Red’s Blues is a blues band from Sacramento, LA, who prove with their new album Old Diamonds & Uncut Gems that they are a band that you can have a great night with live. The album was recorded in the Starlet Room in Sacramento and is full of very pleasant, easy-going blues. Beth Grigsby (vocals), R.W. Grigsby (bass, vocals), Doug Crumpacker (guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Tim Wilbur (drums, percussion) are assisted on the album by Dave Earl (harmonica), Sid Morris (piano, organ), Robert Sidwell (guitar), Jon Lawton (guitar), John Cocuzzi (piano) and Marty Deradoorian (saxophone).
The album was mixed and mastered by Kid Andersen.
The album starts with the sultry, driving Broke Down In The Fast Lane in which the piercing guitar work of Doug Crumpacker and the experienced vocals of Beth Grigsby immediately stand out. After that, Singing A Brand New Song is a lazy, New Orleans-like swinger with the languid piano of Sid Morris. Looking For A Hustle sounds just as languid with a soulful groove and vocals by R.W. Grigsby. Drummer Tim Wilbur sings the loosely swinging Road Scholar and does so in a very lived-in manner. The groaning harmonica of Doug Crumpacker steals the show in the sultry pumping Putting My Foot Down. Black-Eyed Sally’s and Sherry Ann are both rockers in the best Blasters/Dave Edmunds tradition. The intro of Forty Years Of Trouble is strongly reminiscent of Wooly Bully by Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs and is adorned by the soulful saxophone of Marty Deradoorian. There are four covers on the album. The first is Mighty Long Time by Rice Miller. A harmonica duet by Dave Earl and Doug Crumpacker. The second cover, Stonebroke, is written by Gary Primich and is a lazy cover with roaring harmonica playing by Dave Earl. Mike Morgan’s Ain’t Worried No More is a raw blues number with Elmore James-like slide guitar playing. The cover of Floyd Dixon’s San Francisco Blues is a warm slow blues with razor-sharp guitar work by Robert Sidwell and Doug Crumpacker. The best number is the tribute to Memphis Minnie in the jazzy Lizzie’s Blues. This live album by Red’s Blues proves that Red’s Blues is a band that guarantees very entertaining blues live.
