David Eckford was born in Mississippi in 1940, but St. Louis was the city he called home from childhood after his mother moved there with her family from Mississippi. The family worked as sharecroppers on a plantation and wanted a better life. "One day, my mother begged the boss for $200 to buy the kids Christmas presents," Dee said. "Instead, she used the money to buy bus tickets to St. Louis, where she had relatives." Dee worked in clubs, including nightclubs in East St. Louis. Dee later played bass for Howlin' Wolf and Albert King, and worked with Jimmy Reed; he performed and recorded for record label owner Oliver Sain, who gave Dee a track. The collaboration, titled "Goin' Fishin'," transcended its local fame, selling not only nationally but also gaining acclaim from blues fans worldwide after receiving rave reviews from Bill Dhal in Living Blues Magazine. David Dee released six albums and a dozen singles (from 1968 to 1989) throughout his musical career.

The blues can also lift you ‘Way Up!’ Shakedown Tim brings down home blues and uptown boogie reminiscent of the 1940s and '50s. Top singer-guitar player in an outfit that rocks.
Anyone who's ever attended a blues or roots party will know Tim Ielegems, "Shakedown"—we saw him perform three times this year. Whether it was with his Rhythm Revue, as a guest at Steven Troch's birthday concert, or as Roland van Campenhout's right-hand man at Sortie Blues, it was always crystal clear that his natural habitat is the stage. He perfectly captures that joy of playing and that live feel on "Way Up!": from the very first notes, it feels like the band is actually playing in your living room. This album has all the ingredients for an energetic, steamy performance: a driven frontman (with the inseparable hat and fat body guitar), a balanced mix of original songs and covers (mostly from the early fifties), plenty of variety between slower and more up-tempo numbers, musical guests who regularly appear on stage to stoke the party mood, and last but not least: a tight, well-oiled band featuring Ilias Scotch on piano and organ, Kurt Lens on double bass, and Koen Van Peteghem on drums.
The sparkling "Feed My Body To The Fishes"—a cover of a seventy-year-old song by Delta Blues pianist Willie Love & His Three Aces—kicks things off, immediately followed by the much slower, (captivatingly) compelling blues of the self-penned "Messin' With The Blues." Not only does Ilias Scotch provide vocal support, but harmonica virtuoso Steven Troch also makes his debut appearance, stoking the fire even further.
Over twenty years ago, Troch and Ielegems took the blues world by storm with their band Fried Bourbon, and one of the many friends they made back then was Tiny Legs Tim (De Graeve), the late, late blues jam-sessions leader at Missy Sippy's in Ghent. He receives a fitting tribute on "Way Up!" with "Tiny Legs, Big Soul," a song about "what should have been" that's anything but sad, but rather a stirring, almost mantra-like song in which Shakedown Tim, his Rhythm Revue, Steven Troch, and singer Naomi Sijmons seem to dance a polonaise through the Ghent club "for old times' sake."
With the slow "My Love Is Real" and the swinging "Driftin'," we're back with two more covers. The first, thanks to Shakedown Tim's guitar work and Ilias Scotch's piano playing, surpasses James Reed's original, while the second revives an old Eddie Boyd and His Chessmen song with great enthusiasm and conviction. This fast tempo is maintained on their own composition, "Way Down," featuring not only Steven Troch as a guest but also, for the first time, Little Walter, Tim's dachshund.
In the duet "You're The Boss," written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Shakedown Tim and Naomi Sijmons convincingly embody the flirtatious couple from the lyrics, immediately raising the temperature. This version—featuring familiar face Bart Stone on sax—most closely resembles the original rendition by LaVern Baker & Jimmy Ricks and is in no way inferior to what Elvis Presley (with Ann-Margret), B.B. King (with Ruth Brown), or The Brian Setzer Orchestra (with Gwen Stefani) later created. The boogie-woogie blues of Real Crazy (an Amos Milburn cover), featuring a superb Ielegems on guitar, is also truly memorable. Frolic Time truly lifts our spirits, as Little Walter is called back onto the stage to dance a Charleston with his owner. It seems like a trivial matter, but the song is so naturally irresistible and well-crafted that it's impossible to shoo it back into its cage.
And then, it's as if a door suddenly blows open, and we're momentarily sucked into another dimension with A Sinner's Gospel...
There, we're welcomed by the spirit of blues harpist James Harman, producer of (and musician on) the previous Shakedown Tim And The Rhythm Revue album. This fragment of oppressive music (Ielegems on slide guitar and with a sepulchral voice, Harman with a devilish growl in the background) was recorded during a joint tour in 2018. They drew inspiration from a quote from mutual friend and former Blasters, Red Devils, and Canned Heat pianist Gene Taylor: "I hope God gives me what I need, and definitely not what I deserve!" Tim Ielegems dedicates the song to Harman and Taylor, who both passed away in 2021.
The final word goes to Close The Door, an instrumental with touches of jazz and blues, which further emphasizes the craftsmanship and clever interplay between the five musicians (Bart Stone also participates).

