Dutch singer (Assen, June 10, 1941 - Rolde, September 26, 2011) who became famous as singer and founder of Cuby & The Blizzards. Although unknown to the English-speaking market, Cuby & the Blizzards have been one of Holland's top blues bands since the mid-'60s. Some of their early singles had a beat/punk orientation, particularly "Stumble & Fall" and "Your Body Not Your Soul," both of which would be reissued on various Dutch beat compilations a few decades later. They quickly settled into a straighter blues groove, however. Their claims to fame in the larger rock/pop world are that they briefly backed Van Morrison in the gap between his departure from Them and the beginning of his solo career, although details of the association remain murky; also, at one point lead guitarist Eelco Gelling was asked to join John Mayall's Bluebreakers, although he declined.

Kenny Wayne - Borned With The Blues & Raised On Rock 'n' Roll

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 1980

Label: Amazing Records
Styles: Electric Blues/ Roots/ Country/Rockabilly

 9. Baby Come On Home - 2:33
10. Tell It Like It Is - 2:55
11. Texarkana Baby - 2:07
12. Mathilda - 2:56

In 1980 this was an authentic surprise for all the American-Rock fans. A mixture of mixed blues, country, rockabilly and rock & roll roots, Wayne had a peculiar vocal and personal style. An album played with verve and passion, heavy with blues, rhythm & blues and rockabilly.   Featuring: Bugs Henderson and band, Smokin' Joe Kubek, Jim Colegrove, the Juke Jumpers, Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, Steve Doerr and Don Leady, aka Le Roi Brothers.

Don't get confused--the artist featured here is neither blues-rocker Kenny Wayne Shepherd nor L.A. blues singer/pianist Kenny Wayne. Rather, he's a bluesman of a different stripe, a singer with a wild, unhinged vocal style who brings country and rockabilly roots to his sound. This 1980 recording finds him backed by '80s blues flamekeepers like Joe Kubek and Anson Funderburgh, and tackling classic blues tunes with a fierce, larger-than-life approach, sounding like he might devour the band whole before the session ends.

All songs are excellent, but my favorite on this one is "Welcome to The Human Race", a song written by Pete. These guys are all great though, so enjoy!!! "

He worked with Little Joe Blue, John Lee Hooker, Lowell Fulson, Etta James and Big Mama Thornton.Thompson commented on his preferred style, "blues is like a medicine, or religion to me, it'll cleanse your soul". Meanwhile, Mick Fleetwood stated, "Ron Thompson is my favorite guitarist". Resister Twister, the second album from Ron Thompson, is an enjoyable soul-blues collection that finds the slide guitarist at the peak of his form. There's not much original on the record, but Thompson plays very, very well, and the result is a fun contemporary blues recording.

 9. I Want You To Love Me - 4:23
10. Go On - 3:58
11. Long Road - 4:05

Steve Hill’s Solo Recordings Volume 2 is tantalizing. With seductive, smokey guitars and mesmerizing vocals, Hill’s music ensnares the senses with powerful arrangements and instrumentation. After 20 years of making music from his home base in Canada, Hill has globalized his captivating take on the genre of blues rock. Hill’s music has depth, and is heavy with the weight of musical density that is showcased on his 8th studio album.Displaying his expert level ability when it comes to writing music, Hill has taken the time to cleverly craft each arrangement for the tracks of this album. Whether its the gritty, western vibe on “Tough Luck,” or the powerful rock swing on “The Collector,” to the country-blues groove of “Hate To See You Go,” Hill has managed to produce an album with surprises of ingenious musicianship and songwriting. This album has perfectly depicted Hill’s ability to bring power to performance. Solo Recordings Volume 2 is a continuation of Hill’s masterclass talents when it comes to creating awesome blues-based rock n roll. Completely self-produced, Hill shows off his level of music capabilities by recording himself playing each and every instrument heard throughout the entire album. The word “one man band” has been redefined by Hill with the music on all of his albums, but especially through Solo Recordings Volume 2. This album is special. Not only because the techniques are special to blues rock music, but special in the same way delicatessens offer a “special of the day” sandwich; it is completely refreshing, and the best choice for getting an abundance of good music in one album package.

