Four-time Grammy-nominated artist Tab Benoit, renowned for his distinctive guitar tone and Otis-Redding-esque voice, will release his highly anticipated album, I Hear Thunder, on August 30th via his own imprint, Whiskey Bayou Records. This is Tab’s triumphant return after his 13-year hiatus.
“Why, why-while somebody’s dying, there’s a newborn baby crying Why, why-lovers feel so lonely when they lose their one and only Why, why We can feel so helpless, turn around and be so selfish Why, why We have to hit rock bottom before we realize the problem.
Benoit’s last album, Medicine, released in 2014 and co-produced with Anders Osborne for Concord International, garnered three Blues Music Awards. Following this notable success, Benoit took a step away from music, taking a 13-year sabbatical from recording and entering a period of creative exile. This hiatus only deepened the anticipation and appreciation for his return, illustrating his lasting impact on the genre.
This journey began 1992 with a radio hit from his debut record, Nice and Warm. The notoriety achieved by his success has provided him with a mouthpiece to promote his growing concern for the Louisiana Wetlands and coastal erosion from the region hecalls home. Benoit seamlessly intertwines his creative, passionate approach to music with a profound commitment to environmental advocacy, ensuring his legacy extends beyond the stage.
As for the music on I Hear Thunder, Benoit explains, “I see my albums as previews to my performances. I Hear Thunder is the best show preview I’ve ever produced. “This is the first album that I had full say over,” he said, “it’s the first album that I don’t have anybody to answer to—except me and my audience. “
Benoit’s journey began in 1992 with a radio hit from his debut record "Nice and Warm". Since then, he has received multiple Blues Music Awards and four Grammy nominations. Beyond the music, Benoit is celebrated for his years of activism, particularly concerning the Louisiana Wetlands and coastal erosion. He seamlessly intertwines his artistic brilliance with a profound commitment to environmental advocacy, ensuring his legacy extends beyond the stage into the heart of the land that inspires his bluesy soul.

On Friday, August 30, 2024, Alligator Records will release Blame It On Eve, the sublime and powerful new album from award-winning blues, R&B and Americana vocalist Shemekia Copeland. Copeland possesses one of the most instantly recognizable and deeply soulful roots music voices of our time. Blame it On Eve will be available on CD, gold vinyl LP, and at all digital services.On Blame It On Eve, the 12 songs all hit hard, with jaw-dropping performances that instantly take hold and command repeated listening. “There’s serious business on the new album,” Copeland says, “but there are a lot of smiles here too, a lot of joyous moments. It’s my blues for sure but it’s the brighter side. Issues are always important to me, but so is rocking, dancing and just having fun. And that’s something we all can all agree on.” Blame It On Eve was recorded in Nashville and produced by instrumentalist/songwriter Will Kimbrough (who also produced her previous three albums). The songs tackle subjects as important as a woman’s right to choose and climate change, but also leave space for Copeland to have fun and unwind. From the autobiographical, rocking blues boogie Tough Mother (featuring Luther Dickinson), to the anthemic Blame It On Eve’s good-humored but serious focus on reproductive self-determination to the happy hour of Wine O’Clock, Copeland is inspired throughout.
Famed multi-instrumentalist Jerry Douglas adds his dobro to the fascinating, true story of Tee Tot Payne, the obscure early 20th century Alabama musician who taught Hank Williams the blues. Sacred steel player DaShawn Hickman brings his magic to the feisty and uplifting Tell The Devil. Shemekia’s friend, roots-rocker Alejandro Escovedo, joins in on the anguished, celestial query Is There Anybody Up There?. On the sad lover’s tale Belle Sorciere, Copeland sings the chorus in French, with the haunting melody composed by Pascal Danae of the Paris-based band Delgres (who were recently featured on the cover of Rolling Stone France). Copeland’s blistering, deep blues delivery of Down On Bended Knee—by her late father, the great bluesman Johnny Copeland—sets up the thought-provoking closer Heaven Help Us All, a song originally made famous first by Stevie Wonder and later by Ray Charles. Taken as a whole, the passionate, charismatic, joyous and at times confrontational Blame It On Eve is bound to become among the most celebrated releases of Copeland’s impressive, still-unfolding career.