13. One Broken Heart for Sale (feat. Chris Foreman) - 3:45
14. How Much Can a Poor Man Take - 4:26
15. Evil Hearted Woman - 4:53

By any standard, Breezy Rodio’s blues odyssey has encompassed quite a few  more miles than that of most upandcoming musicians now riding the  competitive Chicago circuit. In 2007 Rodio joined the band of guitarist Linsey Alexander, known as “The Hoochie Man” to his many devoted fans. Breezy soon advanced to a bandleading role with Alexander’s outfit, the guitarist working on his 2010 CD If You Ain’t Got It as well as Linsey’s two acclaimed  Delmark albums, 2012’s Been There Done That and his most recent release in  2014, Come Back Baby. But Rodio found time to do his own thing too, cutting his 2011 debut album Playing My Game Too with a stellar supporting cast that included guest  guitarists Lurrie Bell, Rockin’ Johnny, and Dave Herrero and bassist Bob Stroger along with Alexander and  Guy King. In 2015 Breezy releases his second album, So Close to It. The album obtained very favorable reviews from all corners of the map. It reached the number two spot nationwide in the Chicago Blues category on the Roots Music Report, the number one independent music chart in the world. On So Close To It, Breezy reaffirms his crisp, clean mastery of electric blues  guitar, displaying a keen sense of tradition and proving himself a convincing  vocalist as well. He’s invited another cadre of Chicago’s top blues luminaries to join him, led by harpist extraordinaire Billy Branch, searing guitarist Bell, and  two-fisted pianist Ariyo. Hammond B3 master Chris Foreman is on board too,  along with jazz mainstays Art Davis and Bill Overton on trumpet and saxophone  respectively. He toured Japan three times, playing clubs and festivals, then embarked on several tours of South America, two tours of Europe, plus jaunts to Canada and Mexico.

