A small Sanford, FL-based label that Ichiban distributed in the 1990s, King Snake Records showed some promise in the blues-rock field with CDs by Smokehouse, the Backtrack Blues Band and Ernie Lancaster. One of the things that made King Snake's releases effective was their lack of pretense; many of them sounded like something you'd hear in an out-of-the-way (but very happening) dive on the outskirts of Kansas City or Tampa. Nothing fancy, but honest and real. Those words certainly describe I'm a Damn Good Time, an obscure blues-rock/roots-rock date by singer/guitarist/harmonica player Ace Moreland. Although a bit uneven, this is a generally tasty slice of Americana. Whether he's taking the 12-bar approach on "The Blues Gonna Get Me," "Down to the Bottom" and "Can't Get Enough" or providing earthy roots-rock on "Just Like a Surfer" and the Rolling Stones-influenced "Your Love Is a Lie," you know that Moreland is coming from the heart. A few of the tunes are forgettable, but overall, I'm a Damn Good Time paints an appealing picture of the underexposed Moreland.