Scott Holt - Angels In Exile

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2001
Time: 54:47
Size: 144,7 MB
Label: Eagle Records
Styles: Blues/Blues Rock
Art: Full

Tracks Listing:
 1. Baby Let's Go - 3:22

 3. Angels In Exile - 4:40

 7. Up In Flames - 5:09
 8. Spanish Moon - 5:46

10. Blind Willie McTell - 7:17
11. Who You're Thinking Of - 3:57
12. Strong Enough For Goodbye - 5:09

Longtime Buddy Guy sideman Scott Holt certainly doesn't suffer from a lack of talent. He's got the voice, the chops, and the look to be the next "great white hope" of the blues world. What Holt lacks is direction. This album is full of bristling guitar work and strong vocal stylings. What's missing is a sense of identity. Holt rips through a selection of house-rockers and choice cover songs without ever letting the listener know what exactly should separate Holt from the packs of wannabes in his wake. Most of the songs are penned by Scott with a few notable exceptions, including a cover of Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell." There maybe is the problem. That particular song has been done to death in recent years. Holt's first album was more adventurous. The standout song on that collection was probably the Clash's "Train in Vain." That sort of musical adventurousness promised strong things from this performer. This album, alas, doesn't deliver on that promise. All is not lost, however. Holt's voice is strong, and listeners will probably find themselves humming the title track some hours later. Hopefully, his next record will put his talents to better use.

Seattle, Washington, USA - Sensational guitarist Lawrence Batty is an explosive fusion of groove, psychedelia, blues power, funk and jazz improvisation. Mr. Batty's sparkling guitar and emotional vocals are paired with the thundering drums of Dominic Tallarity and the wavy bass lines of Jeff Brumley. Influenced by blues legends BB King and Albert King and driven by the fervor of Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin, Lawrence and his band "cook" an intense, laid-back rhythm. Their live performances will take you on an impromptu roller coaster ride that will make you want more! Many fans and critics put Lawrence and his band on a par with Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream and Stevie Ray Vaughan! ... Spicy Groove! "- Bob Rivers, KZOK Radio 102.5 FM, Seattle.

Slim Butler hails from the unfamiliar hot bed of Finland´s blues scene, Rovaniemi. Slim was born in summer of 1963 as Jarmo Puhakka in this small Arctic Circle town. Ever since picking up his first guitar (cheap mail-order Lucky Seven) at the tender age of 12, he´s been fronting local bands, always leaning towards blues, soul and rock. Never one to limit his musical focus, he is also an enthusiastic lover of funk, reggae and jazz – listeners can still hear echoes of some of his early influences such as Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, The Beatles, Howlin´ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Ry Cooder and The Allman Brothers. After honing his skills for decades, Slim has gradually evolved into a mighty fine guitarist, band leader, avid songwriter and recording artist with musical maturity and a vision to reckon with. Now at the forefront of the Finnish blues movement, he is not showing any signs of slowing down. Over the years Slim has shared the stage with Jimmy Johnson, Otis Grand, Bob Brozman, Dr. Feelgood, Papa George, just to new but a few. Slim is a lifelong advocate of the finest rhythm and blues, funk, soul and americana. Alongside his many musical activities, he is one helluva proud producer of the Roots´n River Blues festival in Rovaniemi. The event was founded in 1995 and is still kickin´ strong. Blues and soul legends such as Honeyboy Edwards, Homesick James, Johnny Adams, Jimmy Johnson, Carey Bell, Roscoe Gordon and Tower of Power are among the household names that have visited the cozy annual gathering in Lapland.

 9. Crosstown Traffic - 3:38
10. It Hurts to Love Somebody - 4:22
11. You Gotta Serve Somebody - 5:16

Give Scott Holt credit for trying to breathe life into the modern electric blues with his second album, Dark of the Night. He is clearly indebted to tradition -- he spent over a decade as a sideman for Buddy Guy, and he performs not only with his band but with Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble and the Jimi Hendrix Experience as backing bands -- but he never mimics his predecessors, even if he's covering "Crosstown Traffic." His guitar is lively and vibrant, projecting more of synthesis of various styles rather than duplication. Holt also chooses some unusual songs, opening the album with Prince's "Five Women" and the Clash's "Train in Vain (Stand By Me)." All of these departures from the norm are quite welcome, as is Holt's strong musicianship, but the record is occasionally bogged down by his strained, bluesy vocalizing, which unfortunately comes to the forefront on such interesting choices as "Train in Vain." Even with this weakness, however, the record has a considerable amount of life and style -- enough to make it a satisfying step forward from Holt.(https://www.allmusic.com/album/dark-of-the-night-mw0000245427)

