mayes definitely “take you to church”. The album flows authentically from its powerful opening track to its softer closing song, leaving listeners wanting to play it all over again.
As Mike Shaner from the Hollywood Examiner put it so eloquently, “Matt Mann and The Shine Runners are just pure whiskey drinking Southern Rock. Crowds eat up Matt Mann’s cowboy-rocker stage presence and raspy Oklahoma twang.”

 6. Make the Blues Go Away - 6:28
 7. Get Up - 5:01
 8. All I Really Need Is Love - 4:38

Wayne Manby writes his own music. Wayne plays a bluesy lead guitar that reminds you of a lonely heart crying in the middle of a long hot night. He also plays keyboard, harmonica, bass, and drums. He sings lead and harmony and then mixes all the tracks.
The hard driving bluesy guitar is accompanied by catchy rhymns and a new sounding bass. There is a lot of soul in this rock sound that drips of old Sothern rock like the Allman Brothers and old Clapton-like riffs on the guitar which screams of heart wrenching blues. The rock sounds use life-like lyrics.

Unlike some other bluesmen now leading their own bands, guitarist and singer/songwriter Doug MacLeod spent many years as an apprentice before forming his own band. MacLeod has worked as a sideman for many different artists from the Los Angeles-area blues scene, including Big Joe Turner, Charles Brown, Pee Wee Crayton, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, and George "Harmonica" Smith. MacLeod was born in New York on April 21, 1946, and his parents moved to St. Louis shortly after his birth. He spent his teen years frequenting the blues clubs there, learning from people like Albert King, Little Milton, and and IkeTina Turner. He took up the bass in his teens and played around St. Louis with local bands before enlisting in the Navy. MacLeod was stationed in Norfolk, VA, and spent his off-duty time playing in blues bars. He eventually settled in Los Angeles, accompanying many other blues performers before forming his own band. His songs have been recorded by Albert King, Albert Collins, and Son Seals. MacLeod's 1984 album, No Road Back Home, was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award in 1984 and has since been reissued on compact disc on the Hightone label. MacLeod has widely available albums on Audioquest – Come to Find (1994), You Can't Take My Blues (1996), Unmarked Road (1997), and Whose Truth, Whose Lies? (2000). His first Audioquest disc features guest appearances by harmonica players Carey Bell and fiddle player Heather Hardy, while the second has a guest appearance by harp player George "Harmonica" Smith. MacLeod has also recorded for a variety of independent labels, including such albums as Woman in the Street, 54th and Vermont, and Ain't the Blues Evil. 2002 saw the release of MacLeod's A Little Sin, recorded in July of that year with producer/frequent collaborator Joe Harley.

Johnny Rawls - Heart & Soul

 7. Damn Cocaine - 3:36
 8. Your Love Is All I Need - 4:14
 9. Things CHange - 3:55
10. Good Lovin' Goin' On - 4:38

You can't re-invent the wheel but you can still make top of the line tires. Mr. Johnny Rawls has not invented a new genre of music but he's doing it as good as anyone ever has. With an impressive catalog of 9 studio albums full of original Soul Blues ranging from his classic "Can't Sleep At Night" thru his critically-acclaimed 2005 outing, "No Boundaries" Rawls has never succumbed to fads or flavor-of-the-month production tricks. He just makes Deep Soul Blues like they did in the 60s.  "Heart & Soul" is his same mix of midtempo Southern Soul & Blues, laced with horns, Cropper-esque guitar licks and raspy singing but it's as fresh and stirring as it was in the 60s. In fact the knockout "Missing You" is on par with Clarence Carter's "Slip Away", an obvious influence. The addition of sweet harmonica (Michael Kakuk) is an extra hook to what is already aq three and a half minute ear massage. "You're My Girl" is a quick booty shakin' romp featuring an extended guitar solo by Mike Killeen. "Still A Woman" is a classic Deep Soul ballad highlighting the earnest ache to Rawls seasoned voice. Perhaps the cut that'll garner the most attention is the driving "true real story" song "Damn Cocaine". A  bass heavy chugger with a perfectly timed stop and start that describes a friend's descent into addiction. "You can have fortune and fame and still get hooked on cocaine". Fortunately the song has a happy ending. Rawls has made plenty good music throughout his career but as he himself says: "This is the real Johnny Rawls".

