Smooth, rolling blues grooves with strong lead guitar and a solid, rhythmic backbone. Some blues artists (including John Lee Hooker) back in the day would have the words "And His Guitar" written under their name on their records. I always liked that but wanted to try a more original approach. That's where "Jeff James and His Blues Unit" came from. Never was there a more fitting combination than guitars and the blues, therefore setting the basic foundation for this album.
As for the title "Engine Baby," I felt this (the first track) was the best choice because the collection of songs featured make for some great driving music. I've found myself eagerly looking for an excuse to take a short highway trip just to listen to this cd.The soulful, bluesy, rumbling of tunes like "Tugboat", "Crystaline", & "Engine Baby" echo infuences of guys like Robert Cray, Robin Trower, and Buddy Guy, while the more humorous lyrics of "Spitfire Woman" and "Twelve Inch Boot brings out the Albert Collins-type feel. Not to forget a great slam-bang anthem called "Something I Can Use", a couple of more traditional sounding numbers like "Mess Of Trouble" & "Till I'm Old & Gray" really set the mood, and last but not least the two instrumentals "Awesome Possum" and "Rio Samba" bring us around full circle for an enjoyable listening experience. So crank it up, turn on the a.c., and cruise!