11. Give Me Back My Money - 6:32
12. Don't You Want To Roll With Me - 4:11

Stony Plain Records announces an August 30 release date for ‘Roll With Me,’ the new album from two-time Grammy nominee and four-time Blues Music Award-winning guitarist Duke Robillard
“Back in the early 2000’s I was given the OK to start a new blues album for Stony Plain,” Duke Robillard explains about the new album’s genesis. “It was a very prolific period for me, and somehow after recording nine hot blues tracks, I got another album concept and we started another album session. I said we’d get back to the blues album soon after finishing the new project. As things sometimes go, we got busy with gigging, touring and life, and the blues album we cut kept getting put aside and we kept coming up with new album concepts within months of release of the last one.
“Finally, after two decades and dozens of recordings, we got to the place where it was time for my final Stony Plain record. All this time, I knew we had to get back to the album we had started back in 2005. I knew those tracks were really strong, but until I listened to them again, I didn’t realize just how strong they really were.”
On Roll With Me, Robillard pays blazing tribute to Texas immortal Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown on “You Got Money” and the instrumental “Boogie Uproar;” legendary blues shouter Big Joe Turner on a piano-driven “Boogie Woogie Country Girl” and New Orleans kingpin Fats Domino on the rumba-rocking “Are You Going My Way.” There’s also a trio of Chicago blues classics from the respective songbooks of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Eddie Boyd. Duke’s vocals connect with the same power as his razor-sharp guitar (Chris Cote takes over at the mic for “Look What You’ve Done” and “You Got Money”).
Duke invited some heavy hitters to back him up. Pianist Matt McCabe is on all but two tracks (those feature Bruce Bears), while bassist Marty Ballou and drummer Mark Teixeira keep the rhythm section cooking. Doug James and Rich Lataille are among the muscular saxophonists; Sugar Ray Norcia guests on harp for “Look What You’ve Done.” Duke cools the tempo down to lights-out level for an elegant “Give Me Back My Money,” but the title track sums the mood up: this album hurtles forward like a hard-charging midnight express.
Recorded at Duke’s Mood Room in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, by Thom Hiller and Lakewest Recording in West Greenwich, R.I. by John Paul Gauthier, Roll With Me is the latest in a long and distinguished series of albums the guitarist has made for Holger Petersen’s Canadian indie Stony Plain. Their working relationship harks back to 1993, when the two met at a folk festival in Winnipeg. Petersen was the executive producer on Robillard’s album, Duke’s Blues the next year. Duke developed into a Stony Plain mainstay with Stretchin’ Out Live (1998), Living with the Blues (2002), Exalted Lover (2003), Blue Mood—The Songs of T-Bone Walker (2004), Guitar Groove-A-Rama (2006), Duke Robillard’s World Full of Blues (2007) and The Acoustic Blues of Duke Robillard (2015).

 9. The Queen (Live) - 4:58
10. Shake Those Blues (Live) - 3:37
11. One More Day (Live) - 6:01

Musicians:
Chris Collins – Guitar, vocals;
Andrew Ogrodzinski – Lead guitar, vocals;
Chuck Luscombe – Harmonica, vocals;
Chris Carr – Bass, vocals;
Clif Metcalf – Organ & Piano;
George Ferguson – Drums, percussion.