Washington is considered Boston’s “queen of the blues,” where she has a long and storied history on the club scene.
Raised in a procession of gospel choirs in Southern Pines, North Carolina, Washington performed with classic R&B artists like Sam and Dave and Jackie Wilson throughout the South in her youth. Washington also made USO tours of the U.S. and Asia in the 1960s and recorded the Top 50 single “Dear Diary” for the New Orleans-based Conti label, then a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. After two decades off the road and out of the recording studio, Washington returned to performing in 1992 with a ten-piece band. On her debut for Tone-Cool, Blues at Midnight, Washington comes across best as an interpreter: she tackles B.B. King’s “Ask Me No Questions,” Jimmy Reed’s “Ain’t That Loving You Baby,” and a tune popularized by Jimmy Rushing and the Basie Orchestra and T-Bone Walker, “Evening.” It’s My Turn Now followed in 1997, and in early 2000,Washington returned with Good Things.

Aron Burton (born June 15, 1938 - died February 29, 2016) was an American electric and Chicago blues singer, bass guitarist and songwriter. In a long career as a sideman he has played with Freddie King, Albert Collins, Junior Wells, Fenton Robinson, Wild Child Butler, Jackie Ross, John Littlejohn, James Cotton, and Carey Bell, and has released a number of solo albums. Brother of Larry Burton.
In his forty-year career in the music business, Aron Burton has earned his title as the ultimate right-in-the-pocket bass player, backing such blues luminaries as the late Freddy King, Jimmy Witherspoon, Junior Wells, Jimmy Walker, Billy Boy Arnold, and Albert Collins, among many others. This CD (his second Earwig recording) is knee-deep in traditional blues with a little bit of soul thrown in for good measure.
"Aron Burton Live stands with the best of them. With the exception of two studio tracks, the album was recorded live last year at Buddy Guy's Legends and features guest appearances by harpist Lester Davenport and vivacious vocalist Liz Mandville Greeson. Vocals are spread amongst the band members, which is appropriate because Burton's avowed goal is to present a blues revue that puts the spotlight on all the stage talent. Aron Burton Live is a sterling example of just how good Chicago blues can still be...." -Illinois Entertainer

They have a funk-rock sound, they sound kind of like a cross between Jamiroquai and Led Zepplin. Excellent mix and direction. One of the first hits from Nick and company. Great soloing, vocals, and bluesy rock. If you've never heard KFloor before, it's a bluesy rocky swingy mix with vocals comparable to a young Chris Robinson (Black Crowes) and a less shriekish young Steven Tyler. If you want to find newer music from these guys, they regrouped and added soulfull female vocals and call themselves Trampled Under Foot, or TUF [..]
K-Floor uses the perfect combo of blues, funk, and rock on this one. Super talent and killer grooves make this one of my favorite albums, and just one listen will tell you why! It's well worth it!

