"Lightning In A Clear Blue Sky" is the fourth album by Australian musician Don Walker, released in 2023. It debuted at number 2 on the Australian Independent charts.Don Walker had been the main songwriter and keyboardist with successful Australian rock band Cold Chisel. When they split in 1983, Walker had intended to retire from the music industry. In 1988, he released his first of two albums under the name Catfish. In 1995, he released the first album under his own name. As well as his occasional solo records, he recorded with a reformed Cold Chisel and as a member of Tex, Don and Charlie.Guitarist Glen Hannah, a member of Walker's backing band, the Suave Fucks, died in 2019. Other guitarist, Roy Payne, took on a larger role. Walker said, "We pretty much rebuilt our little band around Roy. So the album was all based around the way that Roy plays guitar."  Recording was mostly done over two sessions in early 2022. Walker said, "It was just me and the band in a little room somewhere, just glad to be out of Covid and getting to see each other. Hamish and Michael have been on board for about 15 years; Gareth Costigan, I have been working with for around 30 years or more; and Roy Payne for about 20 years."  Amanda Roff, Erica Dunn and Brigitte Hart from the band Harmony performed as backing singers. Walker said, "I had been a fan of the Melbourne band, Tom Lyngcoln's Harmony, and their setup is a three piece punk band with three angelic singers – The Harmonettes – so I contacted them about working on the title song and then I thought to use them on shorter and easier songs."Walker described them as unlike traditional soul backing singers, being more "European" and "cold". The eleven-minute title track was recorded in one take except for the trumpet section. Walker said months later he had a "typical middle-of-the-night idea: Wouldn't it be good to have mariachi trumpets on it? We tracked down Edgar Sanchez in Mexico City. He's not a jazz trumpeter moonlighting." Payne died in July 2022, after the recording of the album. Walker said, "He had an innocent cut in one leg, then he felt sick, went to hospital and he was gone in two days." Shannon Bourne filled Payne's role on the following tour. Walker said of Payne, "Clearly he was a very close friend, not only of the existing band, but he was a good friend of Shannon Bourne. He was an amazing man, one of the most remarkable people I ever spent time with".

Sears Crossing, from Elverum and Flisa, made their album debut in 2012 with “Almost Full Play” and have performed at numerous blues clubs and festivals across the country, but have never played in Svalbard until now. They feel most at home in clubs with a close-knit, intimate atmosphere, where the mood is relaxed and laid-back and everyone is at ease. It sounds just like Dark Season Blues!
They’re probably closer to rock than to the blues, and like to call themselves pub rockers in the tradition of Nine Below Zero and Dr. Feelgood. The band has drawn inspiration from the best that rock and blues have had to offer over the past few decades: Albert Collins in the ’60s, Fleetwood Mac and the Allman Brothers Band in the ’70s, and Rockpile and the Fabulous Thunderbirds in the early ’80s. In 2015, they released “Get Searsed,” a raw and energetic blues-rock album featuring original songs and a powerful drive. The band consists of Arnfinn Tørrisen (guitar), whom many will recognize from bands such as The Contenders, Roy Lønhøiden, and JT Lauritsen & The Buckshot Hunters, among others; vocalist and guitarist Andreas Holø (Powerful Stuff), Rune Mykleby on drums (Noise Pollution / Powerful Stuff), and Roar Espen Wagenius on bass (Roy Lønhøiden / Greasy Gravy).

Doc "MistaBluesman" Quinn is a blues musician whose style blends blues, rock, and country—a fusion he calls "RokCounBlus!" He began playing the guitar around the age of six, heavily influenced by his father, Buddy Quinn, who gave him his first instrument. He now owns a collection of 21 guitars and performs at various venues, describing his sound as laid-back—"like sitting on the porch with your grandfather while he plays the blues." His album *Me & Mr. Quinn* was released in 2012.Younger generations claim that seeing "MistaBluesman" play his acoustic guitar is like hanging with your Grandpa on a back porch on a steamy, lazy Summer evening with your Grandpa playing his guitar while casually mesmerizing you with rich playing and soulfully baritone vocals. MistaBluesman's Prophetic Blues started it's life in 1955 when his Father handed MistaBluesman his first guitar. MistaBluesman's Father (Buddy Quinn), Mother (Lois Quinn), Sisters (Donna, Della, Dorothy) and Freddie Thomas are all credited in the teaching of basic guitar and love for the Blues Guitar to MistaBluesman. From that day to this very day MistaBluesman states that every lick on his guitars is sounded for the pleasure of music lovers/listeners worldwide. MistaBluesman is living proof that in many aspects of life, age is indeed relative and music is timeless.
If my Blues eased your sadness and heartache then as a true Bluesman, I have done my job! - Doc ;-)>