The Thirsty Perch Blues Band’s unusual name provides them with an amusing logo depicting a fish vertical in a beer glass! “Live For Today” is the fourth CD release since 2009 from this Michigan-based band, a five piece with Chris Collins on guitar and vocals, Andy Ogrodzinski on lead and slide guitar, Chuck Luscombe on harp and vocals, Chris Carr on bass and vocals and George Ferguson on drums.  The band is supplemented by Paul Lesincki’s keys and Kathy Lamar’s backing vocals on on two tracks each; most of the material is original, written by Chris and the band and there are two covers. The CD opens strongly with the driving “Blues Walk” which lyrically turns out to be one of those tributes to shapely rear views!  Musically the guitar riff holds the tune but the harp playing is sensational as Chuck blows hard as he follows and overtakes the key changes, Andy following up with a fast-paced solo. “Bad Man” is another good tune as Chris explains that you need to avoid such characters “who have nothing for you”.  The band is supplemented by Paul’s organ and Kathy’s vocals to give a fuller sound as Chuck and Andy supply more solid solo playing.  “Roll With Me Baby” is fairly conventional lyrically, a relative of many blues songs along similar lines, though Andy’s lively slide work is a definite positive.
The first cover is “Say Goodbye”, taken from Dr Wu’s Texas Blues Project which rocks along well with its catchy refrain and clever lyrics.  Mind you, TPBB can produce some good lyrics too, as they do on “Conversation”.  Over a funk rhythm Chris states that “it ain’t no conversation when there’s only one person on the line…answering machine’s an option, or a voicemail left today…a man of very few words, my actions speak for me”.  Chris is seeking a resolution of this non-dialogue relationship but he hasn’t found it yet.  The title track “Live For Today” has some aggressive wah-wah playing and fast-paced rhythm work from Chris, the chorus having a definite hook with some solid harmonies from the band.  “Can’t Have You” was perhaps the track that appealed least to this reviewer with its heavy feel and histrionic harp playing. The second cover is Mike Zito’s “39 Days” which is well done in a straight cover of the original.  It’s a fine song which also has a heavy riff at its core but also light and shade courtesy of the chorus and second guitar set against the core riff.  “The Queen” is a catchy piece of rock with some great slide accents from Andy; perhaps it’s the title or the main riff, but Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” comes to mind.  In the middle section Andy and Chris get into one of those twin guitar pieces that always remind you of The Allman Brothers so this tune is a winner on several fronts!  A more conventional blues shuffle follows in “Shake Those Blues”, the chorus harmonies benefiting from Kathy’s second vocal contribution, joining the efforts of the band members. As the PR release sheet states, this album is ‘ten bad-ass new songs and a pretty one..’ and closer “One More Day” is just Chris on acoustic guitar and Andy on quiet slide embellishments, Chris wishing that he had one more day to spend with his lost friend.  It’s an emotional song and shows a different side to the band. This is a solid album with sufficient interesting material and performance to attract the interest of blues fans out there.

The Texas Red Legs - Rattlesnake Inn

 6. Gulf of Mexico Blues - 5:11
 7. Sugarface Blues - 6:29
 8. Burnin\' Down 35 - 4:29
 9. Neither Wolf Nor Man - 7:08

Americana band from Coppell, Texas fronted by Richard Davis."Long Way to Lubbock," the opening cut on this impressive debut, showcases the singing and songwriting acumen of Red Leg frontman Richard Davis. Dense and poignant, "Lubbock" is just one of the nine gems collected on Rattlesnake Inn, making it one of the surprise local releases of the year. Hell, even when Davis has the misguided chutzpah to title an original song "Tupelo Honey," he and his band have the ability to bring a new take to a classic theme. Very reminiscent of The Band (not at all a bad thing), Davis and his Texas Red Legs forge together their own sturdy take on Americana, combining the passion of prime Steve Earle with the mystery of '70s-era Dylan. Produced by drummer Tomy Le Dudley, Rattlesnake Inn is as accomplished a first effort as one is likely to stumble upon; the singing is appropriately ramshackle, and the instruments fade in and out almost on cue as Davis details various countrified concerns, such as getting somewhere in a hurry ("Burnin' Down 35") or looking for love in all the wrong places ("She Fell in Love at the Jukebox").As a songwriter, Davis' debut finds him on equal footing with both Rhett Miller and Brent Best. And from start to finish, Rattlesnake Inn delivers the alt-country goods with power, passion and (thankfully) absolutely no polish.