"K-Floor: Nicholas (vocals, guitar); Justin (Hammond organ); Liev (bass); Zil (drums).Additional personnel: Tom Gillan (slide guitar); Lew London (violin); Jerry Klause (percussion).
The blues isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you're talking about music that has come out of Philadelphia -- the city is famous for its jazz, doo wop, soul, and hip-hop, but one tends to associate the blues with the Midwest and the South rather than a northeastern location like Philly. However, there is no law stating that a blues or blues-rock outfit cannot be based on the East Coast, and blues-rockers K-Floor (originally Killing Floor) have been a hot live attraction in the Philadelphia area since the late '90s. Besides, K-Floor was actually formed in Kansas City before moving east to Philly in 1997. This live CD was recorded at two of the band's East Coast gigs -- one at the North Star Bar in Philly, the other at the Bubba Mack Shack in Somers Point, NJ. Rats Live on No Evil Star isn't for blues purists or blues snobs -- the performances are blues-rock (with elements of jazz and funk incorporated), and not everything on the album has 12 bars. Nonetheless, everything that K-Floor plays has the feeling of the blues; that is true whether it is playing original material or putting its spin on Muddy Waters' "Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had." Those who are fans of Johnny Winter, Pat Travers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, or George Thorogood should have no problem getting into this album, but the artist that K-Floor inspires comparisons to more than anyone is Robben Ford. That's because K-Floor, like Ford, is a blues-rocker with a healthy appreciation of jazz -- these Philadelphia residents improvise a lot, and they don't hesitate to bring some of the jazz language to their blues-rock foundation. This CD falls short of stunning, but it's a generally enjoyable, if derivative, effort and indicates that K-Floor has a lot of potential". ~ Alex Henderson

The Arnesen Blues Band is my own blues project. After years of jamming in various unrehearsed blues "happenings", (blues being so easy, right?!), I felt I would like to deliver the music in a serious and accomplished way. Of course these two approaches are not mutually exclusive, yet it can be wonderful to have your music arranged, with good soloists and everyone starting and stopping at the same time. I (Thomas Arnesen) brought this band together in the spring of 2002 in order to play some material that was in some way modern, yet in blues form and with a genuine blues feel. Some of the songs are my own and some are traditional standards – old favorites and new ones. Some thoroughly arranged, others more loosely.I felt a need to develop an ambitious musical co-operation with a fixed constellation of good musicians within the area of blues music. The band is tight in every rhythm from shuffle to afro-cuban. We sometimes add an extra chord here and there. In the studio we play a little stricter than live, while on stage the band explodes.Blues, with its traditional 12 and 8 bar form, is to me a sort of musical essence that lies at the heart of human musical perception. It´s form challenges THE musician to find a personal, original way to develop while staying within its rigorous confines.

Eric Thomas - (bass on 7);
Arthneice ‘Gas Man’ Jones - harmonica;

Curt Pulliam - trumpet;
Eddie "Fast Eddie" Gillispie - drums.

If you long for "new" material in the old-school style, you should definitely make this a part of your collection. It's early Johhny Rawls, and L.C. Luckett, with a raw soul that will blow your socks (or other items of clothing) off. :) Luckett's and Rawls' voices blend just right on these cuts, and their solos make you close your eyes to listen (not a good thing if you're driving!) This is a must for any true soul lover. And check out Rawls' later cds. Soulful blues at its best.Johnny Rawls and L.C. Luckett are veterans of the chitlin’ circuit having formed the nucleus of deep soul singer O.V. Wright’s last band as well as backing Latimore, Lynn White, Willie Cobbs, Z.Z. Hill, and Little Johnny Taylor. This is their debut album as leaders, and it offers a hearty mix of deep southern soul and blues with a dash of gospel. Material is mostly originals by the pair although two tracks are associated with Wright, I Don’t Do Windows and a medley of I’d Rather Be Blind/ Crippled and Crazy coupled with Ace of Spades. While Wright’s influence can be heard in the pleading urgency of several performances, including the title track and What Makes a Good Man Go Bad, the mood on others, like the soulful ballad Can We Talk It Over, owes as much to Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and Sam and Dave.Their blues generally are not as distinctive lyrically or instrumentally as their hard soul tunes, but the impassioned singing and playing makes If You Not Home By Tomorrow a particularly arresting track. The dance number Shake It, Shake It Baby (“let me see you pop,”) is a lightweight funky dance number that suggests a slightly uptempo Get Out Of My Life Woman. Most of their songs though are solid performances, capturing a range of moods and settings - from deep soul to the slight swamp/pop flavor of Soul to Soul. Rawls and Luckett overdub on guitar, bass and keyboards with horns added to several tracks, and Arthneice ‘Gas Man’ Jones adds harp to Be Fair To People and If You’re Not Home Till Tomorrow. Certainly this album compares very favorably with most of the recent similar efforts from the Ichiban and Malaco labels, and it’s well worth more than a listen. This review originally appeared in the March 1995 Jazz & Blues Report (Issue 199).