Passion – a word that takes many meanings and forms. Passion is the catchword that describes Doña Oxford’s first album of all new material in nearly four years. From her first album “Rowena Said…” and particularly her live followup, “Raw,” Doña Oxford has always projected a dynamic and exuberant personality and serious chops. With this long awaited collection, “Step Up,” Doña digs deeper than she ever has before, showcasing her powerful voice and the R&B and Gospel roots that she only previously hinted at. Starting with “Together,” a mid-tempo romp with echoes of Carol King, Doña states that this album is way different than her previous efforts. Confident vocals, polished production, strong writing and performances are the hallmark of  “Step Up,” as well as a political bent that is meant to persuade as opposed to harangue. This is best exercised in the title track, which owes a debt to the Staples Singers. Further into the album, “For The Children,” shows Doña ruminating on child abuse and its consequences. On the lighter side are tracks like “Here We Go Again,” and “Sweet Memories,” and the outright rocker, “Don’t Go.” Doña has always had a way with a torch song and “Step Up” has its share; “Between The Sheets” and “He’s My Baby,” showcase a woman done wrong, but ultimately strong.
Produced by Carla Olson (The Textones, Gene Clark) and featuring some of LA’s best musicians, “Step Up” is indeed a giant step up for Doña Oxford, who continues to grow as an artist and bring something passionately new and different to her audience.

If you could pick one modern example of that earthy, downhome, story-telling, chitlin' circuit Soul/Blues  Mr. Dicky Williams would fill the spot quite nicely. One thing's for sure he's one of the most underrated Soul/Bluesmen of our era. Like one-time fellow labelmate Chick Willis (Ichiban Records) Williams became known for bawdy songs like "Come Back P***y" & "I Want You For Breakfast" but he's actually a strong Soul singer/songwriter in the Otis Redding vein even without the x-rated shtick. Williams claims to have written "over 200 lbs" worth of songs- most of which have yet to be released!
Dicky's recording career dates back to the novelty 45 "Tee Na Na" in 1960 followed by scattered singles for Metro ("That's Where True Love Began"), Backfire ("Ride The Wind"), Pledge ("Heartache Hill") & Ace Records ("You Got A Good Thing Going On") before his first LP dropped in 1978 on Backfire Records, the highly sought after collector's item "Triple Dyn-o-mite". After a single or two more, including "Touching You" for Sirco in 1984, his second album, "Red Negligee', White Whiskey & Blue Lights" was released in 1986.
His greatest success to date came after signing with Atlanta's Ichiban Records. In 1989 he released "In Your Face", which produced the aforementioned "Come Back P***y" and his stone classic "In The Same Motel" (which also appeared on his "Red Negligee" record). He followed it up with 2 more records for ichiban before releasing two obscure records on his own in 1996 & 2003. In 2007 he recorded a new Blues/Rock album with guitarist Ken Massey, featuring the semi-popular song "Dog Kinda Love". In 2011 he teamed with Jerry Teel of Unity Deep promotions for a Country Gospel album.

 7. Riley's Lament - 4:10
 8. Dogbone Boogie - 4:34
 9. See Whacha Dun - 6:19
10. Trukk's Song - 3:24

Here's an interesting one... Dogskin Suit finds its home in the Kelowna, BC, region of Canada, and while not a straight-ahead blues band, they keep traditions alive while moving forward. Led by Rick "Poppa Dawg" Halisheff on guitar and vocals, he's ably followed by Charlie Faulkner and Brian Maquire, holding rhythm section duties, Sig Schnellert on sax and keyboards, and Jamie Marshall's harmonica on occasion. Logging in at three-quarters of an hour, the 10 song disc is a well-produced effort with lots of positive attributes. Halisheff's voice is strong, with a whiskey-soaked edge, and as a songwriter, he tackles interesting subjects with a humorous, tongue-in-cheek style, while his guitar work is focused and to-the-point. Standouts are the rustling "Too Fast To Love," which features some talk-box guitar effects, "Riley's Lament," an instrumental dedicated to B.B. King, and the smoldering, in-your-face slow blues of "You Don't Cry Anymore," where Halisheff seems to take on a Tom Waits persona. The driving "Struggle And Strive" boils along a chugging, lowdown groove with everyone locking in, while boasting a fine tenor sax solo. Closing out with "Trukk's Song," dedicated to Halisheff's father, the sweet slide tones and syrup-drenched harp bring you back to earth with ease. Discs like this don't come along often enough, so it's truly appreciated when they do.