After the more than splendid free ranging skill and artistry that was undoubtedly displayed on Texas Slim's previous stunning live album entitled "Cookin' With Gas" ( Feelin' Good Records 015). He, some five days later went into the studio to record this album for your delight and delectation. An album that will yet again dazzle, impress and amaze all who hear this hard hitting no-nonsense deadly, earthy, blasting Texan guitarslinger. To maintain the intensity of feeling and to hold onto that grooving, cruising vibe, the whole album was recorded in three days; twelve of the numbers were set down in two days on the fifthteenth and sixteenth of March two thousand and eleven at the Vox studios, Italy; the remaining three numbers were recorded on the tenth of May two thousand and eleven at Audio, Dallas, Texas. The musicians joining T.S. on the Italian sessions were as on the live album that being; the rock solid powerhouse combination of Martin Iotti; bass, Lele Zamperini; drums and Max Lugli lovingly blasting away on the harmonica. For the American sessions we have two long time collaborators of Texas Slim Bill Cornish; bass and Kenny Stern; drums, together they give a helping hand to provide the seamless backing that is found throughout the whole album. In conversation with Norman Darwen Texas Slim explained that he believes, 'European audiences listen more carefully to the music to appreciate it and respect it as work of art' he further stated that 'You feel like a big star when people cheer for you at the concerts - it makes you play better.' He also went on to clearly and succinctly define what he believes to be is the essence of the blues and what it means; 'The music is simple so it can be enjoyed without any analysis. The blues is what comes from your heart. While your mind winds down to relax from everyday worries. Blues is from the heart and for the heart! It can be sad, happy, angry or humorous.' These very beliefs are amply demonstrated by the hypnotically played music on this album.

During that time they have put out three releases on BlueSong Records, each clearly identifying a more distinctive voice and sound. Their third release, Relentless Blues, marked the introduction of The Shafran-Klegseth Band (SKB), although the band continues to perform as The RedHot Blues upon demand as well. From their first gig, January 1, 1992, the band made a name from intense shows and great material. The word spread and landed the band gigs with artists like The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Buckwheat Zydeco, Guitar Shorty, Steve Morse, and Les Dudek. The band became staples on the western blues circuit, playing premiere blues venues like The House of Blues, B.B. King's Blues Club, The Zephyr Club, The Coach House and The Blue Note, and became popular on the festival circuit including The Omaha Blues Festival, San Diego Street Scene, and headlining performances at the Las Vegas Blues Festival. 1998 found the band in Japan on tour as well. The band is comprised of Shafran on vocals and Klegseth on guitar, and these partners are well suited to each other. There is a tangible intensity in the performance style of both Shafran and Klegseth. Each man is able to say volumes with their own particular instrument. Shafran's vocals were packed with so much emotion, it sounded like his chords were going to shatter at any moment. Klegseth's guitar work was not only technically outstanding, but he really connected emotionally with the audience through his guitar. -- Music Connection Review of House of Bluesshow

13. Whiskey River (Live) - 4:22

This is a very good Blues and Rock n' Roll disc. I like most of the songs. I THINK I LOVE YOU TOO MUCH is my favorite. The lead guitarist is excellent. Give a listen to his playing on BREAKING UP SOMEBODY'S HOME. (Boy this song sure gets around!) The singer is very good. I wish the bass was lower: It's maybe twice as loud as all the other stuff. You can't go wrong with this band; they know their stuff. It's ironic that The RedHot Blues have waited eleven years to put out a live disc. Formed in late 1991 by Junior Lee Klegseth, the band's guitar player, the entire vision of the band was a tribute to the live energy of bands Klegseth had grown up watching in bars (sneaking in from age 15) in the Midwest. Making the wait more curious is the fact that Klegseth despises sterile studio environments. For whatever reason, the band never got it done. The absence of a live album shouldn't lead you to think the band hasn't honored that early vision. This band has thrilled live audiences from one to two thousand, in corners of pool halls to mountain top festivals, and loved every minute of it. Klegseth and vocalist Dave Shafran have been together from the first show on New Year's Day, 1992. These guys—with various backlines—have paid all the dues a band can be asked to pay and never complained for a moment of it. Listening to the live release you will be struck with the sheer diversity this band handles well—believe it or not, they push the boundaries even further in their shows (after all, how many bands legitimately pull off Hendrix’s "Voodoo Chile" to Merle Haggard’s "I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink"?). Shafran and Klegseth are old school, working hard and treating the stage as a place of honor. These guys have a reputation for starting early and playing late. Yes, some bands still do it that way. Take a deep breath before you put in The RedHot Blues "live."