13. I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water - 5:42
14. I'm On Your Side - 3:36
15. Going Down - 4:35

Blues Is My Business is Arizona-based singer, songwriter and bassist, Bluesman Mike’s fifth album. Featuring 15 songs with a nice mix of originals and covers, the album kicks off with the jazzy, swinging “Pack Up My Bags” before kicking into the grinding “Nothin’ Like You Used To Do.” It’s immediately apparent that the Blues Review Band is a tight little outfit, producing a jazz-influenced blues style that suits Bluesman Mike’s blues-soul voice perfectly. The funky “24/7” features a great guitar solo from Chris Sabbarese, while Willie Dixon’s “You Shook Me” opens with some haunting harmonica by John Dubec. Bluesman Mike’s own “Voodoo Man” mines a traditional blues lyrical theme as the protagonist boasts of his control over nature and people.  “I Feel The Blues Comin’ On” features a lovely strummed guitar introduction and some neat piano from Paul Darrow, while Magic Slim’s “Goin’ To Mississippi” sees the band get a little dirtier. “Hot” is an accurate title given Chris Sabbarese’s guitar solos in the tune, which also features some smart arrangements.Ann Peebles’ classic “I Can’t Stand The Rain” features the stunning voice of Jijjy Von and a glorious, almost gospel, a cappella finish. Johnny Guitar Watson’s “Real Mother For Ya” is given a suitably funky reading. Soloman Burke’s “Cry To Me” (here titled “Don’t You Feel Like Crying”) sees the arrangement stripped back with just TJ Henry on guitar, Kuban on bass and Bluesman Mike on vocals and is one of the highlights of the album for its raw simplicity.  Darrow’s piano lights up “I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water”, although his introduction to Freddie King’s “Going Down”, which closes the album, is a thing of wonder. The irresistible groove of “I’m On Your Side” suggests it’d be monumental in a live setting.The core band is Bluesman Mike on vocals, Chris Sabbarese on lead guitar, Darrow on keyboards, Tim Robinson on drums, and Bryan Kuban on bass. In addition, Shawn Behanna adds saxophone to two tracks and Henry and Von add guitar and vocals respectively to another two.  Tim Robinson and Brian Pfahey both take the drum stool for two tracks each. The album was recorded at Bryan Kuban’s studio (Kube Music) and Kuban has captured a series of fine performances.There is much to enjoy in Blues Is My Business. Warmly recommended (https://www.bluesblastmagazine.com/bluesman-mike-the-blues-review-band-blues-is-my-business/).

12. Made It Through the Mill, Again - 2:44

Their name is Al Holliday & The East Side Rhythm Band. They are a natural, genuine St. Louis Soul band – and that ain’t even half the story.
There is just one ride-or-die band family who does their thing the way they do – a band who can sound as hot and as thick as the breath of the Mississippi River in the St. Louis summertime, and can turn around and lay it down as cool as the breeze. Music lovers draw some comparisons to treasured groups like the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Delaney & Bonnie, and Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen – but AL HOLLIDAY & THE EAST SIDE RHYTHM BAND, with the muddy water in their veins – no doubt, come with their very own game. The young man and the band bring a package only describable as essentially American – a sound distinct to the “Big Muddy” and their river city home where the four winds blow.

Charles Tiner - Good Soul

10. Don't Be A Fool Too Long - 4:13
11. Don't Let The Devil Ride - 4:41
12. Put Your Money On Me - 3:21

Out of the gate, this collection is closer to contemporary blues than traditional blues. Closer to a souped-up B.B. King technique without the deep voice than a Muddy Waters. Chicago’s Charles Tiner (piano/organ/vocals/bgv/keyboards/horn & string arrangements/percussion) does have a soulful thrust. Though “Be A Man” is more production than groove. But track 2’s “Bad Woman” is perfectly rooted in a soulful B.B. King style, not imitated, just reimagined & polished. Tiner dresses the tune in blues finery along with a few ounces of Solomon Burke inflection. The arrangement has no concentrate – it’s filled with real juice & pulp.
So slowly this 12-cut showcase with sparkling lead guitar sprinkled throughout begins to take on the shape of Good Soul (Drops Jan 30/Independent/60:07). More of a ballad with soulful harmonica slices, “Don’t Bau Me Nun,” (translates: “don’t bother me none”) has a Keb ‘Mo country homegrown texture mixed with the deeper shards of Gene McDaniel (“Tower of Strength” “Hundred Pounds of Clay”) with Tiner’s excellent vocals. His pipes resonate with the flames in the hearth; the pinewood walls & the natural degree of a powerful delivery.
Many tracks are typical but have wonderful arrangements & backup vocals. Tiner never faults vocally. Confident, colorful, & authoritative. Despite the B.B. King/Solomon Burke/Gene McDaniels’ tonality, Tiner retains his own identity. The only danger Charles runs into is singing over dramatically. He has the range & good control, but some songs suffer from showboating. It isn’t often, but it’s obvious. Listeners will focus on what acrobatics are applied vocally instead of what Charles is singing. “Peace By the River” is powerful, but it’s Theodore Fisher’s brilliant sax solos that steal the spotlight. “Don’t Let the Devil Ride” now that cooks with fire.
Overall, the songs are tight, entertaining, & always well performed. It’s a pleasant mix of rootsy music, soul always, blues as a spice, balladry, funk & grooviness as an additive. Can anyone do it? Sure. But it must be like the old woman’s hearty soup. Never too much salt, just the right stock, flavoring & consistency. Tiner understands how his music requires sonics, propulsion, & taste in equal measures. Like soup. If he watches & controls the drama, he’ll be in the respective company of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke & Levi Stubbs. He’s got the mojo, the Mutzie & the gutsiness.
Musicians – John Virgin (lead guitar), Clipton Smith & Travis Aldridge (lead & rhythm guitars), Eddie Smith (acoustic, lead & rhythm guitars), Conrad Lee (lead, rhythm & bass guitars/RIP), Charles Fox (bass/upright bass), William Bryant (bass), Ezra Casey (piano), Jamahl Patterson, Mark Sanders, Keagan Cunningham & Mike Wallace (drums), Theodore Fisher (sax/ arrangement), Chris Camp (harmonica/washboard), Sandra Chappel, Regina Stewart-Byrd & Johnetta Jay Williams (bgv).