10. Weak-Minded Man - 5:29
11. A Fool Should Know - 5:51
12. Two Hearts - 5:32
13. Gimme Some - 5:58

The  release from the Terry Quiett Band, Taking Sides, is an eclectic mix of hard-hard hitting rockers, soulful ballads, and gorgeous minor gems, featuring Quiett’s impressive guitar chops punctuated by a crisp horn section, a rock-solid rhythm section, and some tasty blues harp.
The first half of the record sounds like vintage Terry Quiett: hard-hitting blues-rockers.  Quiett plays and sings with attitude, and the tracks are, for the most part, enjoyable.  That being said, the first half of the record is essentially what one would expect of Quiett; it does not surprise, amaze, or disappoint.  However, starting with a nice ballad in “A Fool Should Know,” the album turns over a new leaf.  The second half of the record is filled with spacey minor blues numbers, ballads, and is just dripping with soul.  However, this is still Terry Quiett, so the tracks are still full of energy, passion, and attitude.  Among the gems in this half of the record are “A Fool Should Know,” “Two Hearts,” “I Come Running,” and a well-executed cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” which are hands-down the best tracks on the record. This record is set up in an interesting way.  It juxtaposes the classic Terry Quiett sound against a different musical sound, both of which are enjoyable and good.

Sign of The Times is a long-awaited album from Jim Hayes Band in it's new incarnation. Rock with influence of Blues and sprinkles of Reggae.
There is a mission in music: kill conformity in the name of love and sanity. It’s all rooted in the raw heart of blues rock. Unrefined yet rich with melody, this band was formed in New Jersey, but it’s sound comes from the dark history of Mississippi – the birthplace of whiskey blues. This band is deeply devoted to keeping the original and sometimes radical spirit of blues and rock.

Tee Dee Young, a blues legend in his own time. He has definitely got the blues and he loves “firing down on that guitar”. While playing his own unique style of the Blues, his dynamic stage presence, exciting harmony and energy will put you in the mood for dancing! Tee Dee is a native of Lexington, Kentucky. He has been performing and playing for audiences for 54 years. He got his start playing the guitar sitting by the railroad tracks at the early age of 13. He was exposed to the life of Blues learning the basics mentored by an elderly gentleman, the late Mr. Harrison Coleman. He would pick up singing from his late father, gospel singer Leonard Young and he would later be influenced by his late brother George Young, who would constantly remind him to never change his style in which he plays the Blues.At the age of 14 he formed his own band and throughout the rest of his teens, Tee Dee would perform every chance he could get. Locations would include basements, private parties, talent shows, and entering through back club doors. By the time he was 20, he was performing in prestigious venues such as The Cotton Club, Albert King’s Club, Kington Mines, and Club Zero. Later on down the road he would make special appearances at B.B. King’s Club and even Issac Hayes’ Club.Tee Dee would later find himself opening up and even performing with legendary and acclaimed Blues and R&B musicians such as Johnny Rawls, Guitar Shorty, Big Bill Morgan, Albert King, Lil “Howling” Wolf, Sir “Mack” Rice, Eddie Floyd, Malina Moye, Al Green, Denise Lasailes, Aretha Franklin, Cameo, Lakeside, James Brown, Alexander O’Neal, Vesta Williams, Miki Howard, and many others. What makes Tee Dee unique is the style in which he plays the Blues. Tee Dee’s playing and singing are authentic to the genre but oblivious to current industry trends. His guitar is a weapon, wielded with total authority, assailing the listener with his sheer virtuosity!! He writes and perform his own music, while still being able to maintain his originality covering music written by other artist and his love for pleasing his audience, while he’s “firing down on that guitar!” (https://teedeeyoungblues.com/epk)

 9. Just Your Fool - 4:16
10. Too Tired - 4:07
11. Blues with a Feeling - 4:41
12. Mystery Train - 4:37

Chicago Blues Union is a brand  project of T. Rogers and Jenő Fekete. It was created for the love of the Chicago style electric blues. The new recording has a bunch of well known chicago blues tunes, played in an authentic way as much as possible. Of course it has some spice added from the characters of the recording artists. Both musicians feel passionate about fifties and sixties Chicago blues they pay homage along the twelve album covers that range from versions coming from Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Junior Parker or B.B. King among others. The band line-up also includes Szatai Zsolt on bass, Baráth Béla on drums and Stew Hay on harmonica. It is praiseworthy there are bands in Hungary like the one formed by these musicians who devote themselves to popularize and bring the most real and genuine Chicago blues to the general audience in their country. The musicians put all their strength and passion in the music they play, so this tribute becomes good example of what I am saying. They have clever and tasteful ideas both in the way they attack songs like “Born In Chicago”, “My Babe”, “Just Your Fool”, “Mystery Train”, “Last Night” or “Help Me”, as in all the groove they display in each of the songs.