David Daniels - Drums

BJ Allen and Blue Voodoo are two-time participants in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN, and their previous release "The Storm" was a semi-finalist in the Best Self-Produced CD competition at IBC, 2006. With the release of their third CD, "Hot Wire (My Heart)" in 2007, this quartet of blues rockers continue to establish their own blues signature. Both "The Storm" and "Hot Wire (My Heart)" feature nearly entirely original music with just one cover song on each disc. BJ is a lady that sings the blues - sweet, sultry, sassin', sexy - from the powerful "Gypsy Woman" and the title track "Hot Wire My Heart" to the sad strains of "Blue As Blues Can Get" or the wrenching "Deep Valley" - BJ delivers a vocal punch that will stir the soul. Jerry Fuller handles guitar and keyboard tracks and is one of the writers in the band. Equally adept with either instrument, Jerry provides the musical punch to this group. JP Hurd plays the bass and adds harp tracks, as well as writing some of the original music. JP applies the funk to the soul of this blues band. David Daniels keeps the groove on the drums and handles the engineering for the recording projects. David and JP lay down a strong foundation over which Jerry and BJ work their magic. Covering a wide range of blues styles, BJ Allen and Blue Voodoo put on a great show with their own brand of contemporary blues that has earned them air play on broadcast, internet, and satellite radio stations world-wide.

The Twisters, one of Canada's best blues groups, have gone through both turnover and tragedy since their previous recording. Their drummer Randy Smith dropped out of the band due to tendonitis and their bassist, James Taylor, was killed in a car accident. Eventually deciding to continue on, the group debuts a new bassist on After the Storm in addition to welcoming guest pianist/organist Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne. The heartfelt vocals of Brandon Isaak and Dave "Hurricane" Hoerl along with their solos on guitar and harmonica give The Twisters their own musical personality. Their material is consistently bluesy while not always being confined to the 12-bar blues. The group is particularly effective on blues ballads/

There is no shortage of electric blues-rock in the 21st century, but most of it doesn't have the strongly psychedelic outlook that Portland, OR's Woodbrain bring to Swimming in Turpentine. This early 2009 recording gets a lot of inspiration from the psychedelic blues-rock of the late '60s and early '70s -- psychedelic as in Jimi Hendrix, psychedelic as in Cream, Ten Years After, Canned Heat, and the Yardbirds, psychedelic as in early Led Zeppelin. Swimming in Turpentine has no problem transporting listeners back to that era, and it does so with absorbing results. But that isn't to say that this group's influences begin and end with Vietnam War-era blues-rock. Actually, one of the things that makes Swimming in Turpentine so appealing is the fact that Woodbrain are obviously well aware of the bluesmen who inspired those British and American psychedelic rockers back in the day. The blues didn't start with Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, or Jeff Beck -- Clapton, Page, and Beck would be the first to tell you that -- and Woodbrain acknowledge many of the great bluesmen who did so much to pave the way for the psychedelic blues-rock explosion of the late '60s and early '70s. Electric Chicago blues (as in Chess Records, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, and Buddy Guy) is a strong influence on this album, and so is acoustic pre-World War II Mississippi Delta country blues (as in Robert Johnson, Son House, Bukka White, and Charley Patton). In fact, one of the highlights of this 60-minute CD is a memorable arrangement of White's "Shake 'Em on Down," although most of the other tracks are Woodbrain originals. And the influence of John Lee Hooker is an attractive part of the equation as well. The excellent Swimming in Turpentine leaves no doubt that Woodbrain's roots run deep.