*Brunswick Pickin' Station* is a full-length studio album by the rock band The Zilches, released in late October 2026. Hailing from Brunswick County (Shallotte, North Carolina, USA), the band plays a blend of blues-rock and psychedelic rock, drawing heavy influence from the music of the 1960s and 1970s (in the vein of The Allman Brothers Band). The album consists of 10 tracks that reflect the band’s "past, present, and future." Work on the material was a long process—according to the musicians, some of the songs on this release had been around for about seven years before they finally saw the light of day.

 7. The Cuckoo -  5:17
 8. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - 12:44
 9. I Walk On Guilded Splinters - 11:47

The album “A-Live & Smokin’” perfectly captures the raw, magnetic essence of Bag Of Nails—a Greek trio that has revitalized the European psych-blues and soul-rock scene. This record serves as a sonic testament to the electrifying energy the band unleashes on stage, eschewing studio artifice in favor of a direct, fiery, and profoundly honest sound—though perhaps a bit too modern for my personal taste. From the very first chords, the album immerses the listener in an atmosphere thick with smoke, sweat, and analog distortion, evoking the mystique of legendary clubs from the 1960s and 70s. Panos Katsikogiannis’s guitar leads the journey with razor-sharp riffs and solos brimming with visceral expression, while the rhythm section weaves a solid, hypnotic foundation that invites a trance-like state.
A standout moment is the opening track—a commanding cover of “Spoonful”—in which the group showcases their formidable improvisational prowess and deep fidelity to the roots of classic blues. The fluid transitions between melancholic calm and psychedelic outbursts reflect the maturity of a band at the peak of its powers. Ultimately, “A-Live & Smokin’” is more than just a collection of live tracks; it is an incredible listening experience that pays a wild tribute to the freedom of pure rock.

Forty years is plenty of time to watch life play out like a rerun. The faces may change, and the world around us may shift, but, damn it, the same miseries keep rolling in, wave after wave. It’s the fire of love fading into the biting chill of an ordinary autumn day; it’s that perennial struggle of running out of money before the month is through; it’s all talk and no action; and it’s a set of arbitrary rules that always seem to favor someone else. Perhaps that is why the blues has never truly vanished from the collective soul. The suffering never ends. On their anniversary album, *Cut The Crap*, Ramblin’ Minds look both backward and squarely at the present day. Hailing from the Luleå/Piteå region, the band delivers a Norrbotten-flavored take on Chicago blues—recorded at the Dalbacka studio outside Piteå by Viktor Fagerlund Grunditz. Twangy guitars, boogie-woogie piano, Hammond organ, and harmonica trade places, all carried by a groove that has had four decades to settle in and find its stride. On "Love’s Still Bold," we follow the journey from restless youth to a life that has finally taken root. "Algorithm’n’Blues" brings the classic frustrations of the blues into the "attention economy," where likes, views, and algorithms have become yet another system one must struggle to keep up with. Meanwhile, the stomping "The Rooster" paints a portrait of a man who loves to strut around, making a lot of noise and cultivating a self-image far grander than the actual mark he leaves behind. The title track, "Cut the Crap," has a different kind of bounce—a confident, 1950s-style swing built around playful, unison riffs on guitar, piano, and harmonica, while the lyrics take aim at those who talk big but have little to back it up. It is sharp, dry, and distinct—in both the music and the lyrics. Ramblin’ Minds ranks among the longest-running blues bands in Norrbotten; over the years, they have produced several acclaimed records and television projects, including collaborations with Ronny Eriksson. With *Cut The Crap*, they celebrate 40 years as a band—with no intention of calling it quits. They simply continue to use the blues for what it has always been good at: capturing life’s aches and irritations, and giving them a bit of bite and a good swing. The release of *Cut The Crap* coincides with the band’s anniversary concerts in Piteå on October 30th and 31st.