10. Slender, Tender And Tall - 2:30
11. Wine - Texas BBQ - 3:07
12. Come On In My Kitchen - 4:24

This is the sophomore release for Shoe Suede Blues, whose members include one-time Monkee Peter Tork. It is nice to report that this album is a huge improvement from their live debut (Shoe Suede Blues Live in L.A....).Here, the songs are much shorter, tighter, and more creatively arranged, even if some of the arrangements just don't work (such is the case with their version of "Hound Dog"). ... The opening (and title) track, "Saved by the Blues," is outstanding, with Tork providing some heartfelt vocals backed by a hot, tight band. The album consists mainly of covers of classic blues songs, which tends to make the band sound like a bar band.

 7. Honey You Need An Oil Change - 5:17
 8. Love Sick Blues - 4:08
 9. Love & Money - 3:54
10. Harpooner Blues Mon - 3:33

A mixture of original compositions and original arrangements of covers. The band has a very broad list of musical influences and our members represent two musical generations. Consequently it is difficult to nail down our sound to a specific genre. While a song may lean heavily toward rock, there may be colors of jazz in the melody, while  country or blues makes an appearence in the rythm.
  The Patriarchs of the band are John Kepler on drums/percussion/vocals and Archie Hinton on electric/accoustic guitar/vocals. Both of these guys are veterans with Archie leading the way. Archie has toured nationally as a sideman and spent time as an L.A. session player and John has decades of experience in local and regional acts as well as sideman work with the USO.

Alex McKown - Go With The Flow

Bitrate:320K/s
Year:2013
Time:34:38
Size:80,1 MB
Label:Arnside Records
Styles:Blues/Rockin` Blues
Art:Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Out Of My Life - 2:56
 2. Superfly - 1:53
 3. Ruin What We're Doin' - 4:01
 4. Release Me (Feat Hamilton Loomis) - 3:48
 5. Go With The Flow - 4:19
 6. Life On The Line - 2:44
 7. Paint That Picture - 3:39
 8. Gone Too Long - 4:49
 9. Morning Light - 3:28
10. Finding Me - 2:56

The phenomenal thing about Alex McKown is the sound he’s able to produce at the young age of 17 years old.   That’s right, the meticulously crafted blues guitar work you’ll hear on Go With The Flow is the product of a 17-year-old’s obsession with his instrument.  McKown admits to playing alongside Eric Clapton and BB King’s records while growing up, and the legends’ influence can mostly be heard on McKown’s solo debut.  McKown’s guitar is supported by a Hammond and at times by various horn arrangements, making Go With The Flow a positive, up-beat record. Despite its basic foundation in classic blues, Go With The Flow feels like it’s pushing forward in a way that doesn’t always connect.  There’s a strong emphasis on funky, dirty low-end riffs and popping guitar.  Of course, this gives McKown ample room to show off his power on a six-string, and for a 17-year-old guitar prodigy it makes sense that this is the driving force behind Alex McKown’s construction of Go With The Flow. It’s also a shame that McKown chose to create the album’s slower moments with acoustic ballads rather than with slow twelve-bar jams.  This isn’t to call Go With The Flow’s acoustic tracks necessarily bad; “Paint That Picture” shifts between being a youthful, upbeat track to something a little more edgy at the chorus that brings the song to life just long enough for you to miss it when it’s gone, and “Finding Me” is an acoustic romp over a steady drumbeat that rubs shoulders with country music and features perhaps McKown’s best vocal performance. As far as a guitar record goes, Go With The Flow delivers what it promises, and that’s a young guy whose sound is developed far past his age.  It’s easy to see where Alex McKown is coming from – it’s where he’s going that’s still undecided.  A solid record with a little room for growth is really a promising sign for someone so young.