Musicians:
Tim "The Perkolator" Perks - Guitar, Vocals
Derek "Harmonica Slim" Matteson - Harmonica, Vocals
Dave Young - Bass
Sean McIntyre - Drums

This is the debut release from a band based in Pennsylvania. Formed five years ago, the band is axed round experienced guitarist Tim ‘The Perkolator’ Perks and young harmonica player Derek ‘Harmonica Slim’ Matteson, supported by Dave Young on bass and Sean McIntyre on drums; piano is added to three tracks by Adam Darer and B3 to one track by Eric Christian. The CD was produced by another harp player Mikey Junior who contributes some backing vocals alongside recording engineer Peter Richon, Tim, Derek and Dave. Tim and Derek share the lead vocals, Tim on eight songs, Derek on six, with one instrumental. Tim wrote seven songs, Derek three and there are five covers: Willie Dixon, Louis Myers, Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Little Walter– an impressive list indeed! The album was mastered by Dave Gross at his Fat Rabbit Studios in New Jersey.Tim’s biography reveals that he grew up in England but relocated to the USA years ago. He has played with many local acts and references a host of guitarists in a long list of influences – the Three Kings, T-Bone Walker and Chuck Berry amongst them. Derek only started playing harmonica in his early twenties but after seeing Mikey Junior and Steve Guyger he became obsessed with the instrument. The band’s gig list is extensive and, as well as playing a lot in their local area, they also tour and will be representing the Central Delaware Blues Society at the 2020 International Blues Challenge. Both front men sing well, Derek having the slightly deeper voice and from the off this is a great release of traditional blues with no overplaying on harp or guitar. The originals are all solid, not a clunker amongst them: check out Derek’s swinging “South Street Shuffle” or his wailing harp on “Here I Am Again”, Tim’s dark and brooding tune which also has a fine guitar solo with hints of latin contained within it. The album opens with the driving “Trying So Hard”, followed by “Going To See My Baby”, a co-write between Derek and producer Mikey, an infectious tune with great rhythm work from Tim and a strong vocal and scintillating harp from Derek. The band shows it can swing on two shorter tunes, both penned by Tim: “Can’t Keep A Good Man Down” swings like crazy and you can guess what “Jump With You Baby” is going to be from the title, the tune sounding a little like an old Sam Myers/Anson Funderburgh tune. “Sitting And Thinking” has more of a boogie sound over which Derek weaves some great patterns while “Leaving You” bounces along cheerfully, in contrast to the lyrics! Every proper blues band needs to show that it can handle a slow blues and here “Next To You” fits the bill perfectly while Derek’s closing “I’d Like To Thank You All” gives a shout out to the band’s long-term fans and supporters as Derek fires off salvoes of great harp underpinned by frantic piano. The covers are well chosen to both represent the band’s influences and to offer listeners some tunes they will recognise whilst also avoiding some of the most frequently covered selections. Willie Dixon is represented by “Pretty Thing”, the rhythm section doing a good job with the Bo Diddley riff; “Keep On Loving Me Baby” is the choice from the Otis Rush songbook and Tim achieves a wonderfully light tone here on a fast-paced take; the churning rhythm of Magic Sam’s “Every Night And Every Day” is a great vehicle for some relaxed guitar and impressive harp work; every harp player owes a debt to Little Walter and Derek leads on harp and vocals on “Up The Line” which is the longest track on the album at just under five minutes, allowing Tim to include an excellent, fast-picking solo; Louis Myers’ instrumental “Top Of The Harp” is a feature for Derek.
This is a really enjoyable disc which could well be a contender for debut release of the year. It will certainly appeal to lovers of traditional blues and comes recommended from this reviewer.(https://www.bluesblastmagazine.com/slim-the-perkolators-album-review/)

PRAISE FOR HANDSOME JACK :

These central New Jersey natives have really come together. With two guitars, bass and drums augmented by keyboards and sax, the sound is full and crisp. Check out "Sugar Sweet", "Mr. Boogs", "Alligator Stew" and "Heat Of the Night". A.L. has been turning it out for over 20 years and Dave Sweet on bass toured with Little Mike & the Tornadoes. These vets have it finely tuned, while the sound stays nice and plump. Everyone at this end enjoys this CD immensely.