 9. The Speed Of Reality - 3:45
10. Play What You Feel (Pt.2) - 3:30

Making this album has been a journey, one that’s tested me, stretched me, and ultimately reminded me why I do this in the first place. The Beauty of It All is a collection of songs born from the highs, lows, and in-betweens of a life lived wide open. These tracks are pages torn from my own story-full of grit, gratitude, humor, heartbreak, and hope.
Drew Foust makes music that feels like it’s been lived in.
A natural soul singer, self-taught multi-instrumentalist, and prolific songwriter, Drew makes music that exists somewhere between a juke joint’s last call and the first light of Sunday morning. It’s gritty, spiritual, and deeply human. Southern soul with a modern heartbeat.
Long before the stage lights, Drew’s story was shaped by instability, movement, and resilience. Amid the shifting chaos of his childhood, he found refuge in music around age eleven, discovering artists like Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Al Green, and Buddy Guy in his father’s CD collection before finally picking up the guitar himself around the age of fifteen. His grandmother, a celebrated Southern gospel songwriter, further sparked his interest in storytelling and its accessibility through song. Untethered from religion, he still carries a spirituality that runs through his music. At nineteen, fatherhood rewrote his life. The rush of failure, responsibility, and hard-earned growth became the foundation of his voice as an artist. That growth also gave way to a deeper appreciation for songwriting and roots music, and the discovery of artists like John Prine, Taj Mahal, Allen Toussaint, and Ry Cooder, among others. Today, Drew balances family life with the demands of a working-class reality and an uncompromising artistic vision. That tension is the engine of his sound. Backed by The Wheelhouse, Drew delivers a brand of “Southern Soul N’ Roll” built on deep grooves, raw feeling, and unfiltered authenticity. Together since 2019, they’ve played hundreds of shows at venues, clubs, and events all across North Carolina and the East Coast, including stops in Nashville, New York City, Atlanta, and New Orleans. Notably, Drew & The Wheelhouse have performed at nationally acclaimed music festivals, including FloydFest, Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival, and the North Carolina Folk Fest. They have also been official opening acts for The Wallflowers, Anders Osborne, The Rumble, and Cedric Burnside. Drew has also collaborated in the studio and onstage with friends like Charlie Hunter, Sam Fribush, DaShawn Hickman, Maia Kamil, Jive Mother Mary, and Jay Faires. His 2022 album Good Thing, released on Charlie Hunter’s SideHustle label, drew heavily from the golden era of Memphis soul. His latest record, The Beauty of It All, is his most personal work yet - ten songs pulled from a life lived wide open, full of grit, humor, heartbreak, and hope.

 8. Just Your Fool - 3:12
 9. If You Tell Me - 3:22

Diamond Joe Siddons is a fine rockish blues guitarist with a limited but effective voice. A professional musician since 1971 who is based in Texas, Siddons mostly writes his own material and is a no-nonsense bluesman. He utilizes a conventional two-guitar organ quintet with occasional contributions for a three-piece horn section throughout his spirited set. Most unusual among the lyrics are "I Threw the Dice," which has to do with taking a chance on love, while his cover of "Just Your Fool" is properly intense and powerful. Diamond Joe Siddons is virtually the entire show and he is heard throughout in prime form. Wasted Dayze and Twisted Nights..., despite its brevity overall, is easily recommended to fans of modern blues.~ Scott Yanow/

Slim & The Deuces was a traditional blues band (with quite a few originals) formed in early 2008 by Dave Harris (lead vocals, guitar, amplified harmonica and fiddle, John Hunter (drums, backing vocals) and Greg Kennedy (bass, backing vocals). John and Greg had a lot of earlier history in the blues and backed greats including Albert Collins, Pinetop Perkins, John Nicholas and James Cotton among others. Dave fronted the band and they played the Blues Bash, Nanaimo Blues Fest and other local and up-island gigs. The band recorded a good live CD («Live from the Blues Underground») at the Nanaimo. When Greg left after a few years George Fenn came in on bass. Gary Preston also joined for a period on vocals, keyboard and harp (yes, 2 harps, it was cool!). Not long before the band folded Jordie Edmonds came in on guitar. John and George went on to back Jason Buie, Bill Johnson and others. Dave continued with his one man band. Greg Kennedy sadly passed on. All done by 2017.

For Lane Baldwin, Deeper Blues was the culmination of almost thirty years of playing, studying, and living, the Blues. Lane spent decades learning from – and often performing with – Blues greats, such as Johnny B. Gayden (Albert Collins, Alligator Records, et al), Pinetop Perkins, The Nighthawks, Paul Bushbacher (L’il Ed & the Imperials), Tom Principato, Jimmy Thackery, Johnny Copeland, Mason Ruffner, and many others. In 2008, having amassed an extensive catalog of songs, Lane stepped out front to lead what many called “the best Blues in decades.”
Originally released in 2008, Dig the Hole was re-released on Raven Records at the end of 2014 with new cover graphics. All tracks are from the original masters.
Lane recently revived his Deeper Blues trio as a side-project, with which he performs locally when not on tour (http://lanebaldwin.com/dig-the-hole/).