Home is the name of Philipp Fankhauser's album, which was released on October 10, 2014. The subject of home had already preoccupied him on his 1995 CD On Broadway. I'm leaving home but I'm going home, he sang at the time. It was the time when he had accepted Johnny Copeland's invitation to the USA and toured with him as a guest musician. Home - he thought at the time - must be where it all began, in other words in the hotspots of the blues scene. He would be going home, so to speak, by leaving home. The early death of his friend and mentor disrupted all his plans. The years were successful for Fankhauser's personal and musical development, but the economic situation forced him to make ends meet with all kinds of work that had nothing to do with the blues. You can also look at it this way: he was looking for the blues and the blues found him. At some point he accepted that he would always be a blues musician from Thun, however long he stayed in the birthplace of the blues, and he returned to Switzerland. At first he toyed with the idea of giving up his career, but fortunately he changed his mind. He had once again switched homes. Now things were looking up. Home is where your story begins, how true!

Noah Wotherspoon is an absolutely phenomenal and captivating musician, who found his calling at a young age, and made a name for himself as one of the leading musicians, and blues guitarists, to rein from Dayton, Ohio.
Mystic Mud is a beautifully crafted album with a southern feel that mirrors the title. The Cincinnati-based, Hound Dog Taylor-inspired Noah Wotherspoon is a 2015 Albert King Guitar Award winner. He’s a confident songwriter and a warm vocalist who draws the listener in.
A less-is-more approach allows his melodies and solos to breathe. Mystic Mud is rooted in Delta blues, sparked by Chicago blues and shaped into his own understated, contemporary style, as exemplified by the slide-led What’s Gonna Become Of Me. He duets with Jessi Bair on the Robin Trower-influenced Dead Man’s Shoes, adds a grungy, distorted tone on Two-Face Woman and explores Mississippi hill blues on Goin’ To Mississippi. Meant To Suffer is a swampy groove and Out Of Mind a Lennon pastiche, while Oahu Train Rag bookends an exhilarating musical journey.
Noah continues writing, performing, and recording in an array of projects such as: Noah Wotherspoon Band, Noah + the Rescue Radio, and with fellow musician, and girlfriend Jessi Bair. The NWB have released 2 albums, ‘Mystic Mud’ and ‘Mobile Juke House Theater' and have a new album and world tour in the works. The current NWB line-up features Da’Rosa Richardson on keyboards, Tom Rastikis on bass, Brian Aylor on drums and the Just Strange Brothers Horns from Cincinnati on select shows.

It is told that Roy Sites as a young teenage kid playing back in Columbus, Ohio opened for such greats as Bob Seager, James Brown and even Mark Farner while Mark was playing in "Terry Knight and the Pack". Allman is joined on the album by Jackson Stokes (guitar), George Porter Jr. (bass), Ivan Neville (keyboards), Adam Deitch (drums) and Karl Denson (saxophone).“Making the Miami Moon record with these legendary musicians has been a high point of my career. They brought these songs to life with their masterful playing and timeless feels,” said Allman.“As for the approach, a couple things were different this time: First, writing the songs on bass guitar was a first for me and allowed the grooves to be the main focus. Also, letting go of some previous, limiting thought processes allowed some of my other influences to enter the chat for the first time such as Curtis Mayfield, Sade, The Cure, Steely Dan…among others. I believe you can hear some flourishes of those true loves on this album,” says Devon.“Additionally, recording in the same hallowed halls where Dad made the Eat a Peach record and where Uncle Duane and Eric Clapton recorded the Layla record, made for a very special setting for us all to work in. We kept it fun and we kept it funky…..we ordered Cuban food, watched the NBA and jammed in a circle for days. In a world where you can make records in the basement or your bedroom, I’m so grateful to have done this record in a classic manner,” added Allman.