JACOB WILD is a One Man Band "man orchestra". Retired for a few years "into the wild" in the south of France, it is in a cabin perched in a tree that he finds the inspiration to write and play what he calls the Wild Blues. He sings, plays harmonica and guitar on 2 guitar amps and 1 bass amp, full drums on the feet (bass drum, lightbox, tom, hi-hat and cymbal). He released from his lair a second album entitled "TIME TO CHANGE" in the fall of 2021. an album with a concept story that links the 11 tracks of this album telling his exile towards nature. The legacy of some recognized blues masters is at the heart of My World Is So Cold by Kent Burnside. Kent was taught the guitar by and is the grandson of the late R.L. Burnside. On this album, Kent shows off some of the musical talent that seems to be part of his family heritage. His uncles are also established blues players in their own right. This is an interesting mash up of that Mississippi country blues style with some more modern rock influences. Kent starts out the album with a track that has him sounding a bit more as if he is from Chicago with vocals that are reminiscent of Buddy Guy with the driving rock beat of “Country Boy.” Things slow down from there quickly with the brooding sounds of the title track slow blues “My World Is So Cold.” On “Spoonful” we get a little bit of ’60s psychedelic sound thrown into the mix. This is not Cream’s version though. It is a lot more down and dirty sounding then that. This cover stays closer to the feel of the Howling Wolf classic. We get a little more of the country sound with the holler of “I’m Cryin” over some really heavily echoed rhythm guitar. The sparse acoustic arrangement of “I Miss You” is a fitting tribute to his late grandfather.“I Heard” is a song you can easily picture being played at some juke joint during the early days of the electric blues and that it would easily be followed with an acoustic set consisting of “Honey Doo.” At the beginning we mentioned that this is the legacy of blues masters – plural. Holding down the rhythm section on the drums is David Gray Kimbrough Jr., who also is the grandson of the late blues legend Junior Kimbrough. Things wrap up with “Walking Blues,” which is not the Robert Johnson song of the same name. This funky little track grooves along. You have to ask yourself, is Kent Burnside really worthy of attention and not simply because of a connection to another famous musician? The answer here is definitely yes. Kent has a unique sound that brings together that Mississippi influence of his heritage with a bit of modern sound for something that is uniquely his own.

A Mexican Blues Band?, well..YES, we do listen to Blues as well, and this is a very good example!. Not even "Avenida del Blues", neither "Cecilia Toussaint", or "Troleblues" has so many years in the music business as Real de Catorce, they are certainly a key representative of Mexican Blues. This CD reflects all what a good Blues Band can get, good guitar solos, sync bass lines, great performance on the drums, sax, Harmonica, all emebedded with lyrics about personal expressions, mysticism, lost love or psycodelical trips...hey!, the band is from the Mexican Federal state of San Luis Potosi and took his name from the magical town of Real de Catorce (exactly where the Peyote grows in the desert)..so, what can you expect?. They have more than 20 years of existence and they were one the most respected bands in the country...sadly they were never high record sellers or from the mainstream. A good and listenable CD to enjoy alone and with a good Bourbon, sometime depressive tunes, but touching the balance of what a good Blues CD can be.

Blues guitarist, songwriter and performer/Mark Hill AKA Fatt Max was born and raised in London. His musical exploits in the UK spanned over 20 years and included stints with such notable ensembles such as Three Go Fishing With Norman, Tinker Dan's Jangly Trifle and The Barney Blues Band.Perhaps his most revered career highlight was as a founder member of the Shrinking Violets who later went on to be the most famous overweight and underpaid band ever to play at the world famous Grastonberry Music and Pie festival in Orpington, Kent. In 1998, the authorities finally caught up with FM after years of dodging community diet classes, Faced with either 20 years hard salad eating or deportation to Australia, FM took the Aussie option.Unfortunatley, upon arrival at Sydney Airport, the autorities realised that a mmistake had been made on the shipping papers, and FM was sent to New Zealand with a promise that the Australian Government would send for him once thay had found his from A2354 (they are still looking as far as we know) So, FM settled in NZ and went to work immediatley releasing his dozen selling album 'Takin' The Piss' in 1999. Musical wilderness followed for over 10 years until, after far too many pies and bottles of cold piss, the song 'Tale of the Two Stroke Cowboy' exploded onto the charts. The song was adopted by the NZ biker community (of which FM is an active and podgy member) various other musical mediocrities were forced on an unsuspecting world. In 2010 Fatt Max released his album 'Blooze Yeah' and since then has never looked back.....because his undies are too tight...that can happen you know...Fatt Max plays the blues. No point frilling it up, the blues is the blues and life is too short not to have it.If you want to know anymore then join the mailing list...but dont ask for diet tips...:-))))))

