This album can be summed up in one sentence: exemplary Chicago blues performed by the living classics of the genre. Back then, they were alive. Today, none of the five blues stars who recorded Loaded with the Blues are alive. MPS Records' online reissue evokes the golden age of blues, when a wave of blues-inspired rock music sparked a surge of interest in the music's birthplace and earned well-deserved recognition far beyond its narrow circle of fans. Willie Dixon, a bassist, singer, and composer, is the star of this album. Dixon's compositions have been performed by the Rolling Stones and Cream, Led Zeppelin and Jeff Beck, Dylan and Hendrix. But all of Dixon's collaborators on this recording, without exception, are legendary musicians. Drummer Clifton James worked extensively with Bo Diddley; guitarist Johnny Shines, Robert Johnson's best student and a Handy Award winner; Walter "Big" Horton, one of the greatest harpists in the history of blues; and, finally, pianist Sunnyland Slim, who achieved widespread fame during the time of this recording thanks to his collaboration with Canned Heat. Loaded with the Blues features compositions by all members of the all-star quintet. My personal favorites were James's slow blues "German Babies," which opens the album; Slim's "Everytime I Get to Drink," with its excellent guitar work by Shines; and another James song, the final track, aptly titled "Chicago Is Loaded with the Blues." I readily admit that others may have different favorites; there's plenty to choose from. I'd especially like to highlight the playing of the man Dixon called the best harpist he'd ever heard. Big Horton lives up to this compliment on virtually every track. Well, I don't see any need to talk about how good Willie Dixon himself is – listen to it yourself, and everything will become clear. The album is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates good old Chicago blues.