Many vocalists of the early 1970s found themselves in the world of spiritual, roots-oriented, consciousness jazz: DeeDee Bridgewater, Jean Carn, Jeanne Lee, Sherry Scott, Andy Bey, and others. But none exemplified the creativity of the music like singer/percussionist Leon Thomas. The vocalist and co-author with Pharoah Sanders of "The Creator Has A Master Plan", Thomas married his understandings of jazz and blues with an exploration of different African vocal traditions. While Thomas had a lyrical side, his voice became an instrument unto itself. In the liner notes for one early Leon Thomas album it is reported, "Of Leon Thomas' singing on Pharoah Sanders' KARMA, Will Smith in Jazz & Pop Magazine observed: 'The voice projection of the lyrics is good and full, and leads to a wordless yodel sounding not unlike an American Indian call--the moaning of spirits known and unknown".

Furious Slugs are Russ Allen, Kevin Anderson, And Tom St Louis. These vintage rockers settled down to play the Blues, but after years of playing Pop Top Forties, Disco (Old School), Country, Rock, and whatever got the gig, it is really difficult to classify their sound.
Furious Slugs is a very ambiguous even oxymoron name. But, for the band it expresses a point of view. Just because we didn't make it in music as teenagers we're fighters not quitters. We're still throwing furious slugs musically.  Lead Vocalist and Bass Player Russ Allen's greatest influences have been Paul McCartney, Dusty Hill, Geddy Lee, Tommy Shannin, and Billy Idol.  Lead Guitarist and Vocalist Tom St. Louis' main influences have been Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Eric Johnson.  The Drummer, Kevin Anderson is a Charlie Watts fan and has styled his own drumming in the same rock solid manner.

Weldon “Juke Boy” Bonner (1932–1978) was born in the midst of the Great Depression. He experienced hard times throughout his life as he endured health problems, poverty, and the challenge of raising three children as a single parent. His experiences are reflected in the passion of his music and blues poetry. This collection includes songs not previously available on the Arhoolie label. In 2003, Chris Strachwitz issued this CD containing various unreleased sessions located between 1967 and 1974. However, these sides belatedly edited are not second choices at all. Indeed, "Ghetto poet" appears dense and varied, painting a good overview of the Juke Boy Bonner's underestimated work. There are several excellent titles issued in his characteristic style between Jimmy Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins : "Daylight won't catch me here", "Blues for Elmo", "Sportman's luck", "All the lonely days", "Rainin' in my room" and some curiosities like "Zodico jump" and "Childhood dreams".

The CD also includes some songs from the 60's. This revival allows him to make his first (and only) tour on European ground, appearing in particular at the Blues Estafette of Utrecht in 1990.

Dave Baker's  CD "Dead Men Don't Sweat", goes a step further and has a few more dynamic covers, but the compositions by Baker hit in the best rock 'n' blues traditions. Dave Baker has grown into a front-person with the ability to live his music and bring it strongly on-stage. "Dead Men Don't Sweat" is Baker's 2nd Brambus recording and released in May 1997. "Rock 'n' Blues...That's where I come from.... because it's a fair representation of my musical background and the kind of music that I love, enough to make me want to start playing, back in the early sixties. Some of these tunes I first played way back then and although the playing style and arrangements have evolved over the years, it's the basic material of the song that still gets me going when I sing and play them. Every number here holds special meaning and memories for me of bands that have come and gone, memorable gigs that I've seen or played, friends and musicians I've known and worked with, favorite records I've bought, treasure and listened to. It is also a more or less faithful reproduction of a Dave Baker & The Motivator live-gig as we have been doing all the material here live on stage since I formed the band and started playing gigs."