10. Ain't No Big Thing - 3:43
11. Barfly Boogie - 3:46

If you are looking for some new rocking blues with lots of guitar and a strong driving beat, then check out "Living In Sin" the debut album from The Barfly's.The Barfly's are a rockin' three piece based in Antwerp, Belgium. Tom Van de Reydt leads from the front playing a mean guitar and delivering some fine vocals, Peter Janssens on bass provides a thumping groove, that really keeps moving, and Eric de Schutter does an admirable job beating the skins. The band's influences are obviously wide, from Quo to Zeppelin, with a measure of Texas and West Coast thrown in for good measure. All eleven tracks on this comparatively short 40 minute album are original recordings all written by the band, or their associate Howlin' Bill. The themes of the songs follow the usual blues mix of being in and out of love, sex, and beer (well they probably drank lots while making the album judging by the acknowledgements on the CD insert) It was good that the guys keep the tracks short, they blast out a song and when they have said everything the song ends without any self-indulgent prevarication. The highlights include "Boogie Man", which has a good bluesy feel, "Dealin' Love" featuring some fine guitar work, "In My Dreams" with a good bass riff, and the nice harp on "Barfly Boogie". The Barfly's have a good live following in Belgium, and this album should give them some deserved exposure in the rest of Europe and North America. So turn up the volume and boogie with the Barfly's. 12. Your Last Chance - 3:58
13. Burnt By The Flame Of Love - 3:22

The debut album by Alabama-born soul singer Ellis Hooks is a breath of fresh air on the blues and R&B scenes. For starters, Hooks' songs and sound are entirely unaffected by modern notions of sterility and restraint, or even worse, revivalism. These 13 songs burn with the same fire that the great Southern soul and R&B tracks did from the days of yore -- without sounding like them. With producer Jon Tiven -- who, along with wife Sally, also co-writes with Hooks -- the singer has crafted an entirely upstart outing, one that touches upon Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding, but feels like one of the gritty New York streets Hooks has busked upon. The brokenness and hope that lie in the rough grain of Hooks' voice in "Everything's Falling Around Me" feel as much like a prayer as a wish for transcendence, supported by the biting chunkiness of Sally Tiven's popping bass strut and Jon Tiven's knotty six-string fills. Hooks goes into the groove and lets it cover him; he's singing to the heavens, but also to anyone else who is in earshot and can provide help. At the heart of the shimmering sweet soul in "Blaze Up the Town" is a tale of acceptance and reportorial regret. With a small chorus of backing vocals and wah-wah guitars trussing up the center of the mix, Hooks is free to indulge his confusion and frustration -- he seeks freedom, but doesn't want to hurt anyone in the process. In his voice is the sound of the truth as it falls subjectively out of the heart of the singer. But one also has to wonder if there has ever been a more searing, honest love song than "Your Love Is Too Strong." Here is a testament to the Beloved that Doc Pomus wishes from beyond that he had written. The instrumental arrangements here just bubble under the raw power in Hooks' singing. Tiven is a fine guitarist but, more than this, as a producer he understands that immediacy is the only way to provide the proper intimacy for a vocalist of Hooks' commitment and magnitude. There is some fine bluesy material here as well, in cuts such as the title cut, "I Been There," "Your Last Chance," and the closing "Burnt By the Flame of Love," which comes out of the rambling, shambling Elmore James tradition. All it proves is that Hooks can do it all, and that this is a first volley in a career that, if developed properly, will not only affect the music that is soul and R&B, but may also just remind listeners why it meant so much in the first place. Undeniable is a rock-solid, edifying first effort.