‘One Mississippi’ continues Eric Bibb’s late-career renaissance with the most musically adventurous and ambitious album of his long and storied career. The album contains thirteen original songs written by Bibb or co-written with his Grammy-nominated producer Glen Scott, plus a cover of “One Mississippi”, written by iconic singer-songwriter Janis Ian – whom Bibb has known since they were at high school together in New York in the ’60s – and Fred Koller
“This new collection of stories, from a not-too-distant American past and a tense global present, is a call for peace, justice & unity in a divided world,” says Bibb of the album. “As much as I love writing & recording new songs, I also enjoy discovering & covering great songs by other songwriters. The title song, “One Mississippi”, was written by my high school friend, Janis Ian with Fred Koller.” The album was recorded and mixed at Glen Scott’s own high-end studio in Uppsala, Sweden, and features a stellar cast of musicians including UK based guitar virtuoso Robbie McIntosh (Paul McCartney, John Mayer), whose expressive playing & skill adds depth, grit, and melodic commentary to Eric Bibb’s signature storytelling. One Mississippi also features Greger Andersson & Paul Jones (Harmonica), Shaneeka Simon & Sara Bergkvist Scott (Backing Vocals), Zosha Warpeha & Esbjörn Hazelius (Fiddle), Staffan Astner (Guitar), and Sven Lindvall (Tuba). “A thousand thanks to the fabulous singers, players and behind-the-scenes team members, for helping us tell the tale,” enthuses Bibb.‘One Mississippi’ follows an extraordinary period of prolific output and critical recognition for Eric Bibb. His 2023 album Ridin’ earned a 2024 Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album and was celebrated by critics as “a bluesy, folky delight… packed with melodic jams and steeped in oak casks for decades.” Prior to that, Bibb released ‘Dear America’ (2021), which was nominated for Blues Music Awards and recognized as “Album of the Year” by several leading roots publications. His most recent album, ‘In the Real World’ (2024), recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios and again produced by Glen Scott, met with similar acclaim, with Americana Highways praising Bibb’s “modern-day freshness” and “endless ingredients,” while Americana UK wrote: “a legendary figure of the blues, not content to rest on his reputation, but still exploring and growing.” As Bibb himself reflects, the album is “a vivid representation of my musical and personal evolution.” ‘One Mississippi’ breaks new ground for Eric Bibb, whose artistry has earned him three Grammy nominations and a place among the most respected voices in modern roots music. With a unique blend of classic blues, contemporary soul, and Americana, the album has crossover appeal to reach beyond his existing audience ~

The Beer Dawgs are a Northern California band based in Sacramento. They've been playing 5 nights a week for almost 19 years & are in the Sacramento Music Hall of Fame (Sammies). "A Little Luck" is their 9th CD, the first featuring the "Horn Dawgs" horn section.
The sixth song on A Little Luck, album number eight from one of Sacramento's hardest working bands, is titled "Tony Joe." Now any combo that pens and records a love letter to Tony Joe White, whose 1968 hit "Polk Salad Annie" is such a touchstone of Southern-fried skank rock, is alright. Chalk that strikeof white lightning up to Bawb Pearce, whose cigs 'n' Jack-tainted vocal cords slouch toward the Dr. John school of dissipation, possesses a musical vision that's retro and quite Southern, reminiscent of another California band with a keen understanding of Highway 99, Little Feat. And Pearce's partner in crime, guitarist Steve Wall, coaxes the kind of noises from his ax that made Little Feat's Lowell George such a threat. This set is a huge leap forward for the Dawgs, in production and in its attractive presentation. The Gator got your granny, indeed.

Good Australian upbeat soul and roots blues with jazz and folk elements, played in a modern style. It's great to hear how strong blues music is "down under". Give this album a listen, and try and locate Kate's "Soulshaker" album.
"Every great blues mama needs a great piano player and when you combine Kate Meehan’s sweet but gutsy vocals with Skip Landy’s sensual liberation of the piano it is nothing short of a delicious blend of lounge room blues. Kate and Skip will be showcasing new songs from their recently released collaboration with Peter Gelling, "My Sister's Shoes". Vocalist Kate and piano playing partner Skip have been playing their frivolous brand of "good rockin' rhythm and blues, boogies and ballads" around the festival circuit for over five years, leaving a trail of happiness in their wake". © 2007 Tourism Thredbo

MISSISSIPPI QUEEN & THE WET DOGS – PHOENIX
Mississippi Queen & the Wet Dogs present Phoenix, their second album, an LP of eight original tracks with which they continue to explore and develop their musical identity. This Bilbao-based funky rocksoul band, formed in 2015, has all the ingredients to win over audiences: a repertoire that encompasses many branches of Black music, an exceptional lead vocalist, and a powerful stage presence that thrills and captivates. Their live shows blend original songs with covers of classic and contemporary artists in an amalgamation of styles: soul, funk, blues, gospel, country… The group was founded by Inés Eleuteria, who combines powerful and soulful vocals with natural stage presence, and Aitor Zorriketa “The Malamute,” who displays tremendous expressive sensitivity and stylistic versatility on guitar. Completing this musical family are Ander Alonso on drums, Mikel Núñez on keyboards, and Jon Ander Amigo on bass. In January 2019, they released their first album, Try Me, which led to a tour of the best Black music festivals in the Basque Country and the Iberian Peninsula. They were selected by the AIE (Spanish Association of Performers) for the January-June 2020 AIEnruta Artistas program. That same year, they also won first prize in the SubeRock 2020 band competition and were winners of the Sonidos Mans 2020 competition, which allowed them to record the single ‘Welcome Home’ at Mans Studios in Galicia. This single was released in November 2020. Their live performances are a must-see for fans of versatile soul music; they'll make you dance and sing, they'll make you feel good, and they're sure to move you.

Michael Buckley: baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute;
Ronan Dooney: trumpet;
Paul Frost: trombone;
Dan Bodwell: bass;
Dominic Mullan: drums;

Linley Hamilton: trumpet (3);
Eamonn Murray: harmonica (8).

The island of Ireland has a long and impressive history of great blues singers—Van Morrison, Rory Gallagher, Phil Lynott all brought a raw, bluesy, intensity to their performances. Singer and guitarist Nigel Mooney has been on the Irish blues scene since the '80s and his jazz-inflected take on the genre is shown to enjoyable effect on The Bohemian Mooney. Mooney may not have the rough-edged aggression of Lynott but the blues is still very definitely at the heart of his style. Mooney's voice is lighter and more welcoming, inviting the listener to share his experience rather than to be wary of it: a characteristic he shares with James Hunter or Georgie Fame, who guests on "Down For Double" and "How Blue Can You Get." At the core of Mooney's band is his working trio of pianist Johnny Taylor, bassist Dan Bodwell and drummer Dominic Mullan. A selection of guest musicians help to enliven things, adding to the album's bluesy feel. As well as Fame there's the legendary Irish guitarist Louis Stewart, trumpeter Linley Hamilton and saxophonist Richie Buckley. Mooney's not shy of tackling the darker side of the blues. Robert Johnson's "Hellhound On My Trail" epitomizes that dark side and Mooney gives it his most despairing performance. The mood is heightened by the sudden wail of Eamonn Murray's ghostly harmonica solo. It's the exception to the overall mood of good-natured complaints about lost love and commercial failure, though. Mooney's "I Ain't Ready" and "Unlucky In Love" and Fame's "How Blue Can You Get?" all plough this furrow of regret and disappointment with a sly grin and a shrug of the shoulders—and swinging grooves that lend themselves to dancing the blues away. Mooney gives "April In Paris" a swinging, Count Basie, arrangement complete with Michael Buckley's rousing tenor sax solo.
The enigmatic "Dr Legin Yenoom" contributes occasional piano and tambourine. He's also, according to the credits, available for French lessons so he can perhaps take credit for Mooney's vocal on "C'est Si Bon." The Bohemian Mooney, like lots of good blues, has an ability to deal with life's tragedies and pitfalls while still making its audience feel good. Mooney sounds like he's lived the ups and downs, dealt with a few hard knocks, but still keeps on keeping on. After all, as he sings himself, how blue can you get?

Soul singer Bill Coday first came to fame with the hit single "Get Your Lies Straight" during the early spring of 1971. Signed to Crajon Productions, owned by the husband and wife team of Bill and Denise Jones (who recorded under the name Denise LaSalle and scored a 1971 gold single, "Trapped by a Thing Called Love"), Coday was the perfect vehicle for LaSalle's blues-oriented R&B songs.Born May 10, 1942, in Coldwater, MS, Coday began his singing career as a teenager, performing in juke joints around Blytheville, AK, with a band that included Son Seals. In 1961, he relocated to Chicago, IL, donning the name Chicago Willie. LaSalle spotted the singer while he was performing at the Black Orchid club. She teamed him with Memphis, TN, soul music producer Willie Mitchell whom she often worked with on her releases for Detroit, MI's Westbound label and for those of other Crajon artists (the Sequins' hits "Hey Romeo" and "The Third Degree"). (Mitchell went on to have hits with another Chicago singer, Syl Johnson, and gold and platinum-laced success with Al Green on Hi Records.)Coday's first Crajon singles, "Sixty Minute Teaser" and "I Get High on Your Love," were regional hits. The third single, "Get Your Lies Straight," proved to be the breakthrough, going to number 14 R&B on Billboard's charts in early 1971. On the flipside was "You're Gonna Want Me." As was the custom on a fast-selling national record, the independently-distributed Crajon leased Coday's single to the much larger Galaxy label, a subsidiary of Berkeley, CA's Fantasy Records, for wider distribution. The follow-up, issued on Galaxy, the Denise LaSalle song "When You Find a Fool, Bump His Head," made it to number 48 R&B in summer 1971. There were other Galaxy singles, but none charted nationally. Coday enjoyed a regional hit on Crajon with "I'm Back to Collect" in the first half of 1973. (Some of his Galaxy/Crajon releases can be found on the compilations All Night Long They Played the Blues (1992), Bad Bad Whiskey (1993) -- both from U.K. label Ace Records -- and an '80s collection of Coday's Crajon singles on Japanese label Vivid Sounds.)In 1973, he signed with Epic Records and the single "I Don't Want to Play This Game" was issued. In 1984, Coday began to tour with Denise LaSalle as her opening act. He began recording again after several years away from the studio. Signing with Memphis-based label Ecko Records, his first release was the appropriately titled Sneakin' Back album. The tracks "Her Love Is Good Enough to Put in Collard Greens," "I Can Move the Hoochie Coochie Man," "Doctor Thrill Good," and a remake of "Get Your Lies Straight" became favorites with blues lovers and blues-formatted radio stations. His second Ecko CD, Can't Get Enough, included "In the Room Next to the Room" and "Not a Word" with labelmate Barbara Carr. Coday's third Ecko CD, 1999's Put Me in the Mood, gave his fans more of his tasty blend of spicy, bluesy Southern soul ~ © Ed Hogan.
